I just posted this on the previous thread since I didn't think Charles would be putting up an overnight thread so soon, but I think it's far more apporpriate to post here:

I was distracted by Santiago's pole-dancing 'goddess of the Subway', Monserrat Morilles.

Believe it or not, I was able to get my gringo hands on something like that on the subway (tres rojo diamantes) when I was in Chile a few years ago......

Knowledge is power.

— Francis Bacon

I wish knowledge were power. Unfortunately, a gun is more powerful than knowledge. A weapon in the service of ignorance is more powerful than knowledge. The world is now at a tipping point, and it could go either way. It depends on who owns the best weapons, the knowledgeable or the ignorant.

Just to boast . .

I'm in my last year of school in Australia and I used this LGF post in an English assignment.
My teacher liked the post despite being a liberal who thinks that Americans are too "conservative" to vote for Hillary because she is a woman or vote for Obama because he is black.
Apart from his distorted political opinions, he is actually quite nice (he gave us chocolates on the last day of semester).

alright.... my pet peeve.... I contend that knowledge, which can be attained by reading, or studying, or talking..... is nothing more than knowledge. It is what you do with knowledge that (to me) truly defines power. So, I would say that "learning" (which emanates from within) leads to power. Learning, about (among other things) what to do with knowledge... leads to an understanding of power. Once one understands power, he/she can wield it as needed.

Knowledge is, by definition, external.

Learning is completely internal.

Power, is the internal wielding the external to advantage.

(getting off of soapbox now.)

... Why, if ’tis dancing you would be, 15
There’s brisker pipes than poetry.
Say, for what were hop-yards meant,
Or why was Burton built on Trent?
Oh many a peer of England brews
Livelier liquor than the Muse, 20
And malt does more than Milton can
To justify God’s ways to man.
Ale, man, ale’s the stuff to drink
For fellows whom it hurts to think:
Look into the pewter pot 25
To see the world as the world’s not.
And faith, ’tis pleasant till ’tis past:
The mischief is that ’twill not last.
Oh I have been to Ludlow fair
And left my necktie God knows where, 30
And carried half way home, or near,
Pints and quarts of Ludlow beer:
Then the world seemed none so bad,
And I myself a sterling lad;
And down in lovely muck I’ve lain, 35
Happy till I woke again.
Then I saw the morning sky:
Heigho, the tale was all a lie;
The world, it was the old world yet,
I was I, my things were wet, 40
And nothing now remained to do
But begin the game anew. ...

I have drawn this conclusion from observation of people. In my mind, it ain't at all about me (per se).... it is just how things are... how people are..... how life is.

I have watched stupid people trying to be powerful because they think they "know" more than someone else. And, I think (without fail) those people who attempt to show power invariably fall short....

whether they achieve power or not.... depending on circumstance... in the purest sense, they fall short....

I wrote back that there is nowhere in the bible that said people of different races can't mix and I know that from a personal experience because my grandparents were a bi-racial couple. I then told him that there is evidence to is claim but their is to mine since the bible speaks against homosexuality as a wrong behavior and that hundreds of years of suffering over ones skin color is not in the same league as someones lifestyle choice. Aw man. Sorry to hear it... but if she can't find time for such a fine person as yourself, no matter what is going on in her life... maybe she wasn't the right person anyway.

But from my own experience, I know that it's a deep hurt to have someone break up with you and nothing I can say will help.

But that won't stop me from trying:

You should have been -and I believe would have been- the person to help her through whatever. If she didn't see that... she wasn't looking very hard. Find someone that deserves you.

How old is your brain?

Procedure of Flash Fabrica Game:

1. Touch 'start'
2. Wait for 3, 2, 1.
3. Memorize the number's position on the screen, then click each circle from the smallest number to the biggest number.
4. At the end of game, the computer will tell you how old your brain.....

Good luck !

145 Ledger1  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 12:17:57am

I was just thinking about Kragar's post on Ahmadinejad’s jet airplane.

From I can see it’s a large Airbus A340-200 [1] given to him by his friend Hugo Chaves [2] that can carry 41,000 gallons of jet fuel [3].

What if Crazy Boy Ahmadinejad decides he doesn’t like the idea of not being able to wipe Israel off of the map and orders his pilot to crash his jet fuel filled airplane into the nearest tall building after take-off (he finally snapped and he saw the 12th Imam).

Do we really want that type of Loose Nut and his Fuel Filled Jet in our populated cities?

I don’t think so.

Worse, what if he somehow concealed a gun style nuke in his large aircraft and an announced that if he did not get to push Israel in the sea he would just detonate the nuke at the airport?

That's not so good.

I can hear crazed dinnerjacket laughing, “You stupid infidels thought I needed a missile to deliver a nuke to your capitalistic New York City.”

I know it will probably not happen but I hope there are some contingency plans if Crazy Boy Dinnerjacket goes bonkers when he doesn’t get his way

1. During his July 2007 visit to Tehran, Chavez presented Ahmadinejad with an Airbus A340-200 as a sign of friendship [14] at a time when many Western countries looked askance at exporting modern aircraft to the Islamic Republic for fear that a plane might be cannibalized for spare parts in support of Iran's aging military fleet. See, AEI Iran’s Global Ambitions, 10% down page

2 the purchase of the "Aircraft of Allah" Airbus jet by the Islamic Republic for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei from the Sultan of Brunei and conversion of an Islamic ruler's aircraft to an even more Islamic configuration, required for Iranian use, was certainly motivated less by the pomp and prestige factor than by the fear of flying in the decrepit aircraft owned by Iran

3 One version of this type was ordered by the Sultan of Brunei requesting for a non-stop range of 8,000 nautical miles (14820 km). This A340-8000 had an increased fuel capacity, a MTOW of 275 tonnes similar to the A340-300, Max. fuel capacity 155,040 L 40,957 gallons

by Czeslaw Milosz

Love

Love means to learn to look at yourself
The way one looks at distant things
For you are only one thing among many.
And whoever sees that way heals his heart,
Without knowing it, from various ills
A bird and a tree say to him: Friend.
Then he wants to use himself and things
So that they stand in the glow of ripeness.
It doesnt matter whether he knows what he serves:
Who serves best doesnt always understand.

This is the funnist thing I've read in a while -- the entire city government of San Francisco has been permanently hacked by a city-employed computer nerd who refuses to give up the password and who now sits in jail because of it:

S.F. officials locked out of computer network

A disgruntled city computer engineer has virtually commandeered San Francisco's new multimillion-dollar computer network, altering it to deny access to top administrators even as he sits in jail on $5 million bail, authorities said Monday.

Terry Childs, a 43-year-old computer network administrator who lives in Pittsburg, has been charged with four counts of computer tampering and is scheduled to be arraigned today.

Prosecutors say Childs, who works in the Department of Technology at a base salary of just over $126,000, tampered with the city's new FiberWAN (Wide Area Network), where records such as officials' e-mails, city payroll files, confidential law enforcement documents and jail inmates' bookings are stored.

Childs created a password that granted him exclusive access to the system, authorities said. He initially gave pass codes to police, but they didn't work. When pressed, Childs refused to divulge the real code even when threatened with arrest, they said.

He was taken into custody Sunday. City officials said late Monday that they had made some headway into cracking his pass codes and regaining access to the system.

Childs has worked for the city for about five years. One official with knowledge of the case said he had been disciplined on the job in recent months for poor performance and that his supervisors had tried to fire him.

"They weren't able to do it - this was kind of his insurance policy," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the attempted firing was a personnel matter.

Authorities say Childs began tampering with the computer system June 20. The damage is still being assessed, but authorities say undoing his denial of access to other system administrators could cost millions of dollars.

Officials also said they feared that although Childs is in jail, he may have enabled a third party to access the system by telephone or other electronic device and order the destruction of hundreds of thousands of sensitive documents.

So many layers of possible emotional responses! My first reaction is, "Couldn't happen to a more deserving city," however.

So many layers of possible emotional responses! My first reaction is, "Couldn't happen to a more deserving city," however.

So true, I want to laugh, but there are people who are innocent in all this who will be hurt or at least seriously effected by his actions. I have to admit, also, that it's fascinating- it sounds like something out of a movie!

Sorry, for stuff like this country is just a little to whiny.

/personal prefrence only.

i think what you *really* need is some Tonio K:
(sorry, i couldn't find an audio %-)

H-A-T-R-E-D
(Tonio K.)

now i know it's not unusual
it's nothing so unique
there's probably hundreds of wonderful love affairs
that go bad in this town every week
but all of them others
them sad-hearted lovers
could cry in their beer, what the hey
it didn't concern me
was none of my business
i never had nothin' to say
but suddenly darlin'
the table has turned
you have left me for somebody new
and now it's hard to express
the resentment i feel
for the years that i've wasted on you

but let me put this another way · ok?

i'm full of h-a-t-r-e-d
i'm bitter and malign
you've got me
p-i-s-s-e-d off
i'm angry most of the time
why don't you
g-o t-o h-e-double"l"
you tramp
you philandering bitch
i'm going to
k-i-l-l one of us baby
give me time and i'll decide on which

and i know i'm acting immature
i'm acting like a child
i should display some self-control
instead of going wild like this
and i do wish i could accept all this
as simply "life" which includes pain
and act upon the actual fact
that nobody's to blame
yes i wish i was as mellow
as for instance jackson browne
but "fountain of sorrow" my ass
@#$%¢&-(*&)$# [if you want to know what this means, buy the cd]
i hope you wind up in the ground

i'm so full of h-a-t-r-e-d
i'm bitter and malign
you've got me
p-i-s-s-e-d off
i'm angry most of the time
why don't you
g-o t-o h-e-double"l"
you tramp
you philandering bitch
i'm going to
k-i-l-l one of us baby
when i'm sober i'll decide on which
(but then again, maybe with the proper counseling, we can work this out)

How about this one {Blue}...(something I wrote a long time ago hopefully it isn't bad writing. )

I heard a dog speak your name tonight,
as he lay baying at the moon.
I heard a whipporwill coo for your voice,
as she glided across the frozen lake
among the trees in the forest of my soul.
I sit in the cold of the evening staring at the
harshness of the moonlight.
Watching it sparkle along the ripples of water.
Like diamonds thrown across a mirror.
Silently hoping you still think of me.
I who have flocked hundreds to thousands of sheep,
never missing one, across the hills in the valley of my soul

I feel the void of emptiness.
All your promises have long since run dry.
The ones you had spoken with your beautiful mouth,
still echo with clarity in my heart.
You have taken away my East!
I see no more sunrises, they are gone for me.
You have taken away my West!
There will be no more sunsets to see.
The beauty of the sun no longer shines for me
but only in your face.
You have taken away the North and South from me!
All my direction is gone.
But most of all, of all that was taken----
You have taken away my heart from me.
For within you it resides.

Zombie, there were REASONS for a priesthood, when no one else could read!

There is reason and good in a computer priesthood, when few know the CPU.
(read "Down With the Computer Priesthood" by T. Nelson)

And there is a REASON not to let computer nerds like HIM have unfettered access to the system during installation... there is a good reason that San Fran knuckle-head admins SHOULD HAVE hired a good computer security firm to blind-oversee this $5,000,000 Disgruntled Employee of the Year!

Quite a few of us understand, Suzette, but let me share a small story...

I draw.
Professionally, for tissue/dissection studies, for portraiture, for caricature...

And I had a drawing that no one saw, for 11 years... done totally from imagination, I thought his face bloated, distorted, misshapen, malformed, UGLY...

Then one day a friend chanced to see it before I could hide it again, and she exclaimed: "Oh! What compassionate eyes!"

/I was moved to tears, suddenly, inexplicably...
and yet I say, 'We understand much in your writing, Suzette...'

There he strode, Canuck of Blue
the waisted sash, the wasted eyes,
strong of breath and short it, too
"Wantest thou with that, some fries?"

The beard, the voice, the shotgun there
his booted feet did carry
Promising fierce unknown adventure
if only you would tarry...

But Moonbats in numbers vast
did bash and squeal in blinding fear
"Don't worry," said the Blue Canuck
"...for I shall save you, Dear!"

278 Salamantis  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 2:23:31am

To My Ex-Wife

Upon futher reflection
I've discovered how amazingly gone you are.
By means of your conspicuous absence
You have become the vastest void in my empty universe.
I am shorn of security
Bereft of reference.
Though (and this is how I lost you)
When here, you blended seamlessly beneath my arm
As solid as the firmament, and as taken for granted
Now my heart cries out inconsolably
To abrupt dread lonely nothingness.

Slamdance

Beast Machine was cranking at the Wild Child.
Bammers, bouncing like a broke rack, were
Careeening off each other's bumpers.
A lone atom hung back from the random plasma
Wanting to fill the hurly-burly spaces
Release to chaos, but instead
Sitting as the singer belted incoherencies.
Was it too soon? He still limped, and
Avoided bumping his left shoulder, though the
Doctor said it was okay. He was
Still tender, stiff and sore, felt frangible
And missed his sling.
He still avoided others' eyes, too
And had nightmares about windshields
Warm dark wetness underbrow, and snapping.
The stitches were out now
And the scars didn't look too bad, but
He felt unhealed yet.
His divorce had shattered him
More deeply than the accident.
How horribly people could hurt one another!
But he knew that an unused arm
Would wither, and a heart also.
Swallowing his pain and fear, he forced the
Beginnings of a smile, and after a long absence
Once again entered the Dance.

So sorry for your pain, the next few days and maybe weeks will be hard. Then you will rediscover you and start again. Different schedules don't always mean relationship failure. It sounds more like the "It's not you, it"s me" line.

That, dear Suzette, is poetry.

re: #293 Suzette

I think its worth a try.

I always enjoyed writing but was always dejected upon receiving my English marks. In 12th grade, our teacher encouraged all of us to enter an essay contest in the local paper, but really nagged me about it. At our graduation we had a surprise speaker. The editor of the newspaper came to award the first prize. Shocked doesn't even begin to convey my reaction when my name was called to the podium. Later I questioned my teacher as too why she nagged me so much if my grades were never A+. Her response, "I knew that if you were pushed you would achieve to a higher level. Though your writing was many times of an A+ standard I only gave you an A in order to keep pushing you. I see it paid off.''

I haven't tried publishing anything since then but we ought to try!

English was my favorite subject. One year I got the hardest English teacher and was looking forward to her class. She was not a good teacher at all. I raised my hand to ask a question and I left my hand up for at least 10 minutes....she never noticed me. She tended to teach the popular students and the bad students. All the others inbetween she cared nothing about . I lost much respect for this teacher who actually only taught 1/4 of her class.

AHA! Parents do the dumbest things sometimes.

I have 2 cousins - one a year older and one a year younger - that my parents put me up against. Every report card I'd hear, "C1 & C2 got all A's". Meanwhile, on the other side of the neighborhood C1 & C2 were getting the same BS from their parents.

Years later my mother lamented, "I don't understand why you girls aren't CLOSE."

Obvioulsy we need stricter government regulations requiring bank customers to read signs.

I can't believe our government is considering bailing out adults who are more ignorant than I was as a prepubescent boy. If she didn't read the huge signs all over the office telling her nothing over $100,000 was guaranteed she should lose her $92 k. Our Government printing billions of dollars to bail these idiots out is going to make the mere thousands I've saved through hard work and scrimping worthless. Bailing out default mortgages is a foolish wealth transfer (theft).
What makes this bailout even more despicable is that it's not a transfer of wealth from the rich to poor. It's a transfer of wealth from the responsible to the irresponsible. I happen to be poor but responsible so I greatly resent my money being taken and then given to people who earn more than me but have spent their income foolishly.

I'm not going to just close it down with no warning, in any case.

Maybe the best solution is to host the lounge at one of our sites similar to the way BabbaZee still hosts FallbackLGF. I've got several unused chatrooms that could be used for a lizard lounge.

Sports Nerd Corner:

Brett Favre speaks out about his wanting to play.

Favre to Fox News: Packers should let me play elsewhere

MILWAUKEE -- Brett Favre finally is speaking for himself: He wants to play but doesn't feel welcome in Green Bay, so he's asking to be released.

The quarterback's first substantial comments on his latest retirement decision reversal come in an interview with Fox News on "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren."

"OK, you guys have a different path, fine," Favre said, recalling a June 20 conversation with Packers coach Mike McCarthy. "What does that mean for me? So that means either you give me my helmet, welcome back, or release me, or attempt to trade me. We all know that's a possibility, but way-out-there possibility.

"And he says, 'Well, playing here is not an option, but we can't envision you playing with another team, you know, either.' And I thought, so basically, I'm not playing for anyone if I choose to come back."

According to Van Susteren, who spoke to the AP by telephone Monday afternoon, Favre said he was "never fully committed" to retiring and felt pressured by the Packers to make a decision, a notion Packers general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy tried to dispel in an interview with the AP on Saturday.

Hey Brett, several points:

1. You signed a long term contract with the Packers several years ago and accepted the up front money as part of the deal, so you are bound by the terms and conditions. One of those conditions is that the Packers own your rights for the life of the contract to do with as they see fit.

2. You then decided to retire after this past season.

3. You then decided to do this "should I stay or should I go" routine, including working out an arrangement with the Packers in March to come back

4. You then changed your mind again 48 hours before the Packers were going to announce that.

4. Now you changed you mind yet again, want to come back and go running to the media and whining whe you are met with less than open arms.

Grow up and try to show some class.

There Was a Massive Student Rally in Tehran Last Week
Brand new footage from the July 8th student protests in Tehran this year--

Thousands of Iranian students marched in Tehran last week on the anniversary of the 1999 student protests (Also known as 18th of Tir and Kuye Daneshgah Disaster). The 1999 protests were the "worst", most widespread and violent public protests in Iran, since the early years of the Iranian Revolution.

This year the students rallied and smashed through the school gates in Tehran. This story was ignored by the mainstream media but Iranian students released video from the protest on YouTube

These protests happen regularly, but are studiously ignored by the Western media. The revolution will be YouTubed.

The slow-motion massacre has been ongoing for 30 years. Hundreds of thousands of Iranians have been murdered by the regime. What the Iranian people need is the right kind of support from the West. Money, technology & training in how to overthrow a dictatorship. And when the time comes a few thousand well placed JDAMS on the IIRG, Basij & leading mullahs heads.

Regime change by students in Iran is historically a shaky premise.

The "you" in "careful what you wish for" was not *you*, but Iranians.

The Shah was incredibly unpopular on the "street", and also repressive, although without the religious overtones.

The Iranian students are back, in a new generation, swinging the pendulum wildly between extremes...that does not support the formation of representative democracy.

Point made by you and Kenneth that this is not a favorite subject of the media.

Unfortunately, right beside their Marxist-lite core beliefs, "the media" are profit-driven. And the American public on the whole prefers reports on Britney's crotch over news of the world, based on ratings and ad revenues.

The situation in 1978 was different than today. The Shah was pro-Western, but he ran a repressive dictatorship. Students protested his regime from a variety of political positions. Some were pro-democracy, some were Communists & some were Islamists. Together they overthrew the Shah, and then secretly the Islamists consolidated control of the country by killing opponents & former allies.

Today the Islamists are all in the regime. The Communists have no foreign support. The pro-democracy activists are the largest and best organized of the anti-regime groups. But they are still not organized enough to pull off a coup yet. The regime has done it's homework and will stop at nothing to keep the people oppressed.

Ed at Hot Air notes that the Obama campaign has started scrubbing his site of any and all criticism of the surge, and finally notes that the surge has worked.

Ummm... you might try and scrub as hard as you want, but the Congressional Record is a different story. Obama opposed the surge. He said it wouldn't matter how many troops were sent, that it would never work.

She had just finished an installation where people were passed out on the floor in the house, and it look like lots of stolen items stacked up everywhere.

So we stayed on the phone with her for 10 minutes until her keys arrived.

She said that two of the people were playing backgammon, when the guy exclaimed: "I was behind the wall for 6 years, I think I know how to play the game."

What will the pro-democracy groups do to counter the main advantage of the Islamists: the ignorant masses?

In 1979, all the Iranians I knew were college students and their younger siblings. It seemed to me at the time that they were all the brightest and/or richest. All of my friends gained political asylum in the US; one 18 year-old was specifically named on a political enemies list because his uncle had moved the family's extensive wealth out of Iran as the Shah's troubles increased.

I can't believe that nearly thirty years of Islamist rule hasn't damaged the "brain trust" (searching for a term here). How will any movement break the Islamist hold on the masses that is so prevalent in so many other countries?

Good question. Lot's of Iranian ex-pats travel to Iran, unlike the old Communist states. Some "Iranian experts" argue that increasing the economic pressure on Iran will undermine the limited popular support the regime has while weakening the regime's ability to rule. Interesting point. However, I am more concerned about the "Islamist" flavor of the regime than the regime itself. Wishing for a dictatorship/caliphate appears to be inherent to militant Islam. Steeping the populace in militant Islam for thirty years must have had some effect, especially on the people who have known nothing else. Although Iran's experience with this system is not as long and perhaps not as pervasive as the former Soviet Union's system, look at how folks in Russia long for the "good old days" of Joe Stalin, or at least Khruschev.

I sent my dad an e-mail with a link to How To Speak Democrat recently. He thought it was great, but then he looked at the Democrats version; How To Speak Republican and he was absolutely infuriated.

He kept saying that the way they portray the woman (liberal) is so obnoxious and they make them so emotional and outraged... as opposed to Senator McCotter, who did it all lecture style.

I personally found the comparison quite fascinating, just in terms of worldview and all. The two videos contrast quite nicely in the way that they reveal how each side thinks of the other.

I have read that the Iranian regime has succeeded in destroying religious fervor in the people. They have had an Islamic Republic for 30 years and all they have seen is oppression, corruption, poverty & ruin. The standard of living has fallen, crime, drugs & prostitution is rampant, and the regime brutality is far worse than anything the Shah inflicted. If this is what an Islamic Republic brings, they want none of it.

re: #474 jorline Hey jorline - I don't bother looking anymore; too many friends who haven't been banned just don't post anymore. And that, combined with nobody saying anything new, makes those posts uninteresting to me.
Indeed, I think a lot of folks (NOT CHARLES) have "creationists" who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible and therefore also likely to believe in ID, confused with those of us who believe in God and - in my case - Jesus Christ mixed up. I don't see how anyone can be a person of faith and not believe that God created the spark that started the evolutionary tree going; so to that extent, I think all people of faith are "creationists".
Most of us don't believe that the earth was formed only 6-10 K years ago, but belief that a supreme being (for me, again, God) created everything with that spark seems to create confusion among commenters out here. I've seen far too much bloodshed between LGF'ers of otherwise good repute over the notion of someone's religion. As I've said before, I don't want RELIGION -ANY RELIGION taught in Science classes or anything other than Philosophy classes at any Public or Taxpayer assisted schools. And I'm not so sure it religion should be taught anywhere below college level - I know if I were fortunate enough to have children, I wouldn't want them "taught" religion at public schools!
But as I said, I'm afraid that the mix up between creationists as IDer's and creationists who are not IDer's but do believe in a Supreme Being has caused some awfully terrible comments to be made, and unfortunately some of the "mix all creationists with IDer's" comments tend to stay up, far, far longer than I would tolerate if I were Charles.
But as we all know, it is Charles' blog, and he can say or permit or forbid anything to be said out here that he wants to; that is absolutely his right.
But I don't troll ID threads to look for blood in the water.

Yeah. I don't know if I shared this, but the doctor thinks I may have developed an allergy to wheat or gluten. So I'm trying to go wheat free (and to some extent gluten free), and it seems to be helping. Of course, not having real pasta SUCKS big time, but the rice pasta isn't completely terrible, and I made my famous banana-chococate-chip muffins last night with gluten-free flour and they still seem pretty good. These people think that War is an absolute evil, and that there is absolutely no appropriate time for it. They would rather roll over and die than see themselves somehow responsible for the side-effects of war. They do not understand the concept of war being the lesser of two evils, because to them war is always the more evil.

They firmly believe that EVERY conflict arises from a misunderstanding or somehow their own greed and thoughtlessness caused it, and they are at fault.

Good morning to you! It's funny, but while I do know that a surprising number of Russians miss the "Good old days" of the USSR, I think what they really miss is the fact that the USSR used to be a true POWER PLAYER on the international scene. And, frankly, were it not for it's oil, and Putin's (who does indeed still control Russia) baser instincts as former head of the KGF - always looking to start up trouble for the USA anywhere he can, not many folks would pay Russia very much attention. Militarily it's second rate, at best and it's relations with it's former members of the USSR are not exactly pleasant in all respects.
So I think a lot of Russians just miss the day when they were one of only two real superpowers more than they miss communism.

This is standard Soviet doctrine as well. In addition to not letting their soldiers, sailors, and airmen not know all the capabilities of their weapons, they have fixed battle plans, and the lower level officiers aren't allowed to deviate. If the US or Israel does the unexpected, they can't react, especially when their communications are cut or jammed.

So while the Iranians are expecting a massed attack on their nuclear sites, they'll get something else, and be completely confused.

In the First Gulf War, the US talked about all kinds of attacks. Then did something different. I had predicted we'd use cruise missiles first; we did.
And we talked up an invasion, while going around in the desert.

I hope the plans Israel and the US are making to take out Iran's nuclear capability are similar. Make a big war game with massed attack, and then do something else while the Iranians are all set up to repulse what they think the Israelis will do.

Frankly, his statements on war are all about losing and quitting and redeploying, not about victory, security, and protection of US strategic and tactical interests around the world.

Planning to Ignore the Facts
By Rich Lowry

At some point, Democrats decided that facts didn’t matter anymore in Iraq. And they nominated just the man to reflect the party’s new anti-factual consensus on the war, a Barack Obama who has fixedly ignored changing conditions on the ground.

It’s gotten harder as the success of the surge has become undeniable, but — despite some wobbles — Obama is sticking to his plan for a 16-month timeline for withdrawal from Iraq. He musters dishonesty, evasion and straw-grasping to try to create a patina of respectability around a scandalously unserious position.

rejecting an established religion, different from their own, led to the founding of America

The freedom to practice as each saw fit. That many early colonists fled from persecution, as well as economic reasons. And that many of the ideas coming out in that period of time where rooted in the new religious expressions. You can't get around words such as "divine providence" in the founding documents. What drove the founders and the sources of their ideas need to be taught, in a factual way.

Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday will outline his strategy for dealing with the biggest threats facing the United States, which he says requires bringing the war in Iraq to an end, his campaign said.
Sen. Barack Obama will deliver a policy address on Iraq and national security.
...
"This war distracts us from every threat that we face and so many opportunities we could seize. This war diminishes our security, our standing in the world, our military, our economy, and the resources that we need to confront the challenges of the 21st century," Obama will say, according to excerpts of his prepared remarks.

What planet is this guy living on where people think his words actually make sense?

Bernanke is worried about inflation.

Inflation worries predominate at the Fed

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The potential for runaway price hikes is the top concern of Federal Reserve policymakers, according to testimony by Fed chairman Ben Bernanke and the accompanying report on the economic outlook of his colleagues on the central bank released Tuesday.

FOMC members were more uncomfortable about the inflation outlook in June than they had been at any point in the year, according to the Fed's monetary report to Congress.

The Fed is worried that high oil prices, combined with the weak dollar, will increase business costs and prices. At the same time, it could make workers demand higher compensation because of the more expensive cost of living.

As a result, most Fed members viewed the possibility that inflation could come in higher than expected in coming months.

"In light of the increase in upside inflation risks, we must be particularly alert to any indications, such as an erosion of longer-term inflation expectations, that the inflationary impulse from commodity prices are becoming embedded in the domestic wage-and price-setting process," Bernanke said in testimony prepared for the Senate Banking Committee.

This is genuine Fed-speak gibberish that means they are more worried now about inflation heating up than they are about the economy tanking. Therefore, I look at least for Open market Operations to contract the money supply and a possible .25% bump to interest rates down the road. That would also appreciate the dollar relative to other currencies.

Basically, Bernanke is telling Europe to go pound sand and grow themselves out of their own economic problems, that he is going to worry about the U.S. economy first and the global economy later.

563 Kenneth  Tue, Jul 15, 2008 7:51:13am

More:

The Iraqis most enthusiastic about Obama’s plan surely are al-Qaeda members, Sadrists, Iranian agents and sectarian killers of every stripe. The prospect of an American president suddenly letting up on them has to be the best cause for hope they’ve had in months. Obama’s withdrawal would immediately embolden every malign actor in Iraq, and increase their sway in Iraqi politics.

In his oped, Obama sticks to the badly dated contention that Iraqis “have not reached the political accommodation that was the stated purpose of the surge.” In fact, roughly 15 of 18 political benchmarks have been met by the Iraqis — progress Obama threatens to reverse.

re: #530 realwest

I'm a bit ambivalent on the subject of teaching religion in taxpayer-funded schools. Certainly religion does not belong in science class. (I went to Catholic schools, and we kept the two separate.) But basing the prohibition on the imaginary Constitutional requirement of total, absolute separation of church and state is highly problematic.

Besides, I consider the secular humanism that has been force-fed to public school students for generations now to be a godless faith system. So I think a religion has been taught in the schools for many decades now - it's just one that pretends NOT to be a religion, so that people will sit quietly and allow the indoctrination.

We lost a lot when local schools stopped being largely under the control of those whose kids are being educated.

I'm pressed for time and have been avoiding most of the ID threads, but I'll admit the issue is important. Religion is not science, and science is not religion.

I have a different take. Moonbats are immoral bullies.
Like a typical playground bully, a Moonbat would have no problem with a quick, successful, casualty-free war, and they couldn't care less about the justification as long as they got a quick victory. But as soon as they encounter some serious opposition they start to look for excuses to cut and run - and being immoral, their excuses always involve blaming someone else.

No, it has some of everything, ribs, BBQ chicken, roast beef, fries, corn, corn meal rolls.

Heaven on earth.

Everytime Mrs. 3 wood goes out of town, the healthy choice dinner sstay in the fridge and a trash can lid gets picked up a Dave's.

Speaking of which, they got another family wedding coming up in chicago in a few weeks.

Oh darn, guess I got to stay home and take care of the dog. :)

Oh, poor you! Tragedy, and yet you willingly accept such sacrifices! A martyr you are, sir.

Actually, that sounds great, but usually even corn meal products have some wheat in it. I know my grandmother's recipe does. So I have to figure out how to adapt that, too.

I want to know what on earth is wrong with people who think that the way to run a war is to set a strict time limit for coming home, regardless of victory or loss.

War is not a basketball game, where the winning team is the one that's leading at the end of the hour.

War is like checkers, or chess. There is no set time period, and the winner is the last team still present and functioning on the field of play.

I know a lot of folks dislike him for lots of reasons, including the semi-conspiracy ones (he wasn't born an American Citizen, he's the Muslims's Manchurian Candidate and all) but I don't like him because he is genuinely devoid of any new, good ideas. I intensely DISLIKE him because he really doesn't like or respect American - or the 85% of which is White (minus of course Billy Boy Ayers and his wife, Bernadine Dorhn and their ilk). No government, no matter how noble or how intelligent, can make better decisions than millions of people each on the scene making the decisions that make their part better.

And there wouldn't have been a bank run had Schumer not written his letter - because the bank was solvent and the consumers at the bank were FDIC protected up to $100,000.

Schumer wanted to see a bank run because it benefits Democrats who want to see the economy tank because they think it benefits Democrat election chances in November.

The way the media is reporting these stories shows that they refuse to report accurately or put proper perspective on the situation. Some banks may fail, but the overwhelming majority of the 7,000+ banks nationwide are safe and in no trouble. If 90 banks go under this year (a worst case scenario), that's a grand total of 1.2% of all banks. That means that 98.8% of banks are solvent and in no trouble.

Gates is not allowing US troops to clean out the camps along the border according to recent article in Washington Times.

Boogers, I was liking Gates.

On which side of the border?

Pitch forks, torches, tar, feathers and a rail.

I think it might go through. Public pressure is nearing 70% for drilling. $4+ gas is a big motivator.

When you drop the arm angle down, the breaking stuff flattens out

It's much easier to hit a flat curve than one dropping.

but I don't think the hitters have so far picked up on that with Pedro.

I don't mean for this to sound arrogant, but it is amazing to me how dumb your average major league hitter is.

They are not that bright in general...

I'm thinking of going to the All Star parade this afternoon... I have my digital camera armed and ready... It's 2 blocks away although I'll bet I should be there already...

At least according to the MSM. Their definition of a good economy is a Democrat in the White House. Period.

Obama says we should attack Pakistan

Did he say PAH-ki-stahn?

He doesn't mean it, of course. Like all the LLL shreaking before the Iraqi invasion that Iran or NK were bigger threats, but who all changed their tune when eyes turned to Iran next. He just means it for distraction or critique (we "should" have done this instead) but if the call comes for actual action to back him up, there will be a new reason not to act there either.

re: #610 sparrowlake

I have a different take. Moonbats are immoral bullies.
Like a typical playground bully, a Moonbat would have no problem with a quick, successful, casualty-free war, and they couldn't care less about the justification as long as they got a quick victory. But as soon as they encounter some serious opposition they start to look for excuses to cut and run - and being immoral, their excuses always involve blaming someone else.

Combination of the above?

My approach was more looking at the conflict-resolution types who look for the source of the bullies anguish. "It's not really their fault, its because they were made fun of when they were younger"

Your approach is looking at the bullies themselves... "Oh crap, that backfired... have to find a way to avoid punishment"

lol, totally OT and unrelated, but I just remembered a quote. Apparently there is an old Russian proverb: "An Arab is someone who can piss in your face and tell you it is raining"... thought I'd share that with you all.

re: #720 itellu3times

I'm in a situation where I like stocks that go up.

Well, I'm not going to advocate for or against individual stocks in a public setting.

But what you choose to invest in depends on your ability to handle risk, how long you can tie money up for (never expose money to the stock market that you need back faster than 5 years), how close to retirement you are (the closer to retirement you get the less you should have exposed to stock market risk) and your own investment preferences.

For example, right at the moment bank stocks may not be the best sector to buy, but individually there are some bargains out there too in that sector. Overall, I see the energy sector making a lot of money in the future.

Don't try to hit home runs. The singles and walks add up over the years.
