It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.

Hey I have a restaurant question!

Is it still legal to pay for your meals at a sit-down restaurant using cash? If so, when did they pass a law that the change will be rounded to the nearest dollar? And, should that be rounded up, or down?

I find one local bistro rounds up, the other down. I am bemused in either case.

This is interesting. Not ID vs evolution interesting, but interesting.

Guided by the pristine myth, mainstream environmentalists want to preserve as much of the world's land as possible in a putatively intact state. But "intact," if the new research is correct, means "run by human beings for human purposes." Environmentalists dislike this, because it seems to mean that anything goes. In a sense they are correct. Native Americans managed the continent as they saw fit. Modern nations must do the same. If they want to return as much of the landscape as possible to its 1491 state, they will have to find it within themselves to create the world's largest garden.

Message for UncleSam (and other Lizards who gave an opinion last night):

I just came back from watching Hellboy II. Even in the last-showing on Sunday night, there was not a seat to be had in the house. Word of mouth must be excellent.

Remember I said I didn't like comics adaptations? Hellboy is the exception. It was amazing. Go watch it, in case you haven't.

Thanks for the tips, earlier.

re: #42 DesertSage

I took about another ounce out of the crankcase today, and got it down to the safe zone. Might have to add maybe a half ounce just to bring it back to the top of the range.

That's the crappy thing about scooters - and in particular, plastic-covered, Chinese scooters. I'm a guy who likes to get into the engine, and do my own work. But with a scooter, you have to pull off the shell. This involves a lot of screws, then carefully pulling apart the panels. They have tabs on them that help keep the plastic from warping, and it's very easy to break them.

That being said, the engine sounds like it's running a little smooter, and there was a few fragments in the oil screen, so it needed an oil change.

Now, here's a scooter I could work on.

After you drained the oil and refilled it, did you start it up before you checked it? The oil needs to get into all of the engine parts before you can get a proper reading.
Also, did you change the oil filter? That can hold a few onces on a bike your size.

More on the New Yorker cover fall-out. The Dems are twisting themselves inside-and-out about it. Most fail to see the humour of the satire and a few want the New Yorker to pull the magazine this week (oh, freedom of speech sweet irony, booyeah!).

The best lame-o rebuttal comes from Taylor Marsh:

Another way to look at it is to ask whether John McCain would get a dose of this from The New Yorker. Picture a drawing showing a very old man in a wheelchair, his hospital gown adorned with medals... babe of a wife pushing him, as his first wife wipes drool off of McCain's mouth... while Cindy McCain stops to open packages from Chanel. No, I didn't think so either.

Paris Hilton’s Hollywood mansion is up for sale for $4.3 million. They said the home is equipped with a professional video studio. Or as Paris calls it, the master bedroom.

I sure hope you're right PBJ, I sure do and I will post if I do hear from him.
He did say in his e-mail this morning that he had slept for a long time and was confused about the time he was supposed to call me - e-mailed that to me at 3:40AM; I got it and replied immediately at about 8:00AM - nada since then nor since my other two e-mails.
Shit.

He's probably got his kids telling him not to e-mail or something. The fact that he e-mailed you is very good news. Heck, sometimes I don't know what time it is when I wake up and I didn't have a stroke. Hopefully, for our buddy, it really was a mild one.

I'm going to write a blogpost soon about that.

Cindy McCain:

- Has doubled her father's fortune since she took over his business.
- Has fought against landmines for years with Halo Trust.
- Regularly travels abroad to Nicaragua, Kuwait, Rwanda, Vietnam, Bangladesh, to give supplies and aid, not to mention their time and presence to distressed people.
- Is a strong fundraiser for Project Smile and CARE.
- Donates 200,000 to charity every year.
- Adopted a Bangladeshi girl who needed severe reconstructive cleft-palate surgery.

Michelle Obama:

- Is a lawyer.

But for MSM, Michelle is an unrivalled heroine of the underclass, whereas Cindy McCain is nothing more than a former addict debutante airhead trophy wife. Yeah right.

I am just in the beginning of the commentaries, but this is the one which popped out:

Everyone who has a New Yorker subscription needs to get on the phone right now to the magazine's offices. Let them know that if they publish this, you will cancel your subscription.

And if they do publish it, follow through on your threat. This is outrageous. I can't even imagine the National Review getting away with such a cover, snark or not. Most Americans won't see the "irony".

For 8 years, we have been treated to Rolling Stone magazine and other covers with the most insulting depictions of a sitting US president -- and we had to take it, else be thought lacking humour.

Well, take it now, you total hypocritical double-talking fascist morons.

OK, so now that "PBJ" is off to bed, I can talk about Fanny Mae and Freddy Mac again.

So, if the government (or one of their socialist home-mortgage racketeers), perhaps via Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, or a loan held in trust via the FDIC, owns your home, does that change in any way the search and seizure laws?

E.g., do you really have the same right to privacy (or the veneer thereof), as if when the government didn't own your home?

Anyone? Anyone, ... Bueller?

a reasonable expectation of privacy is just that, no matter who owns the property where you reside. They cannot be subject to any search nor seizure without the proper steps being taken.

That's a relief, otherwise how would all the drug smugglers be able to fence their goods through through cheap government loan-guaranteed housing!

I don't know the way it's done in the states but up here in Canuckistan CHMC insures the mortgage for the bank. The bank itself has first call on the loan if it's foreclosed. It's a bit more detailed then that. Are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac actually banks? Or do they insure the loan?

that's not the worst part of those "section 8's" It's the blight they bring with them to the entire neighborhood. Interesting study done which showed that after public housing towers were demo'd and the occupants were given rent and where ever they went, those little red/blue/yellow dots indicating robbery/burglary/assault etc. soon followed.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can either insure the loan, or themselves own the loan.

However, independent of them, there may be even more complicated cases, where the loan is owned by a bank originally (e.g., IndyMac), but is then seized by the FDIC - so the gov't owns it in this case too...

Sounds like a real mess down there. I bet there's a whole industry of consultants that assists and tracks that stuff.

336 blackpajamas  Sun, Jul 13, 2008 11:49:06pm

Also, as per BlueCanuck's general inquiry, people in the U.S., who qualify, can get loans directly, through the Federal Housing Authority (FHA); the same FHA for which Congress recently passed a bill to expand their loaning capacity to people with really, really, bad credit!

338 BlueCanuck  Sun, Jul 13, 2008 11:52:00pm

re: #336 blackpajamas

Thankfully up here that isn't a problem. In order to qualify for a CMHC coverage, you must have at least 5% of the total mortgage, be a first time home buyer, and qualify at a bank for the mortgage. It used to be 10% but it was lowered about 10 years ago after the real estate market took off. In essence we don't have the sub prime mess up here that you guys are experiencing. Also our mortgages are calculated differently as well. Interest is calculated semiannually rather than annually.

re: #335 BlueCanuck

Sounds like a real mess down there. I bet there's a whole industry of consultants that assists and tracks that stuff.

The real danger is that the U.S. government only makes things worse with their interference.

However, that is not to say that short-term bailout solutions do not have their merit - although there are still side effects, like growing the size of the federal gov't (which has a remarkable way of never shrinking).

The real solution, the necessary solution, for the scope outside of the immediate short term, is to abolish quasi-government monopoly holders like Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae; as they have special borrowing privileges that no other companies in the U.S., have - privileges that their execute staff have abused, and for which they shall be punished, and allow private industry to shoulder the mortgage holding and insurance business in a market oriented manner without government interference and inefficiency.

OK, time for my midnight feeding.

In parting, I'll mention a bright light I saw this weekend from here:

"McCain is going to have to focus his campaign on just 3-4 themes, and then sharpen them, simplify them, and contrast them with Obama. E.g…

Illegal Immigration: We can talk all we want about “comprehensive immigration reform” but it won’t matter if we don’t close the border—now. I will; my opponent won’t. Close the border now, and all the contentious issues—amnesty, guest workers, fines and deportation—can be dealt with as the pool of illegal aliens shrinks rather grows."

heh heh, it's past the Midnight hour for me. The weather hasn't been too bad here either. Humidity is half decent, not too hot during the day, and just enough rain to keep the grasses green. Summer is such a crapshoot around here.

re: #351 Karridine

Yeah, it can be like that here too. What we get for living in such a moisture rich area. I have always lived in a city that was beside a lake. It makes a big difference in humidty. The only time I didn't really have that problem was the summer I spent in Brandon Manitoba. Nearest lake was almost three hours away.

Did nothing but fish, read, talk philosophy, and listen to the olympics on CBC radio. Only other sounds of civilization was the sound of the train horns way off in the distance.

Yeah... the ID threads are undergoing mitosis I believe... more of them as time passes...

If I feel I can add anything I try to give some links or explanations, meanwhile trying to not get in the middle of the inevitable squabbles between clashing personalities... It is an important topic that many blogs on the "right" have shied away from... but discomfort is not sufficient reason to avoid these discussions IMO.

re: #418 Neo Con since 9-11

Fruitcup is an old, established tradition at LGF, going back to the Mike C. days when HE was the one shooting for "Good morning" at exactly 5 am Eastern (even though he was usually elsewhere in the world.) When he was late he got a razzing based upon the rotating title: Those who are tardy do not get fruit cup.

It...evolved since then. ;-)

A car gets a flat on the interstate one day. The blonde driver eases it over onto the shoulder of the road, carefully steps out of the car and opens the trunk. She takes out two cardboard men, unfolds them and stands them at the rear of the vehicle facing oncoming traffic. The lifelike cardboard men are in trench coats exposing their nude bodies and private parts to approaching drivers.

Not surprisingly, the traffic becomes snarled and backed up.
It isn't very long before a police car arrives. The officer, clearly
enraged, approaches the blonde of the disabled vehicle yelling, "What's going on here?"

"My car broke down, officer" says the woman calmly.

"Well, what the hell are these obscene cardboard pictures doing here by the road?" he asks.

"Helllooooooo!" says the blonde. "Those are my emergency flashers!"

It's my personal opinion(don't take it the wrong way) that Americans were inherently lazy in some aspects. Why use an extra letter that was silent?

508 goddessoftheclassroom  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 4:17:58am

Okay, I can't resist--when your eyes glaze over, feel free to move on.

Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization did not begin to become standardized until the 18th century when the first dictionaries were written. Scholarly work was written in Latin, so English as a language wasn't really taught in schools. In an effort to bring some organization to English, various scholars created dictionaries, the most famous of which was Dr. Johnson's.

After America got on her feet, Noah Webster and others felt that American should be a separate language to establish further her independence. HE was the one who took out the "u" from the "-our" words and reversed the -re to -er in "centre," ect.

And you know the symbol in 19th century printing that looks like a long F? It stands for a double S, and printers used it to save type.

i have seen that 's' form used as a second 's' but the first 's' was still there.

hebrew used to have a ligature that was a combination of a 'alef and a lamed' there was also a different style of letter used when G-D name was printed.

re: #524 yochanan

Quick jump in. The french in Quebec is properly stylized quebecois. It is similar to french, but an apt comparison would be scottish highland to american southwest. There are a lot more english words in quebecois with a "French" sound then in parisian french.

529 yochanan  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 4:36:33am

re: #527 BlueCanuck

quebec was rather isolated from france for a couple of hundred years plus i think it mostly came from britney so it was different from the french spoken in the ile de france to begin with.
I think it is with the invention of t.v. and radio were this is becoming noticable as people hear both kinds right next to each other.

I remember hearing a story of a guy from new orleans who though he spoke french when he was stationed in france during WW2 and they could barely understand each other and was easier to just speak english.

I'll second that.
I see snide comments from both sides that are completely unncecessary and add nothing to the debate except to wound the feelings of others. That has to stop.

Aside from the occasional rudeness, though, it's fascinating reading.

I have a real problem with the subversive fundamentalist agenda of the Discovery Institute, and I'm glad that Charles is taking this topic on.

I'm quite sure that Charles is not posting on this topic to hurt people... pulling the shroud of deception away from organizations like the DI, and exposing back-door agendas that will infringe upon our basic freedoms is very important to him, and he never shrinks from discussing unpleasant topics to do so. Even if it has the troublesome effect of upsetting people that he cares about.

The truth matters to him. It matters to me, too.

Market Update:

I know some folks have been very nervous about the status of Famnnie Mae and Freddy Mac secutirties, and there has been some misinformation floating around. Upshot is Fannie and Freddy will be just fine, especially with Bernanke opening the discount window last Friday to them. I talked to several traders last Friday, who wer in the process of buying up all the stock they could grab cause they were such a bargain.

Freddie, Fannie rally as Treasury sets 'backstop' plan

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac both rose more than 25% Monday, a day after Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson unveiled a government plan to provide financial support to the two government-sponsored mortgage buyers.

So if you are holding some Fannie Mae or Freddy Mac bonds, you should be fine. If you held the stock and were able to weather the storm, I think it will be back to normal values soon. There have been some incredible profit opportunites out there in the past few days too.

I do expect to see several banks and make a brokerage or two go belly up before this is all done.

"Taliban Attack Was Well Planned"

You don't have to squint to hard to read between the lines. These guys write breathlessly about what brilliant tacticians the taliban are, how glorious their victory is, how our puny earth weapons are powerless to stop them.

Towards the end though, they do have to point out that our soldiers kicked the living sh*t out of them. (As they always do)

The MSM is just praying for a tet offensive so they declare America's defeat.

In my world the perfect breakfast would be an Irish breakfast. You'd be having fried eggs, bangers, rashers, black and white puddings, baked beans, grilled tomatos, and thick-cut Irish oatmeal with real cream and demerara sugar along with your tea or coffee. Served on a lace tablecloth with the best china and a napkin of the finest Irish linen, of course.

As I've said before, my only comment on this issue is that I am personally saddened and grieved to see some, on both sides, use the debate as an excuse to be mean, nasty, and ugly.

It is also giving Charles some heartburn with the people who, rather than simply ignoring the thread, comment that they are not going to comment in the thread.

Starting to really piss him off. I'm not going to comment about it though.

re: #589 irish rose

In my world the perfect breakfast would be an Irish breakfast. You'd be having fried eggs, bangers, rashers, black and white puddings, baked beans, grilled tomatos, and thick-cut Irish oatmeal with real cream and demerara sugar along with your tea or coffee. Served on a lace tablecloth with the best china and a napkin of the finest Irish linen, of course.

The reality is that I'm drinking black coffee, and eating a bowl of cold cereal standing over the kitchen sink.

Best breakfast I had in Ireland was in the Bunratty Castle Hotel. It was just like that.

Good for both of you. When I was in college I had a four octave range and really hated standing in front of the piano doing scales for my vocal instructor. He wanted me to sing opera, his name was Micheal Pollack, his wife was Beverly Sills. It was very intimidating since I somehow actually knew who she was...

"FLOWER DUET"

That's gorgeous. That reminds me, I've been meaning to rent some musicals to watch with my 5 year old daughter. She loves Mary Poppins and Sound of Music. Maybe My Fair Lady next, not sure.

I liked Oliver when I was a kid but it's probably because I related to the scruffy trouble making kids.

Hey, it's embarrasing to admit I like musicals but I grew up with them. I assure you I'm all man. I also listen to AC/DC and Led Zep.

Yes, and I saw where he has had to stop the bicycle threads cause of personal threats. Very sorry to see that.

Not that I would recommend this to anybody else, but some time ago I was receiving personal threats (long story) and handled it this way: I was able to get the jerk mad enough to call me. I told him any time he thought he was man enough to do something about it, to call me and let me know when and where. I recognized the voice, set a time and place with the guy and the authorities took care of the rest.

10 years ago or so, I was on a plane with the rap group "Naughty By Nature"...sat beside "Treach". 7am flight. He'd been up all night partying...talked to him the entire flight.

Heh. Was the nightmare seat companion on purpose.

Bet he remembers me til this day.

At the end of the flight, I told him good naturedly as I could, "I bet it is a pain to have people want to talk to you, being famous and all."

He said, "Nah, sometimes get's rough tho."

I said, "Ya know, if you didn't wear your Naughty By Nature jacket, people might not recognize you and leave you alone."

I left unsaid, that they are so "thug" looking, many people'd be terrified of them.

Upshot is Fannie and Freddy will be just fine, especially with Bernanke opening the discount window last Friday to them.

Did you see Clive Crook's column in the FT today?

Covering the agencies’ losses on their loans and guarantees is going to require an actual outlay, which will fall on taxpayers. You could plausibly call the rest – namely, bringing these “government-sponsored enterprises” explicitly inside the public sector – just a bookkeeping entry. But what an entry! It would surely shake financial markets, raise the government’s cost of funding and put heavy downward pressure on the dollar. Meanwhile, the turmoil impedes or paralyses the GSEs in their crucial life-support role for the housing market.

So explain to me how this doesn't come out of my wallet?

Besides, why resort to that kind of tasteless cover art (besides the obvious need of the New Yorker to attract attention outside the doctors offices) when the reality of Obama's positions are so much worse.

He flips. He flops. He flips back.
And that's just on the status of Jerusalem.

He's worse on the issue of Iraq, where hasty retreat and Obama are synonymous even as the surge worked.

And his domestic policy can be summed up thusly: tax, tax, and tax some more. Oil companies are one of his favorite whipping boys, and his energy policy doesn't create a single watt of new power or a single barrel of new oil.

McCain - please call VDH - he has some good advise for you.

Energy: I’m as much for wind, solar, and conservation as Barack Obama. But for now at present rates of consumption and production, we will go bankrupt in the transition to green energy. So I will drill off the coast, develop tar sands and shale, use clean coal, and build more refineries and nuclear power plants to ensure that we don’t keep sending trillions to our enemies, that we don’t leave our poor without transportation and heating, that we don’t allow sloppy foreign state energy companies to pollute the planet, and that we don’t bankrupt our treasury. My opponent is captive to radical environmentalists whose restrictive policies helped to get us into this mess; he’ll talk about green power, as we go broke and run out fuel listening.

No kidding - Bud was brewed from RICE, not barley and corn? Must be why Bud always gave me a headachy hangover while all other beers just gave me a queasy stomach type of hangover!

It's on the label, realwest.

The original Budweiser pledge reads "We guarantee that this beer is brewed especially for our own trade according to the Budweiser process of choicest hops, best barley and rice. This beer is brewed in St. Louis and warranted to keep in any climate. Take notice that all crowns are branded with our trade-mark." The last sentence was altered slightly in the early 1900s to read: "Take notice that all crowns bear our trade-mark."

It was altered again, albeit briefly, to read as follows: "We guarantee that this beverage is healthful, refreshing, nutritious, free from bacteria, fully matured and aged, will keep in any climate, and fermented in St. Louis. Take note that all crowns bear our 'A' and 'Eagle' trade mark". This pledge was reverted to the second pledge after only a few years.

The current pledge was placed on the bottle some time around the end of the Second World War. It reads: "This is the famous Budweiser beer. We know of no brand produced by any other brewer which costs so much to brew and age. Our exclusive Beechwood Aging produces a taste, a smoothness and a drinkability you will find in no other beer at any price."

Actually, the ball remains in the hands of Congressional Democrats who have a moratorium of their own on offshore drilling.

Bush wanted the Congress to act first, but they haven't. So Bush lifted the Executive Order for a moratorium on offshore drilling in place since President Reagan.

Now, Congressional Democrats have to choose. Higher gas prices and the ire of voters in November, or breaking with their econuts who want to strangle the economy in every conceivable manner.

The folks that build the rigs aren't the oil companies as we know them. Exxon/Mobil doesn't build the rigs, they buy/lease them from others.

And offshore drilling has complications in addition to the normal complications of drilling. Being, well...offshore.

Nuclear is the way to go man. We have a coal plant in Jax, but it still uses the cooling towers associated with nuclear power. It looks like a nuc plant from far away until you get closer and see the containers of coal wrapped around the plant.

I had an argument with my father in law. He said "that's a nuclear plant - it has the towers" I told him they were just cooling towers we don't have nuclear here. I heard once the cooling towers were actually designed by a kid a long time ago. ( i heard that from a friend not sure of its accuracy). He didn't believe me until we got closer to the plant. and then he said "dirty bastards" LOL.

Cooling towers

Haven't heard of the 3 Mile Island...

Chernoble though was the russians saying... "hmm, I wonder what would happen if we caused a meltdown with no safety precautions in place?" then proceeding shut down ALL of their safety backups and other systems, then overloading the core.

I sincerely doubt anybody would be that stupid again.

Nuclear generators (at least in Canada) have so many precautions it's INCREDIBLY unlikely for their to be any problems.

They shut down one reactor because inspectors discovered that the switch on the backup-backup-power generator was not seismically shielded.

In other words, there would have had to be a power-outage, the first generator would have had to malfunction, AND an earthquake all at the same time for their to be any problems... in which case the Nuclear Reactors' "Emergency Brake" system would kick in and core would stop reacting anyway.

The runup in prices has seen a spate in construction orders for drill ships. More ships are expected to be available next year and in successive years - with drill ship orders double what they were two or three years ago.

I also forgot to mention that the actual numbers of affected were immensely inflated.

A little over 50 or so died as a direct result, and there were a lot of residual effect on the environment and such. It was still a great tragedy, but its been completely skewed by environmentalists to make it worse than it was.

I've seen you posting for a while, but it wasn't till earlier this morning that it really clicked that you were a teacher.

What ages do you teach?

Damn. I wish there were more teachers like you.

How kind of you!

I teach 9th grade English and a gifted elective (changes each quarter: forensics, bridge, creative writing, drama). Last year I was the newspaper adviser but next year I get to switch (yay!) to the drama director. I also teach an SAT Prep class to juniors to review for the Critical Reading and Writing sections.

Heh. For the longest time I couldn't understand why Warren Buffet wante the inheritence tax to go up. Then I found out he owned insurance firms that sold policies to farmers who were land-rich but liquidity poor, so when Pop died, they couldn't pay the tax - unless they had Buffet's insurance.

FTM (follow the money) bursts so many bubbles and makes clear so many odd preoccupations.

Warning: too much FTM may result in bitterness and cynicism.

re: #828 rlevitin

Actually, the type of reactor involved at Chernobyl was prone to instability at low power, and lacked any kind of containment vessel as per US models.

When the reactor blew, there was nothing keeping it from blowing into the environment in the area around the power plant. The true toll is not entirely known, but there are still thousands who have received serious doses of radiation. There is a cancer cluster in Brighton Beach Brooklyn among those who came from the Ukraine who are getting thyroid conditions/cancers because of exposure to Chernobyl.

The number who died in the initial blast was likely low, but includes many of the first responders who had no clue that the reactor blew or that massive amounts of radiation poured out.

There are vast fields where radiated equipment sits - unable to be used ever again.

And the sarcophagus isn't in good shape either, and a replacement is underway - building a second structure to cover the first.

Plenty, I'm sure, but what does that have to do with anything?
