Not sure if I understand the quote...

I think the "fat women on welfare" story should have been on the front page of Fox News yesterday.

As I get older, I find I have fewer & fewer dreams at night.
Or I just don't remember them when I wake.

Do we dream less when we get older,
or do we lose the dreams like we lose car keys?

I guess forgotten things are screwed if you don't remember your dreams.

There's another Elias Canetti quote that relates to that story:
"Justice requires that everyone should have enough to eat. But it also requires that everyone should contribute to the production of food."

Remember my report called Racist Literature Distributed in Berkeley from a year and a half ago? Well, waaaayyyyyy after the fact, someone finally tracked down the exact cartoon that was being distributed in Berkeley that day. I posted it in the report just now in an update, with the caption,

[UPDATE:] zombietime reader Paul G. finally located this orginal version of the flyer shown in the TV report. This is what the color version of it looks like. I'll let you decide if it's anti-Semitic or not.

It only confirms my thesis (spelled out in the second half of the report) that left-wing hate and right-wing hate have become indistinguishable!

Anyone notice over at "The Corner" at NRO, where some are debating the usefulness and/or importance of the Obama Waffle over the surge and PM Maliki's comments? Peter Wehner has the best of it.

No wonder I remain adamantly independent. Sometimes I wonder if Republicans have their heads in the game at all.

OK, so I went over to Davids Medienkritik - stone cold sober (if you don't count being carb-drunk from a pizza dinner) and right on the front page, as usual, David nails it:

Finally: It is particularly striking that so many Europeans proclaim such affection for Obama - without really being able to specifically explain why they like him so much. Simply being the leading anti-Bush is enough to be loved in Europe - yet it is the Americans who are continually accused of harboring a black-and-white view of the rest of the world.

I think it's cool we have marsupials, but it's hard to look at them and NOT think "Holy crap, a giant rat!"

When I was a kid, we were driving to my grandma's. Hit a whole family of possums crossing the road--they flew like bowling pins. Sad, but impressive--the papa possum led his family straight out in front of us...

re: #60 Occasional Reader

Oh, now, I didn't say it was crap, either. As I understand it (never fired one); incredibly reliable; high rate of fire; very compact. Just very hard to control.

I have fired an MP5; and I can see why that became the Uzi replacement. It's like you will a certain number of bullets to hit a certain spot.

I've fired the MP5, the Thompson, the Uzi, and the Sten, and of the four I shot the best groups with the Uzi. The Uzi was also the easiest to control the trigger timing on to get a nice consistent 3 round burst. It also has the best ergonomics...since the mag well is in the pistol grip it's very quick to change mags as we tend to be able to intuitively sense where our other hand is, if you understand what I am saying. Makes mag changes easier in the dark.

The Sten was the most fun though, but then I saw "The Guns of Navarone" way to many times as a kid.

Some not-so-bright spark thought it would be a good idea to bring the Australian Brush tailed possum into NZ about 120 years ago to establish a fur trade. We now have about 70 million of the little bastards munching through 7,000 tonnes of green matter every night. They make for a great night time hunt for the kids.

Dayum!

Consider if you will all the well known phrases in this little ditty...

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action. - Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd.

Shakey had some chops.

And now I go to sleep, perchance to dream.

Sure, but I think even before that, and to the extent the subgun is still used now, the Uzi was phased out in favor of (usually) the MP5 (and more recently MP7 and others). I know that's the case for the USSS, and I'm pretty sure it's mostly true for the IDF, too.

re: #84 razorbacker

At least they're not going to use foodstocks.

Interesting.

More on their web site:

INEOS

The INEOS Bio process comprises three main steps:
1. Gasification of the prepared organic carbon material using oxygen to produce synthesis gas. The hot synthesis gas is quenched and cleaned. Heat is recovered to generate renewable power.

2. The cleaned, cooled synthesis gas is passed into a fermentation process, where it is consumed by anaerobic bacteria (the biocatalyst) and turned into ethanol. The fermentation broth contains a carefully controlled mixture of nutrients to deliver a reliably high yield of ethanol production. The bacteria achieve a very high selectivity to ethanol. The high yield and high selectivity translate to an outstanding process efficiency and leading production economics. The off-gas from the fermenter is used to produce additional power and heat.

3. The ethanol solution is purified to make anhydrous ethanol (>99.7% ethanol). This is subsequently blended into gasoline (e.g. at 5% ethanol concentration for E5 or at 85% ethanol concentration for E85 as required for the local renewable road transport fuel market).

Man Foiled During Attempted Robbery At Tacoma Restaurant

A man who entered an upscale Tacoma restaurant and attempted to rob a group of people dining in a private seating area was foiled when a member of the group pulled a handgun on him, police told KIRO 7 Eyewitness News.

[snip]

"Before we knew it, (the doctor) pulls his gun out and told the guy, 'Get away, get out of this restaurant now.' The guy looked back and (the doctor) said, 'If you look back again, I'm going to shoot you,'" said Weatherby.

I'm proud of him, but I'm worrried......why could'nt he just joined the Coast Guard?

Got a call today---caller ID said United States Gov.---I thought what in the world---when I answered a man asked for my son by name and I told him he was not here at the time and could I take a message. He was a recruiter and was calling all the Seniors from my sons school. He will be calling back next week. My son had talked to someone last year who had came to the school.
After I hung up, my hubby said I should have asked him if they allow those with ADHD to sign up. It is something me and him have discussed but have not discussed with our son the possibility of him not being able to join due to this, because he already has enough problems due to this disorder, and don't want to take this dream away from him if don't have to.

*Inside* the hotel... well, the hotel pool area, anyway. I was taking a midnight swim. I also saw some another evening at... gah, that area that they've turned into a nightlife strip but that used to be US military. Defiinitely raccoons, although a leaner model than their North American cousins.

Shalit for Barghouti - Richard Silverstein FAR LEFT progressive zionist

I’ll trade you 300 Hamas activists and a Barghouti for a Shalit. The bartering now going on preceding a potential prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas reminds one of teenagers trading baseball cards.

According to the report, Israel will free Barguti, Fatah’s former secretary-general in the West Bank, and the Hamas officials as part of the burgeoning exchange deal with the Islamist Hamas group in return for captive IDF soldier Gilad Shalit…
Israel has given its consent, in principle, to the release of 300 Palestinian prisoners, including Hamas leaders Hassan Salame, Abdullah Barguti and Ibrahim Hamed.

Note how talks about Saadat who was in a Palestinian prison sordove for murdering Minister Zeevi a few years ago.

Should Israel free Saadat it should be terribly embarrassing for the Olmert government and IDF, since a year or so ago they orchestrated a Jericho prison “break-in” that “liberated” (or “kidnapped” depending on your perspective) Saadat from a Palestinian prison in order to spirit him to an Israeli prison so as to ensure he would not be freed. If they free him I’ll be only too happy to republish the photos of Israel demolishing the Palestinian prison to ensure the dangerous criminal never saw the light of day.

He almost is gleeful about this guy getting out and couldn't care less that a kid on IDF guard duty is in a Hamas prison and to obtain his freedom Israel will have to release cold blooded murderers... to him he is bemused by the moral equivalence game.

Sure, but I think even before that, and to the extent the subgun is still used now, the Uzi was phased out in favor of (usually) the MP5 (and more recently MP7 and others). I know that's the case for the USSS, and I'm pretty sure it's mostly true for the IDF, too.

I don't think the IDF ever used any German guns except for the Mauser 98k's they had in the 1948 war of independence, and even those were not actually made in Germany but in occupied Czechoslovakia.
They are quite popular with collectors...a lot of people find it quite ironic to have a rifle with both the Nazi Waffenamt and IDF Star of David proof stamps.

The UZI btw was an Israeli improvement upon a Czech submachinegun they also used in the 1948 war, the VZ25.

Of course he won't debate..... no teleprompter

I have always wondered in that one speech where he gets all mixed up and then says he can hear himself...if he really meant he couldn't hear the someone talking in his ear telling him what to say?

Uh, what is Benzodiazepine ?

Medications like Xanax, Clonazepam, Valium. Withdrawal is characterized by elevated blood pressure and high risk for seizures.
Come to think of it, barbiturate withdrawal carries a high seizure risk too.

Last night I dreamt that I was visiting Ankara, Turkey -- a city where I actually lived for a few years when I was in elementary school. Although the dream-Ankara was initially very convincing and had some architectural landmarks from my memories of real-life Ankara, I began to suspect that I was only dreaming when I noticed that all of the stores had signs in Russian rather than in Turkish!

(In real life, I can read по-руccки with pretty good fluency, but I only know a couple dozen words Türkçe'de.)

Anyway, I'm only mentioning it because I love the experience of having a dream turn "lucid" like this.

Nope. Unless you have a pre-existing condition. Withdrawl is of course very nasty, but will not in and of itself cause one to expire.

Opiate withdrawal will make you crampy, vomit and sweaty.

Whoa, yes! I had two seizures brought about by Valium withdrawal when I broke four ribs about 5 years or so ago.
I was sitting up in bed, looking at all the med's I had been prescribed, saw morphine and said "yep, I'm sure as hell in pain" saw valium (10mgs 6 times a day) and said "hell I'm not anxious about anything" so I just stopped taking 'em.
Next morning I had a seizure but fortunately had a "nurse attendant" with me and he gently rocked me out of it, called an ambulance and they had to pull the bus over and get everyone out cause I was having another seizure - don't remember that one, but do remember the first seizure. ER docs said "aha! Valium induced seizure." When my doc got to the hospital I never heard him yell like that (at ME) in the over 25 years I'd been his patient - things like "why didn't you call me before stopping taking them" and silly stuff like that. I honestly answered by saying "cause I'm a dumbass, I reckon!" He agreed.
But Valium withdrawal can sure cause seizures - didn't know it could cause death though.

Raccoons. So cute, I thought, until a midnight raider carried away one of my favorite ducks. Now my ducks live in the Duck Fort Knox. And when I see a raccoon squished in the road (a not uncommon sight in these parts), I will say, "now there's another raccoon that isn't going to bother my ducks." My kids just groan when I say this, because I will say it even when I am something like 2 hrs. away from home, just for the satisfaction of saying it.

Oh ! I guess we could throw in Vatican City !

Good one.

Reminds me of a joke told to me by a friend of my grandfather's when I was a kid:

The Pope was in ill health and near death, but his life could be saved if he could find a replacement for his heart. So one of the clergymen working for the Pope went to a large crowd in Vatican City and told them about the Pope's condition. All were saddened and said they would give their lives so that the Pope could have his. He said, that's encouraging, because the Pope needs a new heart, and he needs a donor, but it is too much to ask that anyone give up their heart for the Pope. And then all of the Italians in the square said "Taka my heart! Taka my heart! Taka my heart!" As they did this both hands came out ward from the chest into an open gesture with head tilting upward. [You know how Italians use their hands when speaking] The clergy man said no, I can not do this. The crowd insisted with more passion "TAKA MY HEART!" , "TAKA MY HEART!". Okay, the clergy man says, your kindness is beyond words. He says, but I can't take all of you, so what I'll do is throw this feather out into the crowd and whomever it lands on shall be the one who gives his heart. With that he throws the feather out into the crowd and the Italians shout with passion "TAKA MY HEAR!" (blow) "TAKA MY HEART!" (blow) "TAKA MY HEART!" (blow)

Thanks I will---been doing some reading on the internet regarding this and can't come up with answer. Yes , but no. Can but can't. One said can get waiver if he is sr, does not take meds for one to two sem., is mainstreamed, no lesson plans and can take timed test. He has always been mainstreamed and has never had any special lesson plans or had any problem with timed testing. He doesn't do to well on test, but all way round ok in school. Has never been in trouble in school or with the law, and that was two other things pointed out in articles I have read. It says recruiter will tell them no, but there is ways if they can pass the DOD test. Guess we will have to discuss this with him and see about no meds last half of school, if he can do it.
I am sure you are going to miss him a lot.....No study...you will need that room....he will be back on leaves and will love to have his room still like it was.

Anyone notice over at "The Corner" at NRO, where some are debating the usefulness and/or importance of the Obama Waffle over the surge and PM Maliki's comments? Peter Wehner has the best of it.

Over the last year or so I've become increasingly frustrated with NRO... a considerable number or their contributors/entries do seem to have developed a strong tendency to want to generate/second the standard campaign talking points.

Agree with Wehner that on the face of it Maliki's comments help Obama. However, they might also entrap Obama. We are still over 3 months from the general election, and if Maliki has a change of heart about these matters then Obama will be on the hot seat to also change to whatever Maliki might decide.

I received a letter from Obama today, offering to double my donation to the DSCC so they can elect the biggest Democratic Senate majority in the history of mankind and "truly change America." I'm contemplating sending back the return envelope so they at least have to pay the postage on it.

load as much crap into the envelope as you can (heavier = more postage). additional thing to remember is, if you fill it with shredded paper, etc.... it will clog the automated machine that opens all these replies, and may even take out a few donations with it, as they unclog the jam that's created.

Obama's 143 Days of Senate Experience

Posted By Cheri Jacobus On May 5, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Just how much Senate experience does Barack Obama have in terms of actual work days? Not much.

From the time Barack Obama was sworn in as a United State Senator, to the time he announced he was forming a Presidential exploratory committee, he logged 143 days of experience in the Senate. That's how many days the Senate was actually in session and working.

After 143 days of work experience, Obama believed he was ready to be Commander In Chief, Leader of the Free World, and fill the shoes of Abraham Lincoln, FDR, JFK and Ronald Reagan.

143 days -- I keep leftovers in my refrigerator longer than that.

In contrast, John McCain's 26 years in Congress, 22 years of military service including 1,966 days in captivity as a POW in Hanoi now seem more impressive than ever. At 71, John McCain may just be hitting his stride.

COAST GUARD CUTTER EAGLE TO BE FEATURED IN SAILING FESTIVAL

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle will lead 35 other vessels as they sail beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and along the city's waterfront Wednesday as part of the Festival of Sail.

The parade begins at noon and will be visible from nearly any downtown San Francisco waterfront location.

The Eagle has been in service within the Coast Guard since 1946, serving as a training platform for cadets and officer candidates to learn leadership, teamwork, seamanship and navigation skills. It is the only square-rigged sailing vessel still actively serving in the U.S. military.

In addition to San Francisco, the Eagle will be visiting five other West Coast ports, including San Diego; Los Angeles; Astoria, Ore.; Tacoma, Wash.; and Victoria, British Columbia.

I spent 8 weeks in 1978 on the Eagle sailing from Connecticut to Gitmo then through the Panama Canal to Acapulco, ending in San Diego. Thrill of a lifetime. Any SF or Norcal lizards in the area, try to check it out. I have sources for pictures, but would love to see yours.

re: #397 zombie

Eventually someone called the park rangers, while the seal turned to give me a pleading look, as if trying to communicate that it had come up onto the beach to seek help from the humans.

"Am I having a bad day, or what?!"

/poor seal! :-(

re: #404 zombie

Not quite sure what you mean, but that's OK!

I'm just getting a lot of links and emails coming out of Bangladesh over the last several hours, and I simply wanted to make sure they were authentic fans of the Mohammed Image Archive and not just Islamic hackers trying to get get me to visit a phony site in order to find out my IP address or something like that. Conclusion: they're authentic fans.

with SBC/ATT, you call tech support, and a cheerful, non American accent ansewrs, insisting that they are here CONUS. you can dance with the difficult to understand syntax, and the absolute inability to deviate from the script, or you can demand tier 2, and get someone here who might possibly listen to & understand WTF you're saying.......

OK, all you late-nighters, you hit the jackpot this time:

Your prize for staying up all night is the privelege of being the very first people to see the latest zomblog posting, uploaded just moments ago:

Injured seal on nude beach

When this is later voted "Most Popular Blog Post of All Time," you can proudly declare, "I saw it first!"

That was so sad - I cried, I'm afraid.
