RetweetUS Soldiers Want to Leave Iraq

Thu, Jul 17, 2008 at 9:42:21 am PDT

Because it’s boring. They’d rather be in Afghanistan: Quiet Iraq streets leave soldiers yearning for Afghanistan.

The relative calm is apparent in Baghdad’s Ghazaliyah neighborhood, patrolled by troops stationed at Maverick from the 1st Squadron, 75th Cavalry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Instead of facing gunfire and roadside bombs, the soldiers’ armored Humvees are chased by waving children as they weave through streets crowded with pedestrians out to shop or just to stroll.

Some of Maverick’s troops saw combat a few months ago when they helped the Iraqi army take over the Ghazaliyah office of anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr in a battle complete with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. But their days in Ghazaliyah have mostly been filled with routine patrols. The soldiers’ job is to serve as a critical presence that helps keep violence down in the mixed Sunni and Shiite neighborhood.

“Ninety-five percent of the time it is perfectly quiet in Ghazaliyah now,” said 1st Lt. Shane Smith, who leads one of the three platoons at Maverick.

Quiet can mean boredom, as Gebhart and a colleague turn in another four-hour shift in one of Maverick’s guard towers, looking over a landscape of two-story concrete buildings and green fields dotted with a few cows and goats.

To while away the time, the young soldier from Omaha, Nebraska, talks of his brother, who is fighting the Taliban in the mountains outside Kandahar city in southern Afghanistan. “He spends 20 days at a time camped out in the mountains, and the Taliban come engage them in serious firefights,” said Gebhart. “At least it sounds exciting.”

37 zombie  Thu, Jul 17, 2008 9:55:13am

Actually, this fact (and many similar facts) do put us "wingnuts" in a somewhat awkward position.

We here at LGF generally "support the war in Iraq." But many of use also realize that the war has already been won.

Furthermore, as of yesterday, Iraqi troops now control 10 out of 18 provinces in Iraq. With more due to be transferred to Iraqi control over the upcoming months.

We have so thoroughly succeeded in Iraq, so thoroughly crushed the enemy, that our incredible troops now mostly just sit around with nothing to do.

Perhaps it is indeed time to start drawing down the American occupation in Iraq. Not because the situation is hopeless, but the opposite: it's so calm, there's not much left for us to do. The country is back on its feet.

The drawdown/withdrawal of American troops should not be on some artificial Obama-esque timetable, of course, but rather as military needs dictate.

But at the rate things are going, that Pentagon-decided drawdown wouldn't be too different from Obama's surrender schedule anyway.

So, crazily, Obama is saying we should get out of Iraq within 18 months in defeat and humiliation, and I'm saying we might be able to be mostly out of Iraq in 18 months in triumph and proud success.

Either way, perhaps we should start pulling out -- leaving behind of course several bases that will undoubtedly come in handy in the future (wink wink).

Let the down-dings commence!

This is exactly what I was saying in an Obama Speech thread a couple days ago...

AND I was adding that as we draw down the troops in Iraq, we can redeploy to Afghanistan.

It's sad that both you and I (at the time) feel that making these comments deserves down-dings.

This is the reality now, we have essentially won the war on Iraq, and it is time to refocus on the wider war on terror, without forgetting that Iraq exists.

No down-dings - what you said makes sense. The problem, as I see it, is that the admin needs to do some heavy-duty PR work here, to make the distinction that you did, that we could be mostly out of Iraq in 18 months in triumph, rather than defeat. That's the point that draws the line, in my mind, between those who support the war effort, and those who don't.

They're slipping at CNN. This doesn't fit the 'we're losing the war' agenda at all, so there's no reason to even write this story. Yet here it is. Why? What does the media have to gain by portraying Iraq as calm and stable? I can't figure it out.

Unless of course the Messiah is due for a flip flop, and CNN already knows he's going to announce 'victory in Iraq.' That seems unlikely to me, since it would really send his cult members into a frothing rage, but then again, it seems almost impossible to predict Obama's next policy change.

79 nikis-knight  Thu, Jul 17, 2008 10:10:56am

re: #37 zombie

Also, don't forget, Iraq is very important, but the perception of Iraq is almost important. Americans have to believe, have to know, that we can beat these thugs if we are adaptable but dependable. That we did, and can again.
An Obama led withdrawl might stablize Iraq, but with the 'right' spin on it, might also demoralize the American people into an "another lost war" mindset.

Obama Narcissism Watch

Obama becomes a gym rat

CHICAGO (AP) - Sometimes it's hard to tell if Barack Obama is running for president of the United States or Mr. Universe.

The Democratic presidential contender exercises regularly, but over a 24-hour span this week, he took it to a new extreme.

Twice on Wednesday and again Thursday morning, Obama traveled to a lakefront apartment building near his Chicago home to work out with a friend at his gym. On Wednesday night, Obama also spent an hour at the East Bank Club, a mammoth exercise facility just north of the city's famous business Loop where he is known to play basketball.

On the former occasions, reporters accompanying Obama saw him get in and out of an SUV wearing a baseball hat, white T-shirt and black sweat pants. On the visit to the East Bank Club, Obama was dressed casually as if going out to dinner, wearing slacks, a blue blazer and flip-flops.

A distinct lack of visible sweat on the Illinois senator triggered questions about whether he was actually exercising or using the gym visits as cover for conducting vice presidential vetting or interviews.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton e-mailed a succinct, two-word answer: "Working out."

That view held credence among some of the photographers who regularly accompany Obama. They said that even when he shot hoops earlier this year with members of the University of North Carolina varsity men's basketball team, they didn't see Obama sweat.

Miracle! If you ever do see him sweat, be sure to collect the precious drops. I'm sure they will cure many diseases.

Actually, Obama was sweating during his last debate with Hillary.

(ref to my #46)

Both zombie and rlevitin (#47) assumed downdings might come. And well they might, SIMPLY because we have become so knee-jerk polarized that we can't see the obvious, which those two did.

Someone/s will have to cut thorough the polarization to the make the PR case. The Bush administration can't do it (credibly, at least, because of spin the LLL would give it.)

I'm wondering if McCain might be able to leverage it into his campaign. Properly done, it would do to Obama what Jesse J only dreamed of.

Instead of facing gunfire and roadside bombs, the soldiers’ armored Humvees are chased by waving children as they weave through streets crowded with pedestrians out to shop or just to stroll.

The horror! Happy children, crowded stores, people out shopping and strolling around - if anyone can get us out of this disaster, it is Barack Obama.

Obama said nothing of leaving once the job was complete. He only intended to show Bush was wrong, and equate Iraq to Vietnam.

It is nice to see the Iraqi people getting the freedom they deserve. It is also nice to see the left proved wrong. Again.

Terrorist ordered deported 20 years ago still lives in Brantford, Ont.

BRANTFORD, Ont. — A convicted terrorist ordered deported from Canada two decades ago is still living with his family in a modest semi-detached bungalow in Brantford, Ont.

Mahmoud Mohammad Issa Mohammad made international headlines in 1968 when he and an accomplice attacked an Israeli commercial airliner at the airport in Athens. They killed one passenger and destroyed the plane in a failed escape bid.

Nineteen years and several countries later, Mr. Mohammad entered Canada after lying about his terrorist past. Immigration Canada caught him and ordered him deported in December, 1988.

But appeal after appeal has delayed his expulsion, and there's no indication the man who describes himself as a Palestinian freedom fighter will be going anywhere soon.

WTF is wrong with my country?

Freed Lebanese prisoners vow to fight Israel

Five militants freed in a prisoner swap with Israel prayed and laid wreaths at the grave of a slain Hezbollah commander Thursday, vowing to fight Israel as supporters showered them with rice.
...
"We swear by God ... to continue on your same path and not to retreat until we achieve the same stature that God bestowed on you," said Samir Kantar, who had been the longest-held Lebanese prisoner in Israel.

He referred to Mughniyeh's "martyrdom," saying, "This is our great wish. We envy you and we will achieve it, God willing."
...
"This time yesterday, I was in the hands of the enemy. But at this moment, I am yearning more than before to confront them," Kantar said.

"Men, this stuff that some sources sling around about America wanting out of this war, not wanting to fight, is a crock of bullshit. Americans love to fight, traditionally. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle. You are here today for three reasons. First, because you are here to defend your homes and your loved ones. Second, you are here for your own self respect, because you would not want to be anywhere else. Third, you are here because you are real men and all real men like to fight. When you, here, everyone of you, were kids, you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the toughest boxer, the big league ball players, and the All-American football players. Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American."

There has never been, on the face of this planet, a more devastatingly effective fighting force than the current U.S. Military. And all this was accomplished in less than 10 years with fewer than 10k casualties.

I was on zombietime the other day, and there is a section on Nonie Darwish @ Berkley in 2005/2006.

One of the videos at the bottom features a conservative arguing with a liberal (it was a great argument to watch, absolutely fantastic)... but essentially the conservative argued that his friend was a soldier and was telling him about the great deeds that Americans were performing and the gratitude of Iraqi's. The liberal was saying he had been to Iraq, and that Iraqi's were all screaming for Saddam's return, and do "you know why?" he said, "because Saddam used to give Iraqi's FOUR HOURS of electricity per day".

No joke, that was the exact reason he cited. I wonder what he thinks today?

I highly recommend you watch the videos towards the bottom of the page.

re: #79 nikis-knight

Also, don't forget, Iraq is very important, but the perception of Iraq is almost important. Americans have to believe, have to know, that we can beat these thugs if we are adaptable but dependable. That we did, and can again.
An Obama led withdrawl might stablize Iraq, but with the 'right' spin on it, might also demoralize the American people into an "another lost war" mindset.

#150 CEQAttorney

"... That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American."

Yes, the whole point behind the Obama candidacy is to re-cast what happened in Iraq as a "lost war" for us. They succeeded in that spin in Vietnam, and I fear they will succeed this time as well.

Remember (as almost no one does) that the United States, itself, did not "lose the war" in Vietnam. Our troops were all pulled out and no longer doing battle after 1972. We basically handed the war back to the South Vietnamese. We were done -- and the war was not lost. Yes, it still continued, but by the time American troops were no longer a part of it, the war was not a defeat.

What happened is that, three years later, as an ex-post-facto kick in the groin to Nixon, the Congress in 1975 voted to stop all funding of the South Vietnamese government. At the same time, the Soviets poured more funding into the Viet Cong. And in short order, because the liberal-minded congress in 1975 betrayed the South Vietnamese, they got overran and then the war was lost. But our troops were long gone by then.

Even so, and the whole point of this comment, is that Vietnam has now gone down in history -- a history written by leftists -- as a defeat for the United States.

I suspect that whatever happens in Iraq, in the long run, the Left will spin it as a loss for the United States. And they'll do that for every war for the rest of time, as well.

The United States should be making all of its electricity with renewable and carbon-free energy in 10 years, former Vice President Al Gore said Thursday.

America's security, environmental and economic crises are all related, Al Gore said Thursday.

"The survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk," Gore said.

In a speech at Washington's Constitution Hall, Gore touched on an array of the nation's current woes, saying the economic, environmental and national security crises are all related.

"I don't remember a time in our country when so many things seemed to be going so wrong simultaneously," Gore said.

I actually derive a kind of perverse amusement from listening to the news on NPR. They use a lot of rhetorical and linguistic tricks to twist the news, but one of my favorites is this:

For argument's sake let's say the DJIA is at 11,000- 2% of 11,000 is 220.

Now if the DJIA is UP by 220 points on a given day NPR, if they report it at all, will bury the fact at the end of a segment with the quick statement "...the DOW closed up 2 percent at XXX". BUT If the DOW is DOWN by the same 220 they will SCREAM that the DOW SANK 220 POINTS!

It really is comical- our own version of Lord Haw-Haw...

Officially, how old does a car have to be to meet definition of
antique? I thought it was 50 years for cars and 100 years for
everything else, but Mr. Silhouette is behind a VW "Thing" with an
license plate from teh state that says "antique."

It may vary from state to state - some states differentiate between a "classic" car (which in PA is 25 yo - or is it 20?) & an "antique" car.

Officially, how old does a car have to be to meet definition of antique? I thought it was 50 years for cars and 100 years for everything else, but Mr. Silhouette is behind a VW "Thing" with an license plate from teh state that says "antique."

In Texas:

Antique Plates
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has two types of plates available specifically for older vehicles.

Antique plates are for vehicles at least 25 years old that are used strictly for antique exhibitions, parades, and related activities. (Occasional trips to the repair shop are permitted.)

Only one antique plate per vehicle is issued. To apply for the plate, complete the antique application form and bring it or mail it to your local county tax office. The plate cannot be personalized.

The plate is valid in five-year increments. For vehicles built before 1921, the yearly fee is $8, while it's $10 per year for vehicles manufactured after that. Local additional fees may apply. Find full information here.

Classic plates are also for vehicles that are at least 25 years old. However, vehicles with these plates may be used for routine transportation.

Complete the classic plate form to apply for the plates, and bring it or mail it to your local county tax office.

The plates carry an annual fee of $15, and may be personalized for an extra $40. However, local additional fees may apply. Find full information here.

Dear Friend,

I am Captain Charlie Harrison of the US Marine Corps (U.S.M.C.). On Monitoring and Peace –keeping mission in Baghdad-Iraq. Three days ago, we were alerted on the sudden presence of some Terrorists camping in a suburb not too far from Karbala here in Iraq. After Immediate intervention, we captured three (3) of the Terrorists; in the process of Interrogations they confessed being rebels for late Ayman al-Zawahiri and took us to a cave in Karbala, which served as their camp.

Here we recovered several several Ammunitions including A Metallic Box to my amazement contains some US Dollars amounting to ($18.2M) Eighteen Million Two Hundred Thousand U.S.dollars After I and two of my junior intelligent officers checked them.
I however instructed them to keep this in high secrecy.

Every arrangement to get this box containing the money moved out of Baghdad has been concluded by me. There is absolutely no risk involve. I am therefore seeking for your reliable assistance to receive, safeguard this money for me till am done with my assignment here in Iraq. I assure and promise to give you 15% of this fund for your honesty and assistance in safeguarding it.

I have concluded arrangement with the Red Cross Officer I met here in Baghdad to get the Box moved out of Iraq to your destination. All you have to do now is to send to me immediately your full contact details such as your full name, your residential address including you private phone number to enable him meet with you and get it delivered to you. Remember there is not going to be any form of trace therefore you have nothing to be afraid of. It is absolutely risk free. Please assure me of keeping this transaction a topmost secret to protect my job with the US Monitoring and Peace-Keeping mission.

This is a matter of urgency as you can see, therefore if you can be trusted; get back to me for immediate action via my private mail box. (charlieharrison_1@yahoo.fr)

Sincere Regards,
Capt. Charlie Harrison

This came about AFTER the insurgents were hunted down and kicked out of their area. The people left, most of them, just wanted to get on with their lives. The insurgents were small in number but held sway, by terror, over many.

If our friend hadn't written to me, and I relied on the Main Stream Media, I would never have known any of this.

I'll give it one more month until Afghanistan is morphed into the "bad" war.

Victory in BOTH theaters would be unconscionable to the left.

So instead of left wing traitors doing 'news' stories of PTSD soldiers, will they now do stories on PICPD (Post Iraqi Couch Potato Disorder).
Also funny how this story doesn't fit in with the left's narrative of Iraq and/or Afghanistan being unpopular wars. Given that in Vietnam there were, if the press were to be believed, desertions, protests by soldiers, low reenlistment rates, resentments of soldier being in combat, ergo the war was unpopular with both soldiers and the left wingers marching in the streets. But here, there isn't alot of marching in the streets at home, reenlistment rates are the highest for any war, and certainly for any voluntary armed forces, and soldiers desire to go to another arena of combat in order to keep the fight to the enemy and to add new experience and new fields of patriotism to their CVs.
So how can this be an unpopular war if the field soldiers (grunts) have such enthusiam and purpose in it? Shouldn't we be listening to them, as they have the best practical knowledge? It's what the libs told us civvies during vietnam, listen to the soldiers (of course they meant the treacherous Carries), but no matter, now let's listen now as well to our really inspiring and brave forces.

First: Never tell the Gunny that you're bored or have nothing to do.
When your command asks how your doing '... this fine morning.' (Best reply) "Just great, I woke up breathing and no one is shooting at me."

This must doubly confuse the left.

Not only do soldiers wish to fight evil, they wish to do something productive instead of just standing around idly accomplishing little.

Inconceivable!

I do not think that word means what you think it means

Yep.
Future hubby was disappointed to know he'll be going to Iraq and pretty much doing nothing but being bored and escorting convoys. The sight of a few Apaches tends to prevent violence over there.

It's great to know we'll be separated for so long so he can keep safe areas even safer.

Jesus Christ. Can you imagine the General in today's world?
He'd beat the crap out of Obama then look at McCain and say "What the [bleep] [bleep] [bleep] hell are you doing?"
Patton isn't dead - he's waiting.

Patton was a strong believer in reincarnation. And while I'd like to think that perhaps Petraeus is the return of that wonderful son of a b***, I haven't seen Petraeus execute nearly enough jihadis to think he could be Patton all over again.

But we do have a new crop of amazing leathernecks, jarheads, swabbies and bus drivers serving today. I suspect hes there now, because I know damn well that he'd challenge God to a duel if he tried to reincarnate him as something other than an American.
