Kali the Destroyer, the goddess worshipped by the bloodthirsty cult of the Thugi in 19th century India, is also the Hindu goddess of education, because education is the destruction of ignorance.

Having died in 1900, Wilde was saying something quite remarkable. Not only did he pinpoint the fundamental building block of the universe (hydrogen), but he also explained what dark matter is: It's stupidity.

17 leboaz  Sun, Jul 13, 2008 12:15:26pm

Note to Zombie- and others
Just finished a book titled 'The Bedtime Tales' with many great short stories. The jacket says it was a gift to my father in 1945. One of the stories was titled "Slummer's Paradise", by Herbert Asbury. Pretty much puts into perspective how things got to be the way they are in San Francisco. I suggest you find a couple of minutes to dig up a copy of this and read it. Probably a classic in the bay area, but it was new to this old hick.

Here's a discussion of that at Powerline:

28 Charles  Sun, Jul 13, 2008 12:25:44pm

At the Panda's Thumb blog, Timothy Sandefur has been occasionally linking to LGF, and there's at least one person there who's freaking out about it.

However, the pragmatic part of my post - essentially, the point that if PT allows uncritical links to right wing sources, with no comments allowed, something embarrassing and inappropriate is sure to be linked - still causes me concern. LGF is already really pushing the envelope quite vigorously. A fair proportion of the US scientific community is of Muslim heritage, as are large numbers of law-abiding US citizens who aren’t involved in trying to violate anyone’s rights. LGF is usually thought of as being out there with Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh, which is not to say that every single idea expressed there is wrong or offensive, but some of it probably is

Very bad news:

Insurgents kill 9 U.S. troops in Afghanistan

Insurgents killed nine U.S. soldiers in an assault on an Afghan army and NATO outpost in northeastern Afghanistan on Sunday, making it one of the worst days for foreign troops casualties in the country since 2001.

Details are scarce but Taliban apparently infiltrated homes and a mosque near the outpost and opened fire at close range. The battle continued for several hours.
The situation in Afghanistan has definitely deteriorated with the terrorists apparently benefiting from a friendlier regime in neighboring Pakistan.

With the war in Iraq almost won, look for lefties and liberals to drop their phony bait-and-switch support for the Afghan operation, and return to the kind of shameless defeatism and Taliban cheerleading we saw before the Iraq operation started.

Harold, feel free to continue at AtBC or the bathroom thread. This is a final warning. PT has a variety of contributors from all walks of life, if you do not like Sandefur then ignore his postings or consider the use of free blog sites such as blogger to set up a ‘why I hate Sandefur’ blog. This whining is just getting old and is unnecessarily distracting. You have been heard and I am with you that Sandefur’s links are not always linking to the best sites but then again, different people get their information from different sites. I sometimes link to UcD or other ill informed sites, which does not mean that I agree with said content or with the site itself. Most newsites would quickly drop off my radar screen if I were to ignore them based on their biases.

Ah, so they did, The other article the linked to is very enlightening as well...
While secularists sleep well-funded creationists are on the march in Europe

Clearly, for the assembly, the report amounted to strong evidence that creationists were working strategically across Europe, with the aim of influencing the science curriculum as well as public opinion. Though it does not say so explicitly the implication of the report is that creationists of different denominations and faiths are, or might soon be, working together in a concerted assault on science teaching, in the same way that American creationists have been for the past decade. In response to the call for action from the Assembly, only the Swedish government acted promptly, swiftly issuing a general ban on the teaching of creationism and Intelligent Design in their schools.

I suggest you find a couple of minutes to dig up a copy of this and read it. Probably a classic in the bay area, but it was new to this old hick.

I'll try to dig up a copy and check it out. I've never heard of it before. Thanks!

The funny thing is I didn't even really want it. I forgot to cancel my Conservative Book Club order for the month and wound up with it and The Ten Books that Screwed up the World. (However I found the internet version to be much better than that one.)

NDP = DFC as far as I'm concerned.

Don't forget to cash in your 401(k) and stock up on gold and silver.

I find it difficult to credit that Oscar Wilde is the source of this quote:

a) It is unlikely that Wilde wrote anything at all about hydrogen, and

b) The term "shelf life" as a generally-used phrase is very, very recent; probably not more than fifty or so years old. It is highly unlikely that it was in use, let alone current, in Wilde's time.

Shelf Life was supposedly first seen in use in 1927Etymology

Or here. 1925-1930.

So, since Wilde died in 1900, that would lead to the belief this isn't his quote.

Charles is a freaking evil genius. Here's the quote.

That's it, thank you. My version appears to have been edited slightly, but the point is still the same. Count on young Lizards to find these things without going through my dusty old library.

DOH.....................The quote it would seem is actually from Frank Zappa.....

The quote is attributed to Oscar Wilde by World of Quotes as coming from An Ideal Husband (act II). A search of the plays Act 2 however reveals that the quote is not in that play.

Which shows that most of what is on the Internet (and believed primarily by Lefty and his/her/its kind) is bullshit.

I'm sure I will agree with you, but I am unfamiliar with "DFC" - pardon my ignorance.

Did anyone else see the Book TV bit this morning re Iran and Israel's options?
It's not looking like there is a lot of time left.

Wow. There's a worse choice than Obama in November.
