Obama Shunning Foreign Media

Sun, Jul 20, 2008 at 12:09:03 pm PDT

Christoph von Marschall of Germany’s Der Tagesspiegel says the Barack Obama campaign has been making sure Obama doesn’t have to answer any real questions from the international media: Snubbed by Obama.

Barack Obama is on his way to Europe, where an adoring public awaits. But I wonder if the reception would be quite so enthusiastic if Obama’s fans across the Atlantic knew a dirty little secret of his remarkable presidential campaign: Although Obama portrays himself as the best candidate to engage the rest of the world and restore America’s image abroad, and many Americans support him for that reason, so far he has almost completely refused to answer questions from foreign journalists. When the press plane leaves tonight for his trip, there will be, as far as I know, no foreign media aboard. The Obama campaign has refused multiple requests from international reporters to travel with the candidate.

As a German correspondent in Washington, I am accustomed to the fact that American politicians spare little of their limited time for reporters from abroad. This is understandable: Our readers, viewers and listeners cannot vote in U.S. elections. Even so, Obama’s opponents have managed to make at least a small amount of time for international journalists. John McCain has given many interviews. Hillary Clinton gave a few. President Bush regularly holds round-table interviews with media from the countries to which he travels. Only Obama dismisses us so consistently.

This spring Obama allowed at least one foreign reporter on trips to Ohio and Texas. But as the campaign has progressed, access has become more difficult for foreign correspondents. E-mail inquiries get no reply, phone calls are not returned. My colleagues and I know: We are last in line. We don’t matter.

My take: his staff is desperately worried that the candidate will make a gaffe, as soon as he ventures into uncharted territory. Foreign reporters tend to ask questions about ... you know ... foreign stuff.

There may be a few foreign reporters with the balls to ask him serious questions, unlike our "esteemed" press that has organisms every time Obama utters a sound. I totally agree with #4. The guy needs to take some lessons from Billy C.

10 sleepyone  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 12:14:51pm

Why should he have to answer questions from foreign press?

On the other hand, he did go over there to showboat....

11 Pigtown Water Dog  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 12:14:56pm

What a worthless interview it would be. Someone from the daily Tagblatt would get something accurately translated, then BHO would just say that the "foreign" journalists misunderstood his nuances.

This actually comes under the good news/bad news category. Bad news for the journalists, good news for ordinary American citizens who won't be further stereotyped abroad when Obama made the inevitable stupid remark10.

Sort of OT: I was reading an article on Obama "eating with the troops" where he said "This is my favorite thing to do". Which I find complete bullshit and garbage. I've never read any articles in the past where he's "ate with the troops" but I do know that he did play a basketball round back in 2005 when he took a trip to the Middle East.

But favorite thing? I doubt it. The most favorite thing that he likes to do is pandering to everyone possible and working with Rezko although he's now in jail.

A rambling diary at Kozistan about the Obamessiah's German stop:

Berlin's principal monument to the war dead of the Soviet Union stands on that street, about halfway between the column and the Brandenburg Gate. ...Obama will be looking in its direction when he speaks. He will also symbolically be answering Ronald Reagan; when the latter spoke at the Brandenburg Gate, he was looking West. Obama will be looking East, in the direction of the Brandenburg Gate, answering and rebutting Reagan, as we prepare to enter a new era in American politics and bury Reagan's malignant legacy.

So, BO will be gazing toward a monument to the Soviet Union, and "rebutting" Reagan and his "malignant" legacy from within a united Berlin in a united Germany in a free Europe. The cognitive dissonance of the left is staggering.

Obama is now scheduled to speak in front of Berlin's "Siegessäule" (Victory Column) which celebrates the victories of Prussia over Denmark, Austria and France.

Adolf Hitler moved the column from the Reichstag to this place. He saw a symbol of German supremacy in it. For strange reasons it survived the Allied bombings.

Don't know who is advising Obama but he/she is a complete idiot in foreign policy.

Btw the column is crumbling so it may be wise not to stand to close to it.

OK the column has also become a symbol of the gay movement due to its phallic form. Maybe that helps.

Obama was hogging the ball.
All the military men ere arrayed on the sidelines at ''parade rest'' waiting for his photo op to end so they could play.
Obama bounced the ball a few times then, holding it, turned to the camera.
End of scene.
I never saw any interaction between him and the men in uniform.

Anyone here good at hacking into teleprompters?

You'd have to know what program he's using. In broadcast news (which is, of course, different than corporate situations) the scripts are controlled in Avid INews. Typically (in broadcast) scripts aren't changed at teleprompter computer, but are changed on the producers computer. I'd also guess that in Obama's case, the person that wrote the script is different than the person who is putting the script into the computer- and that there might be a third person who is actually running the teleprompter.

/generally, it would be easier (but not as satisfying) to just wait for the inevitable extemporaneous debate debacle with McCain. Or just get the teleprompter op totally wasted the night before an event.

60 Minutes is supposed to have a story on some machine that kills cancer cells (really). Probably worth watching.

Crossed wires - that was actually a bunch of KosKidz chanting that Obama cures cancer. A lot of people will be REALLY disappointed when they learn the truth - but then, that's a given where Obama's concerned. (Seriously, killing cancer cells is easy: bleach or high temperatures will do that fine. The tricky bit is killing as many cancer cells as possible with acceptable levels of collateral losses of non-cancer cells. I've seen a few promising ideas lately, so I'll be interested to hear what this one involves - even if it does involve CBS.)

Sadly, though he probably doesn't know enough about the outside world to know it, Obama would be guaranteed fawning propaganda from the UK's BBC, Guardian and Independent, who have been tireless cheerleaders for him all along. I'd love to see him interviewed by someone like Borat, though: within minutes, he'd be bragging about his intimate knowledge of Kraphedistan, his fluent command of Kraphed and how well his administration's agenda would mesh with the Kraphed agenda, whatever that is.

For VP, there's always OJ Simpson: sporting career, good at reading lines with no connection to reality and he could use the office of Vice President to help in the search for the real killer!

Thank you, Luigi. My husband is also Type II. Our family trees are full of Type II's, and now science seems to be leaning to a genetic connection in both Type I and Type II. I have a few cousins who are Type I...my husband knows very little re his paternal side, but his mother was a Type II..years ago people did not talk about diabetes..it was a disease with shame attached, as Type II's were blamed for their case..I am a retired RN, and when I was diagnosed, I called all my cousins, on both sides. to tell them, as I felt they should know. I am still amazed at the number of family members they told me were also Type II. Incredible, and 1 was my Mum's brother, zt'l, a PhD with 3 degrees from MIT, who never said a word.

It is at least 4 generations on 1 side I can trace, but much further back? There was no real treatment, nor any medication, and the complications were brutal. I am on 2 different insulins, and always will be, as my pancreas puts out so little insulin. Thank G-d my husband is diet controlled. I actually diagnosed him by accident, in the best misunderstanding on my part ever! I have not billed him.....yet ;)

Looking at the world-wide near-epidemic of diabetes (Type II)? It is in rich and poor countries, with every ethnic group. And thanks to Shrillary's near-destruction of our health care system, there are not enough endocrinologists to handle it in the US.

I have saved the 2 sites...

This story should go to Michele Obama so she can see how "mean" Americans are.

It was the worst kind of luck that gave Kanzius the idea to use radio waves to kill cancer cells: six years ago, he was diagnosed with terminal leukemia and since then has undergone 36 rounds of toxic chemotherapy. But it wasn't his own condition that motivated him, it was looking into the hollow eyes of sick children on the cancer ward at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

"I saw the smiles of youth and saw their spirits were broken. And you could see that they were sort of asking, 'Why can't they do something for me?'" Kanzius told Stahl.

"So they started to haunt you. The children," Stahl asked.
"Their faces. I still remember them holding on their Teddy bears and so forth," he replied. "And shortly after that I started my own chemotherapy, my third round of chemotherapy."

Our family too!

Since I am so open about it, and have been since I was diagnosed, I hear this from so many people, who are really just beginning to realize that they, too, are at risk.

My biggest beef is with the American Diabetes Association, which takes 75 % of the membership fee, and puts it into their monthly magazine. Very little goes into research.

I am also a member of the Canadian Diabetes Association, who have mostly volunteers working for them, and who publish their excellent magazine 4x a year, but a lot of the membership money goes into research.

They also give a generous reduction to senior citizens.

Diabetics world-wide owe so much to Sir Frederick Banting...he was an amazingly selfless man.

re: #162 big L

Since insulin was not even discovered til 1922, IIRC, Type I was a death sentence, and Type II? No real help. When I was a student nurse, urine tests were done, and by the time the glucose showed up on the test strip, I would say that the majority of diabetics were quite hyperglycemic. And this, in and of itself, caused so many complications.

By the time I was diagnosed, the glucose meter was used, and it was so much better. Ironically, the man who first perfected it was a Type I, who was an engineer. no one wanted to listen to him. He then went to Med. School, and became an endocrinologist. (His wife is a shrink, and they already had kids, who went to school with our kids...they live in the same village we do)..and with his MD license, he then was given attention! G-d bless him. The world could have had the glucometer far earlier if companies were not stuck on stupid.

Isn't it sad that such a stigma was placed on our Uncles, so that they hid being a diabetic, as if they were criminals? It is very wise that anyone with a family history of Type II be tested at least once a year, and read up on the symptoms. 3 of our 4 kids are now in their 40's, and need to be 'reminded'...a lot.

Type II here as well--

Three years ago I had gastric bypass. My insurance co. gave approval for this in 24 hours' time. It was cheaper for them than the 2 kinds of insulin (6-8 shots/day) and the 16 (!) other meds I was taking.

I was not the kind of obese people generally associate with gastric bypass. I lost about 45 pounds. BUT...ta-dah! My blood sugar was an average of 104 today (4 readings), I haven't shot up insulin in 3 years, and I'm on three meds, Metformin, Glipizide, and trazadone.

If your insurance co. is amenable, check out the bypass. Some research is required.

We ought to have a diabetes club on LGF!

I am not quite a Type 1 1/2, seriously, but cannot take the oral meds. I actually require insulin. Humalog 2x/day, and Lantus at night.

I am in great control..Hg A1C is a constant 5.4, and my 4x/day tests are at the highest, 110, but not that often.

At diagnosis? My blood sugar was over 400. I was in that lousy state of Denial. But once diagnosed and stabilized? Knock wood! I am hypo sometimes, though.

/My idea of fun.

I am not a candidate for bypass. Good for you! You are doing a great job.

My husband took about 18 months to actually admit he was a diabetic. He is in good control, as he would rather just avoid 'The Look'. At least my RN background taught me that men are, uh, not the very best *cough* *cough* patients!

And yes, I really did diagnose him, very early on, when his blood glucose was around 140. I had mis understood something he said, and asked him to please go test on my meter. Amazingly he did, and when I looked at the number, I asked when he last ate...it was over 4 hours. I was crying inside...and he took it 4 more times, until Monday AM ( it was a Sunday when he first tested), when I called our internist. Advice? 'Watch what he eats, and test 4x/day for 2 weeks, and if still elevated? Call'.

I did...I called my endocrinologist ASAP, and he said 'you know what it is already, don't you? Come right in, and I will see him on an emergency basis.' I knew, we went, and the rest is history. I called our now ex-internist, and told him off when we got back, and asked for our records (patient property in NY) ...and we have used our endocrinologist as our internist ever since..he is Board-certified in both.

Take care!

See, my mom told me that my grandma z'l took it personally, that she felt this condition, which affected ALL her kids, was somehow her fault. . .her mothering "caused" it. . .and yeah, I have been one of those dragged to the doctor kids all my life:)

How sad....when my Bubbe zt'l died, none of her kids or grandkids were yet diabetics. More and more research world-wide shows that there is far more of a genetic link re Type II than ever imagines, which can very possibly alter the way it is discerned, and also improve prevention and also treatment.

IMHO, a real cure for Type I will be found first, as it is an auto-immune disease, but that Type II will not be far behind.

Nosey question: Is 'Ema' mother, in your case? ;)

I had such a hard time with my first injection-paralyzing fear. I had a great nurse/coach talk me through it over the phone. (Shhhh--she told me that her male clients were harder to coax through those first injections...!)

I am glad you are so well in control. People who don't have it, sometimes don't get the dietary constraints and the foo-fra-ha great control requires. Keep it up!

I have had lots of +400 blood sugar readings, and I was at the point where I was starting to give my stuff away, in prep for the inevitable.

To put those blood sugar numbers in perspective, I had my husband check his blood once, after 2 slices of Pizza Hut pizza and 3 beers--he came in at 89. Wowzers.

For anyone on lgf who may be a candidate, check out the bypass. It's showing promise.

re: #181 DisturbedEma

That is so hard...my maternal Bubbe zt'l lost a son to drowning, at age 16, on a Fourth of July weekend, and a few years later developed rheumatoid arthritis, an auto-immune disease. She was never the same. Her hair turned white very quickly, I was told. This happened over a decade before I was born..but all my first cousins were also affected, as our Mums gave us a dreadful fear of the water.

I do not think there is any worse nightmare than losing a child. One of my sons and my daughter in law lost a twin ironically 36 hours after her birth, over 8 years ago, and we are all affected, especially my 8 year old granddaughter, who knows.

We knew beforehand that she could not survive, and they were born just before week 25. It is always with us, always. Prepared? Not prepared? Either way it is just the very worst nightmare.

All children are miracles, but my 8 year old granddaughter is my heroine; she weighed 1 lb. 8 oz at birth, and fought like a tiger to survive. Looking at her now? She still amazes us.

"My take: his staff is desperately worried that the candidate will make a gaffe, as soon as he ventures into uncharted territory. Foreign reporters tend to ask questions about ... you know ... foreign stuff"

That's what I was thinking as I was reading this. He can't afford to make the colossally ignorant gaffe he'll make when his knowledge of fact s is seriously challenged...I think the fact that some people think that a trip to Germany a few months before an election somehow adds qualifications to a candidate is laughable (and I laugh at the ignorance) It's a pretty transparent "blaH BLAH BLAH" MOMENT FOR TALKING HEADS ON TV TO SELL THEIR WARES....

oops...capslock...

anyways...

He can't afford to show his ignorance, and it's pretty transparent that he is, when you take a closer look. We'll see how many people are paying attention, and how many people are brainwashed this November

...I s'pose...

re: #189 reine.de.tout

It is a part of life, but not one that can ever be really ready for. I am so sorry that you also have been through this.

There is not a day that I don't think of them any number of times. For about the first year or so, I would see someone from the back, and think it was my Dad zt"l...my Mum was short, like I am, and did not stand out in the crowd; my little granddaughters tease me about being only a bit taller than they are..at ages 6 and 8. They can't wait to be over 5' tall. I also used to dream about them, and sometimes wake up, thinking that they were in the room. And they always were the age I was at the time...never the ages they died.

Now? I wish I could dream about them.
And when the phone rang at a certain time? I would think it was my parents, as even though we live in a NYC 'burb, and my parents lived in a Boston 'burb, we would talk to each other every day.

Sadly, it is not all that unusual for the widower to die within the first year. Please take care of yourself. It is not easy. And it is not all that long ago.

196 EE  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 8:16:22pm

Obama has a team of 300 advisers on foreign policy questions who prepare bullet points for Obama to answer questions, even on very basic things that he should certainly be familiar with. This includes Iraq, and even the subject of removing troops from Iraq.
[Link: www.americanthinker.com...]

If questions from the foreign press were included, Obama's staff of 300 advisers preparing bullet points on foreign affairs questions would have too long a list of items, and Obama would not be able to memorize them. In that case he would have to actually think, and that is something that they do not trust him to do. So Teleprompter Man relies on his bullet points but limits the questions to those that his 300 foreign policy Q&A advisers can anticipate, by excluding questions from foreign reporters.

Three thoughts.
1. According to a news story I heard this morning, much of Europe believes that they should have the right to vote in this falls American Presidential election. It seems, that from France to Italy, 60% of European believe that Obama would be good for Europe.
2. Much of Europe believes that Obama is the new JRK. (Looks as if John "I was in Vietnam" Kerry is now the old JFK!)
3. Maybe Obama should visit Germany and declare that he is a jelly donut.

198 Land Shark  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 7:21:09am

The Obamination's minions have to keep control of what he says, because if they don't people would realize how close to Dan Quayle territory this idiot is. Of course, it helps if you have an MSM desperately covering for the guy keeping his most embarrassing stuff away from the public, otherwise the word on this dufus would be out. As it is were seeing so much that some of the mainstream media are starting to think twice about the "Savior."

NObama! Keep the change.
