Another Soon-To-Be-Nuanced Statement from Obama

Wed, Jul 23, 2008 at 2:13:30 pm PDT

John at Power Line notices another in a seemingly endless series of gaffes from the Naive Messiah: The Fine Line Between Pandering and Lying.

Obama continued:

Now, in terms of knowing my commitments, you don’t have to just look at my words, you can look at my deeds. Just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee, a bill to call for divestment from Iran, as a way of ratcheting up the pressure to ensure that they don’t obtain a nuclear weapon.
But Obama is not a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Obama just made that up so he could count the committee’s action as one of “my deeds.”

UPDATE at 7/23/08 2:32:05 pm:

And here’s the video clip:

Charles:

But Obama is not a member of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Obama just made that up so he could count the committee’s action as one of “my deeds.”

And his "flock" couldn't care less. Charisma (or the illusion thereof), not truth, experience, or anything else, matters to those who are so intellectually weak that they faint when he talks or get tingly legs. They don't care what he says. They care about how he makes them feel. Reality is a nuisance to these people, a nuisance they think they can merely walk away from.

Having said that, Obama is not a very smart man, imo. Whatever he knows, he's been told. I don't think he's well read or otherwise knowledgeable about the world - and he proves me right almost every time he opens his mouth.

Expect his "disciples" to claim that there were a lot of back door deals going on regarding this legislation, and that Obama was entirely in the right in his assertion- without his "unofficial" help, the bill could not have passed. Therefore, the Messiah is once again found to be Infallible and the Perfect Savior of our horrible, horrible nation.

I'm reminded of a little exercise that used to be held during deer camp.

Now, when you get a group of gun-toting redneck yokels together for more than a few hours they tend to get bored. I mean, after they get through lynching all the available minorities, molesting any wimmins present, and going through the likker like Sherman through Georgia time sorta drags.

Thus, The Liars Contest. Some of the more gently nurtured among us probably haven't heard of it. Pretty simple. Each contestant tells the biggest lie he can think of, and the best lie wins. A safe and pleasant way to while away the hours till shooting light.

Had to be discontinued eventually. Seems like someone came up with the ultimate lie, the falsehood so large that the mind of mortal man will never surpass, hell, never equal it.

Simple, really. Once the next-to-last contestant finishes his yarn, the soon-to-be-declared winner leans forward, spits carefully between his boots, and says

"I believe every single word you just said."

Brother Obama could have been Grand Master had he wished.

I actually find it amazing that anyone is overly surprised here. The thing to understand is that he lives in an ideological echo chamber. We consider the messiah thing with him to be a joke, the people around him do not. The worship is complete. He is surrounded by sycophantic yes men that would never even consider correcting anything he says. The slips and gaffes that we hear all the time are a result of that. He's used to people that would never consider correcting him on anything. We actually had a section in psychology on people like this. It's what leads to massive cases of corruption. Someone decides to do wrong and no one dares correct them, so they get drug in and do the same thing, and it goes on and on and on.

They will not ever find out that he said he is on the banking committee when he isn't on that committee. Even if it is on every blog in the country. It will be presented in the morning breakfast table papers and evening news in a way that is blended with other soundbites (or not brought up at all).

We need a new news delivery system... a drafting plotter (printer) mounted on the wall next to the coffee pot in the kitchen, printing out the new media morning newspaper on a timer as an on-demand service. There's no way to get past Obama's old media marketing department without something that replaces the morning paper.

There are really two major efforts that major media has going. Play up the positives where Obama is concerned, and headline the negatives for McCain. The "positive" is what will get people voting for Obama; the "negative" is what will get people who might be leaning toward McCain to stay home on voting day.

Right now the Obama spin machine is jacked up too fast, and little gears are flying off (for example, the rare journalist with integrity, complaining that the Obama World Tour was just a photo-op session). It'll run smoother after the convention, I suspect.

Meanwhile the second effort ... ignore McCain, accentuate/invent mistakes ... is grinding right along.
It's a lot more subtle, but imho it's just as important as the Cult of Obama stuff the "positive" spin has going.

/dang, time to vote for a domestic beer or three, maybe this whole thing will look a little more cheerful ;-)

215 K~Bob  Wed, Jul 23, 2008 3:42:43pm

Senator Obama reminds me of young kids (usually boys) I knew, who would always have something to to say--constantly attempting to dominate a conversation. You know the kind'a kid I mean: always fighting for that center of attention by spouting a story that is too bizarre to be true. Stupid stories like, "I know this kid who drank a whole bottle of his mom's perfume!" or, "Once we took a whole bunch of fruit from the supermarket, and nobody saw us!" or ""At the school where my brother goes, this one teacher always trips the kids in the hall!" Stories that could maybe be true, but at best, were incredibly embellished, and more likely were made up on-the-spot.

That kinda kid is pretty common under the age of ten. Heck, we probably all tried that tactic at least once or twice when we were little. The vast majority of kids grow out of it or are taught better by parents and teachers. Unfortunately, some never grow out of it, never even notice they are inventing and embellishing. They live inside a malleable world of meaningless words, and convince themselves that whatever they are saying now is reality. Ten minutes from now, they make a different claim or tell the story differently, and reality shifts to accommodate them.

Its a pathology that is beyond narcissism.

[Comedians know about this aspect of growing up, and they harness it directly to tell humorous stories. So do writers of fiction. But it's unlikely they actually believe the stuff they invent. I doubt even L. Ron Hubbard was that screwed up.]

Best bit in Bruce Catton.

At Antietam the Union Generals were discussing how to get Burnsides' Brigade into the battle. The were all on horseback on the hill on the East side of the valley with the creek below them and the Confederate positions on the opposite slope. One General observed the scene and quoted Jomini on the problem of making an opposed river crossing. Another replied by quoting from Caesar's Gallic Wars. Other gentleman chimed in with lore they remembered from their days together at West Point. Maybe somebody mentioned Clausewitz. Clearly they were having a good time and were willing to continue for some period while the troops were being killed before them. Finally a junior officer, who had graduated last in his class at the US Military Academy and who's head was uncluttered by theory, kicked his horse and rode out into the middle of Antietam creek. As the water lapped at his horses knees he called out, "This is how deep it is General!" That is how George Armstrong Custer became America's youngest general officer.

Sigh. Democracy is the system that ensures the people get the government they deserve. It also ensures that you get the government they deserve. Despite all the flowery speeches made on windy platforms in the days before television, it is not based on the expected intelligence or virtue of individuals or even really of groups. It is based on the practical recognition that other systems are over time worse. In a republican system such as America is supposed to have the expectation is that an iterative process will both empower the office holders with legitimacy by linking them to a sovereignty vested in the nation at large and shall reduce effects of the passion and cupidity that prevails among the populace by filtering it through a series of elections. This permits persons with qualities of better judgement to be brought forward in what is a form of political market. The reality has become increasingly divorced from the theory but it still is better than the alternatives.

Obama not only referred to the "U.S. Senate Banking Committee, which is my committee", as he said the word "my" he moved his hand to his chest, to emphasize in no uncertain terms that this was his committee -- that is, that he chaired that committee. In actuality, he doesn't chair that committee, and he is not even a member of if.

Possibilities: (1) He was lying. He is a serial liar, who repeatedly changes his position and then denies that his position has changed. But it is difficult to believe that he thought he could get away with such a lie, when everyone knows that he is not a member of this committee. So it may be that he is an uncontrollable liar, the way that some people -- known as kleptomaniacs -- have an uncontrollable urge to steal. Had he given the matter some serious thought, he would not have lied, but he was unable to stop himself from lying. But he is a compulsive liar, and when not reading the Teleprompter is apt to go off on an uncontrollable, compulsively produced lie.

(2) He was not lying, because he believed it himself, and he lives in a fantasy world. Obama's fantasy world includes his being convinced that he is the Messiah (or Mahdi, in Muslim terms). In his fantasy world, he does all sorts of things, and is chairman of all sorts of committees. This could be a form of schizophrenia, and people do have such syndromes, although they generally take medication for it.

Obama had a miserable childhood. He was abandoned by his father at the age of 2. He was abandoned by his mother at the age of 10. So he got into the habit of living in a dream world, where these things did not actually happen, and where the world is whatever he imagines it to be, and he is whatever he imagines himself to be. Maybe it's not quite schizophrenia, but it involves being accustomed to living in a fantasy world, and actually believing the fantasies.

(3) He has a mental condition in which he is unaware of what he is actually saying. It's more or less sleep-walking, and he goes through the motions of speaking, but it doesn't really register in his mind what he is saying.

With this mental case Barack Hussein Obama in the White House as President Obama, Ahmadinejad will be rubbing his hands in glee, as he goes about testing President Obama with a severe challenge. Revolutionary Islamic Iran rolled over President Jimmy Carter, by attacking our embassy there and holding our people as hostages for 444 days, until Carter left office and President Reagan came into power. With a President Obama, who appears to be a reality-denying mental case, and who also appears to be very weak and an appeaser, the test that will be put to President Obama may be very severe. Iran under the mullahs and ayatollahs is becoming nuclear, and getting ready for nuclear jihad. God help us.

As far as I'm concerned, the out-and-out corruption of anyone giving any money to any candidate they want to, as long as complete disclosure of the source of all contributions or donations is required, is far and away better than the multiplicity of thumbs being placed on the political scales by "campaign finance reform." I'd rather have honest corruption than corruption connived at and surreptitiously engaged in.

I include all of the post-Watergate "reforms," and McCain-Feingold, in the list of things that should be scrapped.

I'd agree with that 100%!
Full transparency and disclosure would be the way to go here. It's often been said that, in politics, sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Works for me. Remember George Washington Plunkitt and Honest Graft? If the 19th amendment was repealed and state legislators, a bunch of hacks generally, could spend time grilling Senators on their fitness we would learn more. The Confederacy had the interesting idea of seating Cabinet officers in the legislature so they would be available for questioning in a semi-parliamentary manner. The crime should be in concealing information from the public.

He came at a time of irredentism/revanchism and was seen as the reincarnation of the Napoleonic spirit. However, his failure to act and them his suicide at his mistresses grave were his undoings.

Antietam was a Union loss tactically and draw/minor win strategically.

Strategically it confined the ANV to not invading Pennsylvania, which was the aim of Lee's campaign that year. That was a huge plus. BUT the ANV escaped the battlefield after holding off the vastly larger Union forces and the war was extended for several more years than if the ANV had been wiped out instead. It gave the ANV a big win against long odds and a huge boost to morale. They won the day then left in the night rather than being wiped out and fought for several more very bloody years.

That could explain his getting the Dhimmicrat nomination, primarily on the basis of getting the jump in caucus states where a small, energized group can sway the vote...
But how does it explain his lead in polling, from the huge leads from months ago to the razor-thin margins now? The trouble is that only political junkies are paying any attention to this stuff right now. Obama has the luxury of stumbling and bumbling his way around the world, and the Mainstream Media report that he's farting perfume.

The Democrats are keeping all their fingers and toes crossed that by the time the public starts paying attention in September, Obama's campaign will have all of the kinks worked out. If he does, and McCain fails to ignite (as seems increasingly likely), O will be the next President of the U.S.

On the other hand, Hillary has to be looking for her opening. If Obama's performance doesn't improve, making the Super-Delegates nervous, she may move on him at the Convention.

Some of the press might be noticing. I've heard CNN picked up on this one, and I guess Andrea Mitchell has some not so nice things to say about this tour.

Mitchell: Let me just say something about the message management. He didn't have reporters with him, he didn't have a press pool, he didn't do a press conference while he was on the ground in either Afghanistan or Iraq. What you're seeing is not reporters brought in. You're seeing selected pictures taken by the military, questions by the military, and what some would call fake interviews, because they're not interviews from a journalist. So, there's a real press issue here. Politically it's smart as can be. But we've not seen a presidential candidate do this, in my recollection, ever before.

With the buildup to that last sentence, Mitchell went way off the Plantation. When it comes to the Obama, maybe the Legacy Media are waking up, one small mind at a time?

It should be pointed out that the World, which was supposedly solidly in sympathy with the US on and right after 9/11, turned on the US in a second when the US decided to do something about it.

By the same token, the World which is supposedly dewy and tingling over the prospect of an Obama presidency is basically just sucking up and biding its time, looking forward to being able to mock the US for the inexperienced buffoon it hopes we put at the helm, and hoping to be able to cut any number of capers that a competent president would not let it get away with.

(c) INTERDICTION ASSISTANCE AMENDMENTS.—Section 583 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (22 U.S.C. 2349bb–2) is amended—

1) in subsection (a)—
(A) by striking ‘‘should ensure that’’ and inserting ‘‘shall ensure that, beginning in fiscal year 2007,’’;
(B) by striking ‘‘expended’’ and inserting ‘‘obligated’’; and
(C) by striking ‘‘that originate from, and are destined for, other countries’’ and inserting ‘‘to non-state actors and states of proliferation concern’’;...

Let them eat sand!

Russians have been staking claims to the Artic for a reason. This could get ugly.

I wondered WTF he could have been talking about. Did anybody tell Osama, by the way. He really needs to know.

No, he is not on the list

If you dig into Obama's "law" to stop loose nuclear weapons from terrorists' hands, yu will see it is just a foreign aid package to give friendly nations willing to cooperate cash to secure loose conventional weapons. How do they enact that?

Well there you have it. Should is replaced with Shall and they closed the "Osama bin Laden loophole" in the existing non-proliferation law. Well that makes me feel safer..

Next Obama writes laws that make children clean their rooms, stops my dog from shedding and prevents garbage trucks from waking people up.
The man is awesome.

Down here that's code language for ' Democratic op who specializes in signing up dirt-napping voters '.

they do sign up to vote, anyone and everyone, likely to vote for them.
then they move on to seeking out an 'aggrieved' group of people. unemployed factory workers, lettuce pickers, residents in a 'bad' neighborhood. and agitate the hell out of them. so they picket and complain and raise hell at all levels of gov't. and seek redress for their predicaments from our elected officials, who often give in to stay in power. it's extortion and strong arm tactics. lots of times these complainers actually get money. especially from corporations. community organizers call that 'direct action'.
sharpton and jackson are pros as community organizers.
and they sure do get their cut of the money.

This is not a gaffe. It's a LIE. A Senator knows if he is on the banking committee.

In the article (dunno if you read it), the place IVAN staked out has about 1.2% of the crude.

369 rabidfox  Wed, Jul 23, 2008 6:37:56pm

Obama's continued use of the term "we", combined with the phrase "we are going to require you to ..." plus his desire for a civilian force to match that of the military leads me to believe that we may have a Chavez in the making.

Yes but we are at the opening moves of a new version of the Great Game. Canada is making moves to assert her sovereignty in the North, which can cause problems with the US view of innocent passage. Russia can profit immensely from this as the article makes clear. The biggest problem Russia faces is that the increasing corruption and decreasing adherence to Western standards for the rule of law discourage investment and entrepreneurial activity. We should start drilling, with environmental safeguards, in ANWAR and establish a robust presence up there.

The last line pretty much sums up my opinion of him...

It is becoming increasingly apparent that Sen. Obama, the product of a corrupt Chicago political machine, is little more than the willing pawn of those who have manipulated his campaign success, a “useful idiot” who has accepted the Marxist, anti-Semitic philosophies espoused by his mentors while he mouths the vacuous promises of hope and change without ever admitting that he dances to the pull of the strings by his unnamed puppetmaster.

I don't know what is worse, that he just out right lied about being on the US Banking Committee or that he is actually on the the Homeland Security and Veteran Affairs Committees.....

Lets see if this makes the papers and MSM News....

It's no wonder that the Obamanation hasn't held a single committee on Afghanistan, of which he is the subcommittee chair, what with his attending meetings of his real committee, Housing&Banking in the Senate, his other responsibilities somehow got lost. Or maybe, the Obamanation was busy sitting in the Housing & Banking Committee, instead of the Afghan subcommittee, wondering why no one allowed him to vote there? He probably ascribed it to the racist Repubs on the committee once again trying to deny African Americans their right to vote.

Or maybe this is another case of Obamegalomania. He is using the royal we, meaning, the Obamanation is a member of the Senate, so anything the Senate does, whether the Obamanation is present or not, whether he contributed to the bill or not, or even whether he voted for or against the bill (see, Surge, see Iranian Revolutionary Guards/AlQuds terrorist organization) if it now may affect his ability to become President, he will claim credit, because he was a member of the Senate when such a bill was passed. And it must be the case that these bills only passed, either with or without Obamanation's vote or support, because the Obamanation was in the Congress to begin with. So you see, the Obamanation can take credit for any bill pending in Congress simply because he is a member of Congress, and if you disagree with this proposition you are a racist, anti american, anti change/hope xenophobic, Bible thumping, gun clinging redneck.

re: #46 Occasional Reader

False choice! Both are true.

He's stupid for thinking that he won't be caught in this lie. If he doesn't realize that everything he says will be parsed with a fine-tooth comb, that's stupid.
Anybody that reports on this is a racist and will get what's damn well coming to them. If they're lucky, it'll just be the re-education camp, if not, OTHER MEASURES, to protect the socialist norm you understand. Apostates from the faith of the Mess-iah will not be tolerated.

383 ShalomMets  Thu, Jul 24, 2008 2:27:34pm

As I understand it, he is not on the committee and opposed the law under discussion.

He is lying to an audience he thinks does not know the facts to present some false accomplishments in favor of Israel especially in light of his back-stabbing on Yerushalayim, his associations with pro-terrorist Arab groups in Chicago, etc...

I mentioned this lie to a friend of mine who supports Obamarama, and was told- "It's not lie, he didn't say he was on the committee, he just said it was his committee."

Huh?
