Dan Quayle quotes tend to have that effect on people.

I think Hitler was one of THE most charismatic public speakers of the 20th century. Sure, he was evil, but there was logic in his evil and he managed to sell his ideas effectively to the German people. Obama is charismatic, but once you get him away from the teleprompter, he babbles. And once he starts babbling (wasn't there an unscripted bit where he said "um" 143 times in something like 10 minutes?) his sales ability is almost nil.

What has he done? Just don't know - all I know that he has done is a) got elected to the US Senate (no small feat, there) b) may have won the Dem Party's nomination for President and c) apparently, destroyed all of his paperwork from his days in the Illinois Senate.

I was recently on a tour of Latin America, and the only regret I have was that I didn’t study Latin harder in school so I could converse with those people.

Dan Quayle

Sorry, Quayle never said that.

He did however say:

• One word sums up probably the responsibility of any vice president, and that one word is 'to be prepared.'
• Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things.
• I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future.
• The future will be better tomorrow.
• People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history.
• I stand by all the misstatements that I've made.
• I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican.

Based on file footage (and I don't speak German) Hitler made Obama look like a piker when it came to Charisma and charismatic public speaking.

Turning off the sound -- or not being able to translate well -- reveals so much more. You can watch Hitlers eyes scan the listeners. He revels in their adulation and moves his body toward them.

Mussolini is animated, almost frantic. He works his crowd into a frenzy.

I hate to overuse the Hitler meme, but Obama's technique is far more similar to Hitler's than Mussolini's. But only on script. In one-on-one interviews, when Obama's nervous, he falls apart. When he's cocky, he overspeaks -- when nervous, he babbles.

As an adult, I have a hard time listening to Obama. He seems to hold no solid position, and his speeches seem to be filled with overblown 'hope and change' rhetoric that do nothing but make the willing feel good about themselves. All style and no substance. After his first ten minutes in the spotlight, his supposed style also became tedious to me.

In WWII, the leaders had plans. Some were very unpleasant plans, but they were fully formed plans that they did indeed manage to articulate without using a teleprompter. Or a producer whispering answers to them into their in-ear monitor.

Where are these democrats coming from? It's like they all lost their marbles! Or maybe I'm living in the mirror universe?

Man is in a horrible accident. Family rushes him to the hospital and anxiously awaits news. Finally the surgeon comes out, sorrowfully tells the family that despite all his efforts the gentleman is brain-dead, but the heart still beats.

The wife starts wailing in agony, "My God, we've never had a Democrat in the family before!"

re: #90 shibumi

As an adult, I have a hard time listening to Obama. He seems to hold no solid position, and his speeches seem to be filled with overblown 'hope and change' rhetoric that do nothing but make the willing feel good about themselves. All style and no substance. After his first ten minutes in the spotlight, his supposed style also became tedious to me.

In WWII, the leaders had plans. Some were very unpleasant plans, but they were fully formed plans that they did indeed manage to articulate without using a teleprompter. Or a producer whispering answers to them into their in-ear monitor.

I have the same reaction. He seems like such a light-weight. Other "grown-ups," though, seem entranced by him. I can't figure it out.

re: #75 hermeneutics

Turning off the sound -- or not being able to translate well -- reveals so much more. You can watch Hitlers eyes scan the listeners. He revels in their adulation and moves his body toward them.

Mussolini is animated, almost frantic. He works his crowd into a frenzy.

I hate to overuse the Hitler meme, but Obama's technique is far more similar to Hitler's than Mussolini's. But only on script. In one-on-one interviews, when Obama's nervous, he falls apart. When he's cocky, he overspeaks -- when nervous, he babbles.

I've seen much more of Hitler than JFK. It seems to me that Obama can only hold up on script- both Hitler and (I think) JFK both seemed to be able to speak coherently when they were called upon to be extemporaneous. Obama, not so much. And that's a huge problem I think. Huge.

re: #44 shibumi

I think Hitler was one of THE most charismatic public speakers of the 20th century. Sure, he was evil, but there was logic in his evil and he managed to sell his ideas effectively to the German people. Obama is charismatic, but once you get him away from the teleprompter, he babbles. And once he starts babbling (wasn't there an unscripted bit where he said "um" 143 times in something like 10 minutes?) his sales ability is almost nil.

Isn't that all those "ums" kinda like Al Pacino in Scarface? Imagine Obama replacing all his "ums" with that!

He was George Bush Sr.'s Vice President.

To be fair, I always got the impression that he was just a poor public speaker, not an idiot.

But good heavens, some of the things that came out of that man's mouth...

No, Quayle was, and is, an idiot. During the '88 campaign, his handlers had to sit him down and get him to tone down the act -- Bush Sr. gave us more than one highly visible wince at some of the things ol' Danny-Boy did.

Besides, remember Deadeye Dan's loud moral preaching about the prospect of a fictional character on TV (Murphy Brown) having an illegitimate child?

Bush Sr. was miscast a bit as president. Once he got the job, he didn't seem to know what to do with it. I think that's a major contributor to Clinton's win in '92.

Well, that, and GHWB's.... unfortunate.... choice of a running mate.

Multiculturalism? Using it to Fracture the American Society?

Multiculturalism - What is this? Have you a clue? I don't know about you but I am an American. I am an American First, Second and Last.
I am not an:
African - American,
Indian (India)- American
Italian - American,
Irish - American,
Czech - American,
French - American,
Scottish - American,
Mexican - American,
Cuban - American,
Or any other type of hyphenated American.
Most of America or American are like me a damn heinz 57 or mutt. I am a product of the American melting pot. Most children second or third generation are the same. If you are not willing to assimilate why are you here? Why did you fight to get here? What is the use of being here? Why did you not stay where you came from if you do not want to be here to be one hundred percent here.

I am tired of having to be culturally correct. I am an American and proud to be one. If you do not appreciate the values of American then why did you come here? Is it not time for us MUTTS to stand up and say " Hey, We are proud to be called just AMERICANS." I am not wanting to incite hate toward any others but it is time that we stand and say ASSIMILATE OR GO HOME, YOU CAME TO AMERICA TO BE AN AMERICAN SO BE ONE.

I am tired of having to feel like a second class citizen in my own country.

I just had an epiphany today......

I can't completely shake the feeling that this whole election is staged by some of the Hollywood studios, since it seems to be incorporating storylines from nearly every blame-America-First Hollywood movie from the last 10 years. We have Obama as the protagnist, a supposedly intelligent and articulate man of mixed background inspiring millions with a message of hope and change- ready to show us fat, stupid, indifferent, bitter and petulant Americans the error of our ways. We're polluting the earth and Americans are hated the world over, but he can change this! People are rooting him from the Left Bank to the West Bank.
Opposing him is the stock crusty old white guy with an extensive military background (and the sinister military-industrial complex ties by extention) who just doesn't have a clue or is just evil. Under him, the CIA and US military will continue running missions like they did in Syriana, Shooter or The Seige (i.e. arbitrarily detaining/killing/opressing brown people) with only a few brave souls (Micheal Pena in Shooter or Ryan Philippe in Stop Loss standing up against all this blatant injustice....

Seriously....it's like nearly every Hollywood film dealing with the military or 21st century US foreign policy has been trying to prepare us for the coming of the Obamessiah....

re: #137 Thorfin

Teddy Roosevelt got it right the first time.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all.
This is just as true of the man who puts “native” before the hyphen as of the man who puts German or Irish or English or French before the hyphen. Americanism is a matter of the spirit and of the soul. Our allegiance must be purely to the United States. We must unsparingly condemn any man who holds any other allegiance.
But if he is heartily and singly loyal to this Republic, then no matter where he was born, he is just as good an American as any one else.

Go read the rest. It's a keeper.

re: #40 hermeneutics

Does anyone want to talk about the recent Ras poll of Nevada? Obama leads 47% to McCain's 45%.

This is a must win state. What is happening?

What's happening is that a lot of otherwise perspicacious people such as yourself are taking these slanted polls seriously.

Do not believe any polls between now and November 3. They ALL have an agenda --- I don't care what the reputation of the polling company is. And even when they don't have an agenda, one gets the "Clever Hans" syndrome and respondents sometimes end up answering the way they think the young, college-age pollsters want them to answer.

Remember that all the polls (with a single exception) had Kerry beating Bush by an average of 4%, on the last day of the campaign.

And lastly, the purpose of these slanted polls is to make everyone think an Obama victory is inevitable, but just as in 2004 I think they will end up having the reverse effect: they will make Democrats feel complacent, and will spur Republicans to greater effort -- only furthering McCain's (unseen) lead.

First of all, Dr. Gonzales is at ISU, not U of I. Secondly, he was non-tenured. To get tenure he has to earn it, and his department determined it would not be good to give him tenure because (1) the quantity of his research was declining, and (2) he failed to get grants. The last one is the kicker or course, for without the $ coming in there will be no research for not only him but also for any graduate students.

Lets start a good fight out there tonight. What do you Lizards think?

I believe Teddy Roosevelt had something to say about that...Wish Ih ad his quote handy....

I still think, though, that Obama should be polling higher than he is. Something tells me that his campaign bus might have a flat or two from all the former friends he's thrown under it.

Does anyone want to talk about the recent Ras poll of Nevada? Obama leads 47% to McCain's 45%.

This is a must win state. What is happening?

Don't be so concerned. I lie to political pollsters every time, just to screw with them. I've sounded so pro-Democrat that I now get mail from the chumps.

I wish everyone would. I these political types decided that polling no longer works, maybe they'd actually have to articulate their own views. And if that happened maybe we'd see a different political class.

re: #83 Racer X

Boy, this guy just does not get it. Bush merely lifts the ban and oil drops $9.

Actually, what I'm struck by is something non-Lefties simply don't get, regarding the whole energy situation. What you need to recognize is that - unlike the vast majority of the population - the Left does not consider incredibly high oil prices to be a bad thing!

Normal people - even hard-core Dems with Left-leaning ideas - consider it so obvious that the problem is the high price, that they don't consider the fact that not everybody thinks that way. Even the Left's supporters don't realize just how screwed up the Left is.

Remember how a socialist thinks:
1) It's totally immoral that the US uses a disproportionate amount of oil. (High oil prices work toward "fixing" that, and using our own oil would make "solving the problem" that much harder).
2) Capitalist corporations are the enemy. The largest corporations (oil companies) making more money (via the drilling) helps their worst enemy.
3) Our industry uses oil to produce vast wealth. But the socialist believes this is bad, since the rest of the world is not as wealthy as we are. More oil for us means more so-called "inequality".
4) The transportation industry must be nationalized. In other words, they want as many people as possible riding the bus. That way, people are dependent on them for their very livelihood (getting to work) and sustenance (getting to the grocery store). A people with individually-owned cars who can drive wherever they want are a free people, and that doesn't help socialism.

If you really listen to what they say, the leading Democrats - including Obama - have no interest at all in the price of oil coming down, or in people being able to afford having and fueling personal vehicles. They only talk about "conservation". If the public ever figures out that this means "tough shit - it's about time you slobs started riding the bus" the Dems would be out of business in a heartbeat. Why haven't the Republicans made use of this!?!

So, to summarize, Al Gore "gets it" just fine - it's the public (and even most LGF-ers, I think) who don't "get" him!

re: #239 zombie

What's happening is that a lot of otherwise perspicacious people such as yourself are taking these slanted polls seriously.

I'm a poll addict, Zombie. I need therapy.

Seriously, I agree that pollsters oversample Democrats at this point in the election cycle but its fun to re-jigger the numbers to a more correct partisan balance. Not all states publish their R-D-I breakdown, but many do. If I can get the info that undergirds the polls, particularly the partisan breakdown, and compare it to the state registration numbers, then I can estimate a real MOE.

Thinking of it, here, as a serious game. Still, fun.

Okay, I'm slow. I don't get it. What is CTHULHU? Why evil?

It's a story by H.P. Lovecraft: The Call of Cthulhu.

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

It gets better. Go read the whole thing... late at night... with all the lights off.

re: #273 George Slivers

You couldn't even get his University affiliation correct and you expect us to believe the rest of what you say?

Gonzales' research output had been declining since he left his post-doc position. Furthermore, it was he who submitted his own ("ID" relevant) book for evidence as fitness for tenure, otherwise it would not have even been a subject. Finally about the funding, you are incorrect. When a professor gets tenured they have essentially a lifetime job, and before that is granted the department authorities have to believe the eligible professor will carry his weight in the department, and that means respect among his peers across the field. Anyone who can't get funding sources to believe in their proposals will not be able to hold up their responsibilities in a position like Dr. Gonzales desired.

Furthermore, you've shown in this blog entry more than enough evidence of being a troll of the worst kind - ignorant. If you actually knew this stuff you could at least troll with skill.

Your claims about DI getting emails is without merit - the intra-department and inter-department proceedings have already been discussed, as in the DSM Register piece. Dr. Gonzales has recourse at ISU, but it will not go anywhere because everything really is out in the light of day.

I'm over it. No Yaz, no Pudge, no Doerr in the pregame ceremony or parade leading up to the All-Star game? Yankees fans spitting and swearing at Papelbon and his wife? The near riot, comeplete with the NYPD taking the field in riot gear- that broke out after A-Rod's infamous glove-slap in the 2004 ALCS? The fact that the toilet Yankee stadium was included in 1000 Places to See Before You Die but Wrigley and Fenway were completely blown off? Ignorant, bandwagon-hopping Yankees fans going on and on about their 26 rings and treating the 2004 ALCS as well as the 2004 and 2007 World Series like it was old news? What's there to miss? I've shown that structure in the Bronx more reverence than most Yankee fans have shown Fenway Park

The NY tabloids can print as many 'Papelbum' or 'JD Spew' covers as they want but until they hold some sort of ceremony honoring THE GREATEST COMEBACK IN ALL OF BASEBALL, Yankee stadium hasn't been fully and properly honored.

My vulgar friend,

If you follow the thread, I was trying to challenge the point that there are no churches or synagogue in islamic countries. I did not deny that they were not persecuted.

Translation: "did deny" that they "were persecuted"

I was thinking about pre-80's Yankee. Guidry, Jackson..and earlier. I have no great love for 'em. But the tradition is to be honored and some memories are to be cherished.

Fenway and Wrigley will be all that's left of the great old yards--and their end will come, too. It's the passing of the epoch that's bittersweet.

Very cool, Syrah. I'm honored to know you ... and pick your brain.

There are oodles of us -- perhaps about five percent, maybe more -- who don't have land lines. For email and the Internet I have satellite wifi that goes with me everywhere in the universe; for a telephone I exclusively use cell-phones.

I'm not alone. I travel constantly for about five months a year, then settle down for seven months. During my happy five months, I interview and talk to many, many people. Sometimes I'll go to those big parkinglot-like RV places and talk to retirees. The idea that older people are not technologically savvy is a myth -- these guys have expensive, very capable set-ups in their RVs. Like me, many are completely wireless with wifi, phone and tv coming from a satellite.

Just thought you'd want to know.

Before the Islamic conquest?

Well, let's just say that I hadn't learned much of anything about Islam yet.

Well, OK I'll say more. It was back before GPS was a household word, and my co-workers had to wait until certain times of the day to test our GPS-using stuff because there were only just so many satellites up there to use at that time. Perhaps the most significant thing I ever did was to do some of the first engineering work to put GPS on the Tomahawk. It was exciting those few days of the Iraq War when it sounded like we may have successfully used those things to nail Saddam, himself. It was a real bummer how that didn't quite work out.

Oh, and I was late getting back to work after lunch once because it was next to the airport, and a guy named "President Reagan" had some sort of political stop in town - so they closed down the roads for about an hour.

Anyway, I guess our Celebrity of the Day was in KC, not St Louis (which also has a Union Station, and is in MO). I only got out there a couple of times.

That is interesting to know.

We are finding that it is the young people, those who are under thirty, and the more so the younger they get, who tend away from having landlines.

The mobile retirees are an interesting issue. We will have to take a look at that.

We are finding landlines to be less and less productive over time. Cellphones are very unproductive at present, but they are improving.

Cellphones are a bit of a bear. It is much more difficult to manage the sample. Not only are there legal problems, but cellphone users have a much more proprietary attitude about their cellphones.

We know that we will hit a tipping point where landlines will rather abruptly become pretty useless. We think we are seeing some early signs of that now but it is too hard to tell definitively without more data.

Cellphones are the future, whether we like it or not.

Dhimmism alive and kicking in Britain

A panel of Islamic scholars to give advice on modern living is to be introduced as part of a Government scheme to counter extremism.

This is crazy. Islam is extremism.

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

The board is bound to be controversial among young Muslims partly because of its state backing but also because only certain scholars are qualified to give Islamic rulings or "fatwas" which normally emanate from Saudi Arabia.

While imams regularly give advice about what is "halal" [permitted] or "haram" [forbidden] their authority is secondary to the sheikhs of the Middle East.

The board is designed to discourage rulings which allow the beating of wives, or compel women to cover their faces.

They would also help young people with issues such as when they can mix with the opposite sex and whether it is permissible to serve in the armed forces.

In other words the government is funding a fifth column. The government are our traitors.

PS: what happened to the box where you can directly message Charles from the front page?

another issue is that cell phones, unlike land lines, don't give you any idea where the person is located....... my niece lives here in Lost Angels, but according to her cell, she's in GA. my cell tells you i'm in Central LA, but i'm a Valley dude.... even billing addys don't help, especially since the telcos are trying to wean customers off of paper, for all the obvious reasons.

Oh, and my grammar and spelling were perfect too. And it would have cured gout. And brought sexy back, for real this time.

Just wish I could remember what it was I almost to posted.

re: #403 hermeneutics

I have to admit that I lied when I was called. Terribly. And I'd probably lie again. I don't know why I lied to the pollster except that I felt the call was invasive and manipulative, that the pollster was trying to influence me and suck information out of me.

I doubt I'm alone.

If you asked me, in a cell phone interview, where I was from, I'd probably lie.

Sorry, but true.

i just tell them "Lost Angels"..............

another issue is that cell phones, unlike land lines, don't give you any idea where the person is located.......

So that whole GPS thing in my cell phone is a load of crock? Thank you Lord.

If you visit American city, you will find it very pretty, but there's two things you must beware: don't drink the water and don't breathe the air!

different issue: unless i'm wildly confused, the polling people don't access the GPS data.

/now i have to go read the -10 on my phone.....

Iran nuclear: Focus - Supreme Leader closes ranks with hardline President

Rome, 17 July (AKI) - (by Ahmad Rafat) - Little more than 24 hours ahead of talks on Iran's nuclear programme taking place on Saturday in Geneva, the country's Supreme Leader has declared his support for hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's anti-US stance.
[...]
Khamenei's move appears to have been prompted by US President George W. Bush's decision to send the second most senior State Department official, William Burns, to Geneva for the nuclear talks.
[...]
Khamenei 's reaction to the US move shows how ill-prepared the Iranian leadership is for direct negotiations with the US, some Iranian observers have noted.

The Iranian leadership fears the new US strategy of sending Wiliam Burns to Geneva and its plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Tehran," said an Iranian diplomat, speaking on condition of anonimity.

"It is afraid this could be a much more serious threat to Iran's survival than a possible airstrike against our military and nuclear installations," the unnamed diplomat added.
[...]
"Radical circles close to the Iranian leadership fear Washington's diplomatic opening could create the conditions for a bloodless revolution and revive the Iranian reformist movement," the diplomat concluded.

And speaking of that reformist movement:
Iran: Campaign calling for women's equality goes global

Rome, 17 July (AKI) - A year-long campaign by Iranian women calling for greater equality in Iran has gone international.
[...]
In the past 12 months, about 60 activists in the 'One Million Signatures Campaign' have been arrested, put on trial and sentenced to jail terms ranging from two to six months as well as public floggings.

In many of the cases, the sentences have been suspended.

Among the activists currently in prison are two Kurdish students, Ronak Saffarzadeh and Hana Abdi.

They have an information slideshow too:
