Ah, good ole Stinky! Thanks.
How are you doing tonight JCM?

Pleasant day. Wife had an extra day of work, so Mr. Mom, got the kitchen cleaned up in between crises. Munchette now 19 months discovered climbing onto the table, unfortunately getting down is problematic. Nice bruise on her forehead. The 3 year tried jumping off the back of the couch over his brother, one bit tongue and minor abrasions.

All in a day's work.

I am Oz, the great and powerful.

The Australian has a great op-ed piece on AGW by Dr. David Evans, who spent six years in the Australian Greenhouse Office.

When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the old ice core data, no other suspects.

The evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we were certain when it appeared we needed to act quickly? Soon government and the scientific community were working together and lots of science research jobs were created. We scientists had political support, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet.

But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

He makes four points:

1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.

Each possible cause of global warming has a different pattern of where in the planet the warming occurs first and the most. The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics. We have been measuring the atmosphere for decades using radiosondes: weather balloons with thermometers that radio back the temperature as the balloon ascends through the atmosphere. They show no hot spot. Whatsoever.

If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. [....]

(snip)

2. There is no evidence to support the idea that carbon emissions cause significant global warming. None. There is plenty of evidence that global warming has occurred, and theory suggests that carbon emissions should raise temperatures (though by how much is hotly disputed) but there are no observations by anyone that implicate carbon emissions as a significant cause of the recent global warming.

3. The satellites that measure the world's temperature all say that the warming trend ended in 2001, and that the temperature has dropped about 0.6C in the past year (to the temperature of 1980). Land-based temperature readings are corrupted by the "urban heat island" effect: urban areas encroaching on thermometer stations warm the micro-climate around the thermometer, due to vegetation changes, concrete, cars, houses. Satellite data is the only temperature data we can trust, but it only goes back to 1979. NASA reports only land-based data, and reports a modest warming trend and recent cooling. The other three global temperature records use a mix of satellite and land measurements, or satellite only, and they all show no warming since 2001 and a recent cooling.

4. The new ice cores show that in the past six global warmings over the past half a million years, the temperature rises occurred on average 800 years before the accompanying rise in atmospheric carbon. Which says something important about which was cause and which was effect.

None of these points are controversial. The alarmist scientists agree with them, though they would dispute their relevance.

The last point was known and past dispute by 2003, yet Al Gore made his movie in 2005 and presented the ice cores as the sole reason for believing that carbon emissions cause global warming. In any other political context our cynical and experienced press corps would surely have called this dishonest[.]

Although is not said in the official description of the movie, the screenplay and characters are based on the classic comedy masterpiece by the Marx Brothers - A Night at the Opera (1935).

In 1991, Paramount Pictures was preparing to release the film under the title "Lame Ducks" with a major ad campaign, playing up the fact that it was produced by David and Jerry Zucker who produced Airplane (1980) and The Naked Gun (1988), but when the brothers bailed on the project, the movie was shelved, the publicity campaign was scrapped and the title was changed to "Brain Donors". It was released in a few theaters to some positive reviews, but it really made it's money on home video where it has attracted a small cult following.

OK, thanx!

Psychiatric Emergency Department Visits on Full-Moon Nights

Our finding agrees with those of other studies that showed no association between the full moon and increased patient contacts. These studies varied in samples and methods—some counted crisis center telephone calls (2), and others counted the full moon's effects in terms of days or quarters (3). Our study focused on overnight patient contacts in a psychiatric emergency department and a three-night full-moon effect. We did not control for potentially confounding variables such as day of the week, month, year, weekend, holiday, or cloudy nights.

Peer review is usually more than one scientist who works in the field the paper is about. In this case climatology. One Physics professor as peer review is a stretch. The shame of it is that the paper could have been peer reviewed, there are parts that are good, there are parts that are at the edge. With real peer review the at the edge parts would have been fixed, and the math issue that Tim Lambert points out wouldn't be an issue, but the finding might not be as extreme.

Light-Responsive Cryptochromes from a Simple Multicellular Animal, the Coral Acropora millepora
O. Levy,1 L. Appelbaum,2 W. Leggat,1 Y. Gothlif,3 D. C. Hayward,4,6 D. J. Miller,5,6 O. Hoegh-Guldberg1,5
Hundreds of species of reef-building corals spawn synchronously over a few nights each year, and moonlight regulates this spawning event. However, the molecular elements underpinning the detection of moonlight remain unknown. Here we report the presence of an ancient family of blue-light–sensing photoreceptors, cryptochromes, in the reef-building coral Acropora millepora. In addition to being cryptochrome genes from one of the earliest-diverging eumetazoan phyla, cry1 and cry2 were expressed preferentially in light. Consistent with potential roles in the synchronization of fundamentally important behaviors such as mass spawning, cry2 expression increased on full moon nights versus new moon nights. Our results demonstrate phylogenetically broad roles of these ancient circadian clock–related molecules in the animal kingdom.

Good. Very good.

McCain is husbanding his money. Carefully. Perhaps he intends on making lots of ads. So far, though, his ads were mediocre.

Perhaps McCain can paint Obama as an internationalist with little concern or knowledge of the USA. Mock him as running for world czar, for example.

B-52 bomber crashes off Guam

HONOLULU - The Air Force says a B-52 bomber carrying six crew members has crashed off the island of Guam.

The Coast Guard says two people have been recovered from the waters. Their condition was not immediately available.

Rescue crews from the Navy, Coast Guard and local fire department are searching for the others.

Officials say the crashed occurred about 25 miles northwest of Apra Harbor.

The accident is the second for the Air Force this year on Guam.

In February, a B-2 crashed at Andersen Air Force Base in the first-ever crash of a stealth bomber. The military estimated the loss of the aircraft at $1.4 billion.

279 Grandma  Sun, Jul 20, 2008 10:27:01pm

So if I got the previous post “right”, if I don’t jump on the ObamaMessaihWagon, I must be some kinda kike loving person, as if that’s a bad thing. Well, “not for nuttin’”, I grew up more than 55 years ago in a city where I lived in a neighborhood with Jewish folks (many whose parents/grandparents wore the tattoos from their time in the concentration camps), Negro folks, Italian folks, and a host of others. We didn’t call them kikes, n*****s, wops or pollacks. They were just our crazy neighbors. And most of them were all okay people.
And back in the sixties, with the civil rights movement, all that “group identity” was supposed to make us all Americans. But now I’m thinking that for some groups, they still want to base their identity on their group affiliation. We’ve got La Raza, and the Black Congressional Congress, and the NAACP, and White Supremacists, etc. So for all the laws that tried to put an end to segregation, who is it that is still trying to segregate themselves based upon everything except individual character?
I don’t like the idea, but I really think that the American “sheeple” will probably elect the ObamaMessiah as our next president. Not by my vote, but that is probably what will happen. And that will set us back another 100 years or so…and I may not be alive then and because I’m very much in touch with my own mortality, I’ve learned that dead people don’t give a royal rat’s a$$ about anything here on Earth, so I probably won’t care then either.
Well, maybe, after the nation realizes many years from now, that the ObamaMessiah didn’t come through, the turn-around may just happen. Could it be that is just what our great nation needs to comprehend, but it probably won’t come in my lifetime? All these hyphenated groups can brag about their culture, trying to prove that they don’t want to segregate themselves from the rest of the Americans, or shove that thought down another group’s throat, but that’s really all they’re doing. Who cares what their color or culture is, or what their gripe is. I’d rather separate myself from the rotten of any culture based upon each individual’s lack of character. And that has nothing to do with their race, gender, ethnicity, religion, wealth, etc. I’ll separate myself from those of poor character, whatever it is, and not feel bad about it for one NY second. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could view others for their quality of character, rather than their group affiliation?
So thanks for entertaining Grandma’s ramblings on this lovely SC evening, and have a nice day.

With all due respect, I don't think war is gonna play a big role in this election - I really don't. As an historian, I can tell you that Americans have ALWAYS voted their pocketbooks/wallets unless we were in a state of Declared War and most saw some grave danger to the USA. And according to all the polls, the overwhelming majority don't believe that we're there now.
That's one reason why I think #255 hermeneutics had it right - McCain REALLY needs to distance himself from Bush and try to convince voters that he can fix our economic problems. While Obama's playing the foreign policy game, NOW is the time for McCain to get out there and start telling voters in every way possible, that "Senator Obama is trying to win some foreign policy credentials with a whirlwind visit to places he's already flip-flopped or been proven wrong on (Iraq and Afghanistan) and here's what I'd do about gas prices, here's what I'd do about home energy costs, food costs and the like." I imagine Obama surrounded by worshippers. It must be hard for him to get a realisitic appraisal of himself. He's not used to power. He's not used to adulation. He sure wasn't bred for this sort of position. Ergo, it is going to his head.

He's just got to be rubbing ordinary people the wrong way. Maybe not now, but slowly, surely, his vanity will show through.

Or so I pray.

People won't realize there really is a SERIOUS THREAT unless there is another attack on the home-land. Ironically, I don't think that will happen with a Republican in power. Which, in my book, is a good thing.

Lack of attack to some people means --no threat. To me, it means: strong leadership.

And I took PRIDE in that. I loved that my apartment building had whites, blacks, Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Black folks from the Carribean and etc.
But if Obama wins, THAT'S IT. I won't stand for hearing any bs about "equal rights" or "affirmative action" or "reparations" cause then I'll be able to honestly say "HEY, look a Black man was elected President of the United States without help from affirmative action, with no real knowledge or experience in LIFE much less government, so if you put your minds to it, you can do EVEN better than Obama. Go. Learn. Apply yourselves. Lift yourselves up the way President Obama did."

Lara Logan, chief foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News, has landed the coveted first interview with Barack Obama while he’s abroad, (SUnday) ...

In addition, Katie Couric will interview Obama on Tuesday in a country that the campaign does not want named for security reasons, then will anchor “Evening News” from there.

Obama’s campaign spaced out the bookings in order to build maximum suspense around his week-long, eight-country tour.

CNN and Fox News also are scheduled to get interviews while Obama is abroad.

Forty journalists, including such leading correspondents as Dan Balz of The Washington Post, will be aboard his plane for next week’s swing through Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and England.

With most anti-virus software, having more than one installed at the same time can be problematic. That restriction does not apply to browsers (much).

Hey Realwest: if you’re an historian, maybe you’ll also recall how the nation responded back in the 1940’s when Congress actually declared war upon the enemy, i.e. Nazi Germany and Japan. And our nation responded. Those who were drafted into the military (my uncles and husband) served for the DURATION of hostilities. There was no timeline. My late husband was drafted pre-Pearl Harbor and I have the document signed by Truman that says he wasn’t relieved of his reserve duties in the Army Air Corps (now the Air Force) until 1953. I recall rationing during that time. Food rationing, gasoline rationing, etc. Can today’s pampered adults even imagine that kind of burden when they’re whining about the cost of gasoline, but not knowing that even if they can afford the cost, it just “ain’t there”? And there were War Bonds, Victory Gardens, and American people of all walks of life worked together to defeat the threat. And the ObamaMessiah will fix all that so it never happens again? I don’t think so. I’m not even sure of McCain, but at least he has the history to understand, like Trotsky said, “You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you”.

Well, for those who asked, and I’m too fried and tired to reply individually, no, my late husband didn’t have to go to Korea. By then he had put in his service, and did it quite admirably, and lived to tell the tale, and went on to work for Lockheed developing their radar and guidance systems for the Polaris/Poseidon missiles and the Mark 86 tanks during the Cold War. That’s another story for another day. And as far as rationing during WWII, I had forgotten about the coffee rationing, probably because at that time I didn’t drink much coffee. But I do remember my mother buying G. Washington instant coffee with her ration coupons…. maybe that’s why I didn’t drink much coffee.

re: #372 BlueCanuck

Biggest drawback for your night shots is that it has an underpowered flash & the flash is located too close to the lens.

Inside for people (or dog) shots you could bounce the flash off the ceiling, provided the ceiling wasn't too high - a little tape and part of a white business card would do the trick.

Outside you are stuck with the light rating, if you have the instruction booklet - I bet the chart puts max distance for flash @ 8' - 10'.

A US Embassy official said Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama arrived in Iraq on Monday.
Obama was expected to meet Gen. David Petraeus as well as Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki while in the country, although aides provided few details, citing security concerns.
Obama has called for withdrawing American troops at the rate of one or two brigades per month, and an end to combat operations within 16 months.

He has said he favors leaving a residual force in the country to provide security for US personnel, train Iraqis and counter attacks by al-Qaida.

Doesn't the word lunacy come from lunar?

In my 1910 Century Encyclopedic Dictionary, the historical derivation of the word 'lunatic' says that the Latin root is indeed 'luna' or moon. That Latin root (dating back to Roman days, evidently) says that a lunatic is 'moonstruck'.

Looking up 'moonstruck', Century says, "Affected or regarded as affected in mind or health by the light of the moon; lunatic; crazed; dazed."

--So there's definitely an authoritarian dictionary correlation between 'lunatic' and the symptoms of being 'moonstruck', but DOES THAT MAKE IT SCIENCE?

It's been widely accepted for a long time, but this is one of those anecdotal phenomena -- kinda like PMS, or mercury poisoning -- that you'll never be able to do a definitive double-blind, crossover study on.

Maybe I'll be satisfied with the scoot, but quite frankly, I've never been one to be satisfied with the status quo. Besides, there's a great river run along the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers that is out of the performance envelope for the scoot. It's great to drive in the jeep; top down, but I simply can't burn through the fuel for that with a good conscience. And northern MN & WI are some of the most beautiful places in the country to ride, sans mountainous regions - deep forests and winding roads. I want something I can carry some gear and a small tent in.

Just a thought; do you have all the updates for v.6? also although win defender is weak, you can use it to locate and disable software that gets loaded at startup. Another thing to do is look in I.E. Manage Add-ons (tools menu) and look to see if suspicious or unwanted stuff is running. You can disable an add-on and then see if there's any improvement. using search for suspicious file/apps running in the task manager (press ctrl-alt-del) will let you research who wrote the file and sometimes what it's for. you can remove running processes that you're SURE aren't supposed to be running (because you deleted/uninstalled them) and then reboot to see if they come back. go to problem 'ware's website for info.
I bought a virus program that was more problems than the possibility of a virus. p.i.a. to deal with and when I uninstalled it, remnants were still around. (as an amateur programmer; I DESPISE programmer's who can't/too-lazy-to program for the user).

re: #390 Noam Sayin'

I'm entertaining the idea of a nice cruiser for purchase in the next couple years. At first, I was thinking about the Kawasaki Vulcan 900 LT Classic, but by the time I make the move, I'll probably go for the more substantial 1300.

Any thoughts?

I moved up to a Goldwing 1200, and it was like driving a bus. But I got used to it, and learned where I could push it and where I couldn't, and believe me--underneath all that luxury, there's still a mean streetbike. Then I moved back to a Steed (Shadow) 600, and it was like riding a bicycle, and not in a good way.

Get the 1300, and ride mellow. It's just nice to have the Giddyup! when you need it, and there's no substitute.

Second that, unreservedly. Power when you need it, and Kawasaki quality in the machine.

I certainly shall... IF I remember WHY I set myself a flag-mnemonic for Miguel...

See, I had a TIA myself the week of the Christmas Tsunami, and it twisted my memory a bit... But I'm honored to carry YOUR message, Joe!

I've driven the Ohio/California trip four times, all in winter months. Well worth the time and gas.
