Now Obama is Promising to Get Rid of All Nuclear Weapons

Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 12:07:46 pm PDT

Barack Obama has a plan to get rid of all the nuclear weapons in the world.

He’s going to achieve this amazing feat by making sure the US adheres to nonproliferation treaties.

Two goals of his administration would be to secure all loose nuclear material during his first term and to rid the world of nuclear weapons, Obama told an audience before a roundtable discussion at Purdue University.

Obama said adhering to nonproliferation treaties would put pressure on nations such as North Korea and Iran.

Because Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Kim Jong-Il will look at the US adhering to those treaties, and be embarrassed into getting rid of their weapons programs.

Or something like that.

What is really stupid about his comments (and the reporting of them) is that he said this while "warning" us not to "fight the last war" and instead focus on the threat of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons.

Ummmm. Wasn't that why we went into Iraq?

"As long as nuclear weapons exist, we'll retain a strong deterrent. But we will make the goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons a central element in our nuclear policy," Obama said.

So his goal is for us to loose our strong deterrents. Was this a prepared speech?

wishing and hoping - that's leadership.

51 eaglewingz08  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 12:15:21pm

He said this before, in a video on youtube (if it hasn't been deleted by the leftwingers there), and in addition to massive cuts in the defense budgets. The guy is clueless, assume we destroy all our nukes, then what do we do if China attacks or Russia attacks, and lo and behold they haven't kept there word about destroying their nukes? Good luck with that. We have problems fielding a four hundred thousand person armed forces, imagine having to go up against millions, without a nuke deterrent. Indeed, South Korea and Japan have only been able to be at peace with their more numerous neighbors in China and Russia because of the US nuke umbrella. If they see that we unilaterally disarm, that would cause an arms race in East Asia.
What is more frightening is that the Obamanation may condition aid to Israel on it destroying its alleged nukes or in compelling Israel to sign non proliferation treaties, in order to 'calm' muslim country's fears of Israeli retaliatory powers.
This candidate is the worst of all possible democrats who have ever run in the past forty years, if that were possible, and I'm afraid it is.

52 looking closely  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 12:15:25pm

I've heard that the USA has already covertly bought up all the loose nuclear material on the market to make sure it doesn't fall into the wrong hands.

As to the rest of Obama's talk, its just pap. The reason we have nukes is to put a scare into the bad ones with the nukes.

Obama would have cops give up their guns to lead the criminals by example.

Nuclear weapons are not things to be counted and rounded up. They are knowledge of how to build one, and the will to use them. It only takes, for now, a nation state with the will and means to produce one.

I could see how bewildered the girl was but the plain fact of the matter was that I knew nuclear annihilation was terrible but Kim Jong Il did not.

"In the Cold War, we didn't defeat the Soviets just because of the strength of our arms."

No, but the strength of our arms kept them at bay long enough to get a President who wanted to defeat them, not coexist with them. The inability of the Soviets economy to keep up with us in an arms race ultimately led to their demise.

As much as I'm not fond of nukes, Obama is nucking futs and completely off his rocker. It is as if he thinks he really is the messiah and can do no wrong.

Hey, why so much Messiah-bashing around here? His Holiness doesn't want to unilaterally disarm America! He specifically said "As long as nuclear weapons exist, we'll retain a strong deterrent. But we will make the goal of eliminating all nuclear weapons a central element in our nuclear policy."

Apparently, he's going to make all of the world's nuclear weapons disappear at the same time, perhaps using some sort of a "poof!" apparatus. And then nobody will want to have them anymore, so nobody will try to build them ever again, and we can all get together and have face painting and eat waffles together.

I went to Nagasaki (a beautiful town, really) and was approached by a schoolgirl with a petition to eliminate nuclear arms (quite a popular cause there). I wouldn't sign it. I could see how bewildered the girl was but the plain fact of the matter was that I knew nuclear annihilation was terrible but Kim Jong Il did not.
Obama's complete lack of knowledge and experience is going to destroy the Korean peninsula (as well as ruin the Canadian economy).
What an @$$hole.

What irritates me so much about that attitude (the girl's) is that those two bombs saved more Japanese lives than American. But I guess they're still pissed about our derailing their "rule the world" campaign.

As nukes go, those two bombs were firecrackers.

They were good, healthy kiloton-range, about what you need if you can deliver things on target. Of course we build them much smaller now.

AFAIK, we've never even done the science on building seriously big boomers. What's the biggest ever done, something like 25megatons by the Soviets? Might be nice to have one or two seriously large bombs for extra special targets, if it ever comes to that. Come in handy if that asteroid ever heads this way, too. So let's build it, for the children.

Gabriel Over the White House

Newly elected president Judson Hammond is shown to be a lackey of his party, willing to follow the party line even if it's not in the best interest of the people. Showing off by driving his own car to a political meeting, he crashes at high speed. Comatose, he is not expected to recover. But on regaining consciousness, he is a changed man. Dismissing his cabinet and defying Congress, he assumes near-dictatorial powers in order to cut through red tape and institute sweeping measures to reduce unemployment. He even goes so far as to gently threaten nations owing the United States money from World War I to find a way to repay their debts by reducing their arms races. Having brokered this important safeguard for the world's peace, Hammond is stricken down, his work done.

Check out the shock wave relative to the cloud from the aerial view in this clip at about 33 seconds into the clip. Lots of material in the atmoshpere before the shock wave moves far out.

Obamanation says we have to 'stop fighting the last war'. [Link: news.yahoo.com...]

I guess that means he wants to surrender in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Seems to me also, that the dems not only don't want to fight the last war, they've been against fighting any war, especially if a Repub is President. Also seems to me the only war they seem to think the US is fighting is the Vietnam War even though that war ended thirty five years ago. So the dems are fighting (against) the Vietnam War, while the Repubs and the rest of the country (excluding the dems are fighting the current wars).

A few other relevant Deep Thoughts:

Instead of trying to build newer and bigger weapons of destruction, we should be thinking about getting more use out of the ones we already have.

If you're in a war, instead of throwing a hand grenade at the enemy, throw one of those small pumpkins. Maybe it'll make everyone think how stupid war is, and while they are thinking, you can throw a real grenade at them.

Racer X,

I smell bullshit too. Two guys in the right corner of the pic are talking nonchalantly, facing each other instead of the blast. You'd think a massive explosion and mushroom cloud would've grabbed their attention.

Also, note the tire marks near that car in the photo. The car that made these two, equal-length tire marks had positraction. You can't make those marks without positraction, which was not available on the '34 Buick Skylark. The '34 Skylark had a regular differential, which, anyone who's been stuck in the mud in Nagasaki knows, you step on the gas, one tire spins, the other tire does nothing.

Also: When the left tire mark goes up on the curb and the right tire mark stays flat and even? Well, the '34 Skylark had a solid rear axle, so when the left tire would go up on the curb, the right tire would tilt out and ride along its edge. But that didn't happen here. The tire mark stayed flat and even. This car had an independent rear suspension. Now, in the '30's, there were only two other cars made in America that had positraction, and independent rear suspension, and enough power to make these marks. One was the Corvette, which could never be confused with the Buick Skylark. The other had the same body length, height, width, weight, wheel base, and wheel track as the '34 Skylark, and that was the 1933 Pontiac Tempest.

Those carriers were built because they didn't meet the definitions of the Washington Naval Treaties, which limited fleet size.

The Germans promptly broke the treaty, but the US adhered to them until it was nearly too late. However, US planners were already drawing up the Essex class carriers and the Iowa class battleships, along with every manner of ship imaginable.

Very true, but the first of the Essex class carriers and modern battleships (USS North Carolina ?) didn't arrive in the Pacific until we were almost 15 months into the war. We won't have the luxury of time - next time.

Yes and imagine what the war would have looked like if they were in port on that sunny Sunday morning in December 1941.

A friend and I have had that discussion. The war in the Pacific would have lasted until at least 1947-48 and cause at least another 500,000 US casaulties.

No, I think we would have negotiated an end to hostilities in late 1942 after the Japanese invaded Australia and initiated a blockade of Hawaii after capturing Midway. We'd have had no way to stop them.

It's from the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, through the Corbis agency. I seriously doubt they would distribute a fake photo.

They probably wouldn't knowingly distribute a fake, which doesn't absolutely exclude the possibility.

If it were a fake (and I'm not saying it is), then it would probably be one of the more traditional darkroom variety.

No, but the strength of our arms kept them at bay long enough to get a President who wanted to defeat them, not coexist with them. The inability of the Soviets economy to keep up with us in an arms race ultimately led to their demise.

re: #266 Occasional Reader

Once again: Jimmy Carter never served on a nuclear boat. He was part way through officer version of reactor operator's school when his father died and he resigned his commission to go home to run the family peanut business. FWIW, I don't think he'd have made it through the Rickover interview either.

Supposedly he was interviewed by Rickover:

Rickover's technique for interviewing prospective commanding officers was brutal. Along with the expected detailed examination of your qualifications he had you sit in a chair that had the front legs sawed off just enough to make you slide forward and remain very uncomfortable during the interview. On one occasion he had one of his young secretaries take off her shoes, stand in front of a line of prospective commanding officers and sing "My hero" to them while she stood there in her bare feet. He felt this exercise would humble them a little. I'm sure it did, but did they really need humbling? President Jimmy Carter once wrote about his interview with Rickover when he was still a young junior officer. Rickover asked him about his class standing when he graduated from the Naval Academy. Carter told the Admiral that he had graduated fifty ninth out of one hundred and twenty graduates in 1946. Rickover then asked him why he had not graduated number one. Carter thought about it for a little while and replied that he supposed he had just not tried hard enough.

Rickover asked. "Why not?"

Carter was speechless. He could not come up with a sensible answer to this logical question. A young kid from Plains, Georgia was given the opportunity to go to the Naval Academy, no doubt the biggest opportunity of his life up until that time and once there he did not give it his best effort! Carter didn't know what to say next, but he made a decision that would change his life forever. Never again would he shirk a great opportunity. Many years later President Carter wrote a book titled, "Why not the best?" I bet you can guess how he came up with that title.

More dumb shit snipped from Obama's speech..

Every American depends – directly or indirectly – on our system of information networks. They are increasingly the backbone of our economy and our infrastructure; our national security and our personal well-being. But it’s no secret that terrorists could use our computer networks to deal us a crippling blow. We know that cyber-espionage and common crime is already on the rise. And yet while countries like China have been quick to recognize this change, for the last eight years we have been dragging our feet.

Obama is saying that the US Government should follow China's lead on watching over the internets. You know, for our own good.

With regards to your remarks, I'd even take it a step further and say that given a nuclear explosion in a populated area, chances are pretty good that within a several mile radius of the bomb site someone had a camera and snapped a shot.

Charles, thanks for linking to those site regarding Nagasaki and A-Bombs. This new generation may that forgotten about the deadly power of nuclear weapons but it's real to me and other my age. The Cuban Crisis brought panic to many who tried at that last minute to build home shelters or to stock up on camping food supplies or who were ready to jump into any hole.

One newspaper story of the 1960s described how one Russian bomb could target Chicago and also wipe out Minneapolis. Now that's scary!

If anyone needs to understand why we need to be concerned about Iran/Noko/Syrian bombs, they need to see what happened to all those who lived through the two bombs dropped on Japan and the sheer number killed in one instant.

There's a reason why we need to keep nukes from spreading everywhere but BHO doesn't have a clue. God save us from him and his foolishness.

READY TO BELIEVE

I'm ready to believe
No more people who deceive
It's his time to take the stage
It's our time to turn the page
I don't want to be feeling sad
I don't want to be feeling bad
Give us one good man
Who says yes
Yes we can

They say he must wait his turn
They say too much to learn
They say he should stand in line
It's their plan, not mine

CHORUS (I'm ready to believe...)

They say it's a fairy tale
They say rolling dice can only fail
They say it will fall apart
He alone speaks from my heart

CHORUS
CHORUS

Can we see the future and not the past?
Yes we can
Can we come together and make a change?
Yes we can
Can we really believe again?
Yes we can

We say, now is the time
We say, this is the plan
We say, it takes one good man

Yes we can

If the camera were not in the direct line of sight of the bomb when it detonated, the radiation would not necessarily get to it. I don't know off hand if Nagasaki was a ground or air burst, but the terrain likely shielded it and any suitably thick piece of matter between the bomb and the camera would have shielded it.

Nuclear shielding for gamma radiation, the most penetrating type (think X-Ray), is measured in tenth thicknesses, the amount of a material that will reduce the strength of the radiation to 1/10th of its original value. It varies by material and wavelength, but is usually given in terms of what they call the most penetrating wavelength. As a rule of thumb, it is 2" for lead, and 2' for water.

So then its impossible to take a picture of a star or light bulb?

The point, I think, is that the flash of a nuclear blast lasts for only a small fraction of a second and can't be readily captured by a hand-triggered camera.

I think the original was simply a snarky comment, that the Nagasaki image wasn't *exactly* at the moment of detonation, but rather probably a few seconds later.

But this ONLY works if you start with believing America is evil. I cannot count my acquaintance who would un-hesitantly say that we should disarm first, and that we are the biggest threat.

re: #146 Charles

The exact moment of detonation at Nagasaki, from ground level.

Fantastic! I had never seen that one before. I know a little something about nuclear explosions and I believe the picture is authentic. The shape of the mushroom cloud, compared to the images from the Bikini and the Trinity tests, indicates a time of about 2 seconds after detonation.
The image of the mushroom cloud subtends about 25 degrees of the frame, with the shock wave expanded to only slightly greater than the diameter of the cloud. This would give a distance of a little over two miles.
If the people had been looking directly at the flash, they would of course have been blinded, at least temporarily. The point source of the flash would probably have been below their line of sight, however, and this would have shielded the film as well. There was also a line of high ground running through Nagasaki that shielded part of the city from the flash as well. It could well be that they are on the opposite side of that high ground from the explosion. They would therefore have been exposed to little thermal or radiant energy. The partially shielded blast at that distance would still have been fairly severe, enough to break windows and collapse weak structures, but the shock wave has obviously not reached them yet.

But by that logic, it's impossible for any of the photographs of nuclear explosions to be real. Now that's a Reuters' level fauxtography feat! :P

Remember, the bombs used then weren't powerful by today's standards of nuclear weapons. The photographer was far enough away from the epicenter to not be fried instantly but to still capture it. The explosion was visible from a considerable distance away after all.

Bart of course wishes for something frivolous but his sister piously wishes for world peace. Sure enough, people are soon shown turning in weapons of all sorts, countries destroy their arsenals and everyone is shown standing around holding hands and singing "I'd like to give the world a hug." At that point, poorly armed but rapacious aliens the disarmed Earth and have little trouble taking over. Apparently succeeding in angering the Admiral. It goes on to say that the Admiral did not ask that question to any further candidates.

I can actually see some value to a "stress" type interview if you are interviewing someone for what is a high-pressure job (submarine work would qualify, I think).

But obviously, you can go too far.

Nuclear Power School, even on the enlisted track that I took, was stressful, and it ratcheted up at the Prototype trainer. (S5G in Idaho) It's not exactly something I remember fondly.

The State Department has been put in charge of Inventory and Collection. Negotiations are underway with Disneyland to carry out the requisite transmutation, using spare capacity of their nuclear power plants. The end product will be used mostly for Chia Pets™. Libya and China are currently negotiating with Maxine Waters and Rev. Wright over quantity pricing and delivery schedules. Dubai has recently announced an offer of free shipping, but only for the premium grade Obamium. Behold, the newest, self-absorbed, ludicrously lofty Obama-phernalia available at his website.

That's right, it appears to be a faux-leather-bound collector's edition DVD of the "More Perfect Union" speech. A piece of oratory ripe for canonization at the age of just three months. A piece of oratory so sage in its insight, so true in its observations, so riveting in its delivery, that the orator himself admitted it was all bunk just one month after its delivery, and yet still believes that you should own a copy of this "landmark speech" from which he has since entirely backtracked.

Not only is this a ridiculously egotistical move, even for a presidential candidate, but it's yet another appropriation of traditional patriotic words and imagery by a man who has claimed to dislike the manipulation of patriotic imagery for political purposes. ...

At any rate, if you want some wisdom from the Obamessiah himself, readily available for playing at dinner parties and coffee-table display, you can have it for just $12. Quite a bargain, if you consider you may be hearing from the Lord himself.

Obama does speak the language of Christianity, but unlike most religious politicians, he always seems to use language that places himself in the role of the Lord.

Racer X,

I smell bullshit too. Two guys in the right corner of the pic are talking nonchalantly, facing each other instead of the blast. You'd think a massive explosion and mushroom cloud would've grabbed their attention.

in case you weren't kidding:

At the time of the explosion, then, energy was given off in the forms of light, heat, gamma radiation, and pressure. The whole range of radiations, indeed, seems to have been present. There were heat radiations in the low frequency band below infrared, visible waves of all colors (as the eyewitness accounts show), and penetrating radiations of very high frequency generally grouped as "gamma rays." Light and radiant heat ("flash heat") sped out in all directions at a rate of 186,000 miles per second, and the gamma rays at the same rate (though their effect was not immediately obvious). The shock waves travelled much more slowly. It may be inferred from tests with high explosives that the rate at a relative short distance from the point of explosion was about 2 miles per second, and dropped rapidly to the speed of sound, or about one-fifth of a mile per second. Thus the light, heat, and gamma radiation reached the target first, followed by shock and sound and the high winds of the blast.

What irritates me so much about that attitude (the girl's) is that those two bombs saved more Japanese lives than American. But I guess they're still pissed about our derailing their "rule the world" campaign.

That's kind of the impression I get. Can't you think of any conditions in which you'd rather die than surrender? In this case, we and the Japanese were on opposite sides of such conditions, so we fought a war.

They would have fought, hard, if we'd invaded the home islands. They would have lost eventually (especially since I think that Stalin was also going to participate with his entire army) at great cost in life to both sides. But I understand that it's still taboo to say any of this in Japan.

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

1 — has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

2 — is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

3 — believes that he or she is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

4 — requires excessive admiration

5 — has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

6 — is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

7 — lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others

8 — is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

9 — shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Wow. well under the bus

Afghans not unconquerable

During just the last millenium or so Afghanistan has been conquered several times. Some examples: the Ghaznavids (962 - 1186), the Timurids (1369 - 1506--Tamerlane et al.), then the Moghuls followed by Iranians (1504 - 1709).

Perhaps the most noteworthy thing about Afghan history is that a recognizably Afghan independent state did not arise until one was formed by Ahmad Shah Durrani in 1747. The remarkable fact, contrary to popular myth, is actually how often Afghanistan has been under foreign rule.

Another liberal media myth falls.

the facts;
The Battle of Iwo Jima (February 19-March 26, 1945) was the American capture of the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese, producing some of the fiercest fighting in the Pacific Campaign of World War II.

The Japanese positions on the island were heavily fortified, with vast bunkers, hidden artillery, and 18 kilometers (11 mi) of tunnels.[2][3] The battle was the first American attack on the Japanese Home Islands and the Imperial soldiers defended their positions tenaciously. Of the 21,000 Japanese soldiers present at the beginning of the battle, over 20,000 were killed and only 216 taken prisoner.[1] The U.S. invasion, known as Operation Detachment, was charged with the mission of capturing the airfields on Iwo Jima.[1]

I trust you saw this fine essay in the Globe?

We are not the Soviets ...
The 1979 invasion of Afghanistan holds no real military lessons for NATO and its allies by Col. GEORGE PETROLEKAS

The latest trend in political punditry with respect to Afghanistan focuses on its "historically unconquerable" nature - highlighted by a long list of unsuccessful foreign efforts paraded in newspaper columns across the nation. The most compelling of these is the attempt to draw hard and fast conclusions from the Soviet Union's 1979 invasion that ended with its ignominious withdrawal a decade later...

...And yet the latest reconstruction of history goes on to suggest that any assistance the West might provide to Afghanistan is doomed to failure - witness the Soviet military defeat. But this does not stand after closer scrutiny, especially for those of us who spent our military adolescence in training to fight the Soviets. To compare Western militaries to the Soviet forces of old is akin to plotting Stanley Cup strategy on the basis of midget league hockey. It's hockey, of course, just separated by a wide gulf of capability.

The did a couple of years ago apologize to Korea for using the women as sex slaves for their army. Some clues should be seeping through. They don't have a closed internet like China. Then again, they are not like us, dwelling on bad things and cutting down our country like the liberal demorats all the time do.

The government admitted it, though much of the public thought it was nonsense. My wife didn't really have any conception of Pearl Harbor, the Island hopping campaign or hear of things like Bataan until after we had met. They simply had never been talked about when she was growing up.

Let's see now. The Obamassiah is going to end the war in Iraq by withdrawing troops, win the war in Afghanistan by sending more troops, bring our enemies into the peaceful fold with the sheer magnetism of his personality and, with a wave of his elegant hand, bring to an end the threat of nuclear annihilation.

Sigh. It's all so beautiful it must be true.

Afghanistan worked well with RWR overall strategy in confronting the Sovs.

First he quit supplying the Sovs and client states with humanitarian aid. This put more pressure on the Sov treasury to take up the slack.

Second he challenged the Sovs in all their foreign adventures, Afghanistan, Central America, Grenada and else where. This forced to Sovs to step up expenditures in support of these clients.

Third was the intel war. Among efforts we "let" Sov spies have certain altered plans. The results where the natural gas plant explosion which set the gas line to Europe back years depriving them of currency for the sales and costing redesign and rebuilding. And the Shuttle Buran which drained billions more.

Forth was the arms build up the most recognized of RWR initiatives.

All together it work just as RWR said in a speeches as far back as 1957.

re: #504 Occasional Reader

There are several reasons why an amphibious landing on Japan was going to be more costly. Firstly, England was not a few miles away across a channel. The men & material would have to come from much farther away, increasing the cost, reducing the numbers available at any given time & making them an easier target for the Japanese defenders. without the critical mass of a huge assault, the defenders could kill more invaders as they arrived in smaller formations over an extended period of time.

Secondly, the Allies landed on Occupied France, not directly on Germany. The Japanese would have more people and defenses immediately available to defend their homeland.

Thirdly, Japan was much mmore densely populated, meaning the fighing would be all that more intense.

Finally, Japan is a series of islands, meaning it would have required a series of amphibious assaults, each as deadly as the last.

Consider the battles for Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Repeat several times over.

I suspect a little hyperbole here. First, on what basis would they believe that amphibious landings on the Japanese mainland would be SO much more lethal than those that had been done already both in Europe and the Pacific? Second; even if they did believe that, why on earth would they brief the Marines who were going to be ordered ashore "by the way, we think you're all going to die"?

Probably the best source for information about this is Code-Name Downfall: The Secret Plan to Invade Japan and Why Truman Dropped the Bomb by Norman Polmar and Thomas B. Allen

This was published in 1995. The full plan for Downfall had remained classified until 1992, apparently on the grounds that some of it might have been useful to Soviet planners during the Cold War.

The largest Japanese force encountered during the island-hopping campaign was that on Okinawa, about 130,000 troops. They had twenty times that many in the home islands. They also had many thousands of suicide planes since most of their production had been held back for this purpose after the fuel supply was cut off by the US blockade. Additionally, the entire civilian population was being trained to attack US troops with spears, garden tools and other improvised weapons as a kind of suicide militia.

They are always surprised to learn the Germans had already surrendered. Haven't met one yet that knew that.

And then there is the dreaded, scary dihydrogen monoxide (queue the shark music).

Speaking of shark music, I have noticed that every aquarium that has anything show on sharks always does the exact same thing.

They start off with 15 minutes in a dramatic, scary voice talking about what perfect predators they are, showing all those rows of huge, sharp teeth, show films of feeding frenzies, and play dramatic music akin to the theme from Jaws.

Then, they segway into the final 5 minutes complaining that ignorant humans are unfairly afraid of sharks.

Studs Terkel of The Guardian, interviews Col. Paul Tibbets on August 6, 2002

ST: Do you ever have any second thoughts about the bomb?

PT: Second thoughts? No.

Studs, look. Number one, I got into the air corps to defend the United States to the best of my ability. That's what I believe in and that's what I work for. Number two, I'd had so much experience with airplanes... I'd had jobs where there was no particular direction about how you do it and then of course I put this thing together with my own thoughts on how it should be because when I got the directive I was to be self-supporting at all times.

On the way to the target I was thinking: I can't think of any mistakes I've made. Maybe I did make a mistake: maybe I was too damned assured. At 29 years of age I was so shot in the ass with confidence I didn't think there was anything I couldn't do. Of course, that applied to airplanes and people. So, no, I had no problem with it. I knew we did the right thing because when I knew we'd be doing that I thought, yes, we're going to kill a lot of people, but by God we're going to save a lot of lives. We won't have to invade [Japan].

Paul Tibbets on 9/11 terrorists

ST: One big question. Since September 11, what are your thoughts? People talk about nukes, the hydrogen bomb.

PT: Let's put it this way. I don't know any more about these terrorists than you do, I know nothing. When they bombed the Trade Centre I couldn't believe what was going on. We've fought many enemies at different times. But we knew who they were and where they were. These people, we don't know who they are or where they are. That's the point that bothers me. Because they're gonna strike again, I'll put money on it. And it's going to be damned dramatic. But they're gonna do it in their own sweet time. We've got to get into a position where we can kill the bastards. None of this business of taking them to court, the hell with that. I wouldn't waste five seconds on them.

re: #519 Occasional Reader

[Link: www.fpri.org...]

I can't find it now- it seems the cops and army would rather rob and rape them and leave the murder to others per the below.

A study conducted in the Tenosique area of Tabasco, a Mexican state neighboring Chiapas, found that three groups - - criminals (47.5 percent), the local police (15.2 percent), and migration agents (15.2 percent) — accounted for most of the exploitation of migrants arriving from Central America. The 100 or more criminal bands that prey on interlopers run the gamut from petty thugs to coyotes (smugglers), from mafia-style squads to vicious street gangs.

The most notorious gang, often likened to the Crips and the Bloods of Los Angeles, is the Mara Salvatruchas, composed chiefly of former members of the Salvadoran army who have been deported from Los Angeles and other American cities. These tattooed hoodlums, who number in the tens of thousands, style themselves as “migrant hunters.” They rob, mutilate, and murder the illegal aliens who jump off northbound trains approaching checkpoints at night. Aliens remaining on the “trains of death” often clamor about the box cars, falling off or getting crushed in the wheels. The bloodthirsty Maras also carry out car thefts and kidnappings, according to a Catholic immigrant-aid committee.

Rather than engage in violence, unscrupulous officials typically exact bribes. The payments may be a few dollars to allow a single person to transit the border or thousands of dollars to permit the passage of drugs, weapons, stolen automobiles, prostitutes, exotic animals, or archeological artifacts. Individuals and professional smugglers often endure shakedowns from both Mexican and Guatemalan officials before encountering private-sector bandits.

In El Carmen, Guatemala—just across the bridge from Talisman, Mexico, and a stone’s throw away from a Guatemalan immigration post—there is a large open lot packed with vehicles bearing California, Texas, and Arizona license tags. The lot highlights the impunity with which malefactors carry out their trade. Equally visible from the bridge joining the twin cities of Ciudad Hidalgo (Mexico) and Tecun Uman (Guatemala) are the ubiquitous balsas, boards perched on truck tires that serve as precarious ferries for migrants and locals willing to pay a few pesos to cross the slow- moving, chocolate-colored Suchiate. The largest number of complaints of wrongdoing in Guatemala is lodged against that country’s National Civil Police, which is even more corrupt than the notoriously corrupt Mexican police. The labor union that represents Guatemala’s immigration agents also engages in the lucrative smuggling of people.

Individual smugglers, who can charge $5,000 or more to guide one person 1,500 miles from Central America to the United States, can earn as much as $100,000 per year — an amount that a handful of Middle Easterners and Asians are willing to pay to reach the United States. Professional criminal organizations — some of them headquartered in China, Korea, or the Philippines — can amass huge fortunes in smuggling. The smuggling of humans is thought to be the third most profitable illegal activity in Mexico, after narcotrafficking and commerce in stolen automobiles. After visiting Chiapas, Gabriela Rodriguez, the UN Human Rights Commissioner’s special rapporteur on migrants’ rights, said: “Mexico is one of the countries where illegal immigrants are highly vulnerable to human rights violations and become victims of degrading sexual exploitation and slavery-like practices, and are denied access to education and healthcare.” And yet Mexican officials continue to emphasize abuses at their

Forget the tanks. Give them 300 hand-phasers and a handful of tricorders.

But seriously pholx, the reason that the Battle of Thermopylae was such a fork-in-the-road moment in history wasn't so much the fact that they won, by a narrow margin and at great cost to themselves... it was that their hard-won, died-to-the-last-man victory shocked the whole of the Greek world into realizing that such an amazing thing had been pulled off by single-handed fighting, and that such a limited group of people would be dedicated enough to sacrifice themselves to a man for such a cause as this... and that alone galvanized the entire civilization into a whole new mindset that they COULD all be one culture instead of a bunch of separate little city-states going their own way, and that push come to shove, they could take on the world by their sheer willpower and cooperation.

Take away the seemingly impossible odds (by, say, giving them a bunch of AK47s and a trainload of ammo) and it would have done away with that shock-realization effect that their victory had on their civilization, too.

635 lostlakehiker  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 4:10:02pm

Suppose, just as a thought experiment, that the world was able to arrange for the complete and irrevocable destruction of nuclear weapons. Nobody has them, nobody can ever build them.

The arms race would be on for ever more devastating biological weapons and for ever more sophisticated autonomous fighting machines. By and by, somebody would have the clever idea of building self-repairing, self-reproducing autonomous fighting machines.

They'd evolve (call it what you will, self-repairing, self-reproducing Things are, for purposes of understanding what will happen over time, alive) a variant that ignored the safeguards set upon their actions toward the citizens of their homeland or toward civilians generally.

I do not have the book in front of me, so cannot quote it directly. But Fussell describes the increased savagery of the Pacific war as it neared the home islands, mentioning Iwo Jima and Okinawa specifically, the intense fortification of the home islands, and the prepping of the entire civilian population for resistance.

I got the distinct impression reading the quote in question that briefings did not pull a lot of punches, and that in light of the fact that everyone--certainly the soldiers who were veterans of the recent island battles--was expecting the invasion to be a bloodbath, they were told how slim their chances were in order to inspire each person to be one of the few who did survive.

I knew a marine who snuck into Japan and reconnoitred those beaches. He was one of two survivors, out of a score or so who made the attempt.

His report was bucked straight up to Truman, and the gist of it was that `the defenses are unbelievably tight and dense, and it'll be far worse than Tarawa. The first wave will have to expect 100% casualties. The success of the invasion is doubtful.' And he had been at Tarawa, and several other bloody amphibious assaults, so he would have known.

Nuclear weapons are dangerous and unthinkable in the context of using; however as buzzsawmonkey has already said:

Which is the truth. In an ideal world, we could disarm and live happy lives - but this is not an ideal world. Idealism is nice but reality says different.

Nuclear weapons are dangerous and unthinkable in the context of using

I would not go so far as to say unthinkable.

We don't want to use them. We hope we won't. We would only use them in the most desperate situations, but when all other avenues have failed, but I could think of several scenarios to use them.

And if we say we would never use them, it is the same as being unarmed. We would be vulnerable targets for the world.

650 baxtrice  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 6:22:55pm

re: #649 Silhouette

I don't know if I could ever conceive of a situation to use them - but I understand why we have them. Disarming, and hoping the rest of the world disarms is a pipe dream. There will always be that one craven, power-hungry asshole who wants to take over the world/destroy the world and will stop at nothing to get his hands on nukes and we need to be able to defend ourselves.

About the only situation I can conceive of us using them is in defense - we still have guilt about Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I'm not saying we wrong in using the a-bomb, I'm saying we felt the loss of life, which makes us and our nation human. Unlike the terrorists who care not for the loss of life and will kill indiscriminately.

651 Perplexed  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 7:40:30pm

I have a friend who was on Johnson Island when the first outer space US nuke test took place. He said that they issued everyone goggles so dark that you could put them on, look at the sun and see nothing but black. Officials told the guys to put on the goggles and face away from the blast.

When the warhead detonated everything lit up as bright as day while wearing those goggles. He said when the light hit and he felt the wave of heat wash over him that his first thought was "oh shit, they detonated it too low." The light faded pretty rapidly, leaving a glowing cloud of ionized gases left over from the blast.

That test resulted in a wave of EMP washing across the Hawaiian islands, knock out power grids, telephones, etc. Our greatest fears were that the Soviets knew about that effect and would take advantage of our weakness. When the Soviets found out about that effect the thought that we would take advantage of their weakness regarding EMP.

The strange thing is that as electronics get smaller and smaller, they become more sensitive to EMP and high dosage radiation. We're more at risk now than back in the early days of nuke testing.
