A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?'

Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I am the head of the
family, so call me President. Your mother is the administrator of the
money, so we call her the Congress. We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People. The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.
Now think about that and see if it makes sense.'

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now.'

The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.'

The little boy replies, 'The President is screwing the Working Class while the Congress is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit.

Fights or perceived fights jack up the ratings.. and boy Indycar racing really needs the rating right now..At least nobody was hitting and punching people.. ( unlike the way my kids used to act to each other every day.)

Let me guess.

American flag lapel pins are now required?

Reporters traveling overseas with Sen. Barack Obama were thrown a bit of curve last week when the campaign emailed a "dress code" for Israel and Jordan. Aides had passed along as a courtesy the list that they had distributed to their staff to follow. But some of the tips raised a few eyebrows, particularly among the female reporters.

"Do not wear green." (Explained later as the color of Hamas)

"Do not wear nail polish."

"Women should only wear a limited amount of jewelry."

"Shoulders and arms must be fully covered (no strapless tops, no tank tops, no short sleeve shirts.)"

"Closed-toe shoes, women should also wear stockings."

At historical and religious sites, a suit or slacks should be worn, shoulders and arms must be covered ("no strapless tops, no tanks tops no short sleeve shirts"), shoes might need to be removed, and women may be asked to cover their heads and "should be prepared with a scarf/pashmina," the email stated.

/for Israel?

Probably untrue, but irrelevant if its true or not.
Oil is a commodity.
If we don't buy from place "A" but instead from place "B", someone else will buy from place "A".

So long as there are actors who will buy from the cheapest available source (and there are plenty, in this case), this will exert economic pressure to force the prices of "A" and "B" to converge.

In short, not buying Saudi oil (for example) doesn't hurt the Saudis because someone else will buy it at the same price.

If you want to hurt the Saudis you have to either increase the total amount of oil on the global market (thereby driving down prices), or alternatively, come up with alternative fuels/energy, accomplishing the exact same thing.

80 looking closely  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 12:53:18pm

re: #53 Creeping Eruption

Lets apply this at the individual level.

Lets say Exxon gas stations only sell domestically drilled and refined gasoline, and Citgo only Venezuelan.

Lets say everywhere there is one companies' gas station, across the street there is another.

Now lets say a fraction of people absolutely refuse to purchase gasoline from Citgo. In response, Exxon will be able to afford to jack up its prices (because there will be increased demand). Citgo, by having fewer customers, will have to reduce its prices (to stimulate demand).

With consistently lower prices, Citgo will attract plenty of buyers who don't give a rat's behind about where the money goes, but just need to fill their tanks as cheaply as possible so they can have cash left over to feed their kids.

These people will avoid Exxon and patronize Citgo, tending to re-equalize the prices.

Again, the way to hurt the "bad" oil producing countries is to come up with other sources of oil, or alternative energy sources, or preferably both.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

Follow, follow, follow, follow, follow,
Follow, follow, follow, follow.

We all must remember, without being tender
To those who whine we harsh their mellow
We all must remember, or else they will render
Our guarantees of freedom hollow.
We must remember and safeguard an ember
Of the fires of September that made us bellow
If we remember, whate'er they engender
We all will withstand the storms
And follow.

Damn good.  When do we collect the Lizard Song Book?

Not sure how the links at the top of the page work, but whomever paraphrased the Slate review of Generation Kill did a rather poor job. The skittle 'product placement' remark was made by the author jest as an example of how well the producers got even the smallest details correct. As for comparing our soldiers to Brooklyn gangsters, please note that the gangsters to whom the author refers were from Baltimore, not Brooklyn (fans of the Wire would know this). Whether the comparison is valid I'll leave it the reader to decide.

All three of my nieces are married to or were married to Recon Marines...two of whom were in Alpha company.. Bravo companies sister in GenKill. The two retired Marines who I still have contact with give the producers 100% for accuracy and realism, though they give Wright poor marks for his 'recollection' of certain events.

Comments suggest Iraq, Obama agree on U.S. troop timeframe

In reality, the article says this:

Maliki told Obama he did not want foreign troops in Iraq for an undefined period but that conditions on the ground would dictate their withdrawal, the Iraqi leader's office said.

And, of course, here's another example of hide the Senator:

Obama has scheduled no news conferences in Iraq.

Exhibition Place in Toronto used to have an outdoor stadium. Only the highest (nosebleed) seats had some shelter. (That's where my friends and I were seated.)

We were hit with a huge thunderstorm that evening. Elton's pilot wanted to turn around but he insisted that they continue and land in Toronto.

The torrential rain and strong wind didn't let up until close to the end of the show. The stage didn't have much of a covering (I can't remember how much) but that didn't stop Elton. Most of the people in the audience were soaking wet, without umbrellas, but they all went crazy for him. He pulled out all the stops and played an extra-long concert.

He really appreciated the audience's response. This was in 1986 or so, when his career wasn't on a high. I loved it because he sang some songs that hadn't been hits but had meant a lot to me (I used to have all of his albums).

He's a real showman.

Pat Condell has a new video rant up on Youtube.

143 kansas  Mon, Jul 21, 2008 1:23:12pm

Acceptable for the Times? Just don't criticize the Messiah.

In January 2007, when General David Petraeus took command in Iraq, he
called the situation "hard" but not "hopeless." Today, 18 months later,
violence has fallen by up to 80% to the lowest levels in four years, and
Sunni and Shiite terrorists are reeling from a string of defeats. The situation
now is full of hope, but considerable hard work remains to consolidate our
fragile gains.

Progress has been due primarily to an increase in the number of troops and a
change in their strategy. I was an early advocate of the surge at a time when
it had few supporters in Washington. Our troops have performed brilliantly in lowering the level of violence, and political progress has resulted. The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad has recently certified that, as one news article put it, "Iraq has met all but three of 18 original benchmarks set by Congress last year to measure security, political and economic progress." Even more heartening has been progress that's not measured by the benchmarks. More than 90,000 Iraqis, many of them Sunnis who once fought against the government, have signed up as Sons of Iraq to
fight against the terrorists. Nor do they measure Prime Minister Nouri al
Maliki’s new-found willingness to crack down on Shiite extremists in Basra
and Sadr City -- actions that have done much to dispel suspicions of
sectarianism. The success of the surge has resulted in Prime Minister Maliki has said
that he would like a plan for the eventual withdrawal of U.S. troops at some
unspecified point in the future. That has been my position all along.

The Iraqi Army will be equipped and trained by the middle of next year, but this does
not mean that they will then be ready to secure their country without a good deal of help. The Iraqi Air Force, for one, still lags behind, and no modern army can operate without air cover. The Iraqis are also still learning how to conduct planning, logistics, command and
control, communications, and other complicated functions needed to support
frontline troops.

I do not favor a permanent U.S. presence. A partial withdrawal has already occurred with the departure of five "surge" brigades, and more withdrawals can take place as the security situation improves. As we draw down in Iraq, we can beef up our presence on other battlefields,
such as Afghanistan, without fear of leaving a failed state behind. I have said
that I expect to welcome home most of our troops from Iraq by the end of
my first term in office, in 2013. But I have also said that any draw-downs must be based on a realistic assessment of conditions on the ground, not on an artificial timetable crafted for domestic political reasons.

During the course of eight visits to Iraq, I have heard many times from
our troops what Major General Jeffrey Hammond, commander of coalition
forces in Baghdad, recently said: that leaving based on a timetable would be
"very dangerous."

The danger is that extremists supported by al-Qaeda and Iran could stage a
comeback, as they have in the past when we've had too few troops in Iraq.
If we don't win the war, our enemies will. A triumph for the terrorists would be a disaster for us. That is something I will not allow to happen as president. Instead I will continue implementing a proven counterinsurgency strategy not only in Iraq but also in Afghanistan with the goal of creating stable, secure, self-sustaining democratic allies.

re: #158 Alaska Kim

I remember that exact thing happening when we vacationed in Florida several years ago. There were a lot of sudden, torrential downpours that would flood the parking lot or road, and just as suddenly the rain would stop and the sky would clear up.

When I lived in Montreal, a rainstorm would usually clear the air of humidity. In Toronto, it's usually still humid after a storm. Bah!

I don't think we've had a lot of smog alerts or air advisories so far this summer. It can get really bad for people with breathing problems.

Bin Laden's driver Mr. Hamdan--who may KNOW how Bin Laden escaped our capturing him in Tora Bora--has received support from American pro bono firms for years, trying to get these perps known since the CLinton administration into our civilian judicial system.

I would love for Hamdan's three week military trial in Guantanamo to shame democrats for wanting to repeat the Clinton years, Al Qaeda-goes-scott free approach to hunting down mass murderers of Americans.

Ask you fellow Americans what they think of Bin Laden's drivers' guilt & trial. Start the conversation we need to have before the election.

Charles:
Sixty three years ago today John Scopes was found guilty:

After eight days of trial, it took the jury only nine minutes to deliberate. Scopes was found guilty on July 21 and ordered to pay a US$100.00 fine (approximately $1,165 when adjusted for inflation). Raulston imposed the fine before Scopes was given an opportunity to say anything about why the court should not impose punishment upon him and after Neal brought the error to the judge's attention the defendant spoke for the first and only time in court: [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

According to Wiki, you share a border with British Columbia. I lived in Victoria a long time ago and it was never humid there.

I remember the humidity hitting me like a wall when I got off the airplane in Toronto.

I was discussing this recently with someone from Somalia. She said it gets hotter there but it's a dry heat, so it's easier to bear. I've heard that about a lot of places.

The HAWALA system of terror finance (moneylaundering) underground banking.

Remember the fake charities that send money back to the Holy Land for "good works"?

Interpol says:

[Link: www.interpol.int...]

Example: How does hawala work?

Hawala works by transferring money without actually moving it. In fact 'money transfer without money movement' is a definition of hawala that was used, successfully, in a hawala money laundering case.

An effective way to understand hawala is by examining a single hawala transfer. In this scenario, which will be used throughout this paper, Abdul is a Pakistani living in New York and driving a taxi. He entered the country on a tourist visa, which has long since expired. From his job as a taxi driver, he has saved $5,000 that he wants to send to his brother, Mohammad, who is living in Karachi (3).....

More doping scandals from the Tour de France.
Seems to me that the idea of doing 'anything to win' creeps into all endeavors.
When morals are divorced from anything but 'what works for me' it has to be expected.
I am gratified that the organizers are being active in checking up on the leaders.
They can't be trusted.
Why should anyone trust them?
Therefore they must be randomly tested.
I just with magazines like Nature and other top-notch science journals would continue the old stand-by of peer review.
They seem content to become PR release mediums.

Mama Winger, if you are lurking or around, I need some of your veterinary expertise. My dog was just dx with an autoimmune disease. She is taking 2 different meds 3xday. Ordinarily this would be no problem because she eats anything, but 1 pill is a very large capsule and I can't hide it in food very well. Should I just stick it way back in her throat and somehow force it down? UGH. I will call the vet's office tomorrow, but I hate for her to miss any doses as her paws are bad. I usually lurk on and off through the day. Thanks. She is a small dog 15 lbs. see avatar.

Excerpt from a "Dick Morris Newsletter"
Nobody is reporting this, Nobody knows this--surely people if they knew would reject Obama's health care suicide pact with the American economy. Can this possibly be accurate?

Quote: "Obama has said, proudly and often, "I am going to give health insurance to 47 million Americans who are now without coverage." But are they "Americans?"

That 47 million statistic includes illegal immigrants - who virtually all lack insurance. In fact, about one in four of those lacking insurance is here illegally. And they are, by far, the group most in need of health insurance.

About 15 million of the remaining uninsured are eligible for Medicaid but haven't signed up - mainly because they haven't gotten sick. When they do, they enroll in Medicaid and we pick up the full tab for their health care relatively cheaply. (About 80 percent of each Medicaid dollar goes to nursing-home care for the elderly, only about 20 percent for the medical needs of the poor.)

The rest of the uninsured pool? Virtually all the children are eligible for the State Children's Health Insurance Program. Some aren't enrolled because the parents haven't bothered, but most are eligible. That leaves about 20 million uninsured adults who are US citizens or legal immigrants. There are far better ways to handle their needs than to turn our entire health-care system upside down." end quote
