AP Snuff Film Photographer Detained

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 5:38:45 pm PDT

That Associated Press photographer who tagged along with the Taliban on a mission to slaughter two helpless women, and took photos and video as they were murdered, was detained briefly by Afghan authorities and has issued a series of ludicrous excuses. It sounds very much like this guy was coached by AP’s lawyers: Photographer Detained After Filming Taliban Execution of Two Women in Afghanistan.

Naikzad said he has no ties with the Taliban, and he gave the following account of why and how he became witness to the executions.

He said the Taliban issued a press statement calling all media outlets in the province of Ghazni, which has a large Taliban presence, to cover them “carrying out the Shariah” on a few burglars in their custody. Naikzad said he believed the Taliban would be cutting off the limbs of their prisoners, according to strict Islamic law.

He said he and other journalists were reluctant to go because of security concerns, but that an unknown person who identified himself as a member of the Taliban contacted him directly on his cell phone and assured him of his safety.

“We talked for about five minutes on the phone, and he said my safety was absolutely guaranteed,” Naikzad explained.

He said he checked with the Kabul office of the Associated Press, for which he works as a stringer, and then set off around sunset on his motorbike to a village on the outskirts of Ghazni City, only to find that no other journalist was there.

That, he said, was when he learned it was two women — and not burglars — whom the Taliban had arrested, and that they had been charged with running a prostitution ring for coalition soldiers and local men.

Naikzad interviewed and filmed the Taliban, who said on tape that the two women “took the pure girls and women” and “indulged them in immoral acts.”

After the interview, he said, the Taliban picked up the two burqa-clad women from a house, put them in a white Toyota Corolla and drove off to a different location.

Naikzad said he followed the Corolla on his bike, with a Taliban car following him. About a half-hour later, he said, they stopped near Arzo village, close to the Ghazni-Paktika highway, on the outskirts of the province.

The women — one of whom appeared to be carrying a shopping bag — were then taken out of the car and told they would be executed.

Naikzad said he tried to persuade the Taliban not to carry out the executions. “I told one of the Taliban, ‘These are women, they are harmless. Why would you want to kill them?’ But they didn’t listen to me.”

When his pleas went unheeded, he said, he asked the Taliban if he could film the execution.

Disgusting.

The AP is still actively involved in spreading terrorist films.

Firm action must be taken against so called “stringers” who are basically accomplices in brutal murder.

"The Taliban then continued with their day by arresting and torturing people for selling alcohol, showing an elbow, having clean-shaven faces (including the men), playing western music, and failing to attend mosque to learn of the pure goodnees of Islamic doctrine", said Naikzad.

But the camera did not remain stationary. The videotape shows that it moved from left to right, apparently to capture the two executioners.
“I was standing near the bike, so my body may have touched the camera,” Naikzad said, explaining the movement of the camera. He stumbled slightly and added, “I myself nudged the camera a little bit.”

That's one well-balanced bike, or camera.

Two years in Saudi Arabia, trying to design Sharia-compliant HOSPITALS that had to have Armed Guard Stations to keep marauding men OUT of the women-children in-patient wards taught me a LOT about the negative outcome of years of gender apartheid...

Dependent women in demure, single-piece swimming suits attracted HUNDREDS OF Saudi men, who would hang by one hand on the cyclone fencing and masturbate with the other... in 5 weeks, there were so many men on the fence that it crumpled beneath the weight, so the government scolded THE FOREIGN WOMEN!

If he voluntarily gives up all information on what, who, where and how it all took place so that all authorities are convinced he is transparently telling all he knows; if he can convincingly show that he was there unwillingly, I might give him a pass on the whole thing. Personally, I think this form of "religious behavior" is a crime that should be punished, regardless of who does it. I think that those who condone or abet it are equally guilty.

He is a rat bastard.

The AP are as well.

They are not just no better than the terrorists, imho. They are worse - they enjoy the freedoms of the West, while snapping pics of the downtrodden of the ME being shot. Then they go have java at the Serena.

From the article:

“If I have photographed Taliban casualties, I have also photographed American casualties. I have been balanced in my journalism,” he said.

He's been balanced in his portrayal of dead people.
This doesn't really seem like the kind of job any rational, sane, caring person would want to have.

I'd still like to know who the people at AP were who wrote and approved the caption that appeared under the first photo explaining that the women were simply chatting before being executed.

I'm still wondering that, too. And I'm still anxiously awaiting a response from the AP, who I asked that very question in an email to their "contact" on the day Charles first posted those photos.

Weren't these women murdered at night? Then he returned in the morning? This caption states the Taliban exercised before they executed the two women. It is daytime on this photo:

I noticed that too. Looks to me like he may have been with them for a couple of days - or maybe they exercised BEFORE they picked up the women . . . but it didn't look right to me, either.

Again, this is not adding up. In this photo, the AP says they are posing before they execute:

That is the point. He is guilty as an accomplice if he does not give a full and open account of what happened. If a newspaper reporter happened to be in the wrong car at the wrong time, that's no crime. If he failed to be open and forthcoming about what he saw, then he is an accomplice.

The AP used terms like "arrested" and "charged" for this execution. So does the AP believe the two girls were given due process rights?

I thought the shopping bag was strange when I first saw this picture but now its purpose is clear to me. The Taliban wanted people to believe that they really were prostitutes so they handed the girls cosmetics to frame them. I have a feeling that the girls may have really been teachers. The Taliban have a habit of threatening them for educating girls.

"dogg" -

The concept of "Due Process" has become more elastic over the years, at first there was only "Procedural Due Process" - which is to say - Notice and a Hearing. Since then, we have adopted the idea of "Substantive Due Process" - an idea more in line with "Fundamentally Fair" proceedings. The Taliban have, arguably, gotten the first part right. As to the second,
"FUGGEDABOUTIT!"

I totally agree that the "cosmetics" were planted. Did you notice the different photos of the handbags and yellow plastic bag? In both photos, the women are already dead. One photo has only the handbag and yellow plastic bag on the ground, and another photo has a brown purse with the "cosmetics" and other items scattered on the ground. The handbags were obviously posed, so their contents could be photographed. All photos are taken by Naikzad.

I didn't look at the bags in that much detail but the extra stuff you spotted is interesting. It's just sad no one in the media will ask such questions. In case no one mentioned...

The whole idea of the Taliban punishing "prostitutes" (and I don't trust them to be telling any truth here) is disgusting, without even considering the lot of these particular victims of the Taliban and without broaching the subject of prostitution as a crime and punishment of it as a crime.

As a consequence of the Taliban banning women from working, MANY women were confronted with the choice of prostitution or starving. Begging and selling one's body were the only choices for women without a male in the home or family to give them money.

123 connertown  Fri, Jul 18, 2008 9:40:04pm

Here's a more telling quote from the bastard:

"But Naikzad denied any ties with the terrorists and said he has given equal coverage to the different sides in conflict in the province.

“If I have photographed Taliban casualties, I have also photographed American casualties. I have been balanced in my journalism,” he said."

Sounds like a good candidate for the AP to me. Piss be upon them.

At least these civilians were given a trial by their peers. Unlike us filthy Americans who deny rights to enemy combatants.

*the publics' right to know*
the cry of the sinner

So many things don't tie up with his explanation.
He participated in a publicity exercise with the enemy
They had his cell phone number
He was prepared to take their word as to his safety (stupid or had he dealt with the man before)
Why would he want pictures of people having body parts chopped off - surely there are plenty of those.
The womens' body language is wrong. If they knew they were going to be killed they would have been huddled together and comforting one another. I think they picked up 2 women gave one the yellow bag and told them to pose, you don't say no to the Taliban.
There is no evidence that they even worked at the US base. If they did the accusation that the US Military keep brothels on base for the use of personnel is laughable.
The picture of the dead women don't show that they were shot with that canon on a tripod. Probably an AK. The fact that one is facing the camera so you can see the blood and the other pointing away in a curled up posture with no sign of blood on the back of her burka (or the other woman) doesn't make sense, surely a 7.62 bullet hitting you at close quarters would be a thro and thro. Weird.

That's just for starters.
Disgusting

"Executed?" Really?

I would have gone with "lynched," "assassinated," "murdered in cold blood," or something along those lines. Executed implies some sort of due process, or whatever its equivalent is (or isn't) in Islamic parts of the world.

These ladies were murdered kidnap victims, not executed criminals. The AP is way out of line...AGAIN.
