Having done just a bit more field-testing (okay, our apartment isn't really a field, but anyway), allow me to boost my enthusiasm for the "Shazam" iPhone app. Very cool technology. Picture this if you can, Howie; you hear a piece of music in a restaurant or store that you like, but can't identify. You hold your iPhone up near a speaker; about 10 seconds later, your iPhone identifies the song. In my non-scientific non-field (but yes, apartment-) testing, it gets it right about 75% percent of the time. And it's free.

Science!

Why the urge to claim that U.S. defense and intelligence agencies did not know anything about Iran's false missile launch claims?

Far more to be gained by keeping quiet.

The exact timing of the launch, the destination and impact sites were all tracked.

Having lgf be the source of the exposure further undermines Iranian prestige. Not an intelligence agency, not even the mainstream media but a lizard tipping LGF. That has to smart and cause some discomfort in Iran,

"In one ear and out the other" is from Chaucher? Holy cow.

Language can be fun. Just today I was reading book 10 of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey & Maturin series, and it occurred to me that the phrase "cross the line" is almost certainly nautical in origin, referring to crossing the equator.

Think also of how no less a person than Saddam Hussein has contributed to the English language. "The Mother of All (fill in the blank)" is now part of modern speech.

I don't have that system, so I can't say how well it works. The amazing thing about that is that it's "listening" to THE SONG ITSELF, and figuring it out. There must be some very heavy-duty algorithms cooking away back at Shazam HQ to be able to do that.

I am glad LGF threw Biblically literal creationists under the guise of ID and neo-fascists under the bus. This stuff is crap. Islamofascism is the biggest threat we face today, but neither the rejection of reason and science nor the acceptance of David Duke will help the West resist this threat. In fact, the acceptance of reason and the rejection of David Duke will allow us to resist this threat. The threat of Islamism is one part its assault on reason and the other its inherent totalitarian attempt to turn the world into a monoculture of sharia.

Faith is wonderful, until you reject faith tempered by moderation and reasonable limits, which then establishes the dilemma: if you accept everything based on faith without any grounding in reality, what's to stop someone else from claiming their crazy faith is just as good or better?

Diversity is wonderful, until you favor an external group that seeks to destroy diversity. Political correctness and multiculturalism, by not distinguishing at all between different ideas and cultures, sets the stage for a takeover of the most aggressive even in democratic societies, a la one person, one vote, one time.

The trick is to remain faithful to values without being dogmatic and to accept reason and distinguish between things that are better and those that are worse.

Between the hard right (political or religious) and the hard left (just political or favoring any religion but Christianity or Judaism), the job is tough. Only moderation and the classic middle ground - or what we might now call slightly right-of-center, since so-called progressives are about as reasonable as IDers in this day and age - can protect Western culture from itself and the external forces that want to destroy it.

I don't get why the Koran calls Jews pigs and monkeys. I mean, pigs and monkeys are very different, so which is it? Obviously, this is not evolutionary thinking. It's revolutionary (guard) thinking. Also, why the obsession with the uncleanliness of dogs? That's a weird one. Dogs have been companions of humans for thousands of years. Some of the oldest dog breeds at Middle Eastern. The wolf was probably made a companion of humans around the campfire in Mesopotamia. Maybe it was convenient to blame the poor ever-present dog on disease epidemics. That's similar to blaming cats for evil in medieval Europe. Or maybe being attached to a dog was viewed as outdated idolatry by early Muslims. Or maybe they just hate everything that might distract men from prostrating toward Mecca, getting a forehead burn and going to war: like dogs, infidels, women, music, alcohol, etc. It's time for an "Islam for Idiots" book to explain these things in plain and simple language.

A bit OT, on the culinary side -

Any tips on clam chowder recipes? My priorities are simple prep, serves two (multiple times, I like going back for 2nds and thirds on good hearty dishes), is "hearty", won't disappoint either a Texan who's seen the ocean twice in her life or a New Englander who scoffs at the fru-fru interpretations of good solid Yankee chow.

The three best recipes I've found all involve frying up dead pig in a pan, adding onions/spices/flour to the fat, then using clam juice to cook up the clams, throwing it all together, and adding some kind of dairy.

Wondering if anybody here had some advice on this ("my mom always does X", for example), as I know we have plenty of Yankees, of both the in situ and New England Diaspora varieties. Several people here gave me restaurant advice before a trip to New Orleans last year and they were spot-on, I figured this thread is as good a place as any to ask.

Hrmm there's a lack of consensus on varieties : brown vs. grizzled vs kodiak etc. some consider them one species, others multiple species. They can all interbreed. Ursus Arctos is the brown family, and interestingly enough they can also mate with Polar bears, so we no longer have to worry about global warming.

That said, it's time for me to get some sleeps.

It's because dogs are f-cking dirty. They don't bathe, they eat their own crap, they crap everywhere, they drool or get food everywhere, and they shed at least as bad as cats.

They're damned handy for a society that travels in packs, lives in caves, and has to deal with roving predators of both two- and four-legged variety. For modern suburban living, though, I find the cat to be much better suited. Unfortunately cats don't guard things.

Mohammed was probably at least as germophobic and OCD about clean, non-smelly hands as I am. He was clearly a "cat person", which is the only point I agree with him on.

I don't dislike dogs, and I see why people do like them, but on the whole, objectively, they are disgusting, high-maintenance animals. I wouldn't dare to own one unless I had plenty of property for it to run on and a surefire way to keep it in a designated area of the house.

I'm acquainted with a guy who's been over to Afghanistan multiple times, and he has a story about nearly having to shoot Afghans that he's caught playing a game that he refers to as "puppy soccer", multiple times. As in, he ran across this phenomenon not once, but several times.

I'm sure it will. People take their pets as personally as their religion. Unfortunately I've observed that some people, especially certain women, seem to find stupid, dirty behavior in dogs as something to adore, not be repulsed by, or to train out of existence.

I think it's the same nurturing instinct that women have towards babies, except they transfer it to dogs (or in this case, puppies). Long story, or set of stories, involving the family of people I live with, that I'd rather not tell here... Feh.

I have two cats myself but I take great pains to clean up after them, make sure the catbox area is as clean as possible at all times, keep hair off my clothes, clean up and put the cats away if guests are stopping by, et cetera.

Muslims don't like dogs because the angel "Gabriel" didn't visit Mohammed one day because there was a puppy in the room. According to Mo, that's the reason Gabe missed the appointment. He then ordered all the dogs killed, puppies too. 50 other things Muslims don't want the world to know here.

re: #154 wolfie

My GUESS is that it ended up being prominent in Islam because Big Mo himself happened to be a dog-hater. It's all about Mo!

The cossetting of pets other than birds is a Western tradition. Almost all Eastern cultures have a dislike of dogs. It's not Islamic per se, although cleanliness is part of the reason they don't like dogs.

(You can't pray after you've touched a dog, a menstruating woman, or a dead body, etc.)

One thing is to dislike, another thing is to hate. Like this St. Cloud student learnt when he had to leave school, after a Muslim student threatened to kill his service dog:

A St. Cloud State University student in a teacher-training program at Technical High School left the school in late April because he says he feared for the safety of his service dog.

The school district calls it a misunderstanding, and officials there say they hoped Tyler Hurd, a 23-year-old junior from Mahtomedi who aspires to teach special education, would continue his training in the district.

Hurd said a student threatened to kill his service dog named Emmitt. The black lab is trained to protect Hurd when he has seizures.

The threat came from a Somali student who is Muslim, according to Hurd, St. Cloud State and school district officials.

The Muslim faith, which is the dominant faith of Somali immigrants, forbids the touching of dogs.

Hurd trained at Talahi Community School and Tech. He said his experience at Talahi was good. The Somali students there warmed to the dog and eventually petted him using paper to keep their hands off his fur, Hurd said.

Things didn’t go as well at Tech, Hurd said. Students there taunted his dog, and he finally felt he had to leave after he was told a student made a threat. Hurd met with Lockhart but said he did not feel comfortable continuing.

Steffens [Kate Steffens, dean of the college of education at St. Cloud State] said it is important to respect different cultures and the rights of disabled students.

“I think this is part of the growth process when we become more diverse,” Steffens said.

Sounds to me like diversity didn't exactly work out if the epileptic kid had to leave.

This is a political blog and I figured I needed a political nickname. Most lefties like to claim that anybody who isn't a "progressive" has somehow been duped by The Man. I'm also a fan of animation (I went to school to learn it, even) - have you ever seen Antz?

From Amazon:

Seaman, the Newfoundland who saved explorers Lewis and Clark from a marauding buffalo
Sergeant Stubby, the most decorated war dog in U.S. history
Laika, the first earthling of any kind to go into orbit

Sorry ... just one funny point... "outdated idolatry"? for Muslims!
I just want to collapse in hysterics at that term! Islam IS outdated idolatry! (no jab at you dear... just a barb aimed at Islam).

No offense taken, as I must agree, but when Islam came about, it was revolutionary for the Arabian peninsula bedouins. They had no real culture and no religion. They say Jews and Christians and Zoroastrians from a distance, and, lo, Mohammed said, we need some of that. So he did away with what he saw as the backwardness of the natives and invented a kick-ass ideology to unite the tribes so that he could destroy those made him feel inferior.

Islam is a great religion. It's a great religion for uniting semi-nomadic Arabs in the middle ages and turning them into a world-class army. The only wrinkle is that it doesn't go much beyond a battle cry.

Obama is probably one of those guys like me who pets a dog awkwardly, makes a little face at his hand, and then washes his hands afterwards.

...OK, I don't always do that, only if the dog is dirty. LOL.

If I ran for President I'd make sure to be photographed dog-sitting an entire pack of dogs, like those people you see out running with ten dogs on leashes. Or playing in the park with a big panting dog, or something. Americans like dogs and are suspicious of those who don't. Period.

Obama is either a cat person, or has no say in the family pet issue, because Michelle runs the house.

Interesting. Thanks. McCain is a huge pet lover and is said to own a "menagerie" of varied pets.

I dug up this recent AP poll on it, via Talking Points Memo. Dog owners love John McCain.

"The American Pet Product Manufacturers Association estimates that 63 percent of American homes include a pet, including 88 million cats and 75 million dogs.

Dog owners lean toward McCain, 43 percent to 34 percent, while cat owners basically divide their loyalties with 41 percent for McCain and 38 percent for Obama."

Oh, I only just saw this. The simple answer is that I felt X-Men was one of those films you had to have some background in, to fully appreciate. I remember one kid saying, "wow that's Magneto!" (sp?) during the film, and I had no idea what he was talking about. Shortly thereafter, I walked out.

So Mohammed was an ancient Howard Hughes? Bubble boy Mohammed.

Anyway, legend may have it that Mohammed liked cats, but cats must obey the same in/out physics as any animal, and cats often defy the litterbox if they are displeased or for whatever reason. I suppose Mo had all the wayward cats beheaded. But why didn't he just get a goldfish? A bit simpler to contain contamination.

Couldn't train the cats for anything. But one of them actually learned how to flush the toilet. She was fascinated with water and would bat at it as it came out of the faucet. In the middle of the night once, I was awoken by the flush of the toilet, only to look up and see her racing across the bedroom floor and down the hall. Apparently she had scared herself silly flushing the comode.

This is such a depressing religion, sorry if I offend.

Muslims certainly have a problem with menstrual blood. But halal blood after slitting an animals throat is okay, as is the blood resulting from killing an infidel. If they are so hung up on blood, why don't they advocate vegetarianism? Clearly, they are hung up on some reproduction-related blood but have no problem with blood relating to death.

So the most straightforward conclusion is that Islam has a problem with anything "bloody and unclean" related to life but revels in things that are "bloody and unclean" related to death. Ergo, Islam abhors life but loves death, which is pretty much what Islamists say.

"We tell them: in as much as you love life - the Muslim loves death and martyrdom."

They say Hitler, an admirer of Mo according to Speer, only had one testicle. Maybe it was because Hitler also tried to get it on with some unwilling participant that took a bite out of him.

You gotta wonder how much of history's atrocities are the result of men who were traumatized over losing a testicle.

As I recall the story, some British intelligence genius was just trying to help Adolf a bit by putting in a good word for him (well, more or less). It became a famous WW II song:

Hitler, he only had one ball,
Goering, he had two but very small,
Himmler had something simmler,
But poor old Goebbels had no balls at all

Full words to the song are at [Link: ingeb.org...]

(Dunno why we don't fight wars like that any longer. Right now the Arab world should be ringing with songs that explain Osama's love for goats, why Wahabbi is just another word for camel-groper, and catchy tunes about cowardly jihadis' adventures with Hellfire missiles. Might hurt a few feelings here and there, but that sorta happens if one takes on the English-speaking world ;-).)

When I think about the nights when Roxy Music's Avalon played in practically every dorm room, and we did lots of things most of us should never have done at all, at all, but somehow don't regret - I remember a guy in the hall begging "someone, ravish me!" (though I didn't) - I wonder if, knowing what I know now, I might not have been kinder, or at least less self-indulgent.

Definitions of "hand basket", "hell", and "self-destruction" are all very different when it comes to Pakistan.

Interesting that they attacked the Indian Embassy. It would make more sense to me if the AQ-affiliated groups on the Indian border had tried to start something as well. Provoke India AND attempt to overthrow the Pakistani .gov from within, maybe? I.E. just flat-out destroy the country?

Why not? Instability is their bread and butter, and they have previously demonstrated themselves to be tactically cunning, thoroughly delusional, and utterly ignorant, all at the same time. These are the people that think they were the reason the Soviet Union fell, and who think that losing two buildings in Manhattan would be enough to economically destroy the United States. Sitting there in their respective tribal crapholes, with all kinds of friends and intel feelers extending into the Pakistani government and beyond, and seeing that a wider local conflict might bear the fruit of lawlessness which they so cherish, why not see if they can start something bigger?

I suspect both the attacks were designed to isolate Pakistan. The attack in Kabul and the cross border incident seem designed to wreck the fragile alliance between the US and Pakistan.
The attack on the Indian Embassy looks like an attempt to draw India into yet another war. Also given the recent, US/India Nuclear treaty I believe the "Militants" want to make the average Pakistani feel like the US is attacking them from both the west and the south. If the "Man on the Pakistan street" feels threatened enough they are likely to favor an Al-Qaeda type resistance
The Pakistan government isn't doing themselves any favors by trying to appease the tribal areas.

Today’s not so tricky question of the day.

What is the significance of the maps contained in the MESH post, Media mapping of Iran’s missile range,

This week, Iranian television showed missile test launches that included a new version of the Shahab-3 missile, which Tehran claims can travel 2,000 kilometers, or 1,250 miles.

as the missile range would affect and pertain to today’s post, Making Mediterranean waves?

Today (Sunday) is the inaugural conference in Paris of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). French President Nicholas Sarkozy, father of the idea, originally proposed a body independent of the EU, linking together all the states bordering the Mediterranean sea.

Mornin folks.

Hey nocturnal Lizards, I just finished a story on AQ in Pakistan
Al-Qaeda attempts to force Pakistan into a Two Front War

Two recent attacks week seem designed to force the Pakistan government to chose between being overthrown by al-Qaeda or being devastated in a two front war with the US/Afghanistan on the northwest and India on the south east. Even worse members of the Pakistani government seem to be collaberating.

I'd appreciate any criticism.

So my mom is over the other day and starts ranting about how we're in a recession. Now I wasn't going to argue that the nation is indeed faced with some tough months ahead because of the credit and mortgage crisis and some other troubling economic indicators, but having a simple BA in Economics, that she helped pay for, I explained to her the definition of a recession. "Mom, a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth, based on GDP." " Really" she says, well we're in for tough times, so be prepared, put a little extra away."
Obama Says Little Doubt Country In A Recession

Maybe Obama needs a dictionary. What a moron. The more I hear him speak off page, the more I realize I have more life experience and am far more well read than this blowhard. How in the world is this happening? He's like the geek in class you learn isn't really very smart at all. He just studied for exams all the time. Keep up the great work, I never thought their were others like myself out there until I started reading your site.

It is such a joke, that the MSM can't bring themselves to take the label off of LGF as a Right wing, or conservative blog. You do support some of the agenda of such beliefs, but it is clear to me you report what the MSM runs from. The truth.

Not Palestinian propaganda, not religious zealotry, just plain and obvious facts they seem to ignore.

re: #358 steveoh

Lots of people need a dictionary. Especially the media that has been pushing for a recession for more than a year, but have been interrupted by facts. So, now recession is defined as how people feel rather than two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

Because the fact that the economy is strong despite the housing market readjustments would really put a crimp in the media's worldview (and add to the fact that they were flat out wrong about the situation in Iraq).

I liked the Happy Days episode where Richie ran for Student Council President, promising among other things to have the lines in the student parking lot angled because "I'm sure everyone agrees that angled parking spaces are a lot easier to get into."

He lost to his opponent who promised "shorter classes, and beer on campus!"

The markets this past week got spooked by the whole housing mess spilling over into Fannie and Freddie. That's why the markets went down hard. And it's only been the last week when you could officially claim that there's a bear market. That's after months upon months of the media reporting that the economy is in a downturn.

I'm still checking in here at LGF but I'm mostly watching Pakistan meltdown

It's amazing what a difference a little bit of will and the help of U.S. troops can do. Look at how Iraq is destroying al-Qaeda and becoming ever more stable and secure.

The stupid Pakistanis, after a few weeks of al-Qaeda and the Taliban ruling over them, will be begging for salvation from the U.S. Of course none will be forthcoming, since al-Q and the Taliban will have nukes.

I think you've just discovered one of the unifying themes of LGF, which zombie commented on indirectly earlier.

This is a blog defending rationalism. Islam is certainly the largest, most violent group of irrational actors out there, but it's not the only irrationality LGF has become concerned with. The 9/11 "troofers", the racists and anti-semites working their way into national politics (from the right or left), those who would invoke science for political ends (whether global warmers or ID advocates), multiculturalists who would excuse the irrational violence of jihad and surrender the West, these have all received attention at one time or another.

And for people to make rational decisions in our democracy, one has to ensure that the evidence and information underlying those decisions is as accurate and unbiased as possible. The other major LGF theme of challenging media bias and media fraud and fauxtography is connected with that.

The cult of personality surrounding the presumptive Democratic nominee is remarkable in its irrationality, and has been commented upon here, just as the cult of personality surrounding Ron Paul has been.

Those who have a rational contribution to make and can defend their arguments honestly and courteously are welcome at LGF.

For the rest, the ban stick awaits...

Yes we can... can't we?

ABC News asked a panel of military logistical experts about Obama's pleadge to withdraw from Iraq within 16 months. Even if they started immediately after innaugeration day, the professional opinion is that it would not be possible.

The Candidate will probably pivot on this issue as well; but the sheer physical impracticability of his plans means his staff didn’t do their homework well. Don’t we all laugh when Bruno Ganz, playing Hitler in the movie Downfall, gives orders for attacks by nonexistent armies and instructs his commanders to perform impossible evolutions? Obama is no Hitler, but he is running for the position of Commander in Chief and it is somewhat embarrassing for him not only to have promised — but to have run for office on the basis of an order of doubtful feasibility. Then what happens if, as is possible, trouble starts in the middle of a withdrawal with these thousands of vehicles on the road?

Of course Obama was not alone in demanding this. An entire ideological movement has made the logistically impossible the cornerstone of their political platform, some even suggesting that troops be pulled back as far as Okinawa. Since neither Obama nor all of his followers can be considered stupid the reason for these impossible demands must be that they either have not given the matter serious thought or simply engaging in an “I want” moment, where you don’t care about feasibility. You simply demand that something take place: I want world peace, I want a world without military expenditures, I want guaranteed health care and I want Jerusalem to be the capital of a united Israel and Palestine. The danger with the slogan “yes we can” is that sometime you can’t.

During the Vietnam War there was a lot of talk about the “limits of American power”; and I’ve always wondered whether this was subject to the same constraints that govern the limits of liberal fantasy.

Logistics Contra Obama

Trucks. Ships. Planes. Moving people and things. Why, geography– and we’re not talking a mind glitch like 57 states. This is about a basic understanding of material reality, not political poetry. Obama may move hearts with a well-turned phrase, and get Chris Matthews knees to tingle, but how good is he at scheduling convoys? The image the hard left has of a US withdrawal is a helicopter fetching fleeing staff from the top of the Saigon, Vietnam embassy. That’s the liturgical icon of the “withdraw now” crowd. Of course I think Obama will “refine” his Iraqi policy so that it becomes something very much like–well, like Bush’s.

We’ve an emerging success in Iraq –the Strategic Overwatch scenario in this post provides an analytic a projection. This success has been building for four years and unfortunately it will take a decade for politicized passions to cool before the sober reassessment occurs. Then we’ll be bombarded with theses and books and a few mea culpas about the trail of successes evident amid the failures, the dead, the bombs, the terror. In war the enemy gets a vote. The good guys also get a vote. Over time the votes mount up, the destruction mounts, but so does the construction. In Iraq the construction by the Iraqi people and the coalition is mounting. In Iraq the enemy –Al Qaeda, the Saddamists, Shia gangsters– had the tactically “easy” route: destruction and chaos designed to obtain psychologically damaging headlines and spread fear and doubt. The Iraqi people and the coalition had to construct as well as fight. That’s tough tactically and operationally but strategically wise.

Given Iran's difficulty in their recent missile tests, they would likely miss their target while inviting sure anihilation by launching on Israel.

ESP WHEN IT IS -10 DEGREES OUT that i have a cat and not a dog.

besides it is nice to have a mouse free apt.

If you have a yard and a good dog you don't have to go out with them.

You have a Satanic boss? Don't forget to wear a string of garlic round our neck. Are you trying to move your job (again)?

Annnnd I am back. I hate work and fire alarm testing. Maybe I should put in for PTSD. Every time the bells go off I cringe. :(

My hearing is very acute, and alarms give me a terrible headache. I feel your pain.

Dream? That sounds like a nightmare.

I'm not a "cat person", but I did hear a good joke cat lovers may enjoy.
A dog was out wondering in the woods doing what dogs do, looking for something to roll in,or lift it's leg on.
Not paying particular attention to where it was stepping, the dog stepped in a trap.
Time passed and eventually a cat came strolling up to the entrapped dog.
The cat in it's typical snobby nature said,"Why don't you just chew your leg off and be on your way?"
The dog replied,"I already tried that three time and I'm still stuck!"

I dreamed an entire murder mystery, including hiding a dead body and blackmail. Very creepy...

True with that whack job it is. But I think some of the mullahs may be moderately sane.

So, yesterday hubby finds a fledgling robin that had fallen out of the nest. We couldn't get to the nest. Animal control told me to build one, which I did in a little paper bowl with some grass, etc. I put it in a fork in the same tree that I could reach. It even accepted some water. Sure enough, within in hour its mother showed up and fed it.

Three hours later it fell out again! I went outside to put it back in and it kept jumping out. Then 2 absolutely hysterical robins showed up and dive bombed the hell out of me. I had to retreat.

Now we can't find it. Damn.

Torror plot poll

Most people in Ontario are convinced that an alleged terror plot foiled in the summer of 2006 was a serious threat, according to a poll by Angus Reid Strategies. 59 per cent of respondents in Canada’s most populous province think that the so-called Toronto 18 really planned to attack the cities of Toronto and Ottawa.

The alleged terror plot was a fantasy: 13%

The alleged terror plot was serious: 59%

Not sure: 28%

Does this mean only 13% of Ontarians are moonbats? I'm impressed!

Michelle Obama, out of touch with the electorate. What else is new?

But what it also did today for Senator Obama, it covered up a couple of things on his own campaign that he didn't want to be leading the program tonight, Michelle Obama out today talking about these rebates don't amount to much, $600. Well, you just go out there and spend that on a pair of earrings.

Well, you know, a lot of people don't buy $600 earrings. So, this story smothered those kinds of things. And I think this was a real gift to Barack Obama. [Link: transcripts.cnn.com...]

I bet the majority of the 13% and 28% were from the Toronto and Ottawa areas.

/major moonbats in both areas.
