Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Iraqi security forces are massing more than 30,000 soldiers and police for an upcoming operation against al Qaeda and the Mahdi Army in the eastern province of Diyala, according to police and military officials.

The operation, which was expected to be launched this week, has been scheduled to kick off on August 1, an anonymous senior Iraqi military officer told AFP. "The operation is aimed at cleansing the region of insurgents, al Qaeda and militias who are still there," the officer said.

re: #91 Racer X

Gee, does anyone really think this is going to be a success now that an "anonymous senior Iraqi military officer" has spilled the beans to the media?

Hey, where did they all go?

This is how third world, particularly Arab military or police forces operate. Arrange a big show for the visiting Americans. Make lots of loud noises and be sure the troops look inspection ready. Somehow though the word always gets out and the targets slip away. Remember the Americans will one day leave and everyone else will remain. Nobody wants to get caught up in a blood feud. Besides everyone is really related to some degree and you can't hurt your Uncles Cousins Nephews In Laws Niece's husband. If that fails everyone is a Muslim and protected (except for the few who are not and who are targets). Like with canine packs a leader's aggression is used to compel signs of submission after which the threat recedes. Saddam violated this rule by actually going after people and communities. In that he showed himself more a student of the secular soviets than of the religious tribal culture of Iraq. AQI also violated the expected standard and lost the tribes.

Gee, does anyone really think this is going to be a success now that an "anonymous senior Iraqi military officer" has spilled the beans to the media?

Hey, where did they all go?

AQ and Mahdi guys drug their asses to Diyala to avoid getting killed in Sadr City and elsewhere. Iraqi Army isn't just lining up in Diyala at some starting line. They have undoubtedly cordoned off the area, and the locals (who hate both groups) will let 'em know where to go. They also have other assets in play. The Iraqi army is actually getting good at this stuff.

Besides everyone is really related to some degree and you can't hurt your Uncles Cousins Nephews In Laws Niece's husband. Waaiitt a minute. I always heard that "there's NO rest for the wicked".

I think that means that the wicked must always look over their back to protect themselves from being caught by those they have harmed, which is true.

Whereas the other one means that in performing wicked acts they occasionally take a respite, although I'm not sure if this is true.

So, perhaps they can co-exist.

One can only hope, if he wins, that he's hampered by ordinary Americans who give him a resounding defeat, first in two years at the 2010 Congressional election, and then in 2012, when he seeks reelection. I can't imagine he'll do well enough in office to fool the majority of ordinary Americans.

Respectfully, the day when the print media could swing an election passed with the coming of CNN - not because CNN was, well, the Communist News Network, but because the arrival of CNN on the scene meant that other visual medial had to get going themselves, with more hours devoted to news than entertainment (though in politics one can easily make the argument that that was an easy switch).
Seriously, I'm beggining to doubt the Visual Media's ability to swing an election, especially THIS coming election. I know a lot of folks say they haven't made up their minds, but frankly I think they are lying through their teeth.

Pack of (30) giant Russian bears kill and eat 2 Russians.

[Link: www.breitbart.com...]

A pack of enormous bears searching for food killed and ate two men at mines in Russia’s Pacific Kamchatka region and have kept hundreds of geologists and miners from reaching the mine, news agencies reported Wednesday.
A pack of up to 30 Kamchatka bears—which are similar to grizzlies—prowled around two mines of a local platinum mining company where they killed the two guards on Thursday, local officials were quoted by the Russian ITAR-Tass news agency as saying. About 400 company workers have refused to return to the mines for fear of the bears, which stand 10 feet tall on their hind legs and weigh up to 1,500 pounds, Interfax reported.

About 10 bears have also been seen near the village of Khailino sniffing fish remains and other garbage.

Village official Viktor Leushkin was quoted by ITAR-Tass as saying that a team of hunters will be dispatched to shoot or chase off the bears.
“These predators have to be destroyed,” Leushkin was quoted as saying. “Once they kill a human, they will do it again and again.”

Rampant fish poaching in the Kamchatka tundra often forces the bears to seek other sources of food, such as garbage. Bears frequently attack humans in the scarcely populated peninsula region.

One can only hope, if he wins, that he's hampered by ordinary Americans who give him a resounding defeat, first in two years at the 2010 Congressional election, and then in 2012, when he seeks reelection. I can't imagine he'll do well enough in office to fool the majority of ordinary Americans.

The Clintons' overreach led directly to the GOP winning control of the House for the first time in 40 years.

The question is: how much damage could Barry do in 2 years?

I guessing a lot. Even though McCain is a Big Government "moderate" Republican and could give us plenty of nonsense (Amnesty?), those 2 years of "free rein" is a risk we can't afford.

Don't forget, as far as Dems go, Bubba was fairly central, and in his first two years he had a Congress led by an old guard Dem (Gephardt). The first two years of the most radical socialist ever in the White House aided by a Nancy Pelosi Congress is an untold disaster of epic proportions. Um, not likely. Reagan nearly beat Ford in the primaries and made a big impression in the process (I was old enough to notice). Even if Ford had beaten Carter, Reagan would have been elected in 1980, regardless.

Army may go unpaid as sanctions dry up supply of paper for Zimbabwe banknotes

The Zimbabwean government is struggling to find enough cash to pay its workers, and more importantly the military, after it was forced to cut back on printing money because sanctions have severed its supply of banknote paper from Europe.

Officials involved in the printing say the regime fears the presses could be shut down altogether if further political pressure causes the withdrawal of software licences used to design and print notes.

Paper money is already in short supply because the state-run Fidelity Printers & Refiners in the capital, Harare, cannot keep up with demand created by the hyperinflation and rapid devaluation that causes notes to lose almost their entire value within weeks of being issued.

Obviously there are exceptions: Dems who will always vote Dem, Repubs who'll always vote Repub and the like and this year Blacks will vote more than 90% for Obama - he's the first and may be the last chance they have to see a Black POTUS and frankly, as terrible as Obama is, I understand Black Americans voting for him. But the rest of the great masses will vote based on who they trust the most.

The upcoming Obama Riot/Car Torch: Berlin

Via Drudge - [Link: www.dw-world.de...]

In the build-up to what is probably the most anticipated American campaign speech ever held on foreign soil, one of Berlin's main city magazines offered its readership cut-out American flags to wave at Barack Obama's planned address.

The presumed Democratic nominee plans to arrive in the German capital on Thursday morning. Not much of his agenda for the day has been made public, but he is set to speak at Berlin's Victory Column -- formally the main site of the Love Parade -- at 7PM local time.

Those who want to hear Obama live have been told to start arriving three hours earlier. Berlin authorities say that as many as a million people could attend. Four TV stations are broadcasting the entire speech, and the rest are scrambling to secure prime locations at the site.

Only around 13,000 Americans live in Berlin. So what is motivating Berliners and Germans in general to treat a Democratic presidential hopeful to such a royal welcome?

Well, first off it is just an estimate, but you do raise a good question.

One thing that is not on most Lizards' radar (I suspect) is the Law of the Sea treaty. For some reason the US Senate is really dragging its feet on this one, even though American entities (private enterprise, US Navy) are for it.

The big argument over "ownership" will only come into play when talking about areas beyond the conventional (commercial interest) shore distances. However, the pissing match here may not really be an issue for the US, but rather for Norway, Denmark, and Russia.

He says he is so old that he learned to drive an internal combustion engine car (remember those) with a manual transmission. He once owned a typewriter. He remembers when bicycles had one speed, phones had two-party lines, and cameras had something called film. As incredible as this may seem, he says that when he was young, it was common for people to smoke in restaurants and public places. He is from a different time; almost a different world.

I’m sure all of us are far too familiar with the tragic events of 2010, so Rick is not going to plow that fertile field again. Instead, he is going to give us a personal look back at the conditions which led up to that fateful year, in a speech titled “2010 Was Not A Good Year To Be President.”

Yes, 2010 was long ago and far away.

As we look back on history, it appears that some Presidents had an easy ride- times of growth and stability. Teddy Roosevelt, Warren G. Harding, Dwight Eisenhower, Bill Clinton come to mind. Those were good years to be President.

Others were elected just when the Republic was facing terrible crises: Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, George W. Bush. They rose to the occasion, even though they were controversial and widely hated while in office. Not such good years to be President.

Just a few years prior, in 2008, the country began foundering. We were in the sixth year of the Iraqi Occupation, and the economy was flat. The mainstream press clearly wanted a Democrat elected. Although we didn’t know it until some years later, oil producing nations had colluded to secretly buy their own oil on the open market, driving oil prices to shocking levels above the true demand price- reaching a high of $162 a barrel in October, 2008, just before the general elections. Their purpose was simple: to effect regime change in the United States.

And of course, the U.S. economy was already in a real estate slump and also suffering the curse of stagflation; slow growth and high inflation. There were a million home foreclosures. Independent truckers went under by the thousands. Airlines failed. Airlines with names now long-forgotten: United, Delta, Northwestern, American. All now merged, of course, into the one lone U.S. carrier we love so much: Southwest.

Against this backdrop of weariness of the war on terror, and economic distress, the American people were ripe for a demagogue, and they certainly got one in Barack Hussein Obama. He and his running mate Kathlene Sibelius inspired them with vague notions of hope and change; of a world in which diplomacy settled all international problems, of free universal health care, of abundant alternative energy, of peace and love. It was a vision too good to resist.

The Republican nominee, a name you probably haven’t heard in years: John McCain, an obscure Senator from Arizona who had no clue how to run a national campaign, and a platform nearly as liberal as Obama’s. The selection of Condoleeza Rice as his running mate looked brilliant at first. Unfortunately, black voters viewed her as white, and women voters viewed her as one of the guys. Even so, the McCain/Rice ticket would have won the election if it weren’t for the fact that 16 percent of conservative Republicans voted for anyone remember? That’s right, Bob Barr, another name that’s a footnote in history.

After Obama’s narrow win, thanks to recounts in Broward County, Florida, the country was positively giddy. A Democrat House, Senate, and President. At last an end to gridlock in Washington. Camelot!

(Continuing)

When Congress convened in January, 2009, the 44th President of the United States did something unique in history: he made good on his campaign promises. Certainly most Americans never really thought he was serious during the campaign. But whether because of inexperience, idealism, or simply incompetence, he followed through. In Obama’s first One Hundred Days, the Congress passed his initiatives, and he signed them into law as he said he would.

He repealed the Bush tax cuts, and increased capital gains taxes. He enacted a windfall profits tax, and instituted price controls on gasoline and diesel fuel. He passed universal health care, which added an additional 10 percent tax increase on all working Americans. He signed the Immigrant Amnesty bill which created 12 million new citizens instantly, each with entitlements. He closed the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, and summarily released all the detainees. He repealed the Patriot Act, and cut funding for espionage, and eliminated all terrorist listening and wiretaps.

Most important, he began the complete and immediate withdrawal of all American troops from Iraq. He ignored the advice of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who wanted to retain bases in Kuwait and Qatar. Instead, he went with the recommendation of Secretary of Defense Dennis Kucinich, and ordered all troops back to U.S. soil.

Viola! In One Hundred Days, by May of 2009, it was all done, and the vision was complete. He did exactly what he said he would do.

And so it was in the summer of 2009 that things began to unravel for Obama.

Of course, the economy needed a tax cut, not an increase, and unemployment quickly rose to 12 percent. Even attorneys and economists were put in the bread lines. Price controls on gasoline immediately led to shortages and gas lines. The global cooling trend we have seen for the past 25 years first became obvious in 2009, exposing the CO2 global warming fraud. Federal deficits increased massively because thousands of baby boomers, facing job loss and much higher taxes, simply gave up and took social security. Although the superb U.S. health care system was thrown into disarray, the bright spot was the creation of the Federal Department of Health care, and the immediate hiring of 250,000 administrators, inspectors and auditors, the only job growth in any economic sector in 2009.

By February 2010, the U.S. military withdrawal from Iraq was complete. It was a very expensive undertaking. And then in March, the gradual Shiite insurgencies from Iran turned into a true Iraqi civil war. In May, Iranian tanks crossed the border and quickly took Baghdad. Although the exact number is not known, at least 230,000 Sunni Iraqis died as we stood by. Iran also quickly moved into undefended Kuwait.

President Obama did exactly what he said he would. He sent Secretary of State, Maria Cantwell, to Tehran to meet with Iranian President Ahmadinejad. After two weeks of high level talks, the United States agreed to allow Iran to retain Iraq and Kuwait to create stability in the Middle East, with the understanding that Israel would not be disturbed. Cantwell returned to Washington, and explained the agreement in her famous speech, in which she proudly noted that the Obama administration had finally achieved “peace in our time” in the Middle East.

So there was some surprise at the rocket attacks on Tel Aviv on August 14th.

President Obama said, “This is not the Mahmoud Ahmadinejad I knew.” The Obama administration decided it would be de-stabilizing to take sides in the conflict, and approximately 29,000 Israeli civilians died during the summer and fall. American Jews were appalled at the inaction. Yes, in 2010 most American Jews were Democrats, but because of 2010, they are solid Republicans today.

As awkward as it was, everything might have turned out all right for the Obama administration going into the fall mid-term elections of 2010, if it hadn’t been for the dirty bomb in the Port of Long Beach.

(Continued, once more)

279 Fat Jolly Penguin  Thu, Jul 24, 2008 12:17:17am

(Finishing)

The administration had cut funding for the inspection of containers, because they felt it showed a “lack of trust” in the international trading community.

It wasn’t really a very big bomb, and thank goodness, not a real nuclear device, but nonetheless it contaminated some expensive real estate-Newport Beach, Palos Verdes Estates- and ultimately caused the death of 14,000 Americans. People were especially annoyed that Disneyland had to be closed for decontamination.

And so, in the midterm elections, Republicans regained control of both the House and Senate, and the rest is history. The impeachment proceedings against President Obama for “failure to protect and defend” were swift and nearly unanimous. Vice President Sibelius resigned. Newly-elected Speaker of the House, J.C. Watts, became the 45th President of the United States.

But you know the rest of the story well. Republicans finished the war on Islamic fundamentalists, largely by aiming ICBM’s at Mecca and Medina. No Democrat has been elected President since. Republicans have held both Houses of Congress. History of Western Civilization and Economics are now taught in all public schools, and in English only. Marriage is defined as one man and one woman. And there are border fences, north and south.

We old codgers remember the ancient Confucian curse: “May you live in interesting times.” Well, 2010 was an interesting year, but it was not a good year to be president.”

And on that note, I'm off to bed. Good night!

WTF.. I do not want to be a European my family left there soooooo many years age and I keep reminding my family that is here that we in no way want to be like Europe

However,

LINK

Those wishing to attend have been advised that signs and posters will be prohibited at the speech—a move that has come in for criticism particularly from the left. There has been speculation that the Obama camps wants to avoid pictures of Germans making anti-American statements that could hurt the candidate back home.

Others say the ban is aimed at preventing political activists from making demands of Obama on uncomfortable issues. The World Wide Fund for Nature plans to flout the prohibition by issuing members T-shirts with pictures of polar bears and the words “Yes, You Can!” as a way of encouraging Obama to take a tougher line on environmental protection.

Moreover, some residents of Germany’s perennially cash-strapped capital have taken umbrage at the fact that Obama’s visit will cost a half-million euros ($786,000)—half of which will be born by German public funds.

How come the German and the Berlin taxpayer has to pony up 250,000 euros so that Obama gets a nice television backdrop for his campaign?” asked one irritated blogger on the website of a local newspaper.

But another was quick to respond.

“What do want, McCain to win?” that person asked. “It would be good if Obama won, and he can only do that if he convinces voters back home via the TV. So let the cameras show masses of people flocking to Obama through the Brandenburg Gate.”

Obama originally wanted to speak at that symbolic location, but the event was moved after concerns that the Gate shouldn’t be used for political purposes. Now the Democratic candidate hopes that huge crowds of cheering supporters, mostly foreign, at Victory Column will help him win November’s election in the US.

It would suck to be them.

Barack Obama’s big Berlin rally is being sold to U.S. voters as reason to vote for him. Yes, Germans do love Obama, but a look at what they think of the rest of us raises questions about the cheering.

A May-June Gallup poll released July 23 shows that 62% of Germans want Obama elected president over just 27% who would prefer John McCain. It’s a German landslide.

Opinions about leaders are one thing. But Germany’s negative attitudes extend well beyond Bush to a significant loathing of America, mostly based on its global influence and its success.

Obama may demand on the campaign trail that no one dare question his patriotism, but for Germans, disliking the U.S. is nothing to hide. Yet this is the place Obama’s team thought would be best to hold a rally to boost his campaign.

That is relevant to why Germans are cheering for Obama. He has consistently expounded a worldview that espouses the moral equivalency of nations, rather than importance of U.S. leadership. He’s a big fan of letting the U.N. make America’s foreign policy decisions, consistent with shrinking U.S. influence in the world. He has also expressed embarrassment at the U.S. compared with Europe.

Why will they cheer? Because they see a less influential America coming with an Obama presidency.

Among Germans, 88% believe the U.S. influences events in their country despite a simultaneous belief that the U.S. is a spent power; 47% think that influence is a bad thing; only 12% call it good. And 80% believe America has a negative impact on Germany’s economy — an idea so plainly wrong as to be laughable.

Blaming America first may be nice for Germany’s anti-Americans. But trying to influence U.S. voters with a campaign rally of people who loathe much of what America stands for strikes us as poor judgment.

Whatever "negative" coverage Obama gets from his fawning friends he brings on himself. Come on...20 years of going to the same church with the same pastor...and he didn't know he was a raving lunatic racist? Morning all! I don't have a TV but I wouldn't believe news reports anyhow.

We have another DISASTER going on here in New Orleans. A HUGE oil spill occurred here in the Mississippi river! The river is closed for at least 3 weeks during clean up. Some unlicensed tug boat drivers created some sort of boat crash and one was carrying oil. I smelled something horrible yesterday thinking I spilled some chemicals that I didn't know i had, but I didn't have anything. Then, a neighbor thought the smell was exhaust from the workers on the street.

Only to find out this is unrefined oil, with lots of benzine. I have no idea if we will need to leave town or not during the clean up because our water supply comes from the river.

I wish I had some water filters. As it is they are saying not to drink the water. I don't even know if I can bathe as the water in the tap smells very chemical-ley. This is really bad and I doubt we will get any real information about what's going on as far as health and safety are concerned.

Hey Jim, I'm in the lower garden dist, not far at all from algiers.

I might have to do something really rude and beg for donations in order to stock up on water or get a good filter for the sink. THe tub I have is too old for a filter, dammit. If its okay with Charles that I ask for some help with paypal - i just now added my addy. THis is a very worrisome situation. WIthout water, it never even occurred to me we would be in a situation like this.

I don't have a car and being I live on a fixed (very small) income - I can't consider leaving leave town. I was planning on staying if another big hurricane came by. No one even considered this happening.

I don't even know if I should take a chance having a shower ! The water smells really bad. THIS IS FUCKED! Please don't make jokes about blaming Bush etc. THis isn't a funny situation at all.

/I know mine needs a lot of work some mornings.

I'm teaching an SAT prep course. The College Board added a writing/grammar test a few years ago. Most school districts have abandoned the formal teaching of grammar with all the correct terms under the theory that just writing will improve students' knowledge of structure.

My theory is that learning the the terms and usage of grammatical structure gives students the tools to write clearly, precisely, and correctly.

Relax. The article seems to indicate that they have shut the water intakes and are bringing in water from outside the area. The number one danger is from drinking petroleum filled water. Showering should be okay. If the water stinks, then wait to shower. Opening your water taps for 10 minutes or so every couple hours will purge your line. Buy a couple of gallons of water, which should last you a week, until you find out more information.

They say (in the pdf file) that the 'sediment prefilter' should be replaced every 1-3 months for optimal performance. If you're not a heavy user of water (like lawn watering) than 3 months should be fine. There's a special plastic wrench (that you may have been given) that makes the job easier. If you hear a crashing sound, that will be the economy in Brazil.

Brazil boosts interest rate to 13%

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Brazil's interest-rate policymakers Wednesday evening raised its key rate to 13%, a level higher than had been anticipated by economists.

In a unanimous decision, the central bank's rate committee, known as COPOM, pulled the benchmark Selic rate up by 75 basis points as it moved to curb rising inflationary pressures from increased consumer demand and the worldwide surge in commodity prices.

If you understand the "multiplier theory" in macroeconomics, you will understand how drastic of a move this is for Brazile.

Malaysia's inflation soars to 26-year high in June

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Malaysia's consumer price inflation soared to a 26-year high in June, official data showed Wednesday, heightening expectations that the central bank will hike interest rates at its meeting later this week.

The consumer price index rose by 3.9% month-on-month in June to 7.7% year-on-year, Malaysia's department of statistics reported Wednesday. In comparison, the CPI index rose by 3.8% in May.

As inflation keeps increasing around the world, the US will more and more become a safe haven of economic stability for foreign capital.

"The CreditWatch listing reflects an accelerating pace of total revenue decline and a rate of decline in EBITDA in the first half of 2008 that indicates the company may have difficulty achieving our expectations for the current rating," said Emile Courtney, an S&P credit analysts.

It's a mixed bag.

To the extent that the US interest rates are lower in relative terms, the dollar will depreciate as capital flows towards the higher interest rates elsewhere. But, once the fear of inflation gets instilled, capital will tend to flow back to the US as the US goods are cheaper for other's to buy and as capital runs away from the inflation to keep purchasing power.

The US tends to be better at fighting inflation than most other countrys, for a whole lot of technical reasons I won't bore you with.

Upshot is, we will be fine once oil prices settle down.

Yes. Some countrys just don't do a good job of dealing with inflation. Believe it or not, the US generally does a good job of it. Keep an eye on inflation in the EU too. I think that is ready to take off.

Yeah, I think Zimbabwe is at the top of the "not good" list. Their paper currency isn't worth wiping your posterior.

"Over here"

It amazes me that the world has gotten so small in terms of our ability to communicate. You could be right next door, instead you are half a world away. What causes you to be there? Are you native or just transient?

Good morning Lizards, rightside... long time no see....

Great poll in the WSJ this week showing McCain leading every important category with the voters. Obama? He leads categories such as likeability and compassion. Give me a break! Is it possible that the American voters are dumb enough to elect this tool on "style" alone?

The ultimate result of communism. Zimbabwe is coming attractions for Venezuela in 10 years, by the way.

Yes. Sad but true. The hope is that when people actually go to vote, better judgement will kick in & they will avoid buyers remorse.
