Washington Post Goes Off the Obama Reservation

Wed, Jul 16, 2008 at 10:29:25 pm PDT

A surprising editorial at the Washington Post actually notices that Barack Obama’s Iraq policy is, and I quote, “irrational.”

BARACK OBAMA yesterday accused President Bush and Sen. John McCain of rigidity on Iraq: “They said we couldn’t leave when violence was up, they say we can’t leave when violence is down.” Mr. Obama then confirmed his own foolish consistency. Early last year, when the war was at its peak, the Democratic candidate proposed a timetable for withdrawing all U.S. combat forces in slightly more than a year. Yesterday, with bloodshed at its lowest level since the war began, Mr. Obama endorsed the same plan. After hinting earlier this month that he might “refine” his Iraq strategy after visiting the country and listening to commanders, Mr. Obama appears to have decided that sticking to his arbitrary, 16-month timetable is more important than adjusting to the dramatic changes in Iraq.

...

“What’s missing in our debate,” Mr. Obama said yesterday, “is a discussion of the strategic consequences of Iraq.” Indeed: The message that the Democrat sends is that he is ultimately indifferent to the war’s outcome — that Iraq “distracts us from every threat we face” and thus must be speedily evacuated regardless of the consequences. That’s an irrational and ahistorical way to view a country at the strategic center of the Middle East, with some of the world’s largest oil reserves. Whether or not the war was a mistake, Iraq’s future is a vital U.S. security interest. If he is elected president, Mr. Obama sooner or later will have to tailor his Iraq strategy to that reality.

The whole Obama campaign is irrational. But that said, it is good to see MSM going after this phony candidate finally.

It looks like people are starting to wake up and listen to what BHO is actually saying. But than again he will flip and flop like a fish in the bottom of a boat. Looks like he's going to have to CHANGE his message yet again.

The left is facing a crisis of confidence now, just like they did after we left Vietnam..Its obvious they dint know what to think. The air has gone out of the balloon. They have lost their narrative. The Iraq war is for all intents and purposes over, and we won. And it kills them.

I heard Obama compared to Nixon today, run to your base durring the primary, run to the middle for the general election. The simple fact is that after all the reading and all the news I have no idea in the world what BO would do once elected, not a friggin' clue. The message keeps changing, and changing and changing.

The message that the Democrat sends is that he is ultimately indifferent to the war’s outcome — that Iraq “distracts us from every threat we face” and thus must be speedily evacuated regardless of the consequences.

I disagree, sort of, because that's only one of the messages that Obama sends. He also said that we should keep troops in Iraq indefinitely, because Al Qaeda is there and we should fight them. He says lots of different stuff, but he certainly always looks tall and handsome when he says it.

Agreed. But I think all the constant self-reinvention is a very recent addition to his bag of tricks. If I have to predict what he'd do as president, I'm going to look to who he was before he started running for president, which remained pretty constant for decades.

I don't have the patience to sit around and find out what Obama's surrender plans will be. Why gamble? The man is obviously way out of his depth.

McCain gets it. He understands the overall significance of the War on Terror.

Obama either doesn't get it -- or (more scarily) he gets it, and wants us to lose anyway.

I can't take that chance. Either way, betting on Obama is a sucker bet.

Two possibilities with the WaPo editorial:

1. the WaPo editor is a Clitonista, and the Clintonista strikes back.

2. Editor actually spoke with a Pentagon, or State Dept analyst about
Barracks' foreign policy, and may actually have gotten scared.

I know it's not talked about much, but I really, really believe that a lot of people [read: women] find Obama sexy. It's that simple. And, I really, really believe that they're going to vote for him based on that. Like Kennedy vs. Nixon in 1960.

44 Dainn  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 10:55:25pm

Obama's policy in Iraq is completely rational. He is doing and saying whatever it takes to win the election, while trying hard to be everything to everybody in the process.

That is why we will vote for him. Change we can "believe" in. As long as we give him the old Clinton pass and expect him to be nothing more than a lying politician, we can all believe that when he is elected he will do whatever it is we think should be done.

He will too. Right?

It was the really stupid voter that wanted change that put Carter in the White House in '76.

It will be the even dumber voter that is hoping things will really change this time that will put Obama in the White House this November.

If the GOP can not hold onto forty-one or more reliable seats in the Senate, then it will not make any difference who is elected President this November.

If the DenomRats can get a hold of sixty or more seats in the Senate it will be the beginning of the end of the two party system in this country.

It is the hard left that seeks to tar all criticism of Obama with the brush of racism. Thus, it makes sense that your Dem friend makes such a foolish, racist statement.

120 Clubbeaux  Wed, Jul 16, 2008 11:47:24pm

I'm sorry, but does this "journalism" remind anybody else of the Knights Who Say “Nee?”

The Rev. Jesse Jackson used the N-word during a break in a TV interview where he criticized presidential candidate Barack Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday.

The longtime civil rights leader already came under fire this month for crude off-air comments he made against Obama in what he thought was a private conversation during a taping of a "Fox & Friends" news show.

In additional comments from that same conversation, first reported by TVNewser, Jackson is reported to have said Obama was "talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to behave."

Though a Fox spokesman confirmed the TVNewer's account to The Associated Press, the network declined to release the full transcript of the July 6 show and did not air the comments.

Jackson — who is traveling in Spain — apologized in a statement Wednesday for "hurtful words" but didn't offer specifics.

"I am deeply saddened and distressed by the pain and sorrow that I have caused as a result of my hurtful words. I apologize again to Senator Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, their children as well as to the American public," Jackson said in a written statement. "There really is no justification for my comments and I hope that the Obama family and the American public will forgive me. I also pray that we, as a nation, can move on to address the real issues that affect the American people."

A spokeswoman for Jackson's civil rights organization, Rainbow/PUSH Coalition, said she could not confirm that Jackson used the slur.

Jackson has called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and studios, to stop using the N-Word. He also urged the public to boycott purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld" after co-star Michael Richards was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club in 2006.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has joined Jackson in opposition of the word, said Wednesday he wanted to hear the comments for himself and declined to discuss Jackson specifically.

"I am against the use of the N-word by anyone and I think we must be consistent," he told The Associated Press. "We must not use the word."

The Changeling will likely avoid a large Military Town Hall Meeting. It would be the best opportunity to date to demonstrate his "Judgement to Lead".

[Link: patterico.com...]

A coalition of military groups is planning a nationally televised town-hall-style meeting with the presidential candidates near Fort Hood, Tex., the largest active-duty military installation in the country. But so far, only Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican nominee, has agreed to attend.

CBS has agreed to broadcast the meeting live from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Aug. 11. The candidates would face questions directly from an audience of 6,000 people, made up of veterans, service members and military families from the base.

Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has not agreed to participate.

"Mr. Obama sooner or later will have to tailor his Iraq strategy to that reality."

Never happen. The guy has never had to deal with reality in his life. No biz experience, no military experience, no experience. Sorry, but being a "community activist" does not count. That is la-la land. You can pretend that you have done something without ever having done it. If you had to actually practice law in front of a judge and have to dig into the facts of a business case, that might count. As it is I doubt he can count beyond 19. There are 20 toes and fingers, but he has to use one finger to count the rest of them.

-------

It would be a nice touch for the acceptance speech in the stadium (if it occurs) for all the Hellory delegates to wear jackets and at the point of the right time in the speech all stand up and turn their backs to BO and have the jackets spell out "You gotta be kidding" or something similar. Sort of a variation on the sign thing where everyone holds up their sign and have it spell "Go Tigers" or whatever. The turning their backs on him would be highly symbolic too. Hate to say it, but this guy is a moron.

The bribes include free movie tickets (whew that's one stinky auditorium) and the like. But the DNC reps will not admit that they want to cleanse the city of homeless. - no no.
The DNC is so hollywood. Fake phony, phony and fake.
Problems don't exist - they just need to be swept under the rug for appearances sake.

I would like to think this is actually the MSM waking up to the facts, but I am afraid it is much less than that - they simply have their fingers in the wind just like the politicians. So what the hell good are they if all they do is tells us whatever they think is conventional wisdom at the time?

Thankfully, there are at least two politicians who actually know that leadership does not mean finding a parade and jumping in front of it. They are John McCain and GW Bush, and in terms of principle and steadfastness in the face of enormous pressures to give up, the nod goes to GWB.

Most of the rest are simply worthless.

Historically or hysterically as the case may be, once-upon-a-time the Pope had to sit in a special chair for the viewing of his.

One of many, many reasons I do not consider the Catholic church to be Christian (not necessarily Catholic's themselves, just the church). Even if that's not true, there's plenty more that is.

re: #149 ploome hineni

..regarding Obama's speaking style, first he looks to his right, reads a phrase

then the looks to the left, and completes the sentence

then he whips his head over to the right again, and begins another thought

and then turns again to the left, to finish that sentence

all the while maintaining a certain rhythm of speaking

There is just not an audience in the middle, only the left and right. I have been pointing this out. ;)

"They nuked us. Should we nuke'em back?"

"That's the way it generally works, sir."

"Can't we try talking to them?"

"We could, but we're all dead, sir."

re: #130 mattm

can you imagine if Obama did attend.

QA: (lets say former OIF member) Sen. Obama, in a recent speech you siad that we should pullout immideatley, than in another speech you said, we need a time table, etc.... As President how would you balance your Iraq pplicy between goals and current progress.
BO: Um, well you see it is a very complex, ummm, situation and as President I would seek a policy that would satisfy the needs of the situation.

The Barackbats would go, "see he has a policy"

Added one more question

QA: (same member) Sen. Obama what is the policy?
BO: Um, well...Um... Well... Um... Wheres my waffle?

Is the Kool-Aid running out of happy sprinkles?

Obama is like the magic bullet theory in the Kennedy Assissination. He is taking more turns than Grand Prix driver....

What’s missing in our debate... What's missing is any debates!” Mr. Obama said yesterday...

Obama can't bowl....
So, scratch the bowling alley in White house basement and build a basketball court!
Brilliant!
The idiots never been to the bowling alley!
Is he aware the ceiling height needed for basketball?
Truly a legend in his own mind!
Brilliant!

Now that you've pointed this out it makes watching him all the more irritating. He must have a teleprompter on the left and one on the right - nothing in the center.

I wish all these media types and pols would stop referring to the current situation in Iraq as a war. The war part was over and done with a long time ago and guess what? We won.

The Potemkin President is suffering from closer inspection- Clinton was one as well. . .pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

As the mother of a first time voter, and as a college adjunct instructor, it is interesting and scary to see what will happen in the fall.

As a sociologist who cannot fall off the moderate/independent fence and join my brethren to the left, I am fascinated and appalled by this situation.

Some quick questions on the current state of affairs;

Why are some people so FREAKING willing to ignore all the signs of impending disaster and Barak HaSAME Obama? Do the more ardent Obama supporters think the lying and "realignment" will end with the election, if he wins?

My son, 18 years old and COMPLETELY in the Camp of 'Bama, who will sneer at the comic movies for losing the true core meanings of the series (think Fantastic 4) and call Peter Jackson to task for his take on the Two Towers, will offer a pass on the war, and not push for more concrete answers on the "how" part of change and "hope"?

I asked these question on 'Bama's My space page, and the reply dismissed my concerns as "another sad attempt from the left"

Does anyone else have that surreal feeling that I think Bob Dole articulated best. . . when he said "I cannot believe I am losing to this guy!" or some such thing. . .

182 jetziger  Thu, Jul 17, 2008 10:23:50am

America has been dumbed down to such an extent that people are taking this Allah-Akbar Hussein Obama seriously...I find it incredible. We deserve to lose are preeminence if we really are this stupid.

Obama as President would be like the crew of an 18th-century warship having the cabin boy as captain.

183 jetziger  Thu, Jul 17, 2008 10:24:17am

"Our" preeminence, sorry.

I'm sure most 18th century cabin boys would do a better job running a ship them Obamma will with America.. it's more like dragging a mermaid on board and making her captain because she looks so good. But no one speaks mermaid, you have to feel the vibes.
