All is mystery; but he is a slave who will not struggle to penetrate the dark veil.

Indeed, Mr. Disraeli. Shakespeare presaged your observation several hundred years earlier when Hamlet advised his best friend "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Would anyone enjoy a BDS tidbit from the pages of digg.com?

Someone submitted a Reuters article whose headline is "Housing, banking crisis piles pressure on Bush." The submitter decided to change the headline to "Bush is Burning the World to the Ground." Needless to say, it's been dugg all the way to the front page.

Is he visiting Sderot? (Probably no)

Will he visit the mosques defacing the Temple Mount? Pray at them?

From the movie masterpiece " O Lucky Man "

Composed by Alan Price of The Animals:

The Song: " O Lucky Man "

If you have a friend on whom you think
you can rely - You are a lucky man!
If you've found the reason to live on and
not to die - You are a lucky man!
Preachers and poets and scholars don't know it,
Temples and statues and steeples won't show it,
If you've got the secret just try not to blow
it - Stay a lucky man!
If you've found the meaning of the truth
in this old world- You are a lucky man!
If knowledge hangs around your neck like
pearls instead of chains - You are a lucky man!
Takers and fakers and talkers won't tell you.
Teachers and preachers will just buy and sell you.
When no one can tempt you with heaven or hell-
You'll be a lucky man!

I was down the county courthouse last week. The office was filled with six women, three of whom easily topped 300 pounds. It was painful to watch them pretending to work while actually doing nothing. After two minutes of standing, another woman, the heaviest of them all, finally waited on me. I had to grimace as she walked back and forth to attend to the paperwork. The aisle was about three feet wide but she could barely pass through it. I kept thinking about national healthcare being in the hands of people like that. From the movie masterpiece " O Lucky Man "

Composed by Alan Price of The Animals:

The Song: " O Lucky Man "

I've never understood why that Alan Price song was the theme song to that movie, when the superior "Lucky Man" by Emerson Lake and Palmer was available; it even contains the exactly appropriate lyrics, and came out 3 years before the movie. I've always scratched my head over that. It's like releasing a movie called "Purple Haze" in 1969, but hiring Herman's Hermits to do a completely different song called "Purple-Colored Haze" for the theme song.

Wasn't aware of the M-n-M connection. Is it a lyric?

Yes.

everybody only wants to discuss me/
So this must mean I'm disgusting

From his song "Without Me." Crude and vulgar as he is, he is capable of some extraordinary wordsmithing. Consider this from Lose Yourself (what caught my eye was his use of the words "Salem's Lot"):

Stay in one spot, another day of monotony/
Has gotten me to the point, I'm like a snail/
I've got to formulate a plot before I end up in jail or shot/
Success is my only motherfucking option, failure's not/
Mom, I love you, but this trailer's got to go/
I cannot grow old in Salem's lot/
So here I go is my shot.

A 21st century Allen Ginsberg, if I may make the connection. The difference being that Marshal Mathers is infinitely more lyrical than Ginsberg ever was.

Yep, it's frikkin taking over down here. And along the lines of what Mandy referenced, I know a family who has fenced their property and bought a herd of goats just to keep the kudzu from coming into their yard. It grows really, really fast. The goats can't keep up so they still have to cut/burn/mow/whatever weekly.

You know what else is weird about him? I can recall this now. He had a VERY young wife. Couldn't be more than 18. If I would ask her a question, she would look at him and he would answer for her. She came with him to every session and would just draw pictures and sit in the corner. They were very child like pictures, I mean like a 5 year old. She left one in the treatment room by accident and I kept it because there was just something very weird about the situation and I thought "one day the cops are going to ask me about this". I never heard anything and we had no evidence of any wrong doing to report to the authorities.

My first question is, "What the heck is he doing giving interviews and discussing it?" I can think of several reasons why she might be cold right now, but what kind of husband trots out speculation on his marriage at any time, but especially given what she just went through? And if they're on the outs, why is he being interviewed about her, when he wouldn't know anything right now. It sounds like he likes the attention more than he respects their privacy, which may be what she doesn't like.

The caption says the Reagan is entering a base in South Korea.
They clear the hangar deck as much as possible for entering port; they need the room for other activities to do with resupply and liberty plus they usually can't load the deck like that at sea (too rough) so they use the opportunity to straighten stuff up and get to the corners of the hangar deck.

btw there is a clear path for the port side angled launch way. Probably for a helo. I'm not sure if they could launch an aircraft sitting still.

Trying to join sunset/ view, Jerusalem, and not too many bystanders (the less the better)

I was thinking of just a narrow side "street" in the Jewish quarter...but that doesn't have a view. Same for Yemin Moshe which is pretty, but again no view.

Mt. of Olives has the view, but does not look all that shnazzy but for the Churches, etc., and Wrath doesn't do Churches.

about a big shiney bling

My point exactly.

It's become an unhealthy obsession. I think I've seen the difference even in my lifetime. 20 years ago, it would have been considered romantic for a man to propose using a ring with a smallish stone but that had, for instance, been in his family for a couple of generations. Today, he'd be laughed at. If it's not a huge bling-bling rock, well, it's just not serious, is it? It's gotten kind of sick.

It needn't be. IMHO, it shouldn't be. Frankly, I think our culture has elevated the importance of the engagement ring to a really twisted status.

You don't believe in following the advice of a company whose vested interest is in having you spend six months of your pre-tax earnings on an engagement ring?
IMHO, quality trumps all. A big expensive piece of dead glass looks like, well...a big expensive piece of dead glass.

I don't post here a lot, but I enjoy this BLOG and it's part of my daily reading. There are so many people here who really know what they are talking about (no sarcasm, really).

Massive change of subject-

I've been hearing a lot about Sharia Finance, what is it about it that is so distasteful. Is it the slippery slope and all that?

1. I'm not a huge fan of interest in general (money changers, roman law, the vig) it can be pretty abusive if not regulated. Kind of a necessary evil to make capitalism work.
2. Isn't VERY AMERICAN to take the best of other cultures and add it to our melting pot. If Sharia Finance has some things that seem to work out, why shouldn't we add it to our system? If we change it to fit in, then aren't we just as likely to affect their way of life, also? And isn't that the long term goal, to bring them into the 21st century?

It seems to me that the more interaction we have with them the quicker our systems, values, and beliefs, will be introduced and find a foothold in their society among the people where they can't be skewed through a mullah colored interpretation.

re: #72 EC Marm

I was down the county courthouse last week. The office was filled with six women, three of whom easily topped 300 pounds. It was painful to watch them pretending to work while actually doing nothing. After two minutes of standing, another woman, the heaviest of them all, finally waited on me. I had to grimace as she walked back and forth to attend to the paperwork. The aisle was about three feet wide but she could barely pass through it. I kept thinking about national healthcare being in the hands of people like that. I can hear the lecture I would be getting, "According to this chart your BMI is too high."
"But, I'm all muscle. Your chart stinks."
"Doesn't matter, lose 20 pounds before your next appointment. We can schedule you for early 2012."

Speaking as a person who works for Medicaid, let me tell you all bluntly:

You DO NOT want the state/Feds/Gov't in general handling your health care. If McCain or Obama push it, hire lawyers. Encourage your health care provider to hire lawyers, and sue the gov't into oblivion until they decide to give up the idea. I see the Part D debacle from the inside daily, and that is exactly what National Health Care would be.

It requires a certain percentage to go to Muslim charities - which seem largely designed to blow us up, or teach kids to blow us up.

It allows control by countries that do not have the US's best interests in mind. What if they decided to support only companies that refused to do business with Israel? Or refused to hire anyone who supports Israel?

Let enough money get invested this way, and see what happens if the US wants to enforce our laws on those funds. Money talks.

There are more problems, but those are the first two.

They clear the hangar deck as much as possible for entering port; they need the room for other activities to do with resupply and liberty plus they usually can't load the deck like that at sea (too rough) so they use the opportunity to straighten stuff up and get to the corners of the hangar deck.

One must also consider that a carrier at sea maintains CAP (carrier air protection) at all times which includes several planes at all times that would reduce the number of aircraft on deck at any given time as well.

re: #203 Occasional Reader

My point exactly.

It's become an unhealthy obsession. I think I've seen the difference even in my lifetime. 20 years ago, it would have been considered romantic for a man to propose using a ring with a smallish stone but that had, for instance, been in his family for a couple of generations. Today, he'd be laughed at. If it's not a huge bling-bling rock, well, it's just not serious, is it? It's gotten kind of sick.

Hubby and I got married very young. No money for bling. I have a lovely little ring with a stone you need a jeweler's eye to see and I love it. I've had friends "upgrade" their original rings with a huge rock, but to me, that's tacky. And that's what "coctail rings" are for! But if I was getting married today or if I was older at the time, I would definitely held out for a pretty substantial ring.

Nobody is better at making money than Americans. If we allow Wall Street and the American real estate market to absorb the Arabs like they did to the Japanese in the 70's and 80's and the Germans in the 90's then we'll have won the war and it'll just be a matter of convincing a few Muslim religious nuts that it's over.

I remember how everyone was worried in the 70's that the Japanese were buying up America. It didn't work out that way. I think this is the same. We need to include them. Then they have to play by our rules.

Not since Friday night. (I saw it multiple times)

306 eaglewingz08  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 3:45:23pm

Pres Bush hits two homers in two days, first his lifting of the Executive Order on drilling/exploration, and today he has overuled the EPA and told them they have no authority to regulate CO2 or greenhouse gases under the EPA, and that it would be a gross abuse of authority for them to attempt to do so. Well done Mr. Pres.

"The White House on Friday took dramatic steps to head off a massive expansion in the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to regulate greenhouse gases, which the agency had considered in response to a Supreme Court ruling this year.

The Bush administration rejected an EPA proposal to regulate greenhouse gases under the 1963 Clean Air Act, taking the unusual step of publicly releasing internal criticism of the EPA's plan.

"The onerous command-and-control regulation contemplated in the EPA staff draft would impose crippling costs on the economy in the form of a massive hidden tax, without even ensuring that the intended overall emissions reductions occur," White House press secretary Dana Perino said.

The administration released for public review and comment 85 pages of scathing critiques from five Cabinet agencies and three other offices, instead of resolving the interagency dispute internally.

The White House said it took the step in the hope that letting Congress see for itself the details of the 500-page EPA proposal would persuade it not to pass a strict regulatory scheme. Friday's action effectively ends the possibility of any regulatory steps being taken against greenhouse gases during the Bush administration.

"We're hopeful that Congress sees that that's the train wreck the president was talking about," White House spokesman Tony Fratto said.

Further, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson said he disagreed with the idea of using the Clean Air Act for greenhouse gas regulation, as suggested in his agency's own proposal, which runs to nearly 500 pages.

The Clean Air Act, Mr. Johnson said, is "an outdated law originally enacted to control regional pollutants that cause direct health effects [and] is ill-suited for the task of regulating global greenhouse gases."

"One point is clear: the potential regulation of greenhouse gases under any portion of the Clean Air Act could result in an unprecedented expansion of EPA authority that would have a profound effect on virtually every sector of the economy and touch every household in the land," Mr. Johnson said.

The EPA issued its proposed rule in response to the Supreme Court's April decision that the federal government does have the authority to regulate greenhouse gases. That decision also gave the EPA the task of deciding whether global warming posed a threat to the public health or welfare.

Former EPA official, Jason Burnett, has accused Vice President Dick Cheney's office and the White House Council on Environmental Quality of pressuring another government official to remove from congressional testimony last fall a finding that global warming is a "serious public health concern."

The Bush administration's move on Friday means that the next president will have to decide whether to give the EPA broad, climate change-related regulatory powers, or to push Congress to pass a law implementing emission controls.
John Walke, clean air director at the Natural Resources Defense Council, said he wants the president to do both.
"Those two options need not supplant one another. You could have regulations followed by more well-conceived legislation," he said. "You can craft more tailored legislation, ... but that in no way should serve as excuse for inaction."
"The Bush administration has passed the buck," Mr. Walke said.
The White House, and the letters drafted by its multiple agencies and offices, insisted that the U.S. should use a broader approach that includes spending on new clean-energy technology, broad goals for the economy as a whole, and then specific goals for certain business sectors, and an insistence that developing countries such as China and India also commit to reducing their emissions."

No, what I am suggesting is that women should place more value on the man's character and love rather than the "value" of the ring he presents as a representation of it. A ring is just that, a ring. A man's love and devotion to a woman cannot have price put upon it. It's like that Mastercard commercial that ends with "Priceless".

I think that commercial is hilarious, but it does make me wonder at whom it is aimed.

At women? We aren't the target sales audience. On average, nuts are a guy purchase and so the joke behind the commercial is based on a truth.

At men? While the idea that men really, really like nuts may be true, not one of them like them enough to not notice she's really ugly.

Bud is awful, America does alot of things well, beer though is not your strong suit.

You have to visit some of our combination restaurant and micro-breweries. They know how to get it right. I have about half a dozen within 10 miles of where I live and I haven't been disappointed yet. Actually, they are so strong, it probably is a good time for Bud to get out of the business. I've never been a big fan of the preservatives that American beermakers use. They annoy my kidneys while European beers don't seem to have the same effect.

Is that what it is? Crap. We pasteurize our milk, but throw preservatives in our beer. One of the best glasses of beer I ever had was a Michelob in Busch Gardens in FL. Fresh out of the tap, obviously no preservatives, it was nothing like what you can buy bottled or canned on the shelf. That 'splains it.

Bush is indeed all powerful. He forced millions of people to lie about their incomes to mortgage companies and live beyond their means.

He also sneaks into your car and changes all your radio preset buttons. Truly an evil genius.

I've paid off my debts, saved money, and live within my means while I'm saving up for a house down-payment. Under an Obama administration, my frugality will be appropriately punished, as my income will be transferred to those who made poor decisions.

Well they retired the last Tomcat a couple of years back. The Tomcat was a huge fighter, just about the biggest in the world, and had just one mission knock down a mass strike of soviet bombers. The F-18 has nothing like the awesome capability of the F-14, but its a lot cheaper to buy and maintain, and is a better all around fit to the less intense combat capabilities of our potential enemies.

July 14 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve tightened its mortgage rules by requiring lenders to determine a borrower's ability to repay and barring other practices that led to the collapse of the U.S. housing market.

Double reverse flip flop....

CNN exclusive: Obama on foreign policy

ZAKARIA: You've also said that the chief beneficiary of the Iraq war has been Iran, which now poses a significant strategic threat to, or challenge to, the United States in the region.

If we were to leave Iraq entirely, would that not cede the field to them and allow Iran to consolidate its gains in the region and in the country?

OBAMA: I don't think so. Look, first of all, I have never talked about leaving the field entirely. What I've said is that we would get our combat troops out of Iraq, that we would not have permanent bases in Iraq.

I've talked about maintaining a residual force there to ensure that al Qaeda does not re-form in Iraq, that we're making sure that we are providing logistical support and potential training to Iraqi forces -- so long as we're not training sectarian armies that are then fighting each other -- to protect our diplomats, to protect humanitarian efforts in the region.

So, nobody's talking about abandoning the field.

ZAKARIA: That might be a large force.

OBAMA: Well, it -- you know, I'm going to make sure that we determine, based on conditions on the ground, how we effectively carry out those limited, temporary missions.
....
ZAKARIA: But you could imagine a situation where, if the Iraqi government wanted it, 30,000 American troops are still in Iraq 10 years from now.

OBAMA: You know, I have been very careful not to put numbers on what a residual force would look like.

Waaiit a minute!? This is a homicide. I can't believe anyone could succeed in severing their own head with a chainsaw wielded by own hands. Only if the chainsaw was fixed to run hands-free (not impossible but difficult to rig) and rigidly supported. Even then I believe the first cut would kick the body/head away thus not completing the cut.

The F-14 platform was the only one built to support the Phoenix (the reason for the F-14's size). In fact, the plane was built around it and it's retirement includes the capability the Phoenix system gave the Carrier battle group. Methinks the Navy traded speed for stand-off capabilities.

The F-14 was not perfect. Its was a long range interceptor. It was underpowered, It drank gas at an astonishing rate. It required lots of maintenance, and its primary enemy no longer existed. The f-18 can do everything else very well except fire the Phoenix. I concur with the Navies decision to can the Tomcat....(PS, I was in the fleet and worked on A-7's)

re: #447 pegcity

I heard the F14 was very difficult to fly something akin to driving a muscle car compared to a F16 which would be more like a modern day Porsche.

The idea of having to adjust the flaps and rudders seems very exciting compared to pushing a joystick.

You really flew that plane instead of it flying you.

The F22 is amazing but i get the impression that it was really built to fly with no humans at all.

Nah, the fighter jocks loved it. It had beautiful flying characteristics, but anything that weighs 60,000 pounds is not going to handle as well as something that has only half the weight.

CAIR Calls New Yorker Obama Cartoon 'Inflammatory'

In a statement, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said:
"Unfortunately, the New Yorker's front cover cartoon failed to achieve its stated goal of exposing and lampooning right-wing caricatures of the Obamas. These inflammatory images and spurious associations will only serve to reinforce the racism and anti-Muslim stereotypes that the magazine says it is out to challenge."

re: #434 GeeWiz

When the Navy retired the F-14, they retired the Phoenix missle system that could engage 6 targets at a distance of 200 miles. The F-14 platform was the only one built to support the Phoenix (the reason for the F-14's size). In fact, the plane was built around it and it's retirement includes the capability the Phoenix system gave the Carrier battle group. Methinks the Navy traded speed for stand-off capabilities.

Not true, they gave up speed and stand off capability as well as loiter time when they adopted the WhoreNuts as their new fighter. The only benefit was in the maint catargory where the Tomcat was tough to maintain given its advanced avionics. The FA18 means they only have to keep parts for one plane. Aviation mag had quite a bit on it from both sides, and I tend to think we got screwed on the deal. The Navy should have invested in an updated F-14. Just my leg opinion though.

The F-14 and Phoenix missile had only on mission, to break up mass bomber attacks by the Soviets. That mission is gone. The F-18 is a much better fit for today's tactical environment than the F-14. Not only that but the Aegis missile defense system fills a large gap that was once the F-14's mission.

re: #447 pegcity

You have nailed the difference between the F-14, and the F-15 as well, compared to the F-16, the FA-18 and the F-22. The latter rely on computer controls and the prior required an experienced pilot to bring out the best of the plane. When the FA-18 was first introduced, they experienced many crashes on landings because the on-board computer fought the pilot's input on the glide-slope. Once pilots allowed the computer to land the plane, the crashes stopped. The FA-18's computer was designed to bring the plane in with a "dead stick" (pilot not in control).

Something the editors of the New Yorker missed in their drunken choose-the-cover meeting: the biggest group that believes Barack is a Muslim isn't right-wing Americans, but actual Muslims living overseas. If they believe he is "one of them", and it turns out he isn't, the sense of betrayal will be intense, and will have huge negative consequences for US/Middle East foreign policy regardless of who wins in November. The Arab street is already prone to conspiracy theories... if they think they were lied to about Obama's religion, the level of trust will fall to less than zero!

No, what I am suggesting is that women should place more value on the man's character and love rather than the "value" of the ring he presents as a representation of it. A ring is just that, a ring. A man's love and devotion to a woman cannot have price put upon it. It's like that Mastercard commercial that ends with "Priceless".

Once we have a qualified replacement, I will wholeheartedly agree. One example I know of, of military doing stupid stuff was when they replaced the F-4 with the F-16. yes the Falcon is one heck of a great plane, cheap to build, easy to maintain, and a good over all air craft, but the one thing it lacked at the time of adoption was all weather capability, something that was remedied about a year and a half after the F-4 was gone with IIRC block 25.
And yes, I know the Phantom was an abomination. all the wing angles were to compensate for other flaws.
It would have sucked if the Ruskies had marched through Fulda on a cold blustery day right after the Falcons came on line. I also remember the many crashes because of design flaws that claimed many very good pilots.

During my model building years, I built only (3) 1:32 model planes. They were the F-4, the F-14D and the F-15. I revered them all. When it comes to jet fighters, the F-14 & the F-15 are my favorites. My favorite plane of all time was the P-51D Mustang followed closely by the F-4U Corsair.

Some good planes. I have a love forthe F-8 Crusader, but only because of its nick name. FWIW, most of the stuff we had in the 50's and 60's was junk because it was designed by boomer maggots. It wasn't until Botd applied the OODA loop to design that we got planes that could save lives. The first few years were a stretch, but we got planes that could really fly.

OBAMA: You know, I have been very careful not to put numbers on what a residual force would look like

Wow, and this guy wants to be president.

Here is the deal, the loan officers and those who sold the "no need to prove income to pay back the loan , loans" bank robbers thats all.

Now think, if that need for loan funds is no longer in the market,
would it not follow there should be more money available to real borrowers who have jobs, long term jobs and 1040's to back it up.

stay tuned for facts, they just could slip out.

"The shit loans earned higher "service release fees".

crooks regulating crooks is not a good idea

It's like the 80's all over again only far less banks going under right now and no one going to jail for making the loans "yet".

SAN FRANCISCO -- A disgruntled city computer engineer has virtually commandeered San Francisco's new multimillion-dollar computer network, altering it to deny access to top administrators even as he sits in jail on $5 million bail, authorities said Monday.

Sounds like a lightning strike occurred nearby. If lightning hits a pole in your vicinity, the voltage spike can travel over electrical/phone lines and take out anything connected to those lines unless protected by devices. I learned the hard way and have since installed the necessary devices to protect my equipment. My business insurance covered the losses to the damaged equipment but couldn't replace the headaches I endured to correct the situation.
