Terror-Linked Imam Promoting Subway Ads in New York

Mon, Jul 21, 2008 at 11:20:40 am PDT

Now this is bold. Imam Siraj Wahhaj, named as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, is planning a barrage of subway train advertisements in Manhattan—during September—proselytizing for Islam: Muslim Subway Ads Linked to Terror Plots.

An Islamic group plans to blitz 1,000 subway cars with advertisements this September in a campaign being promoted by a Brooklyn imam whom federal officials have linked to a plot to blow up city landmarks.

The group says its mission is to explain the true nature of Islam to non-Muslims who believe the religion is bent on acts of violence - but Siraj Wahhaj, the inflammatory imam who appears in a promotional YouTube video for the project, has defended convicted bomb-plotters and called the FBI and CIA the “real terrorists.”

US Attorney Mary Jo White even named Wahhaj one of 170 unindicted co-conspirators in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the thwarted plan to blow up a slew of buildings. In time, this so-called democracy will crumble, and there will be nothing, and the only thing that will remain will be Islam,“ Wahhaj said in one of his sermons.

The stark, black-and-white ads of the Subway Project promote Islam with the goals of clearing up long-held misconceptions about the faith and reaching out to those interested in becoming Muslim, according to the Islamic Circle of North America, the group behind the campaign.

Timed to run during the month of Ramadan, the ads come in pairs, reading ”Q: Prophet Muhammad?“ or ”Q: Islam?“ and the corresponding answer is always ”A: You deserve to know.“

Those interested in knowing more are directed to call (877) WHY-ISLAM or to visit whyislam.org, which provide literature that teaches and proselytizes about the faith.

For more on the extensive terrorist connections of the Islamic Circle of North America (a Muslim Brotherhood front group), here’s a search for the name at The Investigative Project.

If a Christian or Jewish organization did that, there would be an uproar about the city promoting those religions. Paid for or not. I do not see a difference. We have had to remove the 10 commandments from public property, remove cresch's and other symbols of religion in many public places. I'm am guessing this will not go well in New York.

Asshat of the Day Award Winner:

PM ignoring Khadr because he's 'brown-skinned': Elmasry

The leader of one of Canada's largest Islamic groups accused Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Monday of being indifferent to Omar Khadr's plight because he's "brown-skinned" and a Muslim.

In an opinion piece released to the media, Mohamed Elmasry, national president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, wrote that Harper is "callously" unconcerned about the 21-year-old Khadr, who faces trial before a U.S. military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in October.

"In this case, Mr. Harper is playing politics because of the backdrop of Islamophobia in this country," Elmasry said. "This is where a leader comes in, to say this is really wrong and I have to correct that wrong by bringing this person [back to Canada] even if I lose some political points with Islamophobes."

Khadr's lawyers and others want Ottawa to repatriate Khadr — who was 15 in 2002 when he was accused of killing a U.S. army medic in Afghanistan — from the U.S. detention centre. But Elmasry wrote that Harper has shown a "shocking indifference" to those calls.

Elmasry contrasted Khadr's case with that of dual Canadian-British citizen William Sampson, who was freed from a death sentence in Saudi Arabia in 2003. Prior to his release, Ottawa had said it had made pleas on Sampson's behalf to the highest levels of the Saudi government.

"Why is Stephen Harper so callously indifferent to Omar Khadr's case?" Elmasry wrote. "It's painfully obvious: William Sampson is a white westerner while his fellow Canadian citizen, Omar Khadr, is brown-skinned and a Muslim."

Umm, Mo... the other difference between William Sampson & Omar Khadr is that Sampson was an innocent man obviously framed by the corrupt Saudi police, while Omar Khadr was living with & fighting for Al Qaeda.

Of course, this ad campaign will compete with the Dr. Zinzer dermatology practice ads to get folks to deal with their acne probs, the Johnny Walker scotch ads, etc.

If you're from NYC, you know what I'm talking about.

Also, I'd be interested in knowing whether they are running the ads in full car blitzes, or as partial subway cars.

Some subway cars get one ad campaign for the entire car. That way, you get nothing but the Zinzer ads on the car or Budweiser, or Johnny Walker, etc. Others get a wide assortment of ads - so you could get the Zinzer, Budweiser, and other ads.

You deserve to know:

Kill unbelievers wherever they find them (Qur'an 2:191); murder them and treat them harshly (Qur'an 9:123); fight them (Qur'an 8:65) until no other religion than Islam is left (Qur'an 2:193); humiliate them and impose on them a penalty tax if they are Christians or Jews (Qur'an 9:29); slay them if they are pagans (unbelievers) (Qur'an 9:5); crucify, or cut off their hands and feet, and expel them from the land in disgrace. Then there are these: Muslims are told that unbelievers "shall have a great punishment in world hereafter" (Qur'an 5:34); not to befriend their own fathers or brothers if they are not believers (Qur'an 3:28, 9:23); to kill their own family in the battles of Badr and Uhud, and to "strive against the unbelievers with great endeavor" (Qur'an 25:52); and be stern with them because they belong to hell (Qur'an 47:4). This Allah says all those who do not believe will go to hell (Qur'an 5:11). And the sadism gets worse: "As for the unbelievers, for them garments of fire shall be cut and there shall be poured over their heads boiling water whereby whatever is in their bowls and skin shall be dissolved and they will be punished with hooked iron rods" (Qur'an 22:9)

What person in his or her right mind would be "interested in becoming muslim"? Adam Gadahn is already in Afghanistan and American prison inmates won't be riding the subway. Are there really any other prospects?

Need justification for beating your wife and stealing welfare checks from your 2 girlfriends? Try Islam!

96 NoSubmission  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 11:50:52am

Doesn't matter. Most subway riders are doused in Ipod wires, and e-gadgets and basically shut off from reality completely. No one will notice a thing. Trust me.

97 quickjustice  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 11:50:53am

I've seen ads for Marble Collegiate (Christian) Church on the NYC subways, as well as for various other religions. Coupled with the street preachers who wander the subway stations and subway cars warning of hellfire and damnation, the Scientologists offering free "stress tests" in subway stations, and the out-and-out kooks, I'd say that the Imam will face stiff competition.

It's not an effective way to proselytize.

98 Opinionated  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 11:51:08am

If you were sitting in a subway car, and:

A Jew proclaimed Shema Yisrael- you would think "There is a Jew praying"

A Christian proclaimed Jesus is Lord- you would think "There is a Christian evangelizing"

A Muslim shouted Allah Akbar- you would think "Holy shit I'm going to die".

Speaking of Muslims from New York City:

new at zomblog:

Malcolm X Day at the Berkeley Public Library: May 12, 2008

Nothing has ever so epitomized Berkeley’s self-parodying political desolation than the spectacle that presented itself outside the Berkeley Public Library on May 12, 2008.

On that day, the library had announced it was going to celebrate Malcolm X Day (which is a city-wide holiday in Berkeley) with a public reading of The Autobiography of Malcolm X (pdf of the flyer advertising the event here).

Berkeley loves Malcolm X. Not only is his birthday a city holiday, but one of the public schools is named after him. The municipal library is bursting with Malcolm X-related books and videos, and there are posters of him on the walls. You might say he was the city’s patron saint, of a sort.

So everything was geared up for the big day. Librarians were going to take turns reading from his (ghostwritten) autobiography to adoring crowds. The flyer specified all the ways disabled citizens could take advantage of this historic performance (”To request a sign language interpreter, real-time captioning, materials in large print or Braille, or other accommodations for this event, call 510-… or 510-… (TTY). At least 5 working days will help ensure availability. Please do not wear perfume or scents to public performances. Wheelchair accessible.”).

Then reality hit.

I swung by Berkeley to record the festivities, and to my absolute amazement, no one else was in the audience. Not a single person had shown up, aside from the two homeless people seen in the photo above, sitting behind the librarian who was reading the autobiography, but not paying her the slightest attention.

One after the other, librarians came out and took turns reading from the book to an empty audience. (Some, such as the one shown above, were wearing retro hipster sunglasses, to keep in the early-’60s spirit of the event.)

What a pitiful scene. The truth is, the Old Guard of radicals who run Berkeley are stuck in their own dream world of Malcolm X and flower-power and the Vietnam War — and no one cares any more. Life has moved on, but Berkeley’s power-structure hasn’t.

(Yes, this event happened over two months ago, not today; I just finally got around to posting this photo long after the fact.)

And several years ago, mocking the Bush Administration, the New Yorker ran a full-color cover cartoon of Osama Bin Laden (a la the recent Obama cover cartoon) riding on a crowded NYC subway car, with the other passengers oblivious.

I didn't mind them and although I am bothered by what Islam stands for, one can't censor it. Besides, people will either fall for it or they won't. The NY times has been promoting Islam for ages anyway...

re: #199 Shiplord Kirel

Fanks. There's tons more on this site. I suspect this page is loaded with revisionist history: Was Islam Spread by the Sword?

One of the bizarre myths perpetuated about Islam, during the centuries of mistrust during and after the Crusades, is that Muslim armies forced people to accept Islam at the point of the sword. Unfortunately this myth survives to this day.

Many Western scholars have now repudiated this myth. The great historian De Lacy O’Leary wrote in “Islam At the Cross-roads”:

"History makes it clear however, that the legend of fanatical Muslims sweeping through the world and forcing Islam at the point of the sword upon conquered races is one of the most fantastically absurd myths that historians have ever repeated."

Indeed, it is a historical fact, that Islam spread much faster during periods of peace than in periods of war. Islam continued to spread, as it does now, when Muslims were not prevailing economically, socially or politically.

Havent been on that site for a while, it's always a sobering visit. My first thought this time was, that this is how the ROP celebrated my son's birthday yesterday:

7/20/2008 (Laghman, Afghanistan) - Six civilians are killed when Sunni hardliners blow up a fuel truck and a nearby minibus with a rocket.
7/20/2008 (Gulmarg, India) - An 8-year-old boy is among two people killed when Islamic terrorists toss a grenade into a resort.
7/20/2008 (Reasi, India) - A civilian is shot to death outside his home by Mujahideen.
7/20/2008 (Basra, Iraq) - A suspected prostitute is shot to death by fundamentalists.
7/20/2008 (Mogadishu, Somalia) - Six people are killed when Islamic hardliners attack a government patrol along a city street.

I'll make sure not to dwell on that, after all they celebrate everyone's kids' birthdays like that. Bastards.

re: #44 CapeCoddah

If a Christian or Jewish organization did that, there would be an uproar about the city promoting those religions. Paid for or not. I do not see a difference. We have had to remove the 10 commandments from public property, remove cresch's and other symbols of religion in many public places. I'm am guessing this will not go well in New York.

Christian and Jewish organizations (including churches and synagogues as well as religious charities, etc.) can and do buy ad space on NYC subways, and have done so for years. There have also been both pro-choice and pro-life ads placed, and other campaigns that are likely to piss off about 1/3 the riders while pleasing another 1/3 and leaving the last 1/3 indifferent.

Also, there are (by my recollection) something on the order of 2-3 dozen poster-display spots per subway car, times something like 6-10 cars per train depending on the line and time of day. So that works out to hundreds of display opportunities per subway train.

In contrast, how many front lobbies or courtyards does your typical City Hall building have? Answer: One of each. How many display cases are available in the typical front lobby of a courthouse? Let's say 5, of which 1 or 2 at most might be available for use by religious groups on a rotating basis.

And as for that "rotating basis" -- that's assuming that there's a willingness in the first place to rotate the religious displays. Which is certainly likely to be the case nowadays, but that's thanks to years of lawsuits brought by members of minority religions for their right to equal access.

And in some cases officials resisted the lawsuits quite bitterly, because they were as stupid as most elected officials tend to be, and saw nothing at all wrong with promoting Jesus and only Jesus on city property -- because, after all, this nation was founded by Christians like George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, and besides that, we all know that Christianity is the Truth and all the other religions are lies.

In short, allowing placement of religious ads on a government-funded subway is qualitatively very very different from many of those "creches in city buildings" cases.

261 lifeofthemind  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 1:52:27pm

We are not Europe or Canada. In the USA free speech should allow us to counter this with advertisements right next to the Imam’s that refute each of his falsehoods and give the truth. It takes money and the will to fight the legal challenges the NY City subways will put up to keep non-PC adverts out.

But my inner 13 year old is going to have his say on this one I am afraid.

I think I would favor small adhesive stickers with quotes from Muslim leaders advocating violence; showing contempt for Christians, Jews, and other infidels; and generally promoting barbarianism. If you just post the bomb-turban Moho cartoon, it's going to invite whining about "hate crimes" from Muslims, with non-Muslim liberals eagerly adding their voices to the whine chorus.

I might also prepare a separate bunch of stickers with Koranic quotes illustrating, for example, that the Muslim "Isa" was quite different from the Christian "Jesus" -- just as a response to have available in case some of the posters do the "People of the Book" thing and claim that Islam venerates most of the major prophets of Judaism and Christianity. However, I believe that any such stickers should be kept far away from the stickers talking about Koranic violence, to avoid sending mixed messages.

Why? Because here in America, we don't recognize anyone's right to incite physical violence against people of other religions, but we DO honor an individual's right to hold religious views that others might consider "heretical."

So if Muslim Americans want to say that Jesus was a prophet of Islam, was never crucified, wore a green mohawk, and lived in a pineapple under the Sea of Galilee, they have a Constitutional right to do so. They just don't have a right to say, without being challenged, that their image of Jesus is more or less compatible with that of mainstream Christianity.

And in the Word Trade Center Attack in1993.

If we have cut-off Hamas then we should also cut-off ICNA.

From what I can tell ICNA this funding the project. They are linked directly to Hamas. Hamas is a terror organization. Here more on the financial network:

...where do the funds raised at this and other ICNA functions go? Hamas was placed on the U.S. State Department's list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs), in January of 1995. According to the United States government, it is illegal to provide financial support to any group found on that list. Yet, information ascertained by this author suggests that one Muslim organization, the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), has done this and has gotten away with it. Today, ICNA acts as an umbrella organization for South Asian-oriented mosques and Islamic centers throughout the United States and Canada. Nevertheless, the group's relationship with JI still remains intact.

The domain registrant for ICNA's National website, as well as the website of the organization's dawaa (religious outreach) division, Why Islam (WI), is farrukh.net. Named for current ICNA National Director Raza Farrukh, farrukh.net was originally a mirror site for Jamaat-e-Islami's media division. On January 26, 2006, after Hamas won a landslide victory in the Palestinian Legislative Council elections, JI issued a statement praising the group and its dead leaders. It read in part, "Jamaat-e-Islami ameer [President] Qazi Hussain Ahmad has termed the election victory of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) in Palestine a major development for the Palestinian and resistance movement. [Via phone with the head of Hamas Khaled Mashaal], Ahmad paid rich tributes to the sacrifices of Sheikh Ahmad Yasin, Dr. Abdul Aziz Al-Rintisi and other Palestinian martyrs which paved the way for today success."
