'Stop construction on mass grave site'

A Jewish group is asking the Ukrainian government to stop construction on the site of a grave containing the remains of some 26,000 victims of the Holocaust.

A developer has begun building what it believes will be a shopping mall on the site of a burial ground, the Jewish community in Odessa said in a letter Wednesday.

When construction workers began digging they found bones, skulls and children's toys, said Avrohom Wolf, the chief rabbi for Odessa and southern Ukraine.

Wolf said the builder had removed all the remains it dug out and said he has no clue where to search for them.

On Wednesday, the group sent a letter to Ukraininan Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, asking that she intervene.

Was he pandering then?
Or is he pandering now?

I get a fair amount of spousal flack for spending a too much time keeping up with the political scene. "What difference will it make?" "When are you going to fill out that school paperwork?!"

She has a point.

So what could I do that would make a difference?

So here is my idea of a single video that would cause people across the political spectrum to not vote for Barack Obama.

Barack Obama has taken a lot of leftist positions to cater to the left wing back of the Democrat party.
Recently he has taken a sharp right turn, trying to make himself palatable to the average American.

Hearing his earlier stuff will turn off average Americans
Hearing his current stuff will turn off hard leftists.
Putting them together will turn off any voter who appreciates character.

Narrator: Pander: "To cater to the lower tastes and desires of others"

Narrator: [Discussion of Obama voting for every gun control measure]
[Film clip of Obama or campaign staff saying that the DC Gun Ban was constitutional with the date on the bottom]

[Film clip of Obama with "Seven months later" on the bottom]
Obama: [agreeing with the Supreme Court decision]

Narrator: Was he pandering then? Or is he pandering now?

Rev Write: G-D America

[Film clip of Obama with the date on the bottom]
Obama: I could no more disown Rev Write than my own grandmother

[Film clip of Obama with "Two Weeks Later" on the bottom]
Obama: [disowning Rev Write for "dissing" him]

Narrator: Was he pandering then? Or is he pandering now?

[Film clip of Obama with the date and "Speech before the American Israel Public Affairs Committee" on the bottom]
Obama: Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel - and it must remain undivided

[Film clip of Obama with "One day later" on the bottom]
Obama: [contradicting the undivided Jerusalem speech]

Narrator: Was he pandering then? Or is he pandering now?

[Another leftist clip or quote from his books]

[The corresponding contradiction of that clip]

Narrator: Was he pandering then? Or is he pandering now?

Etc.

Edwards went out of the hotel briefly with Rielle, they were observed by the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and then went back to her room, where he stayed until attempting to sneak out of the hotel unseen at 2:40 a.m. (PST). But when he emerged alone from an elevator into the hotel basement he was greeted by several reporters from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER.

Senior NATIONAL ENQUIRER Reporter Alexander Hitchen asked Edwards why he was visiting Rielle and whether he was ready to confirm that he was the father of her baby.

Shocked to see a reporter, and without saying anything, Edwards ran up the stairs leading from the hotel basement to the lobby. But, spotting a photographer, he doubled back into the basement. As he emerged from the stairwell, reporter Butterfield questioned him about his hookup with Rielle.

Edwards did not answer and then ran into a nearby restroom. He stayed inside for about 15 minutes, refusing to answer questions from the NATIONAL ENQUIRER about what he was doing in the hotel. A group of hotel security men eventually escorted him from the men's room, while preventing the NATIONAL ENQUIRER reporters from following him out of the hotel.

Imbeciles come to mind.

It is not the borders that make us what we are, rich affluent, powerful. It not the resources within those borders. It the idea we are founded on that make us so.

Yet when we export that idea, so other can be like us and ease the divide they yell imperialism.

They focus on the material (see ch. 1 Conscience of a Conservative B. Goldwater), failing to recognize the material came out of the ideological which we freely share.

Borders anywhere are the enemies of progressives everywhere. Here's just another example I happened across this week:

Mission statement
Unbound aims to support charitable operations in fields that promote self-determination by working to equalize the distribution of opportunities available to those who wish to help themselves and their families. This foundation welcomes innovation and creativity in addressing the fundamental inequity of opportunity globally.

Charles, thank you for banning the apologists for the serbian genocide. War criminals have no place for redemption. I studied Yugoslavian history in college and that conflict had a lot for to do with ancient resentment and hatred stemming from the battle of Kosovo in 1389 where the native serbs were defeated by the invading Ottomans, and less about the Islamization of Serbia and Bosnia. While it is certainly true that if a US State gained a critical mass of muslim population and tried to secede there would be war, we would hope that we at least would fight with honor and not resort to the barbarous tactics that the sebs and the muslims practised.

NEW YORK (AP) - New York Times Co. says its second-quarter earnings fell 82 percent from the year-ago quarter boosted by a one-time gain. Meanwhile, print advertising revenue continued to shrink.
The New York-based newspaper publisher says its quarterly net income dropped to $21.1 million, or 15 cents per share, which included 11 cents per share in buyout costs.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected income of 22 cents per share in the latest quarter. Analyst estimates typically exclude special items.

Revenue dropped 6 percent to $741.9 million, missing the average Wall Street estimate for $754 million. Ad revenue slipped down 11 percent, hurt mostly by fewer classified ads.

Chief Executive Janet Robinson says business was hurt by the "U.S. economic slowdown and secular forces playing out across the media industry."

What are "secular forces"?

Ben, you mean to say that the Warsaw Pact didn't commit genocide during the period 1945 through the end of the Cold War (or even to the death of Stalin in about 1954) in numbers exceeding 8,000. Not including inside the Soviet Union itself, cause some nit picker will claim the USSR or Russia is not 'European'. So, just limiting it to the Warsaw Pact, Eastern Europe, the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia), and Yugoslavia under Tito. I am sure more than 8,000 died in each of the aforementioned countries during from the end of WWII to the end of the Cold War, but that would mean having to connote genocide to the lib reporters' favorite country and philosophy, Commies. Better just to let it rest with Serbia, whom the left continues to portray as a fascist (i.e. rightwinger) rather than as the commie/socialist country that it was.

Roméo Dallaire, the Canadian commander in Rwanda, had a breakdown. I recommend you see Shake Hands With the Devil.

Interestingly, many Canadian troops who served in Bosnia suffered from PTSD; as many as 50% in a some units. When planning began for the Afghanistan mission, the MOD expected similar rates of PTSD. But it never happened. In Af'stan, our troops have aggressive ROE. They are actually allowed to kill the bad guys & protect the civilians. PTSD rates are below 5%. Go figure.

Well, there too there is an evolutionary biological argument (several, actually). My favorite has to do with cooking -- it appears in an article by an old professor of mine, Richard Wrangham, entitled "The Raw and the Stolen" (Abstract here)

The adoption of cooking required delay of the consumption of food while it was accumulated and/or brought to a processing area, and accumulations of food were valuable and stealable. Dominant (e.g., larger) individuals (typically male) were therefore able to scrounge from subordinate (e.g., smaller) individuals (typically female) instead of relying on their own foraging efforts. Because female fitness is limited by access to resources (particularly energetic resources), this dynamic would have favored females able to minimize losses to theft. To do so, we suggest, females formed protective relationships with male co-defenders. Males would have varied in their ability or willingness to engage effectively in this relationship, so females would have competed for the best food guards, partly by extending their period of sexual attractiveness. This would have increased the numbers of matings per pregnancy, reducing the intensity of male intrasexual competition. ... It wasn't breast cancer, as I recall, that appeared.

I'm not all that good at google - maybe someone else could find a link?

Dianna - I had a friend who went through this. The cancer may have reappeared in another part of her body; but I believe it tracks back to the breast cancer. This is what happened to my friend. It was treatable but not curable, treatment bought her another 2 years (long enough to see her son graduate from HS), - but eventually she did pass away.

Go figure.

Sorry, the "nothing to do with mate" part.

I had a devoted friend who worshipped his wife...after five years of being "cut off" in every emotional way possible, he had an affair. He would have never done this had he not been abandoned.

Why he didn't leave her beforehand, I don't know. They're still married, and I pity them both.

Now, that being said, I know people who are serial adulterers. Them? I can't stand them.

Watching the coverage of Barrack Hussein in Israel and the Middle East I came to a moment of clear vision :

Obama is the American Olmert!

Israelis had great hope for Olmert as someone who would lead a new way to peace. Like Obama he is a smooth talker and a lawyer. Olmert however is arguably the worst Prime Minister in Israeli history. His inexperience led Israel into the 2006 Southern Lebanon War where his Defence Minister was a labor organizer. He has been reluctant to use military force to protect Israel's interest in Gaza and Lebanon. Israel now faces 40,000 missiles pointed at it from Lebanon, as well as missiles from Gaza, and also from Iraq, with its population centers at risk as a result. Olmert believes in words, not acts, and likes the sound of his own voice. Sound familiar?

The election of an in-experienced Obama will put American national security at risk. John F. Kennedy's lack of experience and Kruschev's sense that he could be taken advantage in Cuba came close to causing a nuclear war. No doubt Ahmadinejad and Putin are salivating for Obama's election, as are others who believe he is a lightweight and afraid to use the military force of this country. Israel will no doubt launch on the Iranian nuclear sites if he is elected, they will believe they have no choice.

The type of "change" Obama offers should not come at the expense of our future.

I'd say you got that right!

The unfortunate part is that it seems to be historically rare in Africa for countries to have good leadership. When they have (pre-Mugabe Zimbabwe), the countries have done reasonably well. IIRC, Zimbabwe was once the 'breadbasket of Africa' in terms of exports to other African countries and the economy that that generated. ok, here goes...the nutshell version is that the larger racial gropuing of/in humanity developed differing breeding strategies based upon their genetic abilities as well as their geographical location, respources, and climate. it's a sliding scale, from small monogamous families, devoting much energy to relatively few offsping until they could fend for themselves, to a more promiscuous breeding strategy, with little nuclear family cohesion, producing maximum offspring, but devoting fewer resources to raise them.

there are two polar ends, with 2 mid-groupings, in that sliding scale. very interesting theory IMO.

One major issue is brain size: human infants are totally helpless for at least a year, a function of effectively being born (by animal standards) prematurely. This is because the head is so big it can barely make it through the hip girdle as it is. Chimp brains are only about a 1/4 of ours, and the braincase correspondingly smaller, so they are much more developed when born. The weakness of infants intensifies the need for parental investment, increasing the need for older adults to aid in the care of the offspring.

Asked point-blank if Democrats in the Senate would consider how increasing the supply of oil would lower the prices that are pinching U.S. consumers, Cantwell replied: "Oh, we definitely want to move beyond petroleum. And so there will be a supply side offered by the Democrats and it will include everything from battery technology to making sure that we have good home domestic supply, and looking, as I said about moving faster on those kind of things like wind and solar that can help us with our high cost of natural gas."

move beyond petroleum -- we are petroleum based ecomony, get used to it.

I think the drop is mainly due to reduction in demand as the price forced some people to cut consumption.

For example, I'm seeing a lot more bicycles now in the morning when I ride mine to work.

I know a lot of people who have curtailed travel plans due to cost.

Although I must say, my 16 year old daughter is trying to keep the consumption up there all by herself. She thinks that the tank in Dad's car is bottomless and gas is free.

Ironically, the author of the theory discussed brain size and other physical and genetic factors in the groups he was classifying, and theorized they related to the differing breeding strategies (as well as the environments, etc).

I have to dig it up again, and do a re-read. IIRC, I had an abridged version of the original work. I remember it as being thought of as controversial...

As for the comments you made, I think that applies to all human offspring, so it's not a factor in the differentiation in breeding strategies I was talking about.

re: #257 3 wood

I think the drop is mainly due to reduction in demand as the price forced some people to cut consumption.

For example, I'm seeing a lot more bicycles now in the morning when I ride mine to work.

I know a lot of people who have curtailed travel plans due to cost.

Although I must say, my 16 year old daughter is trying to keep the consumption up there all by herself. She thinks that the tank in Dad's car is bottomless and gas is free.

My 18 year old daughter received a $20/wk gas stipend while she was ferrying her younger sister to school.

Now that she will be attending junior college, gas is her responsibility once again.

She does a lot of "optional" (read: poorly planned) driving, and she is slowly developing the idea that I won't support it. ;)

Could be. We'll know soon enough, since the federal highway tax on gasoline and fuel oil is fixed. There will be screams for a tax hike if demand drops.

what has changed, is that people are les likely to carry on affairs in PRIVATE

I think society has become less condemning of certain behaviors and as a result, some people pursue their desires rather than their commitments.

I don't see how being more honest leads to more cheating.

Among my circle of friends & acquaintances, the men I know who cheated were roundly criticized by the all of the other men. The women who cheated received acceptance, rationalizations & support from most of their girlfriends (some women condemned or critisized the cheaters).

This is only anecdotal, but there is an ethos among some women today that it's a woman's right to "find happiness" and cheating is excused as "only doing what men have always done".

In this case, both Edwards & his lady friend are jerks.

It's idiocy to build below sea-level on the Gulf Coast.

I am opposed to pandering to illegal aliens. I am also convinced that both Mexico and the US have economies partly reliant on exploitation of cheap illegal labor. Since we wink and nod at this problem since both parties benefit, the US gets the added benefit of unparalleled drug violence, and Mexico enjoys a level of corruption that would make an Afghan warlord blush.

But if I point out any of the obvious problems with having an uncontrolled border with a violent, drug-ridden, corrupt country, I will get called a racist.

But what is "character" today? It is interesting to me that younger people tend to have clear black and white views of things while people who have a bit more life experience see a lot of grays.

I think society has redefined sexual character as religious observance and belief has declined. "You only live once" and relativism is applied to our life choices as much as they are to our politics. Does liberal thought happily co-exist with adultery?

Liberal thought happily coexists with anything a liberal wants to do....rules are tools liberals use to control others....not themselves.

This can be seen in the Leftist Hollywood concept of romance. 99% of all "romace" films are actually nothing more than adultry films, where the couple is the one with problems, and the audience is asked to cheer on the adulterous relationship.

There are truly too many to mention, but Titanic, The Wedding Singer, The Notebook, My Best Friends Wedding, and Casablanca come to mind off the top of my head.

People are rebuilding their homes on the land where their previous homes were, yes. That land is what they own . . . they don't own a home lot somewhere else, they own it where it is.

Businesses downtown and near the Quarter - there was less damage there altogether. No rebuilding needed there.

N.O. is hundreds of years old; underneath the streets is a system of drains and pumps that do an excellent job of keeping flooding out of the streets.

The rainfall is not what flooded N.O. Nor did the Mississippi River cause the flooding. It was the breaking of a levee that had been leaking for some time, that let in the water from Pontchartrain lake

Maybe he was hoping for high 5's, but to a man we tore into the jerk. Your wife is a great woman, what the f*ck you doing that for? when did your dick take over for your brain? & etc. The sad thing was, the woman he was screwing was the wife of another guy in our circle. (not at the bar that night, obviously) When I got home, I told my (now ex) wife about this shocking news, and she just gave me a condescending smile, "of course, we've (the girls) all known about that for months". I am not an expert on Casablanc (and it is a bit of a diversion from my point) but the audience knew she was married when we were asked to cheer her on towards Rick.

The sympathy was created in the audience to encourage the adultry.

That being said, and away from Casablanca....do your own study of Romance movies....and the trend will become perfectly clear.

It is always Marriage that is the problematic relationship. The Husband or Wife is the problem while the out-of-wedlock person is the angel. Sheesh, find me a movie where the marriage is the preferred, normal, sane relationship. They exist (of course) but they are rare.

I completely agree with your main point; I just disagree with Casablanca. I think the 1940 audience would have pitied them, not cheered them on. The audience doesn't find out Ilsa was married to Viktor until at least a third the way into the movie--Ilsa tells Rick at the outdoor market the day after she first saw him a Casablanca and we see his flashback to their days in Paris.

As angry as I'd be, and as much as I'd counsel someone who confided in me to break off the affair and fix their marriage, I would never do the damage of telling the spouse. Never.

If my friend refused to break off the affair, I'd break off the friendship. But I'd never be the one to tell anyone about a spouse's affair.

Corruption flooded NOLA.

All the money diverted over the for leeve upgrades and maintenance gone into various pockets.

That's right. The whole theme of the movie is whether it is better to be moral and take a position, or remain neutral & immoral. Rick choses to be moral. He doesn't have an affair with Ilsa, and decides he has to fight the Nazis.

You can see how Hollywood would redo that ending today: f*ck the girl & f*ck America.

That being said, the trend in Hollywood, (and in books etc) to advocate towards adultry, and show it to be a superior relationsihop is very real and very strong.

re: #332 WrathofG-d

Family Man. One of the rare......

I completely agree with your main point; I just disagree with Casablanca. I think the 1940 audience would have pitied them, not cheered them on. The audience doesn't find out Ilsa was married to Viktor until at least a third the way into the movie--Ilsa tells Rick at the outdoor market the day after she first saw him a Casablanca and we see his flashback to their days in Paris.

mmm.we goes see those romantic movies alot ( chick flicks, if you will)
The only one i liked this year was about the dead husband leaving notes for his widowed wife..can't remember the name..

Over at Bill Roggio's site somebody put up a pretty eye opening statistic. Posted by Cordell at July 23, 2008 2:49 PM ET (I just put the main statistics he cites):

"Baghdad at 0.6 homicides/day/million is now safer than Oakland, California, at 1.0 homicides/day/million. East Oakland by itself would rival Diyala by this same measure of danger. Those numbers are based on FBI crime reports indicated here:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

If Baghdad's 0.6 holds up, Baghdad is as safe as Atlanta, Georgia, and safer than Detroit, Balitmore, New Orleans, Newark, St. Louis, Oakland, D.C, Cincinatti, Philly, Buffalo, and Kansas City."

Thanks Cordell. This is real bad news for the liberals of the world who had seen a civil war and failed state in Iraq as their ticket to power on the "See? We told you so!" platform.

Thirty minutes before she died he asked me to come into the other room and proceeded to tell me that he had another woman, and that he had even brought the woman to meet my friend a couple of weeks before! He feels that by doing that he has her blessing and insists on having the young thing sit by his side at the services. I am in hell just thinking about it. I have to speak at the funeral and have to make sure her dog is taken care of so I am repressing my every inclination to rip him a new one. I think I'm getting an ulcer over this.

The man is scum, pure and simple.

Get through this for your friend's memory with respect, then have nothing to do with the guy afterwards.

The Americans who are getting a better look are the ones who are paying attention. That would not include any Obama supporters. Unfortunately the gaffes, incoherence, and idiocy don't register with them. Obama by 2.

Liberal thought happily coexists with anything a liberal wants to do....rules are tools liberals use to control others....not themselves.

Ok going to bring up the book again. A Conservative History of the American Left details this completely. Adultery, wife swapping, "selected" mates, its all been done by the left since the religious leftists communes of the 1800's. This isn't new, nor is it unusual where the left is concerned.

yes it would look bad.....but the Iraqi civilians don't vote, gullible Americans do....and when they see their Ossiah being bowed down to throughout Europe, etc., it is going to convince them that the problem of the "world hating us" is going to be automatically fixed by Obama, and more people will vote for the hOpe of the Ossiah.

477 jcm  Wed, Jul 23, 2008 2:04:43pm

The media is having a Obamasm, guess who is to blame.....

McCain and the media's Obama love

John McCain and his campaign aides are frosted at the media for giving so much attention to Barack Obama's overseas trip, and they accuse reporters of being in love with the Democratic candidate. Apparently no one told them that, as Notre Dame football coach Lou Holtz once advised, you should never complain about your problems, because most people don't care, and the rest are happy you have them.

Whining is not an reassuring habit in a political candidate. One thing all presidents and presidential candidates have in common is that sometimes the press coverage won't go their way. Stoic indifference is the best way to respond. If McCain gets in a snit over what The Washington Post does, how will he react when he has to deal with truly aggravating adversaries, like Kim Jong Il?

Besides, it's his own fault that Obama is getting so much attention. For weeks, McCain has been practically taunting his opponent into visiting Iraq--making it that much more newsworthy when Obama actually did.

The masses, maybe. But not the leaders. They count on the U.S. to handle the expense and troop-life-disrupting international policing of tyrants and slaughterers.. Year after year you can read in Aviation Week about these fabulous military and space system ideas the Euros publicize that end up being cut out of the budget to cover social programs. They've fallen way behind now. They know McCain wouldn't leave them in the lurch, but Obama (given that he wants to throw the Iraqis to the jihadi wolves, even after success) would leave them in the lurch if it was convenient. Follow the technical advances on that front. I recently discovered a company that has a process to create oil out of algae that is head and shoulders above any others that are researching it. It laid to rest some questions in my mind of how finite the supply of oil actually is.

Sapphire Energy

We can now say that, not only is oil renewable, it is a carbon neutral fuel. Not only that, but this is capitalism at it's best, which is sure to stick in the craw of anti-capitalist environmentalists everywhere.

If this works, we can tell the oil ticks what they can go do with their oil! Exciting stuff!

re: #427 Sunlight,

It's not just that. Granted that Saddam Hussein was a brutal tyrant, but that alone isn't sufficient reason to go to war with him. After all, Idi Amin Robert Mugabe is a brutal tyrant, and no one is suggesting that we go to war with him. There were several reasons to go to war with Hussein (Saddam, that is, not Barrack).

The first and foremost reason was his potential to arm terrorists with weapons of mass destruction. He had used chemical weapons before. He had had active weapons programs before. He was friendly with terrorists to the point of giving families of suicide bombers $50K per 'splodeydope. Post-9-11, this was unacceptable.

The second reason was that Sanctions were failing. Contrary to Saddam being "in his box", Saddam was building palaces. He also managed to scare up 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium, but Joe Wilson had assured us that he really didn't mean it, right? We knew that sanctions were failing. Again, in a post-9-11 world, this was unacceptable.

Third is the strategic importance of Iraq. Iraq sits on top a lake of oil, with a commanding presence over yet more lakes of oil. The economic power is sizable. If sanctions failed (as they were), then Saddam Hussein would have the potential to disrupt world oil supplies. This is a strategic concern for the United States (and the world).

Saddam had to go for all those reasons. After al Qaeda started blowing people up in Iraq, we had no choice but to defeat them there, but that was a separate issue. This was also for the good of the people of Iraq, but their interests were not foremost in our minds when we made the decision to oppose them.

It was in the strategic interest of the United States to go into Iraq. Once there, it was in the strategic interest of the United States to stay until a stable Iraqi government was put in place. It may continue to be in our strategic interest to stay. That'll partially depend on Iran, but we can go to war with Iran without Iraqi bases.

What is in our strategic interests should govern any decisions about our withdrawal, though.

In the process of securing our strategic interests, we closed the killing fields and rape rooms of Saddam Hussein's Iraq, and this is good.

What is interesting about the people who wish Saddam Hussein back in power (and that is the effect of their whining) is that they don't really hate the people of Iraq. It isn't that they want the rape rooms back so much as they can't stand for the strategic goals of the United States to have been served.

It's not that they are anti-Iraqi. It is that they are anti-American. And yes, this stands for the boy who would be President, Barrack Whose Middle Name Must Not Be Mentioned Obama. Most especially for him.

The market finished up again today.

U.S. stocks rise for another day as oil fall persists

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. stocks on Wednesday ended modestly higher for a second consecutive day of gains as crude deepened its decline and as lawmakers drew closer to approving a plan to help troubled mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
The major indexes only briefly pared gains after the Federal Reserve's Beige Book cast an anticipated but dim look at the economy

With regard to oil:

Crude-oil futures slumped almost $4 in retreating for a second day, as data showed U.S. inventories fell less than expected and as concerns faded that a hurricane threatened oil operations in the Gulf. Crude for September delivery fell $3.98 to settle at $124.44 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Expect the MSM news to ignore the market tonight.

When was the last time you had a TV program or movie where the Marriage was solid? Leave It To Beaver?

Oh come on Wrath, you can do better than that.
Mad About You.
Seventh Heaven.
The Cosby Show.
Home Improvement.
Happy Days.
All in the Family.

But I will agree that the Hollywood trend is to show dysfunctional relationships so they can milk them for the drama with all the subtlety of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster, and you wind up with Desperate Housewives.

Add in all of our AF pilots and staging people who camped in the desert for years on deployments for Southern Watch, etc.

Iraq has been fly paper. It has pulled the varsity team out of the mountains and has let us fight them on flat land. Hard on the Iraqis, but they have done the miraculous and started standing up for themselves. Running off the jihadis means they went back to the mountains and we'll either have to go fight them there or figure out another alt fly paper site. Good for the Iraqis. I don't think Obama wants to fight the jihadis.

There is an element of truth to the article, especially this:

Besides, it's his own fault that Obama is getting so much attention. For weeks, McCain has been practically taunting his opponent into visiting Iraq--making it that much more newsworthy when Obama actually did.

Winning politicians know that the campaign is like a Fourth of July fireworks celebration. Save your best stuff for the end.
McCain could just have easily saved that taunting for October when the logistics of such a magical mystery tour would have been impossible. Now Obama has an opportunity to 'revise' his position once again.
Hopefully, McCain has better stuff up his sleeve.

I guess I can take some solace in the fact that it took over a month for me to notice this little slice of heaven.

And yes, I am an old fossil, a relic, a desiccated husk frozen into past yesterdays.

But that dino with water gushing out its mouth reminded of this.

Maybe you thought reality TV hit the lowest of the low when "Fear Factor" contestants devoured cockroaches, or when gold diggers paraded their wares in hopes of marrying a millionaire, or when Tila Tequila got a second shot at "love" with 10 guys and 10 girls.

These shows look like "Masterpiece Theater" compared to what's coming.

Take, for instance, "Hurl," an eating-and-regurgitating competition in which contestants gorge themselves on everything from chicken pot pies to peanut butter sandwiches, then get strapped into spinning contraptions -- whoever vomits last wins.

To think that it took big bulging brains thousands of years to invent television, and just a few short decades to sink to this.

Here you go. The key is the whole grain mustard.

Green Beans with Whole-Grain Mustard

Makes 4 servings.

Ingredients
3/4 lb haricots verts or other thin green beans, trimmed
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons whole-grain Dijon mustard

Preparation
Fill a bowl with ice water.

Cook beans in a large pot of salted boiling water just until crisp-tender, 3 to 4 minutes. Drain beans and transfer to ice water. Drain well in a colander and pat dry.

Heat oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Sauté beans with mustard and salt and pepper to taste, stirring, until heated through, about 4 minutes.

For large volumes of mashed potatoes, a ricer is not a luxury, it;s a necessity. That's what I've heard about fusion. I just like the idea that their newest "convert" to alternative energy went off about the need to drill here. You could almost see their little heads exploding.

A ricer is a requirement if you do a lot of mashing, you are so right.

571 Throbert McGee  Wed, Jul 23, 2008 6:23:14pm

By the way, WrathOfG-d, you're nearly as wrong about Titanic as you were about Casablanca -- since Kate Winslet's character was merely engaged (and unhappily so), not married.

Since when is it "adultery" to break up with a fiance if you discover that he's a cad, a coward, and/or Billy Zane? In fact, I rather thought that was one of the points, traditionally, of having an engagement period before you go all the way to the altar -- so that you can end things honorably, without cheapening the marital vows. (That said, Winslet's character does have steamy car sex with someone not her fiance before officially ending her engagement. But that just makes her a nasty slut-girl in need of a good spanking from a poor but honest working lad -- not an "adulteress.")

P.S. Or it's just possible that I have the plot of Titanic completely mixed up with Bi-Tanic, in which case my bad, and apologies to WrathofG-d.
