Obama Speaks in Front of Berlin Monument

Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 10:07:37 am PDT

Barack Obama’s speech in front of Berlin’s Victory Column is about to begin. Here’s an open thread for it; the crowd looks enormous.

The history of the Victory Column makes it a rather peculiar choice for this speech.

The Victory Column originally stood in Königsplatz (now Platz der Republik), at the end of the Siegesallee (Victory Avenue). As part of the preparation of the monumental plans to redesign Berlin into Welthauptstadt Germania, in 1939, the Nazis relocated the column to its present site at the Großer Stern (Great Star), a large intersection on the city axis that leads from the former Berliner Stadtschloss (Berlin City Palace) through the Brandenburg Gate to the western parts of the city. At the same time, the column was augmented by another 7.5 meters, giving it its present height of 70 meters. The monument survived World War II without much damage. The relocation of the monument probably saved it from destruction, as its old site in front of the Reichstag was destroyed.

Surrounded by a heavily trafficked street circle, pedestrians can reach the column through four tunnels, built in 1941 to plans by Albert Speer.

UPDATE at 7/24/08 10:32:09 am:

How in the world do you give a speech about the fall of the Berlin Wall ... and not even mention Ronald Reagan?

UPDATE at 7/24/08 10:36:57 am:

Obama’s only comment about the American presidents who have spoken in Berlin before him: “I know that I don’t look like the other Americans who’ve previously spoken in this great city.”

The Victory Column is a famous sight in Berlin, Germany. Designed by Heinrich Strack after 1864 to commemorate the Prussian victory in the Danish-Prussian war, by the time it was inaugurated on 2 September 1873 Prussia had also defeated Austria in the Austro-Prussian War (1866) and France in the Franco-Prussian War (1870/1871), giving the statue a new purpose. Different from the original plans, these later victories in the so-called Unification Wars inspired the addition of the bronze sculpture of Victoria, 8.3 meters high and weighing 35 tonnes, designed by Friedrich Drake. Berliners, with their fondness for giving nicknames to famous buildings, call the statue Goldelse, meaning something like "Golden Lizzy".[1]

listening to Rush, Pelosi says Bush is sitting on oil, the strategic petroleum reserve, "Mr. President, free our oil!"

She's a moron.

Access to the reserve is determined by the conditions written into the 1975 Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA), primarily to counter a severe supply interruption. The maximum removal rate, by physical constraints, is 4.4 million barrels per day (700,000 m³/d). Oil could begin entering the marketplace 13 days after a Presidential order. The Dept. of Energy says that it has about 59 days of import protection in the SPR. This, combined with private sector inventory protection, is estimated to equal 115 days of imports.

We don't have a supply interruption, we have increased demand.

Obama Has Time to Go Sightseeing But Not Meet Wounded Veterans
Ed Morrissey notes a Der Spiegel report that Obama is skipping his planned meeting with U.S. troops in Germany:

++ Visit to US Military Bases Cancelled ++

1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

Certainly there could be circumstances that justify this, but Obama said this morning: "we've got some down time tonight. What are you guys gonna do in Berlin? Huh? Huh? You guys got any big. plans? ...I've never been to Berlin, so...I would love to tour around a little bit."

It would be egregious for Obama to snub wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan at Landstuhl--especially after rejecting an invitation to attend a townhall with veterans, service members, and military families at a U.S. base.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Obama campaign finds a way to make it to Landstuhl. If they don't, it will look like the trip to Iraq and Afghanistan was nothing more than a photo-op with Petraeus and the troops.

OBAMA Lures Massive German Crowd With Rock Bands, Brats & Beer

HERE's a video of a Raemonn rock concert to give you an idea of what kind of crowd you might expect today.

Ah - the crowd is having a good time, listening to German Pop Stars and all, drinking beer and generally ahving a party in the nice summer weather.
As far as at least 60% of the crowd are concerned, BO is an addition to the party, not the mainc rowd puller.

This same thing happened in Seattle, iirc, where these huge crowds where shown on the MSM reports - but only alter were we told that a rock concert had been organised at that venue before BO's speech.

Nothing new - and that crowd is certainly not an indicator for Obamania, much as his campaing would love us to think so!

How in the world do you give a speech about the fall of the Berlin Wall ... and not even mention Ronald Reagan?

All of my moonbatty friends will tell you that Reagan had nothing to do with the fall of the Berlin Wall....In fact, most of them will tell you that Reagan's saber rattling and Star Wars only prolonged the situation.

Gorbachev was the real hero who tore down the Iron Curtain, no thanks to Ronald Reagan.

And many stupid Europeans feel the same way.

"

415 lawhawk  Thu, Jul 24, 2008 10:45:18am

Ah yes, thank you Germany for providing a nice backdrop/prop for an American presidential candidate to show that he truly doesn't have much sense of history.

At least here in Germany Obama was more interactive with the crowd than he was in Afghanistan, where he blew off US troops serving in the war that the leftists generally admit as being somewhat tangentially related to US national security.

"Barack Obama will not be coming to us," a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. "I don't know why." Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.

Here's the essential snips from both Kennedy's and Reagan's Berlin speeches:

There are many people in the world who really don’t understand, or say they don’t, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who say that communism is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin. And there are some who say in Europe and elsewhere we can work with the Communists. Let them come to Berlin. And there are even a few who say that it is true that communism is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress. Lass’sie nach Berlin kommen. Let them come to Berlin. — President John F. Kennedy, 1963

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! — President Ronald Reagan, at the Brandenburg Gates 1987

612 jcm  Thu, Jul 24, 2008 10:58:23am

Text of speech....

I come to Berlin as so many of my countrymen have come before. Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen - a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world.

[snip]

The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand.

[snip]

This is the moment when we must renew the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

[snip]

This is the moment when we must build on the wealth that open markets have created, and share its benefits more equitably.

[snip]

This is the moment when we must come together to save this planet. Let us resolve that we will not leave our children a world where the oceans rise and famine spreads and terrible storms devastate our lands. Let us resolve that all nations - including my own - will act with the same seriousness of purpose as has your nation, and reduce the carbon we send into our atmosphere. This is the moment to give our children back their future. This is the moment to stand as one.

[snip]

Will we acknowledge that there is no more powerful example than the one each of our nations projects to the world? Will we reject torture and stand for the rule of law? Will we welcome immigrants from different lands, and shun discrimination against those who don't look like us or worship like we do, and keep the promise of equality and opportunity for all of our people?

[snip]

People of Berlin - and people of the world - the scale of our challenge is great. The road ahead will be long. But I come before you to say that we are heirs to a struggle for freedom. We are a people of improbable hope. With an eye toward the future, with resolve in our hearts, let us remember this history, and answer our destiny, and remake the world once again.

One then ought to remember that it did happen here. People were arrested for speaking out against the war, and against the president. There are a lot of Euro countries fighting with us in Iraq and Afganistan and cooperating with anti-terror crap as well.

The whole Europe isn't with us is BS.

Germans voted for pro-US Merkel, French the pro-US Sarkozy, Poland, etc,.

It's all leftist BS PR against Bush to score political points.

Remember, Clinton tried to "create a coalition" before he bombed Iraq and every single one of them said "NO!" so he went it alone.

How about that UN approval for bombing Serbia?

What? There wasn't any?

This whole they hate the US and we work unilaterally is BS.

And someone should tell me how the US, in a post cold war, post 9/11 world working towards advancing its national interest in the various vaccums left in the world (and changing spheres of influence) is "acting unilaterally" - as if that's a bad thing - and the left ignoring that the REST OF THE WORLD IS DOING THE SAME THING.

I never understood the idea of Nuclear Elimination.

Now sure I understand the theory, but do people actually believe that if you get the Countries to promise not to use them that somehow (a) one Country won't reneg on the deal realizing that if they are the only Country with Nukes they hold all the cards, or (b) some rogue non-State will get them and hold the entire word hostage?

It is a really great, and pretty idea, but anyone that believes it is attainable is a moron.

Nuclear weapons are now merely an engineering problem, and a material problem. Both are within the resources of many nations or anyone with the will and resources.

To eliminate nuclear weapons you'd have to eliminate all knowledge of quantum physics, nuclear physics etc....

Weapons are only a small subset of that knowledge.

(Lady Airy was Margaret Thatcher's closest friend).

One day she (my friend) was talking about the many nuclear disarmament demonstrations then happening in Europe, and Lady Airy told her that the leftist/Marxist demonstrators were so well organized that it only took one single phone call from Moscow, and within two days they would have 10,000 students in the streets of Amsterdam demanding that the US "disarm ".

So the more things change.....

Address on behalf of Senator Barry Goldwater
Rendezvous with Destiny
October 27, 1964
Y

ou and I have the courage to say to our enemies, "There is a price we will not pay." There is a point beyond which they must not advance. This is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater's "peace through strength." Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits--not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty."

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on Earth, or we will sentence them to take the last step into a thousand years of darkness.

I found Bolton's book pretty unreadable and boring, and I ADORE him. He's much better speaking IMHO.

It is a bit turgid - but some of his analyses are extremely illuminating, and his clear-sightedness is brilliant.

Mind - it is a very difficult topic, and he is not so much writing an autobiography as giving a tour-de-force of what happened, abckground and all players included.
So I shall persevere - with Goldberg's book as 'light' relief ...

re: #786 Maine's Michael

One interesting point.

Obama's choice of Berlin was inspired.

Obama's popularity in the USA hinges to a large extent upon white guilt.

Germany has the motherload of racial guilt,

Love Obama, and Germany's racial sins are washed away . . .

Sobering, to say the least. . .because the fact that so many WHITES believe this about him is sad. . .wonder if blacks think the same thing? Does this absolve the past? Is this the "last frontier"

It kind of seems to me that this is a no win situation for whites- if he is elected, it will not be the guilt enema they were hoping for, and if he is not elected, racism is still to blame. . .

For all the hype about this speech what a big disappointment. All the talking heads from MSM prior to the speech said it would be a tough speech toward Europe and Germany. Did I miss something? And lets get real here - that was one hell of a large crowd. However as large as it was I thought is was somewhat muted. Hell a German crowd after a soccer match, even a wiener dog race, with much fewer people make more noise. And if he thinks Germany will commit more troops to Afghanistan he's nuts. He should try just getting the current one to change their rules of engagement or actually get in the actual fight.

The Soldier Voting Scandal

[Link: www.gopusa.com...]

Rep. Roy Blunt, the House Republican whip, on July 8 introduced a resolution demanding that the Defense Department better enable U.S. military personnel overseas to vote in the November elections. That act was followed by silence. Democrats normally leap on an opportunity to find fault with the Bush Pentagon. But not a single Democrat joined Blunt as a co-sponsor, and an all-Republican proposal cannot pass in the Democratic-controlled House.

Unfortunately, those Berliners who'd remember the Air Lift were not present, due to age (and wisdom, I hope!).
I mean - the Air Lift was 60 years ago - most of the crowd wasn't even a twinkle in the eyes of their grandparents. And the Wall is pretty much ancient history as well for those youths who were there.

re: #805 hermeneutics

Good one. Really, I think he just overreached and blew the election.

If McCain is smart, he'll grab clips from this speech and play them over and over and over. He'll win Penn, VA, OH and MI with this sort of one-worldism speech.

In AZ and NM, however, the Hispanics may find this appealing. They may like the one-world mantra. But, honestly, I doubt it. Most Hispanics who come here permanently think of themselves as Americans. As a whole, Hispanics are true-blue patriots.

Did you see where Obama complained to Fox reporter Major Barrett because some troops were watching Fox News in Afghanistan or Iraq? [Remember during the First Iraq war, only CNN existed, Fox only began in 1996].

This just in- From Powerlineblog

"Politics is largely about priorities; so is life, for that matter. Barack Obama's priorities were put into sharp relief today when he canceled visits to two American military bases in Germany. He still has time, of course, to play the "rock star" in front of cheering multitudes of Germans. Ed Morrissey broke the story:

Der Spiegel’s blog reports on Obama’s priorities:
1:42 p.m.: SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that Obama has cancelled a planned short visit to the Rammstein and Landstuhl US military bases in the southwest German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The visits were planned for Friday. “Barack Obama will not be coming to us,” a spokesperson for the US military hospital in Landstuhl announced. “I don’t know why.” Shortly before the same spokeswoman had announced a planned visit by Obama.
The message here is that thousands of screaming German fans at the Tiergarten take precedence over visiting Americans serving their country at Rammstein and Landstuhl. Maybe one of the networks following Obama could interview a few of the soldiers about how they perceive that set of priorities from Obama.

Landstuhl, of course, is where soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan are sent for treatment. Obama's visit there no doubt would have included meeting some of them.

It turns out that Obama didn't stiff the servicemen because of a schedule conflict. Rather, as Jake Tapper pointed out, apparently without knowing that Obama had canceled planned visits to the two military installations, Obama is going sightseeing in Berlin tonight. I can't say it any better than Ed did:

Obama canceled a previously-planned stop to visit thousands of American service personnel, including troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan being treated at Landstuhl, so he could hold a political rally for Germans and go shopping in Berlin. Now that’s a nice set of priorities for a man who wants to become Commander in Chief."

How anyone could consider voting for this guy is beyond me.
