Onion Zings Media for Obama Coverage

Fri, Jul 18, 2008 at 9:45:35 pm PDT

I know I posted an overnight thread already, but this is too good to pass up: ’Time’ Publishes Definitive Obama Puff Piece.

NEW YORK—Hailed by media critics as the fluffiest, most toothless, and softest-hitting coverage of the presidential candidate to date, a story in this week’s Time magazine is being called the definitive Barack Obama puff piece.

“No news publication has dared to barely scratch the surface like this before,” columnist and campaign reporter Michael King wrote in The Washington Post Tuesday. “This profile sets a benchmark for mindless filler by which all other features about Sen. Obama will now be judged. Just impressive puff-journalism all around.”

The 24-page profile, entitled “Boogyin’ With Barack,” hit newsstands Monday and contains photos of the candidate as a baby, graduating from Columbia University, standing and laughing, holding hands with his wife and best friend, Michelle, greeting a crowd of blue-collar autoworkers, eating breakfast with diner patrons, and staring pensively out of an airplane window while a pen and legal pad rest comfortably on his lowered tray table.

According to political analysts, the Time piece features the most lack-of-depth reporting on Obama ever published, and for the first time reveals a number of inconsequential truths about the candidate, including how he keeps in shape on the campaign trail, and which historical figures the presidential hopeful would choose to have dinner with.

“The sheer breadth of fluff in this story is something to be marveled at,” New York Times Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet said.

The Onion is ahead of the curve. It's too much to hope that they'll get some traction, isn't it?

He's unelectable. I think most of the MOR voters, while eager to vote for a black candidate, will consider strongly the issues raised from late-August through November and go with McCain for the certainty he brings to the table.

11 solomonpanting  Fri, Jul 18, 2008 9:57:47pm
Time managing editor Rich Stengel said he was proud of the Obama puff piece, and that he hoped it would help to redefine the boundaries of journalistic drivel.

Sorry. That line has already been breached.

Actually, they might.

17 jcw46  Fri, Jul 18, 2008 10:00:59pm

I went to that from HA and thought it was an actual article. I got to the bottom and started to think "this is too good to be true - they're actually zinging the MSM about being in the tank for the O". The Onion logo is very understated and I missed it. Hah what a hoot! Gotta love the Onion.

18 Paul Green  Fri, Jul 18, 2008 10:01:04pm

After reading the interview Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner gave Obama, I had only one question for this "journalist":

Did you spit or swallow?

Yes, but do you think you'll ever get your firearms back?
Or truly get rid of the "human rights" PC inquisitors?
Or have a military that's larger than the NYPD?

The US (and the world) still hasn't recovered from the Carter administration.

20 HelloDare  Fri, Jul 18, 2008 10:04:57pm

We were walking through the airport a couple of weeks ago and my husband, who really doesn't pay much attention to politics, asked "Does Barack Obama have his own TV channel?"

Even those who don't care have noticed the absurdity.

Yes, I'm afraid between his upcoming rock n' roll celebrity tour and the visions of sugar plums in the eyes of the MSM, this will not get much traction.

Indeed. The left does a lot of permanent damage.

I have a friend who thinks it would be good in the long run if Obama got elected. The country would "learn its lesson" and turn to conservatism, just as they did after Carter.

An Internet Fraud: Barack Obama is not an American citizen

Over the years, many statements have been falsely attributed to me, but this is the first year in which a whole column has been made up and circulated in a chain letter on the Internet, claiming that I wrote it.

Letters, phone calls and e-mails from readers around the country have asked me if I wrote a column saying that Barack Obama is not an American citizen. The answer is "No."

To constructively rebut your last point, the MSM did, in effect, choose both of the two major parties' presumptive candidates...

And I must say, I'm watching McCain on Conan right now, and the more I see of him, the more I like him. I may not agree with him on some policy points, but he definitely seems to pass the "beer" test.

No, a line from the album "Blows Against the Empire"
Paul Kanter, Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia and other hippies did this in 1970, it is a theme album in which a bunch of hippies hijack a starship "carry seven thousand people past the Sun; our babes will wander naked through the cities of the universe"
If aliens heard this, they have slapped such a blockade around Earth.

I admit, I kind of like the album, but then I like some other dumb stuff too. I don't subscribe to the idea; hippies need to be left behind on Earth or quarantined, not allowed to stink up the universe.

I guess that my joke about every new section of martial arts being "Welcome to Hell, here's your accordion" doesn't make you laugh?

The other day I went to a bad part of Denver, becuase I needed some repairs done on my accordion. And there's only one old guy here in town that works on them.

So, I put the accordion in the back of my car and drove over there. It was such a seedy part of town, and I had never even been in this guys shop before, so when I got there, I left my accordion in the car, just to be safe, and went into the shop to make sure that it was the right place.

Well, the old guy was there and he said that it wasn't a good idea that I left the accordion out in the car. So I went out to get it. He was right. My window was smashed and I looked into the car.

There were TWO accordions on my back seat.

Well, I dreamed I saw the knights
In armor coming,
Saying something about a queen.
There were peasants singing and
Drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree.
There was a fanfare blowing
To the sun
That was floating on the breeze.
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.

I was lying in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eyes.
I was hoping for replacement
When the sun burst thru the sky.
There was a band playing in my head
And I felt like getting high.
I was thinking about what a
Friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie.
Thinking about what a
Friend had said
I was hoping it was a lie.

Well, I dreamed I saw the silver
Space ships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun,
There were children crying
And colors flying
All around the chosen ones.
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun.
They were flying Mother Nature's
Silver seed to a new home in the sun.
Flying Mother Nature's
Silver seed to a new home.

To be fair, the first time I ever heard that song, it was a female trio singing it, and I'll pretty much forgive anyone who sings in harmony.

I wonder if we'll ever see the day in society when fluff sets like The Factor can face up to the fact that race doesn't exist, and that the color of our skin doesn't determine your hall pass for using or not using the term n*****.

If the "oppressed" non-race wants to keep the word alive, then let's shout it out from the rooftops.

I'm sick of unequal treatment of people who have no right to claim higher ground. Period.

Don't tell me that I have no right to use the word when you claim it's often used as a term of endearment. That's bs of the highest order. Race is a social construct and doesn't exist as fact. If it's a hate crime for a so-called "white" to use the term n*****, then it's a hate crime for a so-called "black" to use the term cracker.

In fact, fuck everyone who believes in separationist or exclusionary politics. The world doesn't need you.

From After the Gold Rush, but is the next one I buy.

I have that song on one of Neil's live albums.
Pure moonbat stuff, but fun.

Another couple of songs
Memory of a Free Festival, by David Bowie
(oh, to capture just one drop of all the ecstasy that flowed that afternoon, to paint that love upon the white balloon)

Cygnet Committe, by Bowie -

And We Know the Flag of Love is from Above
And We Can Force You to Be Free
And We Can Force You to Believe

And I close my eyes and tighten up my brain
For I once read a book in which the lovers were slain
For they knew not the words of the Free States' refrain
It said

I believe in the Power of Good
I Believe in the State of Love
I Will Fight For the Right to be Right
I Will Kill for the Good of the Fight for the Right to be Right

And I open my eyes to look around
And I see a child laid slain on the ground
As a love machine lumbers through desolation rows
Ploughing down man, woman, listening to its command
But not hearing anymore
Not hearing anymore
Just the shrieks from the old rich

And I Want to Believe
In the madness that calls now
And I want to Believe
That a light's shining through
Somehow

Boy, that sounds like the US under Obama.

And with that, I say "Goodnight lizards"

Safely out of reach of US extradition laws, of course.

Mrs. Bush visited six midwestern battleground states over a 36-hour period on Monday and Tuesday, speaking in cookie-cutter hotel ballrooms, in cookie-cutter phrases, in cookie-cutter suburbs and exurbs of Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Detroit, among other stops.

a red guard of sorts

You mean like these guys?

Role in the Cultural Revolution
Throughout the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards traveled throughout China, going to schools, universities, and institutions, spreading the teachings of Mao. Some were criticized for using violence against people who were believed to be taking things back to capitalism (capitalist roaders). The role of Red Guard was mainly to attack the "Four Olds" of society, that is what is believed to be old ideas, cultures, habits, and customs of China at the time. Red Guards in Beijing and elsewhere in China had taken to the streets from their schools. They made posters, speeches, criticized Party leaders, and some committed violent acts in the name of the Cultural Revolution. Mao met a million Red Guards formally in Tiananmen Square on August 18, 1966. Many people in realms of education, academic, media, literature and punishment were attacked and labeled by the Red Guards as "capitalist roaders" or "anti-revolutionaries". The Red Guards ransacked museums and destroyed old books and works of art throughout China. Many famous temples, shrines, and other heritage sites were destroyed.

re: #31 RTLM

I have no idea what the onion is.

Sooooo... are you an escapee from North Korea, or a Martian, or what?

Behold The Onion (back when it was reliably hilarious -- these days, not so much):

October 22, 1996 -- Congress voted Monday to cut federal funding for the superconducting monkey collider, a controversial experiment which has cost taxpayers an estimated $7.6 billion a year since its creation in 1983.

The collider, which was to be built within a 45-mile-long circular tunnel, would accelerate monkeys to near-light speeds before smashing them together. Scientists insist the collider is an important step toward understanding the universe, because no one can yet say for certain what kind of noises monkeys would make if collided at those high speeds.

"It could be a thump, a splat, or maybe even a sound that hasn't yet been heard by human ears," said project head Dr. Eric Reed Friday, in an impassioned plea to Congress. "How are we supposed to understand things like the atom or the nature of gravity if we don't even know what colliding monkeys sound like?"

But Congress, under heavy pressure from the powerful monkey rights lobby, decided that money being spent on the monkey collider would be put to better use in other areas of government. Now, with funding cut off, the future of our nation's monkey collision program looks bleak.

Congress began funding the monkey collider in 1983, after Reed convinced lawmakers that the U.S. was lagging behind the Soviet Union in monkey-colliding technology. Funds were quickly allocated so that Reed could spend a week procuring monkeys on Florida's beautiful Captiva Island. Though Reed returned with a great tan and a beautiful young fiancee, he reported that there were no monkeys to be found on the sunny Gulf Coast island. Congress funded subsequent trips to the Cayman Islands, Bora Bora and Cancun, but these searches also yielded negative results.

Two years passed without a single monkey being procured, and Congress was close to cutting the project's funding. It was then that Reed got the idea to utilize monkeys already being bred in captivity. The Congressional Subcommittee for Scientific Investigation was enthralled by the idea of watching caged monkeys copulate, and increased funding by 40 percent.

With a steady supply of monkeys ensured, construction of the monkey collider began on a scenic Colorado site. Despite environmental pressure, a mountain was levelled to facilitate construction of the seven-mile-wide complex. Huge underground tunnels were dug, at a cost of billions of dollars and 17 lives. Money left over was used to build resort homes, spas and video arcades for Reed, his colleagues and several Congressmen.

Construction of the collider's acceleration mechanism was delayed for years, as scientists couldn't decide how to get the monkeys up to smashing speed. Last month, it was finally decided that the collider would employ a system in which the monkeys run through the tunnels chasing holographic projections of bananas. "Monkeys love bananas," Reed said, "and they're willing to run extremely fast to get them."

But now it seems the acceleration mechanism may never be built. With the monkey collider placed on indefinite hold, the huge research facility in Colorado lies dormant.

about 2-3 months ago, i was fu*king off in the front yard when i noticed a grip truck and a couple of cops out in front of the house, on th other side of the street. i went over to the (retired) cops to see WTF?, since they're supposed to get permission prior to filming in our AO.

cops said they were filming round the way, but needed a flat quiet spot to set up..... i wasn't happy, but what can you do? they pay the city, the city lets them do what they want. i went about my chores and then the truck was over in front of my house, on my side of the street. again, WTF?

they did a group cringe, cops & all, and then the designated genius decided that a witty response was required, since it was hard to miss Old Glory and the POW/MIA flag flying from the front porch.

best & brightest said "Well, that's not very patriotic of you, is it?"

my reply: "Patriotic? i've seen the 'patriotic' crap y'all turn out: Redacted, Lions for Lambs, Valley of Elah, and all the rest.... go make that shit in Canada........"

Homostupidicus:

"Society today is composed of two distinct species. The first, Homo sapiens...what we consider to be normal intelligent logical people who understand cause and effect, people that understand nothing is free and everthing costs something.
The second species is Homo Stupidicus. This species believes that they are entiteled to have all the wonderful things in life but that they should not have to work for it. They believe that they should not have to risk anything but still reap success. They believe that government can create money out of thin air and should give it to everyone that doesn’t have enough.
Homo Stupidicus has grown, prospered and bred to become a majority of the populace because Homo Sapiens had a minor brain fart and created welfare, social security and modern medicine. Prior to these inventions Homo Stupidicus rarely lived long enough to breed.
We have shortcircuited the filter in the gene pool....Homo Stupidicus is now breeding rampantly and has reached a critical mass where the members of this species outnumber Homo Sapiens. They continue to demand more and more from the productive species while becoming less and less capable of self control, self direction, self reliance and at times self awareness.
The two species are virtually indistinguishable physically. You cannot determine which species you are confronted with by simply looking at them. You have to listen to them to find out whether they are sapient...intelligent, or stupidicus. Homo Stupidicus will invariably make their presence know by the socialistic bleatings they utter.
Most Homo Sapiens are politically conservative or independent. Homo Stupidicus is almost exclusively liberal or apolitical....meaning they don’t care who is in charge as long as the food stamps and welfare check shows up every month.""Society today is composed of two distinct species. Hey I was just about to order a couple books from Amazon that I'd heard about from LGF and I was thinking about buying a Kindle at the same time to save shipping. I was wondering if any of you had tried the Kindle? Is it worth the $360? Are there any bugs, er features, I should know about? Are there many good books by conservative authors like Horowitz and Podhoretz or old Buckley books available for Kindle? Thanks for any help the lizards can offer

It's an electronic device that allows you to download copies of books ,stores them in it's memory, and lets you read them back on the screen. The reason I'm looking at is because most books you can buy for the kindle are half the price you pay for a paper copy. I'm just not sure if there are any good books for it or if it's buggy.

If I hang around a hospital for a while I'm qualified to be a doctor?
And if I go to Afghanistan and "listen" that makes me an expert in foreign affairs and will finally shut up the critics?

The international trip by Mr. Obama is intended to counter Republican criticism — and one advanced by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton during the Democratic primary campaign — that he has too little experience in foreign affairs to serve as a world leader.

No offense taken, Red.

That was MY take, too. Stop them AND help them go bankrupt as quickly as possible.

Which means, play to the weaknesses of Communism: centralized government IS a slow-plodding dinosaur with hardened arteries... today's world calls for decisions! If not today, then THIS WEEK!

America's CEOs grok Boyd's OODA Loop, and are deeply better than competition, but the competition is catching on!

Communism and Marxism is based on an elite, deciding for 'the masses', which there aren't now...

And Marxist socialism is based on fear and cowing the opposition and re-education and prison camps... NONE OF WHICH work!

So we just keep on keeping on, letting the Light lead the way, and helping socialism extinguish itself.

Nothing to die for
Nothing to honor
Nothing to respect
Nothing to revere
Nothing to treasure
Nothing worth putting one's life on the line for (except anonymous sex)
Nothing to commit to
Nothing to cherish
Nothing to sacrifice for
Nothing worth avenging.

Obama Lets YOU Live! (4-part dis-harmony in 7-4 time)

When the handy man comes around
Handing out the public goodies
You can get Obama's best
You don't deserve what we give
But all in all
Obama let's you live!

When the candy man marks you down
Picking up the public misfits
You will get some 'Time Out Camp'
(Its rather dark, and somewhat damp!)
The rest of us just have to pick up
our Public Candy (Social Stick-up!)
While you miss the best of tidbits
Cuz you don't deserve what we give

Obama will make you change, its true
To 'More Like Him' from 'Less Like YOU'
When Hussein, by brain, will shake and strain
And send you off to Camp again
(only if you do survive,
the first time round; come out alive!)
You can work YOUR work, to live
But you don't deserve what we give!

You don't deserve this good we give
Obama's LIGHT, so non-div
isive, hands out wealth
re-dis-tri-buted
(From pockets RICH!
Don't call it 'looted!')
Still you must admit
You don't deserve the good what we give

Yes, it's hilarious!

I like Starbucks but it's overrated. The atmosphere is nice, but I don't go that often. My mother in law goes every day and has a diverse group of close friends whose only common thread is drinking coffee at Starbucks. They really do look out for each other.

If the coffee shop has become our new 'local pub' - camaraderie over a drink without the alcohol and sleaziness - then Starbucks and other coffee shops have done a good thing in this world.

The Bomb Fell

Pearl, Harbor to the Seventh Fleet
lay quiet, still
that Sunday morning
lay calm and quiet
Sunday morning
when the bomb did fall

Not duplicated
thousand-fold
No enemy there
did send it

No hatred was enacted
there
Free world never
did defend it!

Only US warships,
waiting...
a bomb fell
on Pearl Harbor

Obama, can you see
the blame?
America, you say,
deserved that day
December 7th,
now far away,
to have your one bomb fall?

No Nippon planes
did strafe, torpedo
killing thousands
maiming more

Obama says,
There is room
for just one bomb
on Pearl. No more.

re: #315 Metal Man

I think I've read that somewhere before. Sweet dreams

In Roman law, no statement in court was taken as fully true until it was said three times:

Judge: What do you say to these accusations?

Poor slob: I am guilty.

Judge: Are you guilty?

Poor slob: Yes, I am guilty.

Judge: Are you innocent?

Poor slob: No, I am guilty.

This three questions/three affirmations is also found in the Bible, in the Gospels, where after Peter denies knowing Jesus three times, Jesus asks St. Peter three times "Do you really love me?" to reestablish the friendship.

This three questions/three affirmations is also found in some of the oldest Church rituals for the reception of converts, marriage services and the like.

I think it will ultimately be seen as a huge strategic blunder to start his trip in the war zones of the Middle East before going to western Europe. I think by time he hits the big Euro capitals the salon dwellers and the chattering class will be talking about little other than the stupid things he will be saying in front of the reporters.

The European reporters will eat him up alive. Whatever rules we are just now inventing in American to handle political correctness, the Euros have been living with the generations. You get to know someone when you travel with them. There will be many ad hoc exposures to reporters, more than can be screened or explained away.

The Euro press may not cover for him like the press does here. Many of them have funny attitudes towards people of African extraction which most Americans would consider rather quaint and old fashioned at this point. Furthermore, a lot of them fully expect Americans to be morons. Once they get clued in that this guy is not educated, they may take off the gloves. Certainly, the right of center press will.

Wait till they get a load of his ego.

If coffee shops have become our new local pubs we are in trouble... coffee was originally grown in the Arabian peninsula... hence the Arabica bean... that was exported all over the world.

So we will be exchanging something Christians approve of (Christ made water into wine) for something that Arabs have been pushing on the world (laugh a bit, I am having fun with this one).

Federal prosecutors say they should not be forced to drop references to al-Qaida and jihad from the indictment of five men accused of plotting to attack soldiers on Fort Dix.
Lawyers for the men last month asked a judge in U.S. District Court in Camden to delete such language, saying it was "inflammatory" and was included in earlier court filings to incite prejudice against the defendants.
In a response filed Friday, government lawyers said the terms in question are central to the case, arguing that jihadist principles motivated the defendants.

Sigh...I get e-mails from GOPUSA, and while I often agree with them, almost as often I get hysterical scaremongering ads like this:

THE BIBLE IS UNDER ASSAULT!

Dear Fellow Conservative:

For most Americans, the Bible is a source of divine inspiration, moral guidance, and the foundation of Western civilization.

But for an influential group of academic, government and media elites, it's the source of most of the evil in the world today.

Everywhere one turns -- from television, to mainstream news magazines, to the current avalanche of best-selling atheist tracts -- the Bible that millions revere as holy is ridiculed and condemned. The critics say the Bible is full of fables masquerading as history, and that it has regularly incited people to violence and immorality.

But fear not: In The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible, award-winning journalist Robert J. Hutchinson turns the latest historical scholarship against the mockers, skeptics and deniers to show that not only is the Bible true -- but it is also the source of Western ideas of charity, justice, reason, science, and democracy.

Now, for a limited time, HUMAN EVENTS is making The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible available to you absolutely FREE.

CLICK HERE to get your FREE copy of The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Bible today.

Frankly, this sounds like idolatry of almost Koranic proportions. But at least GOPUSA uses the supposed "assault" on the Bible to urge readers to buy a book, rather than riot and burn atheists' houses.

Right out of the gate, The Telegraph is biasing their reporting to cover for Obama's clumsy speechifying. Here's how they report the quote I mentioned earlier:

[Link: www.telegraph.co.uk...]

“I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense, both in Afghanistan and Baghdad of what their biggest concerns are,” he said before the trip

The Telegraph is lying. Here is what he actually said:

"I want to, obviously, talk to the commanders and get a sense both in Afghanistan and in Baghdad of, you know, what the most, their biggest concerns are..." he said before his flight overseas.

It is disappointing to see The Telegraph, a right of center publication, cleaning up his stumbling speech for public consumption. The best you can say is they are about where the American press was a couple months ago.

The lawyer just smiles, jumps into the water, grabs this little rope at the front of the raft and swims to the island. The sharks form a sorta "V" shaped formation on either side of the lawyer, and the raft.
When they get their, the economist and the engineer stare at the lawyer and say "What the hell was that - those sharks not only didn't attack you, they formed like an honor guard or something."
The lawyer just smiled and said: "Professional courtesy"!

Indeed. The left does a lot of permanent damage.

I have a friend who thinks it would be good in the long run if Obama got elected. The country would "learn its lesson" and turn to conservatism, just as they did after Carter.

Forget about it !

this would be a terrible time for that. when Jimmah was prez , the islamofascists were just learning to crawl, now theyre up & running. I fear Mushroom clouds if Barry Hussein becones Prez

re: #501 songbird

Good morning.

Got done with a little Wally world shopping and am back.

Time to attack the paper tiger.

What is with the media worship of this guy? Sure he's the first black with a serious chance, but it is mostly because the media are giving him a free pass on everything. A year ago the dems had something like eleven potential candidates. They quickly winnowed the field, eliminating the best possible choices from the pack leaving us with a crooked lawyer woman and a stuffed shirt black.
Yes, equality would take leaps forward if either of them was elected, but only for a moment. In the long run, blacks would be hurt by an Obama presidency. He would become a benchmark to which centrists would look, and say "Never Again".
For many years, large companies have elevated blacks due to equal opportunity. In many cases they purposely promoted a blakc with few good leadership qualities, and let highly qualified blacks squander in the ranks. I've seen more then one time where a highly qualified black was passed over, and a less qualified, or unqualified black was promoted. In the elevated position, the unqualified black performed poorly, but was kept in the position. That is the ultimate in racism to me.
Some people are voting for Obama to give a black man a chance. many though are voting for him knowing he will do poorly, and want him to be the black Jimmiah Carter.
Bottom line, an Obama presidency will do more to harm black equality then help it.

And they also admitted that when McCain took his latest trip the coverage was substantially less because McCain DID NOT foot the bill for reporters' travel. Hows that for fair & balanced ?.

More boobs, this time the Nigerian delegation at the U.N. offers a "Nudity Bill":

Ironically, Ekaette and the delegates were at the UN to push for her bill which has made two successful outings on the floor of the Senate. The Nudity Bill prescribes three months imprisonment for ladies who display their belly buttons, breasts or wear mini skirts in public places.
The first international attack against the bill was said to have come from Glenda Simms, an expert from Jamaica who expressed disagreement with the bill by asking, “What was that about nudity? Would the police go around with a tape measure to check the length of clothes or see if a breast was exposed? [Link: www.vanguardngr.com...]

July 18th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

unbelievable Says:
Islam isn’t that much different from Christianity. They both have inane holy books that inspite divisive, exclusive, hateful and derogatory behavior in tehir followers.

This world will be better off when the human brain evolves again and drops its ability toward faith.

oldtree says:
I wonder why the Vietnamese didn’t kill Johnny? He bombed them, used rockets and machine guns on them in his flyby’s. They locked him up for his crime to them. Yet they seem to have treated him better than he is willing to treat people that never did attack us, or him? It was our country that attacked Afghanistan and Iraq. It was Saudi Arabia that flew planes into the WTC.
This imbalance is revealing, no?

Well, I reckon I'll have to put it in one and hope folks come back to read it!
Last night I dreamed I was sitting somewhere, drinking something, with Ronald Reagan! No, really, Ronnie (he asked me to call him that!).
He asked who was running for POTUS this year and I told him. He sorta wrinkled his nose at McCain and then said "Who is this Obama fella?" I told him it was someone who was born - at least politically - after Ronnie had passed on. Then I told him what I thought of Obama - Ronnie's a good listener! - and he thought I was "joshing" him. Said "Even the Democratic Party that left me wouldn't nominate someone like that, hell they know how important it is to have at least an experienced fella at the wheel, and especially someone who loves America."
I reassured him about Obama then asked him about Iran. Although I LOVED Ronnie as POTUS, I told him he shoulda taken care of Iran back then or at least in '83 when they bombed the Marine Corps barracks in Lebannon (I am nothing if not a gracious guest/host/whatever) and he mumbled something about getting the hostages out.
Then I asked him who he thought was the person who was the MOST passionate about politics he'd ever met. He immediately said Tom Jefferson over there and pointed to some place behind my back. I turned around and..................woke up.
Wonder what it meant?!

Are you nausiated? I have had heat exhaustion before. It is actually pretty scary. By the time I realized that I was in trouble it was almost too late. If you can get some crushed ice (Sonic has the best), eat it a little at a time. You may get physically sick, but keep getting fluids into you. Also, you will feel extremely weak and shaky.

i can't get my email to work. i'm on dialup here and keep getting try again and no one to help me out. durn it.
anyway, the most important thing is let your body's own cooling system work. my friend and i were driving from L.A. to nyc one summer in a 1958 chevy. it kept throwing off heat from the floor board and it was 115 degrees in he desert. it was a dangerous situation. we stopped at a gas station and i got 5 jugs of water which we slowly poured on our heads and let the water run all over us. my friends face was as red as a beet, seriously, until we stared the water cooling technique. and the dizziness did go away.
keep the wet towel on your neck.
and do call the dr. if you feel faint or anything.

Hey there Jeremy R! That's funny the boob running for President on the Dem ticket was part of my dream last night!

re: #543 realwest

Get a sleep number bed, the conversation with Jefferson is gonna be a long one.

Sure.

I have a reoccurring dream that I'm in a BIG house with rooms opening into other rooms, sometimes with secret passage ways. It's not always the same house.

Last night I had my "house" dream, but with a twist: I was looking for the extra room, but it wasn't there! I found a kind of storage loft but was told I couldn't use it.

Any Freudian Lizards out there?

Sure. Now this is all my opinion, but based on years of psychology of all flavors, and Freudian study.
The big house is just a symbol, a place for the mind to permit the dream to take place. Usually, in this type of dream, no other person inhabits the space, it is yours alone. That may or may not fall into the area of wish fulfillment, as in a life perhaps overly cluttered with obligations and people. The subconscious mind is asking the question, 'what would my life be like if my life was less cluttered?' The person in the dream state will usually confirm the emptiness of the house by touring through it. Satisfied, the questioning begins; is this what I really would want?

I was looking for the extra room, but it wasn't there! I found a kind of storage loft but was told I couldn't use it.

This section would indicate that you were searching for your own private space and someone in your life is obstructing your sense of freedom. Sometimes by searching for clues you can think about what person in your life, who may or may not have been in the dream, is the culprit. It may be symbolic, the dream may not directly reveal the identity of the person. You may have an 'ah-ha' sort of moment the next day. Most of the time dreams that people awaken from and remember are the minds way of saying, "We worked on this problem tonight and here is your answer. Now you have to try to figure out what it means."

What's a "session tent"?!

A session tent is where acoustic musicians bring their instruments, sit in a rough cirlce, and play traditional Irish tunes that everyone knows for hours at a time. All the traditional instruments are present... fiddles, mandolins, accordions, guitars, bagpipies, whistles, drums, bones and spoons, harps, flutes etc.

The sound and feel of the session is always evolving... some instruments leave, other instruments arrive. I've been in sessions where you have as few as three musicians, and I've been in sessions with over 50 musicians. You never know whos' going to show up. Trad musicians come from all over the midwest from out of state for these festivals, and for the most part we all know each other.

Once in a while the artists from the performance bands show up for the sessions, and it really gets rowdy. The most enjoyable session that I've ever sat took place on a rooftop in Milwaukee, during the Milwaukee Irish Fest. I sat in with the folks from Gaelic Storm. We played all night.

I do this on a smaller scale every Wednesday night at my home pub, where the informal sessions usually bring in an average of 20 musicians.

Sometimes the dancers throw a piece of hardwood down in the circle, and join in the fun.

Check session.org to see if you have a pub with a local session, and pay them a visit. It's a helluva a good time.

OK, I'm really out now. Have a good one, folks ;).

Sorry, I don't understand. But your answer, before my long winded version, I don't disagree with. The 'big house' to me is like a blank canvas for the mind to play in. It's very common beginning/playground for dreams. It is what comes next, as the mind plays through different scenarios, that is the real meaning. If the subconscious is so 'excited' about the answer, it will attempt to waken the person in the dream state. If it comes up empty, the person may only have a vague recollection, the next day, of having the dream.

"Um, thats more then I have to spend, I've only got a dollar."

"OK"

Morning guys, some of the best analysis I have seen on the WOT is on Strategypage

"The War on Terror has morphed into the War Against Islamic Radicalism. This religious radicalism has always been around, for Islam was born as an aggressive movement, that used violence and terror to expand. Past periods of conquest are regarded fondly by Moslems. The current enthusiasm for violence in the name of God has been building for over half a century. Historically, periods of Islamic radicalism have flared up periodically in response to corrupt governments, as a vain attempt to impose a religious solution on some social or political problem. The current violence is international because of the availability of planet wide mass media (which needs a constant supply of headlines), and the fact that the Islamic world is awash in tyranny and economic backwardness. Islamic radicalism itself is incapable of mustering much military power, and the movement largely relies on terrorism to gain attention. Most of the victims are fellow Moslems, which is why the radicals eventually become so unpopular among their own people that they run out of new recruits and fade away. This is what is happening now. The American invasion of Iraq was a clever exploitation of this, forcing the Islamic radicals to fight in Iraq, where they killed many Moslems, especially women and children, thus causing the Islamic radicals to lose their popularity among Moslems."

If it comes up empty, the person may only have a vague recollection, the next day, of having the dream.

ROTFLMAO...................Sorry 42 is an oblique Douglas Adams reference.

Contrary to what many people think the human brain only processes information on an abstract symbolic level. We think we are thinking in words or numbers, but in fact our brains are expressing abstract symbols which it then translates into words or numbers. Dreams are the most concrete expression of this abstract symbolic process.

There are two very significant aspects to dreams.

1. Dreams are always intensely personal. They are always about you.
2. Dreams are information processing within the human mind.

The symbols involved are extremely complex due primarily to the very nature of symbols. We use the words for example, dog or house as symbols to represent physical objects, but because the symbols are so abstract when you use the words dog or house each person that you express them to will visualize a different dog or house.

By way of contrast each persons mind has a storehouse of highly specialized abstract symbols and when in a dream state these symbols are represented as physical objects. The intricacy of the object defines the degree to which the mind has defined the abstract symbol. The more intricate the object, the more specialized and defined the symbol.

The fact that the symbols are abstract is why dreams are so confusing. When you are dreaming, you are literally processing information regarding events in your life. It's a conflict and resolution thing. The more a dream troubles you, the closer you are to the resolution of the conflict it represents. Our minds however are devious things, and often we find the resolution on a sub conscience level but are unwilling to accept the resolution on a conscience level.

It's what is known as a defense strategy. Our sub conscience mind seeks to protect our conscience mind from things it believe will be painful to us. Thus it cloaks the symbols of our dreams in abstract symbols not easily recognizable by or conscience mind.
