What's Your News IQ?

Sat, Jul 19, 2008 at 10:32:18 am PDT

I’m not usually a big fan of these online quiz thingies, but the Pew Research Center has one that’s actually kind of interesting: The Pew News IQ Quiz.

Not to brag, but I aced it.

On that recommendation, I'll give it a go.

I should be taken out and shot repeatedly, but I thought that it was closer to 3,000 troops had died in Iraq. I had expected a larger MSM handwringing at 4,000 so I thought that number hadn't been hit yet. Only one wrong.

4 psyop  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:34:47am

I will try it out....

5 Dr. Manhattan  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:35:24am

I got 11/12. The Dow question got me, I don't trade or really give a s&*^ about economic news so I'm sorta smug about missing that one.

6 dmandman  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:36:24am

I got the talk show and the body count question wrong...I guess I don't watch enough network TV.

7 rightwinger3  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:37:02am

Learn everything I need to know on LFG. 12/12.

8 Kaitian868  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:37:25am

I scored a 91 but the DOW question I put 12000 which is accurate. I think the correct answer according to them is 10,000. I wasn't aware that 11400 is closer to 10K than 12K.

9 doriangrey  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:38:03am

Only 11 out of 12... I am a news imbecile...

10 psyop  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:39:03am

Crap, I missed one.

I stupidly clicked Rham for DNC chair instead of Dr. Dean.

I knew as soon as I clicked that I was wrong. I was going through to fast...

Hmm nevermind. I automatically went with Kurd than Sunni. *shrugs* I know they're a major faction too in Iraq but only in the north. I guess I need to read more clearly.

100.

14 Beller0ph1  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:39:59am

I also aced it. Stupid MSM. Of all the other questions to ask, they ask about the death toll in Iraq. That hasn't been news for weeks!

91 :(
i said bosnia instead of kosovo

18 chicagodudewhotrades  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:40:54am

I got 11 out of 12. I'm in the 91 percentile. Given that, I should qualify to run the Harvard Law Review, since Obama got the job only due to being a minority.

19 laZardo  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:41:00am

12/12, 97th percentile in all brackets.

The only question I'm unable to answer at this point is why someone like me is hanging out here rather than with my youthful contemporaries over you-know-where.

20 Rosewater  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:41:13am

That was cool. Aced it as well.

21 Mich-again  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:41:22am

12 out of 12 with no doubts about any of the questions. That was too easy.

59 lawhawk  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:50:11am

12/12 here - and the reason it puts you in the 97th percentile is because a significant portion of those taking the test get all 12 questions correct - so your percentile goes down. 3% according to Pew get all questions right.

61 PeggyU  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:50:23am

I missed one. Same one as ec marm @#3 and for the same reason.

The Dow one is a little iffy, and I dithered between 10,000 and 12,000 before opting for 12,000. Do they update the quiz daily?

62 shanec99  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:50:24am

Quiz too easy...
but then we have to be concerned about the members of our body politic who would fail this test.

63 Steffan  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:50:30am

91%. I missed the Dow question.

Some of the national averages are pathetic at best. College grads averaged 63%? WTF are they teaching in college?

And the national average is 50%. Depressing but true: no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

64 Noam Sayin'  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:50:31am

It's disappointing to find out that college educated people scored only 63% better than the rest.

I don't consider myself all that bright, or knowledgeable about current events and even I aced this quiz.

But then again, I bought soldiers breakfast this morning, and that made me feel real good.

I took a test in one of my communications cllasses and there were 10 essay questions on it. The instructions said to print your name in the upper right hand corner and turn you papers in. I was out of the class in 4 minutes.
Some of the kids actually took the test and spent the whole hour on it.

re: #92 Opinionated

Was the test put up today? Tuesday, the answer would have been 10,000.

That I don't know. The test may have a way of using the last reported Dow Average, rather then a static average built into the results analysis.

It would be a dirty trick to use a static without giving us a time reference in the question. I watch the DOW frequently and can guess it fairly closely for the last close, but ask me what it was on a particular day on the calender and I wouldn't have a clue.

230 Killgore Trout  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 11:29:49am

MPAC declares the UK a pagan country....
Public Comment: Jilbabs & huge beards won't help you!

Muslims are now FOURTH class citizens.

People now speak about Muslims in a way they wouldn't even speak of animals.

Muslims should better realise, -- and damn quick, this is a PAGAN country. Got it? PAGAN country.

If jilbaabs make you a Muslim; if huge beards will get you to heaven; if 8th century Arab dress is a sure sign of piety, then hey, leave for Arabia now! And let the rest of us practise Islam.

Oh, but hang on: you don't want to go, do you? You want to wallow in the Pagan 'filth'. What hypocrites!

It's a shame MPAC doesn't have the power to compel Muslims to see sense. If Muslims followed what MPAC is suggesting, we could see a huge renaissance of UK Islam.

They also call Muslims who cooperate with the UK "House Negroes"...
"House Negroes" in Thobes

We have a few of our own ‘house negroes’ in the Muslim community, those who identify more with their non-Muslim masters. They try to look like them, talk like them and act like them – even if it means embracing the haram. The Muslim ‘house negro’ aids his master against the Muslims, and like the ‘house negroes’ of old he does the master’s work for him, even if it means fighting against his own.

Both of these are front page posts.

232 shiplord kirel  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 11:30:34am

Aced it.
It is a sad commentary the question the highest percentage of people answered correctly was the identity of the pro-Obama talkshow host.

I also thought it was interesting that college grads did no better on Iraq casualty question than those with high school educations and not as well as those with some college. No group answered much better than random on this one.

The youngest age group topped the others on just one question: the major branches of Islam. This may reflect heavy emphasis in public education in recent years.
This is the same demographic that would be more likely to correctly identify Crispus Attucks than they would Charles DeGaulle on a history poll.

I used to make HTML/Javascript tests that I ran on an internal network (intranet) at the school I was at. It automatically graded the test at the end and a few other tricks. If I had some server space to park the test at I could create a new one once in a while. I find them kind of fun, myself.

Thing is - these anchors and all are now stuck with BO for the next few days, in some pretty confined environments.
Its hot, its uncomfortable - and they will get bored.
So will the 300 'advisors'. So will BO.

Could backfire in a big way, they will probably become pretty disillusioned, and while they may report glowingly just now, the doubts will have started to creep in. And as tehre is quite some time til November, I can see some pretty major players leave BOs camp before then.

Basically, this trip is one of the more stupid ideas coming from the BO Campaign management.

Actually I was thinking more the guys who are just back from shore leave.

Oh, me too, at first.

On our way to West Pac in '65, medics were flown out to the carrier (two days out of Subic) to give the crew a mandatory-attendance briefing. From what I heard in hangar bay one that day, I stayed on the base every Subic in-port that cruise.

Eleven out of twelve - missed the correct number of troops dead in Iraq. Put 4000 instead of 5000. The Political Typology test was interesting; I never realized we "Enterprisers" make up only nine percent of the American public.
Contrary to most in my type, I get far more political news and information from the internet than I do from Fox News.

I think Pat means the Theodore Roosevelt, CVN 71 (commissioned 25 Oct 1986), rather than Franklin Roosevelt CV 42 (27 Oct 1945 /
1 Oct 1977)
Current active carriers are: Kitty Hawk (CV 63), Enterprise (CVN 65), Nimitz (CVN 68), Eisenhower (CVN 69), Vinson (CVN 70), Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Lincoln CVN 72), Washington (CVN 73), Stennis (CVN 74), Truman (CVN 75), and Reagan (CVN 76), with HW Bush (CVN 77) to join the fleet shortly.

I'm going to quibble with question 4. I know what you're looking for (8 years), but as I understand it, that is not correct.

The president can only be elected to two terms.

Consider, however, the case of a VP who assumes the office one month into a deceased president's term. He could serve out that term, then run for POTUS on his own right and serve two four-year terms.

So I think the answer is probably 11 years and 364 days (I'm ignoring leap years. Math is hard.)

Fairly easy test, and the results are interesting. The question that had the highest percentage of correct answers was:

7. What is the name of the talk show host who has campaigned for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama?

The lowest percent:

5. Do you happen to know the name of the current majority leader of the U.S. Senate?

And only about 1 in 4 responders got the US miltary deaths in Iraq correct. I wonder if the others guessed high or low.

The US Army no longer uses the Division-centric breakdown, being in the process of converting to a Brigade-centric breakdown. 42 Brigades when the conversion is finished and depending on who is elected. Divisional commands will still be used, but any Brigade can operate under any Divisional command. In theory...

The USMC has three divisions (2 regular and one reserve) with the manpower to quickly round up 2 more in an emergency.

There are currently ten fleet carriers in service. Although one is currently a floating mobile wreck from internal fire damage.

There are just 94 B-52H's remaining in service.

There are 92 B-1B's in service.

There are 20 B-2's in service.

Only 3? It would take at least 7 before I started to get acquainted with the floor, though 3 would make the rest of reality start to do some moving.

The good news: It was higher yesterday, which means it only got 3 seconds on the news. Had it been lower, I would have remembered the 5 minutes that had the lead-in "Not since the Great Depression..."

10 out of 12- missed the Dow and the Kosovo questions. When it comes to that Bosnia/Serbia/Kosovo stuff, I have absolutely no idea who won or who the good guys were, although I do know it was a Serb who shot Archduke Ferdinand which should give me at least an 85%, and I knew all those WWI guys were cousins which pushes me up to 91%

re: #540 wrenchwench

Wow, 14 of the top 15 countries are Muslim (I think), and the exception is Israel, which is surrounded by many of the others.

The key to this breakdown is that it is based on GDP.

If your country has a GDP of $100 and spends $10 on a knife,
they spent $1.00 per $10.00 GDP.

If another country has a GDP of $10 x 1011 and only spends a measly $10,000,000,000 on weapons,
they spend 1/10¢ per $10.00 GDP.

We can afford to spend so much. Poor countries that are spending disproportionally large amounts on weaponry might try to do more to ease poverty in their nations instead of begging us for help all the time. We were an insignificant little power 200 years ago. We don't mind helping so much if their is some sort of progress as a result.

A) Yes
B) No, that's absurd.

The film-clip of the child (al Durah) being shot and killed by Israeli soldiers has been exposed as a fraud.
A) Yes, it has been thoroughly debunked. It was staged.
B) No

Hamas is a:
A) Terrorist organization dedicated to the destruction of Israel.
B) Palestinian Charitable organization that eschews violence.

A first term Senator with a rich, sonorous voice and and experience as a "community organizer" in Chicago is obviously well qualified to be a wartime president of the US.
A) Yes

Just off the top of my head, a lot of times the name of the group depends upon which country they are operating in. I'm probably wrong but I think Islamic jihad is a Palestinian based offshoot of Hezbollah, which is based in Lebanon.

True, Ploome, but the "bag limit" on Jews did not lesson the "open" season on gypsies, poles, russians, catholics, protestants, etc.. They were statism as evil incarnate, only surpassed by the later statist entries, such as Laos, where the "open" season included eyeglass wearers, educated people, bourgeoise, etc..
Evil is endemic and unfortunately, Jews have suffered inordinately, but evil affects all.

Calm down, ploome. All i meant was that no one is safe. Yes, Jews suffered and yes most of Europe's Jews were killed, but a monstrosity such as national socialism, or communism will kill people for a variety of reasons. The death of one person, per John Donne, is horrible. I did not mean to demean the death of european jewry or imply that the Nazis persecuted other ethnic groups as viciously as they did for jews.

What can I say? i can't defend the indefensible. All I meant to say was that Nazi statism's racism was an evil thing which planned to kill people, jew, pole, slav, etc., based on a criterion which was quite arbitrary (note the Japapnese being given honorary Aryan status). No one attempted to defend it.
your comment up above to #709 bothers me in that again you appear to be judging who is and who isn't a jew and not judging people by what they are. I doubt you even believe in righteous Gentiles.
I guess the only thing i can do is to join my christian relations in a pogrom or join my jewish relatives in a preemptive strike.

725 Globular Cluster  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 4:31:54pm

I got all of them correct. Very easy questions. What is interesting, however, are the questions that gave people the most trouble.

3. Since the start of military action in Iraq, about how many U.S. military personnel have been killed?

Only 28% got this one correct. It indicates the extent of media distortion about casualties. I bet, dollars to doughnuts, that most people think the casualties are astronomical.

More people know the dictator of Venezuala (Chavez, 50%) than the Senate Majority Leader (Harry Reid, 24%). This indicates that Harry Reid is an inconsequential wallflower douchebag beyond the radar of most Americans.

Most people are more familiar with Kosovo independence (46%) than economic questions, which they bombed.

In general, I think these results are actually flattering to the general population, since the only people who can take the quiz are either computer-literate or are confident enough to take the telephone poll.

Boeing built the B-52. The last new airframe rolled off the assembly line in 1963, so the NEWEST B-52 existing is likely older than everyone on its crew, except maybe a Wing Commander or senior leadership in the wing/squadron.

A while back, it was said that one specific B-52 had one specific man as a gunner, then that man's son later became a pilot on that same tail, then HIS son also became a pilot on that same tail. Three generations, one aircraft. Only in America!

My 9-year-old (Canadian) son just guessed, and got 4 out of 12. That was better than 23% of the Americans who answered. Unbelievable. There's public education for ya.

762 kayfromcarroll  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 7:21:13pm

91% 11 out of 12. Missed the one on the Dow. If I made more money, I'd have some to invest. Commission sales sucks right now.

re: #721 ploome hineni
Ho hum, still no response. again, your quote excluded the portion where the Japanese were accorded honorary Aryan status. Why? Because the goal was power. Jews, along with a number of others were tagged for death. Does a dead Pole mean less than a dead Jew, if they were killed for "ethnic" reasons?
Also, now you're claiming that 1/4,1/8, and 1/2 Jews were persecuted, but a while ago you accused me of "not being jew" enough as I was a half breed (the official term, mischlinge, apparently bothered you). Why not now? I feel you're an intelligent person, but I think sometimes you're really over the top.

764 LEGION  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 7:32:58pm

Instead of how many soldiers died in Iraq protecting our freedom since 2003, they should put how many Americans were slaughtered uselessly on our highways annually! (40,000+)!

765 LEGION  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 7:35:44pm

re: #755 mattm

I remember when the Dow broke 2000 in the 70's- it was considered to be untouchable- now its 12000- what a difference 30 years make.

766 MrTunes  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 7:55:34pm

that is an easy quiz

i had a perfect score

I weep for the rest of the voting public if I occupy the 97th percentile

767 Xplodeit  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 8:17:20pm

That was an easy 12 of 12. I can't believe that 6 out of 12 is average.

768 Clubbeaux  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 9:22:33pm

Missed one -- the death count.

769 bosforus  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 9:36:28pm

9/12
missed the dow jones, chairman of the fed reserve and the serbia question. i feel bad for missing the last one.

770 MrC_5150  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 9:38:02pm

100% -- I guessed on the Federal Reserve Board question.

I'd flunk an entertainment news IQ test.

771 LaMano  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 10:29:42pm

Damn. I missed the 'Gender' question.

772 PeggyU  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 11:17:01pm

Hahahahaha. Our ten-year-old son got "91". He listens to Rush.

773 Jito463  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 11:29:39pm

re: #63 Steffan

91%. I missed the Dow question.

Some of the national averages are pathetic at best. College grads averaged 63%? WTF are they teaching in college?

And the national average is 50%. Depressing but true: no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

Umm, of COURSE the national average is 50%

It's the AVERAGE!

As in, the half-way point between rock-bottom and perfect score. 50% will ALWAYS be the average, lol.

774 RightFinn  Sat, Jul 19, 2008 11:54:44pm

Not too bad for a foreigner (from Finland), got 11/12. Didn't know the Senate majority leader.

Anyway, in a few hours I'll be boarding a plane to the U.S., will be vacationing there for a week. Looking forward to visiting your great country!

775 jaycurrie2  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 12:55:51am

12/12 which is not bad for a Canadian.

I would love to do one of these with questions like, "Who is the leader of the Federal Liberal Party of Canada?" Or "Why is there a Tim Hortons in Khadahar?"

And for extra points, "What is the political affiliation of the current Prime Minister of Great Britain?" , "Which nation emits the greatest amount of CO2?", "Which leader of a G-8 state recently wed an ex-super(ish) model?"

776 American Jewess In Jerusalem  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 1:55:34am

I got 11/12. The Dow Jones threw me. I figured if the economy is bad, the answer must be the lower number -- my instincts betrayed me.

777 American Jewess In Jerusalem  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 1:57:24am

I was kind of surprised that the quiz was missing two important questions:

1) Who is the most evil terrorist in the world? (answer: GWB)
2) Which country is to blame for all the world's problems (answer: U.S.A.)

778 canuck99  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 3:52:49am

Another Canadian who got into the 91st percentile. So easy. I guess the comedian who said it was right. "Canadians know more about America than most Americans know about anything." LOL!

779 thinker  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 5:17:36am

Aced. I would think, if you don't get most of them right, your head's in the sand.

780 JAT  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 6:33:25am

11/12 - damn Fed Reserve and I knew better.

There are some pretty dumb people running around this country, most of them have been elected to an office of some sort.

781 Biff  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 7:38:56am

I wish the Pew survey would have asked the participants GOP/Indy/Dem or even better McCain/Obama. I realize the age groups pretty much tells the story, but I think it would have been even worse, as facts don't seem to be a factor for Obama supporters.

782 Biff  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 8:05:50am

I wonder how many 18-29s will know when election day is?

There is an eerie correlation throughout the quiz between the 18-29s and the high school or less crowd, which is strange for a generation that has the highest % of students going on to college. Note that even college freshmen should answer "some college", that is if they even know that that is the correct answer.

783 MadJadBad  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 8:15:26am

There's a big problem with the statistics for this test. I checked and you can take the test as many times as you want. It repeats the same questions. You would assume that other people have tried this. You would also assume that you would get 100% correct every time you took the test again. I guess that you could purposely get a worse score the 2nd time you took the test, but I think most people would try to get a better score. So the stats are probably skewed to the higher side. By how much? ?

784 Boghie  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 8:31:51am

12/12.

The only concern was the question on the DOW. I know we tipped into 10,000 territory a couple of weeks ago - but, we bounced back!

A couple of observations:

We should rescind the right of women and teenagers to vote. Or, at least give them this test. The only question women did better than average on was the Oprah question. That is a real ugggghhhhhh.

The Iraq casualty question was almost guesswork by our population. That is scary. We beat a random guess by 7%. A better question would have been to ask the same question regarding Afghanistan - or even Serbia.

How many of you chaps noted that this test was using statistics from March 2008. Yuk, yuk. Your DOW answers were more of a SWAG than you thought. A couple of weeks ago you could have been right - but marked wrong.

785 Dr. Stu  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 9:47:05am

I got 11 out of 12 because of the DOW question. I was only familiar with the 10,000 number which I last saw it near on Monday, so of course now I am wrong. You really have to be a news junkie to keep up with the up and down of the DOW. They should probably dump any question that requires them to keep floating the correct answer day by day.

786 czdude  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 10:03:11am

Yeah, I aced it too.

Amazing what the results show. Not too surprising that most people are losing interest in the Iraq war since MSM devotes less coverage to it. But of course that is to be expected with the positive results from the surge and lower US soldier casualties.

787 steveegg  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 12:09:00pm

Aced it in a hurry, but still couldn't beat the 97th percentile.

788 BackwardsBoy  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 12:58:42pm

Hide all the sharp objects. I missed the combat deaths question, which put me at 91%, which makes me a *gasp* Nine-Percenter!

789 namyer  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 3:16:04pm

I wouldn't brag about acing this one. Pretty simple.

790 cincinnati_kid37  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 6:03:09pm

Here's Your Score: You correctly answered 12 of the 12 possible questions along with approximately 3% of the public. You did better than 97% of the general public.

---That's scary.

791 alpineUS  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 3:27:39am

Here's Your Score: You correctly answered 10 out of the 12 possible questions, which means you did better on the quiz than 83% of the general public.

questions focused a lot on the dems...

792 Mr. Paul  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 8:24:09am

Darn that Kosovo question. I was so on a roll. I will take 11/12.

793 rushbabe  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 2:39:20pm

12 out of 12.
Would like to see the scores the KosKids would get :)
