Obama to Meet with Fatah

Mon, Jul 14, 2008 at 10:08:22 pm PDT

Barack Obama is going to meet with Fatah.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama will visit the West Bank next week as part of a swing through the Middle East, a Palestinian official said Monday, giving an important diplomatic boost to the Palestinians at a sensitive time in peace talks.

The Palestinians expressed satisfaction over the planned meeting with the presumed Democratic nominee, which comes months after Obama’s likely Republican opponent, John McCain, passed on meeting with the Palestinians during a brief visit to Israel.

Obama is scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas during his July 23 stop in Ramallah, said Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, who was in Paris for a Mediterranean summit.

“We welcome this meeting,” Erekat said. If Obama is elected, he added, “we hope he will stay the course between Israel and the Palestinians in reaching peace and a two-state solution.”

His fans in Gaza are going to be very disappointed.

Just another example of how it is that Obama just doesn't get it - or maybe how he does get it.
Either way, it's a VERY BAD idea for Obama, morally and I strongly think politically as well.

5 FinnAgain  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 10:12:37pm

Damn, didn't submit it early enough for the hat tip ;)

In any case, it will be very, very interesting to see what actually happens. Obama is very good at pandering, but this may be a pander too far. If he earns a good reception from the crowds, (who are certainly media savvy), we'll have photos that dog him from now until election day as rabid rejectionists rejoice in his presence.

If he fails, he'll simply show that he really doesn't have the experience or diplomatic chops and that he's been trading on smoke and mirrors.

Either way, this is a stupendously poor move from a tactical standpoint in terms of campaigning and a poor diplomatic move as you don't engage in trilateral negotiations when your own nation goes schizoid and plays two roles.

7 Cartman  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 10:13:28pm

And your mission, Mr. Obama, should you decide to accept it? Promise to throw Israel under the bus. Discretely, of course.

re: #3 pingjockey

Depends on who he's talking to that day. AIPAC? He'll actually take a position that's more hardline than what many Israelis or McCain himself offered.
Not-AIPAC? Well, 'undivided' was just an example of 'misspeaking'.

Bah.

10 Last Mohican  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 10:17:38pm

Why is this such a bad move for him politically?

Fatah, as the more moderate of the two most powerful terrorist groups in the region, is somehow seen as Israel's Partner in Peace.™ If Obama's trying to paint himself as the great uniter, the best hope for Israeli-Palestinian peace, why not go and pose for a few pictures with them, and pretend that he offers some potential for a breakthrough?

Fatah is NOT moderate. This is one of the biggest frauds ever perpetrated on the West. They are every bit as dedicated to the destruction of Israel as Hamas.

Huh - and from Charles' link: "During the same visit, Obama is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials. The Obama campaign declined to comment."
WTH? Obama is expected to meet with Israeli officials but the Obama campaign declined to comment?
Why doesn't Barry GET IT - the "activist" wing of the Dem party is already horribly disillusioned with Obama (as evidenced in the thread Charles put up several days ago about Kos himself telling Obama and telling the Democratic Party to "FUCK OFF" for Obama's turning his back on his pledges to the activist wing on Iraq, FISA, Public Funding, Gun Ownership and a host of other issues). But Obama must surely know that if he comes back to his base, he's gonna lose the remainder of the Dems and a helluva lot of Independents too.
Gee, wonder if Obama will take Jimmy Carter along as an "advisor" when he meets with the Pali's
(btw, he didn't say he was meeting with HAMAS, just with FATAH, even though Hamas was elected by the Pali people!)

As Charles says, Fatah is every bit as committed to the destruction of Israel as is Hamas, and no more interested in legitimate negotiation than Hamas is. And their representatives say so frequently, in Arabic. But somehow they seem to keep the genocidal rhetoric to a minimum when speaking in English, and so the West has seized upon Fatah as Israel's Partners in Peace.™ The people whose votes Obama is after seem to believe that crap. They want to see him wearing a dark suit, negotiating with foreign leaders (perhaps in front of a simulated presidential seal). So maybe it's a good political move for him.

Months ago Nobama and Clinton's chief foreign policy heads went to Syria and had talks. One wonders what was agreed to and what promises were given. I venture to guess that they told the chinless one to have his killer buddies to hold off on any attacks that could help the Republicans before the election. What they would give in return, one wonders. My guess is that after the election all hell is going to break lose. If Nobama wins than Iserial is going to have to go after Iran's nukes, what choice will they have? If McCain wins expect an terrorist attack to show Bush failed. I expect that after loosing two countries and having their butts kicked all over the place they wanted no more of Bush. With Bush on the way out though, what's to lose. If McCain wins I think they will wish for the easy going they got from Bush.

If he can spend twenty years heaping praise on Reverend Wright, and then successfully dispose of Wright under the bus overnight, he'll be able to spin this trip however he wants. All that will be left when it's over will be the videotapes of all of the world's peoples gathering in the streets, holding hands together, and celebrating the blessed arrival of the Obamessiah. It'll make good background imagery for his big acceptance speech at the football stadium.

I do think that, if he's photographed placing a wreath on Arafat's grave, he might lose some Jewish voters. But he won't do that. And I suspect he might even get away with that too.

Thank you! I have been praying since this started. I do not remember in my lifetime a worse election, and that it is occurring when we need the very best of the best.

What we have? The dregs. But McCain can do the job. And I feel that he is a friend of Israel and the Jews, at a time when Israel needs a friend that they can trust, while their government is an inexorable mess. McCain understands. Hussein? He is the enemy, and not just of the Jews. I do not consider him to be a loyal, patriotic America, and we know what his bitch of a wife thinks of our country.

John McCain is a true patriot. These photos of how he lived at the Hanoi Hilton are heartbreaking. He has the experience that Obama and Bubba never did...fighting in our military. Obama might have been too young, but Bubba was a draft dodger, picketing the US Embassy, in London..yet he became President.

re: #14 Charles

Fatah is NOT moderate. This is one of the biggest frauds ever perpetrated on the West. They are every bit as dedicated to the destruction of Israel as Hamas.

In case anyone wants to dispute that or would like to see proof ....

From the Palestine National Charter:
Article 15. The liberation of Palestine is a national obligation for the Arabs. It is their duty to repel the Zionist and imperialist invasion of the greater Arab homeland and to liquidate the Zionist presence in Palestine. The full responsibility for this belongs to the peoples and governments of the Arab nation and to the Palestinian people first and foremost. For this reason, the task of the Arab nation is to enlist all the military, human, moral and material resources at its command to play an effective part, along with the Palestinian people, in the liberation of Palestine. Moreover, it is the task of the Arab nation, particularly at the present stage of the Palestinian armed revolution, to offer the Palestinian people all possible aid, material and manpower support, and to place at their disposal all the means and opportunities that will enable them to continue to perform their role as the vanguard of their armed revolution until the liberation of their homeland* is achieved.

From the Jewish Virtual Library.

afaik; this "charter" has never been repudiated. (though countless "peace accords" were made contingent on it's removal.
* homeland defined as the British Protectorate as defined before the formation of Israel.

re: #75 Last Mohican

He seems to be losing his grip on the hypnotized Obamamaniacs, and where a month ago, I feared he would keep them under control, I see him slipping.

But yes, Jews will still vote for him. Being a liberal means never having to say you're sorry..but it also means that you are a broken record, and soon your play book will be past it's sell by date. I just hope that the wake up call will not be too late!

/I ain't no steeenkin' liberal!

100 Shifra  Mon, Jul 14, 2008 11:16:52pm

Obama talking with Fatah is not so bad. It may convince more American Jews to vote Republican for a change. - Change is good right?

OBAMA / FATAH
both have 5 letters

Yes. You know how much we all think of you, and you might want to request a deletion. I think it would be well-received.

Whatever committee came up with the Barackidential Seal. Like all fascists, they're awfully good at this sort of thing.

re: #10 Last Mohican

Why is this such a bad move for him politically?

Fatah, as the more moderate of the two most powerful terrorist groups in the region, is somehow seen as Israel's Partner in Peace.™ If Obama's trying to paint himself as the great uniter, the best hope for Israeli-Palestinian peace, why not go and pose for a few pictures with them, and pretend that he offers some potential for a breakthrough?

No breakthrough. The Palestinians don't want peace. They want
Irsael.......gone, period. They speak of peace .....but just another lie.

105 yochanan  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 4:04:21am

Partisan differences are more significant on the question of what the U.S. should do if Iran attacks Israel. By a 70% to 12% margin, Republicans say the U.S. should respond militarily if Israel is attacked. Forty-five percent (45%) of Democrats oppose a military response while 30% support it. Unaffiliated voters are evenly divided.

re: #1 realwest

Just another example of how it is that Obama just doesn't get it - or maybe how he does get it.
Either way, it's a VERY BAD idea for Obama, morally and I strongly think politically as well.

No problem. Jews will vote for Obama no matter what. They "traditionally" vote for Democrats. Brain is not involved.

107 eaglewingz08  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 5:30:59am

Funny from Scappleface:

"While the Bush administration has tried to get allies to unite in applying pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear program, Sen. Obama said he would bring change to American foreign policy by trying to get U.S. allies to unite in applying pressure on Iran to halt its nuclear program.

“It’s a lot different than the Bush approach,” he said, “because in my strategy, there is no Bush.”

I'm sure many of you are already familiar with (iranian exile) Amir Taheri. And here is his column from today that deals with obama's latest position on Iraq.

That's as succinct and accurate a description of the reason the ME, Europe and the Libs hate Bush as I've ever come across. Nice one jcobble :)

Jews will vote for Obama no matter what. They "traditionally" vote for Democrats.

Not 100%, obviously. The more religious, the more politically conservative.

112 DistantThunder  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:30:49am

Maybe Obama can set up some consulting business for William Ayers and his terrorist wife with the Palis.

William Ayers + Bernadine Dohrn Terror Consulting Services

They can donate a portion of the proceeds to Obama's campaign.

113 DistantThunder  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:38:02am

My daughter is installing security systems this summer in south Boston. She called us at dusk yesterday to say that she had locked her keys in her car and was waiting for another tech to bring her the spares. She was in a very bad neighborhood. She had just finished an installation where people were passed out on the floor in the house, and it look like lots of stolen items stacked up everywhere.

So we stayed on the phone with her for 10 minutes until her keys arrived.

She said that two of the people were playing backgammon, when the guy exclaimed: "I was behind the wall for 6 years, I think I know how to play the game."

114 FrogMarch  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:38:59am

Wow - Obama is the first black Bill Clinton.

115 DistantThunder  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:39:40am

Our daughter says that they get lots of security installation orders at the Projects and the salesmen love it because everyone is home.

116 FrogMarch  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:43:17am

If Arafat were still alive- Obama would be glad-handing him too - just like Clinton and Carter did. (to what end?) It's just what the democrat eternal victim mongers do.

117 looking closely  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:44:47am

Hope and change!

How ironic that the Palestinians are trying to meddle in an American election, when they themselves have no political process worth talking about.

If the Palestinians would take the same kind of interest in THEIR OWN GOV'T that they do in America's they'd actually have a State right now.

118 FrogMarch  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:45:51am

Someone from the Iranian Revolutionary Army's Public Affairs Division, if they're not photoshopping. Or , if they're busy, any AP or AFP stringer.

Maybe he will bring each of his daughters a keffiyeh as a souvenir.

121 quickjustice  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 7:00:06am

The REAL reason for this meeting: Obama's trying to acquire threads matching those cool outfits depicted on the fashion page of the New Yorker magazine for himself and Michelle! And let's face it! Fatah has virtually cornered the market in Revolutionary Chic!

Utterly Detestable.

One word comes to mind from eight years ago when George W. was in Barak N.M.N (No Middle Name) Obama's position running for president.
"Gravitas"

Obama completely lacks it.
Please can we revoke his passport and citizenship and proclaim him
persona-non-grata. (in govspeak PING Him)
I'm sure Hamas will grant him a position as undersecretary of something.

ZerObama!

lmao, those cartoons are great in general, but that's one of the best.

126 Sir Napsalot  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 7:47:11am

Obama meeting Fatah (opposition party?) is equivalent to going to Columbia and meet with FARC. On every scale, it is just plain wrong.

But for someone inspired to become Jimmah II, it is inevitable (and so natural) for him to 'evolve' into.

127 chuba  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 7:47:45am

None of this means a fecking thing. Olmert and his ilk are still damned idiots, and Fatah, Hamas, and pretty much the rest of the Palestinians still want to see Israel destroyed. A vist from the Obamination changes nothing.

128 Jetziger  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 8:08:22am

Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing.

129 J. Lichty  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 8:13:41am

Will he lay a wreath at Arafat's (may his name be ereased) tomb like his hero Jimmy the Christ?

130 Reluctant Democrat  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 8:14:54am

What a gift to McCain--all those pictures of Palestinians cheering Obama on! He ought to lose a good five points in the polls for this one.

How long will it take him to regret this?

132 tbrowne34  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 8:59:31am

I don't see Obama's let's love them and hold hands kumbaya as an effective panacea to the cauldron known as the middle east. As someone who has left Islam, Obama is considered an apostate to the lunatic fringe(there seems to be a very large fringe element) Islamic community and someone who could be put to death as a result of his conversion to Christianity according to the "religion of peace" He will only antagonize the hardliners further.

133 opinionated  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 8:59:56am

To save the cost of postage, he should stop off at the State Dept and Rice can give him the aid check that he can deliver personally.

134 transient  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 9:55:16am

If he does meet with Fatah, I am hopeful that at least there will be some good video footage the Republicans can use during the campaign.

I am worried about the election. Many things favor the Dems (faltering economy, to name only one). I hope that Obama will screw things up. It looks like he's on track, but things that look like major faux pas to LGF readers are barely speed bumps to many other voters.

I am curious to see how much of the Jewish-American vote Obama will get. I think it will still be overwhelmingly in favor of the Dems, but he will get less than, say, Clinton in '92. My question is, how much less, and will it make a difference?

135 rlevitin  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 6:47:56pm

Did anybody else notice how well off these Gazans look? I thought they were all poverty stricken, homeless folks with no electricity, computers, or anything of the sort!
