Vermont Cable System Renews Contract for Jihad TV

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 9:02:33 am PDT

Despite the depraved content of the Arabic version of Al Jazeera, which openly supports terrorism, the municipally-owned cable system in Burlington, Vermont will continue to carry the slicked-up, sanitized English version: Vermont Cable System To Continue Carrying Al Jazeera English.

In a press release, Burlington Telecom said it was not disclosing the terms of its newly forged carriage deal with Al Jazeera English, the international channel based in Doha, Qatar.

The cable system has been offering the network since January 2007 on its “second-level tiers of channels,” not basic service, the statement said.

“We very much appreciate the support of our small but very significant audience in Burlington, Vt.,” said Will Stebbins, Washington bureau chief for Al Jazeera English. “It’s a testament to the fact that if you actually see our channel, it’s impossible to have any of the misunderstandings,” he said.

“All the misunderstandings and the mystery and the mischaracterizations about who we are disappear the moment that you see our channel,” he added. “We are a very valuable international news source, and that was clearly recognized in Burlington, Vt., by those who have actually had the chance to see us.”

The Burlington Telecom Advisory Committee and the local Cable Advisory Committee have both recently reviewed whether or not the cable system should continue to carry Al Jazeera English, with at least one meeting in May.

As it turns out, both committees jointly and unanimously recommended that Burlington Telecom keep the channel. That recommendation was forwarded to the cable system, Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss and the city council.

Al Jazeera English has struggled to secure distribution in the United States, only getting carried in a handful of systems, including Buckeye CableSystem in Toledo, Ohio.

Speaking of moonbat areas of the country: the San Francisco Chronicle just published this column:

Let's just get this part of the discussion out of the way: I'm not even going to pretend that John McCain has a broken condom of a chance at a term in the Oval Office. Barack Obama is going to be our next president, and our next first lady is going to be the coolest grand dame in United States history. The first couple, incidentally, is going to burn up the presidential bed.

OK, the Obamas are a hot and cool couple, and they seem to be more in touch with the real world outside of D.C. than any presidential couple to hit the White House sheets. But Barack's going to have to don a hazmat suit and a full-body condom to even begin to clean up the mess he's inheriting. Iraq, for starters. But let's not forget about the children, shall we? You know, the ones getting pregnant and contracting STDs at jaw-dropping rates and at younger ages than previous generations in spite of ... perhaps, even because of federally funded (read: "state strong-armed") abstinence education. In which "education" should always be in quotes.

...etc.

I have a slightly moonbattish cousin who moved up there, and he's totally agog that the natives despise the newcomers.

Personally, I think the problem is the "broadminded" liberals are in reality a very insular group. They only associate with people who feel the same way they do. In situations where they can control, they institute PC mandates to prevent views other than their own from being aired. Then they mistakenly believe this means the majority believes the same things they do. Open debate and true tolerance don't exist. Their views are the enlightened ones, so there's no point in even admitting any chance of validity in opposing ones.

The problem with a state like Vermont is that it is so small, it doesn't take many people to change the political makeup. Most people don't bother to vote, but the moonbats are ideologically driven. They get their people in office, and the damage begins.

I had a discussion about this with a moonbat who was all in favor of it. I asked him how he planned to defend the state. He went on a rage that "not even" the Bush administration was so evil to launch military action against Vermont, and he continued on a general anti-military rant. I pointed out that all it would take was a small group of Neo-Nazis or Aryan Nation folk to move to the state before the secession. They'd easily be able to take over, install a government to their liking, and the pacifist moonbats would be an extinct species soon.

Suddenly, he was very in favor of the US invading the state in those circumstances.

The levels of self-deception these folks must go through to cling to their world-view is staggering.

There was a time when a certain level of high school dropoutism was considered acceptable. Most people get along just fine thoughout their entire lives without using algebra or mastering Newtonian physics.

Bluntly, the world contains dumb people, as well as lazy ones, and not everyone is capable of the academic accomplishment necessary to graduate high school.

Raising the expectation such that every single entering kid is expected to graduate has had the perverse effect of lowering the standards for everyone else. Simply, if you want EVERYONE to pass, you have to dumb things down.

This leads to the result where many colleges entry level classes are in effect remedial level high school classes.

Someone on the morning thread mentioned that NPR was already trying to tie McCain and his stance on offshore drilling to the oil spill on the Mississippi. Only problem was the oil that spilled was bio-diesel. I didn't know we could drill offshore for that.

Vermont is actually one of the only states in the Union that has no laws whatever prohibiting the carry of firearms (Alaska used to be this way, don't know if it still is). Want to carry a gun there? Go right ahead, not only is no license required, but you don't even have to be a state resident.

Which isn't to say that Vermonters actually take advantage of that right. I'd imagine that the second they did, they'd lose it!

Is there very little incremental cost to carry content over the Cable? Seems as if the majority of revenue comes from advertising and connection fees, so even if one twenty-fifth of one percent of the total potential viewers will consider looking at a channel, it's a potential winner... Also there's the issue of brand differentiation. If that Cable Provider can get some press the old adage "... As long as they spell my name correctly!" applies?

Of course lots of dropouts have no marketable skills. The same factors that lead them to dropout also factor into not acquiring any.

Again, the problem is that you can't take every lazy and/or stupid person, and transform them into a valuable member of society by putting them in a classroom 6 hours per day for a few years. Its a beautiful ideal, really, but it just ain't reality. Not everyone is prepared to benefit from education.

As to the use of a college degree, many (though certainly not all) of them are simply pieces of paper certifying that the earner has at moderate amount of intelligence and the ability to do hard work.

A good credential for many jobs, but in some cases the degree earner probably would have been better off just working straight out of high school, and getting the "degree" of four years experience.

If you look at elementary school or high school texts from 50, 60 or 75 years ago, you realize that a high school diploma in the '30s or '40s was equivalent at least to a junior college degree today, if not indeed to a bachelor's from all but the best schools.

I'd venture to say that a high-school graduate in the 1920-1960 era knew MORE than the average college graduate today, for the mere fact that their heads weren't filled with propaganda and balderdash that will take a lifetime to unlearn (if it can ever be unlearned at all).

Modern high school and college students are not only failing to acquire knowledge: they are actively being fed anti-knowledge.

The American class was nonsense. The overseas class made us learn something.

That's because the overseas class was actually preparing you to work in a trade/skill.

Germany used to have (may still) a test that basically separated your high school-level track along university or vocational lines. It was not your choice, as it is in the US.

Having said that, in my high school in the Dark Ages, the counselor had to let you into a vo-tech course...and if you had better than a "C" average, you weren't allowed in.

I'd say this is true to some extent, but its a little more complicated than that. There are huge differences between the standards between different high schools, and in many cases in between the varying classes within the SAME high school.

There are plenty of high schools today (even public ones) where the advanced students are doing college level work (eg Advanced placement classes), and the high school graduates come out stronger than graduates of junior colleges.

The question is how much are you going to lower the bar for the average or better students to accomodate the worse ones.

Also, while I agree in principle that the bar has been lowered over the years, I don't think its true that any American high school in the 1940s was putting out graduates with the equivalent educations of graduates of strong Universities (today or then). Which high schools in the 40s taught differential equations, organic chemistry, etc?

I'm not talking about higher math and complex science. I'm talking about basic algebra and geometry, proper English and a reasonable default knowledge of history and literature, perhaps a smidgen of a foreign language, and maybe some basic science and some vocational skills.

High schools today turn out graduates who cannot read, write or make change; who know nothing of history, have no reading background, etc. And I have met "college graduates"--some from well-known schools--who are not much better.

My dad, who just turned 80, went to school in a one-room shack in the W. Va mountains when he went to school at all. As an adult, he got a job with the civil service and worked his way up. Before he retired, his job was basically to review all the work done by MBAs from "good" schools who couldn't do basic math and didn't understand elementary accounting.

My mother went to high school at a slightly larger school in the Virginia mountains. She had four years of Latin, could do complex math problems in her head, and had a solid grasp in history, geography, grammar, spelling and music.

My nephew is in high school and cannot spell, do any math without a calculator and would be hard pressed to find Europe on a map. He thinks global warming is going to kill us all, loves Michael Moore movies and thinks he's going to be given a high-paying job when he graduates because he "deserves" it.

I went back to grad school after a long absence from college. I covered material in more depth as an undergraduate in the 80s than it's covered in my classes now. I have classmates who can't write a simple, grammatically correct sentence and don't bother to use spell checkers because it never occurs to them that they don't know what they're doing. One of my self-admitted Communist professors acknowledged that the university had lowered the standards to the point the degree was worthless.

While it is true that certain skills like writing and geography are no longer emphasized, I don't really think Americans today are any stupider (or smarter) than 30 or 60 years ago.

Nor do I really believe that our top schools are any worse nor that our best and brightest aren't getting the best possible educations. The top American universities consistently rank among the best in the world (often THE best).

Again, to be blunt, I think the main difference is that today many more stupid Americans are walking around with (meaningless) high school diplomas and college degrees.

Its simply the logical end-result of "grade inflation" and a proliferation of second (and third, and fourth) tier universities.

If you think things are bad here, I understand that in Japan, equivalent of a McDonald's manager-type position requires the Japanese equivalent of a Master's degree.

FYI
This is not THE cable company for the entire state of Vermont. Statewide, Vermont offers Adelphia, Comcast, and Charter Communications.

Burlington Telecom is a local "alternative" (for lack of a better word!) liberal titty-suck for the city of Burlington only. Here is more info... [emphases mine]

About Burlington Telecom

The City of Burlington, like many other small cities and towns around the USA, has decided to ensure that all of Burlington’s citizens and business have the up-to-date telecommunication services they need by building a municipally owned 21st century fiber optic infrastructure.

When finished this infrastructure will pass every home and business in the City and will be able to carry virtually unlimited amounts of traffic and services. As such, this network will be the "electronic public road" system of the future, capable of delivering all the services that are rapidly appearing and which will be basic to the lives and economy of communities in the coming decades.

Although we are a City Department, this network is privately financed and clean of any taxpayer contributions. To pay for the effort, Burlington Telecom will provide the three basic services itself: cable TV, telephone, and high-speed Internet. But anyone else will also be free to use the network to deliver these or other services. (This is similar to a City providing public roads while also providing basic bus service as well. Citizens and businesses can use the bus service or they can use the roads to provide their own transportation.)

[snip]

True, the entire state of Vermont is pretty screwy and extremely liberal (sorry, Granny), but just wanted to clarify the details of this.

Sick, evil people run that place.
