Islamic Saudi Academy Teaching Hatred, Sharia

Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 8:53:49 am PDT

The Washington Post follows up on the Islamic Saudi Academy in Fairfax, Virginia, and discovers that the textbooks used in the school were still promoting jihad and the hatred of infidels as recently as 2006: Review Finds Slurs In ‘06 Saudi Texts.

A Saudi-funded academy in Fairfax County used textbooks as recently as 2006 that compared Jews and Christians to apes and pigs, told eighth-graders that these groups are “the enemies of the believers” and diagrammed for high school students where to cut off the hands and feet of thieves, a Washington Post review of the books has found.

Saudi officials acknowledged that the textbooks used at the Islamic Saudi Academy had contained inflammatory material since at least the mid-1990s but said they ordered revisions in 2006. School administrators said that they have been scrambling to change the texts and that all potentially offensive passages will be gone by the coming academic year. But, they said, teachers have always been told to avoid inflammatory material in the classroom.

A sampling of 2006-07 Islamic studies textbooks showed that much of the controversial material had been removed. At least one book still contained passages that extolled jihad and martyrdom, called for victory over one’s enemies and said the killing of adulterers and apostates was “justified.”

Charles Haynes, senior scholar for religious freedom at the First Amendment Center in the District, said the school "deserves credit for trying to clean up the textbooks. That's a big job, given the long history of these kinds of materials being used in Saudi Arabia. They made an effort. They probably need to do better."

Perhaps they could have used.... different books. What a concept!

27 MJ  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 9:04:20am
"...Despite the recommendation from a federal panel that the Islamic Saudi Academy in Alexandria, Va., be closed for promoting hate, the State Department won't go along. State has jurisdiction because as part of the Saudi government, the school is subject to the Foreign Missions Act. A local Democratic politician running for Congress won't support the closing of the school, either. He is Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly, who has reportedly called critics of the academy "bigots." Perhaps his position is related to a $2.2 million check he accepted from the Saudi Embassy to extend its lease."

None of this makes any sense to me. In a normal world, we would have been less tolerant and more suspicious of anything Islamic after 9/11. However, as a society, we are now jumping through hoops to accommodate Islam- a society that is bent on destroying the West. And why? Because we don' want to be seen as intolerant. Yet in the same breath, there are those in the West who are intolerant of all Judeo/Christian beliefs. Things are so screwed up it boggles the mind.

From the link:

About 70 percent of the academy's students are U.S. citizens drawn from the region's Muslim communities. About a quarter are Saudi...The debate is befuddling to many affiliated with the academy, which has a graduation rate of nearly 100 percent, sends students to prestigious colleges and trains U.S. soldiers in Arabic -- yet also counts among its alumni Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, a 1999 graduate convicted of plotting with al-Qaeda to kill President Bush.

I wonder if Ms. Fitzgerald's seeming incapacity to interpret language would disappear if the local Christian or Jewish schools were using the same language in their textbooks regarding Muslims.

Is this a pattern? First the editorial about Obama, now this. Is there hope for the Washignton Post?

Thank you kindly! I just didn't want to mess around with an otherwise perfectly stupid quote!

OTOH, do we really want the State Bd. of Ed. controlling the curriculum at private schools?

I would think even private schools have some education standards they have to meet.

no good - they'll lie or suffer punishment on themselves or their families.

re: #80 pat

How about interviewing some students about what the Imams are actually telling them.

89 drj  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 9:58:55am

something tells me if this were a book degrading Muslims and calling for their murder, the powers that be would have shut down the school, NOT allowed several years to "try and clean up textbooks".

Am I the only one that sees a "silent take over" of this country?

Nope, you're not.

School administrators said that they have been scrambling to change the texts and that all potentially offensive passages will be gone by the coming academic year.

The thing is they really do not find those passages offensive. They might remove them from the books, but will still teach them in the classroom.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools still lists the Islamic Saudi Academy as being accredited. (Scroll down past the list of public schools.) link

But if you dig around the SACS website there are some resources that explain what it takes for a school or district to gain SACS accreditation. Avanc-ED Accreditation Standards Here are a few snips from there.

.2.3 Ensures compliance with applicable local, state, and federal laws, standards, and regulations

2.8 Controls curricular and extracurricular activities that are
sponsored by the school

3.2 Promotes active involvement of students in the learning process,
including opportunities for them to explore application of higherorder
thinking skills and investigate new approaches in applying
their learning

3.5 Offers a curriculum that challenges each student to excel, reflects a
commitment to equity, and demonstrates an appreciation of diversity.

Seems they fail on all of those standards. So the accreditation should be revoked.

Keith Fimian is the newbie GOP candidate running against the entrenched democrat Gerold Connolly who approved this school lease & took $2.2 million dollars for its continued operation.

Please help him defeat defeatists.

And because they were told not to engage in anything inflammatory the teachers obeyed right? Or maybe it's a definitional question of what is inflammatory? Like it's inflammatory for the students to be taught to love all God's creatures, like pigs and dogs and monkeys, and infidels; but not inflammatory to teach them to hate infidels, jews, christians, hindus, and not inflammatory to side with those who want to become jihadis, to support Hamass, Hizbollah, Iranian Revolutionary Guards, OBL, etc. Got it.

Some good old fashioned interfaith dialogue ought to cure this in a heartbeat. I suggest the Discovery Institute host a happy shiny Interfaith Hand Shaking Leads to Understanding Religious Tolerance Fest, catered by the local chapter of Klukkers and Friends of Buchanan International.

Just remember: no pork at the interfaith potluck. Pork always leads to violence.

Why can't these people make the connection between the reason they came to this country and why they left their old one.... Islam. It is the reason there is little progress in their old country and the reason the felt the need to leave..... Leave it where you left it.

99 abuhoul  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 4:05:54pm

I took too long to comment - this has been up all day now, but I have to comment even if no one reads it...

"...avoid inflammatory material" it says...

Isn't that just another way of saying "don't let anyone know how we really feel..." ?

What their administrators need to say (to get me to calm down) is: "Maybe we ought to totally excise hogshit propaganda speak from our hate filled mooj vernacular..."

Doubt it.

re: #92 Mich-again

Yes, it surely looks like Islamic Saudi Academy has violated The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation rules.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools should suspend the Islamic Saudi Academy’s accreditation now and not reinstate it until all federal investigations are complete including any court proceedings.

I am sure if it were a private Christian Academy that had that hate material The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools would have pulled their accreditation long ago.

Revoke the Islamic Saudi Academy’s accreditation now.
