Perfect end to a hectic week: ziti with a homegrown tomato and arugula sauce topped with toasted almonds, a huge romaine-and-red-onion salad with chunks of homegrown tomatoes and thin slices of cucumbers, crusty bread, followed by a long bubble bath and now, Patty Griffin and a nice tot of Basil Hayden's.

Seven reasons why people hate reason
23 July 2008
Special Report from New Scientist Print Edition.

Linguist Noam Chomsky talks about reason and exaggerated claims.
Penrose talks about when we need to sidestep reason
Bioethicist Tom Shakespeare talks about why reason doesn't tell a good story.

From religious fundamentalism to pseudoscience, it seems that forces are attacking the Enlightenment world view – characterised by rational, scientific thinking – from all sides. The debate seems black and white: you’re either with reason, or you’re against it. But is it so simple? In a series of special essays, our contributors look more carefully at some of the most provocative charges against reason. The results suggest that for all the Enlightenment has achieved, we still have a lot of work to do.

You can't actually read most of the articles without being a subscriber, but even the titles and intros are interesting, and you can always buy the hardcopy.

You can be sure much of the stuff is wrong, btw, but some of it may well be right.

Well done Big Steve. Do you work out?

I am 6'6" so 300 lbs isn't too awful. Yes do work out but not religiously, maybe 2 to 3 times a week. However was diagnosed with diabetes 8 months ago or at least something called incipient diabetes. So took out obvious sugar and no alcohol which was easy since I don't drink much. Otherwise pretty much eat what I like. Blood sugar running between 100 to 110 so that is about normal.

My wife has a rule....if I ever want to mess around behind her back, it has to be with only women born in the 50's and ones that will have sex with me. She was feeling pretty safe about item 2 until recently. I haven't even taken her up on this by the way.

I do not believe this woman has had plastic surgery. In the opening interview she exhibits a high degree of facial mobility, deep nasolabial folds and no accompanying brow lift or eyelid reduction. She looks good to me. She has high cheekbones and a high bridged nose that lends the appearance of facial skin tautness. The criticism is unfounded in my opinion. Her music is beautiful too.

177 Bob in Breckenridge  Fri, Jul 25, 2008 7:23:59pm

From the Times of London...All bow to the Obamessiah...

He ventured forth to bring light to the world

The anointed one's pilgrimage to the Holy Land is a miracle in action - and a blessing to all his faithful followers

By Gerard Baker

And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.

The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.

When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”

In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary, wife of the deposed King Bill the Priapic and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites.

And so it was, in the fullness of time, before the harvest month of the appointed year, the Child ventured forth - for the first time - to bring the light unto all the world.

He travelled fleet of foot and light of camel, with a small retinue that consisted only of his loyal disciples from the tribe of the Media. He ventured first to the land of the Hindu Kush, where the

Taleban had harboured the viper of al-Qaeda in their bosom, raining terror on all the world.

And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them. And in the great battle that ensued the forces of the light were triumphant. For as long as the Child stood with his arms raised aloft, the enemy suffered great blows and the threat of terror was no more.

From there he went forth to Mesopotamia where he was received by the great ruler al-Maliki, and al-Maliki spake unto him and blessed his Sixteen Month Troop Withdrawal Plan even as the imperial warrior Petraeus tried to destroy it.

And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child's very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light.

And the Persians, who saw all this and were greatly fearful, longed to speak with the Child and saw that the Child was the bringer of peace. At the mention of his name they quickly laid aside their intrigues and beat their uranium swords into civil nuclear energy ploughshares.

From there the Child went up to the city of Jerusalem, and entered through the gate seated on an ass. The crowds of network anchors who had followed him from afar cheered “Hosanna” and waved great palm fronds and strewed them at his feet.

In Jerusalem and in surrounding Palestine, the Child spake to the Hebrews and the Arabs, as the Scripture had foretold. And in an instant, the lion lay down with the lamb, and the Israelites and Ishmaelites ended their long enmity and lived for ever after in peace.

As word spread throughout the land about the Child's wondrous works, peoples from all over flocked to hear him; Hittites and Abbasids; Obamacons and McCainiacs; Cameroonians and Blairites.

And they told of strange and wondrous things that greeted the news of the Child's journey. Around the world, global temperatures began to decline, and the ocean levels fell and the great warming was over.

181 Bob in Breckenridge  Fri, Jul 25, 2008 7:24:30pm

Part 2-

The Great Prophet Algore of Nobel and Oscar, who many had believed was the anointed one, smiled and told his followers that the Child was the one generations had been waiting for.

And there were other wonderful signs. In the city of the Street at the Wall, spreads on interbank interest rates dropped like manna from Heaven and rates on credit default swaps fell to the ground as dead birds from the almond tree, and the people who had lived in foreclosure were able to borrow again.

Black gold gushed from the ground at prices well below $140 per barrel. In hospitals across the land the sick were cured even though they were uninsured. And all because the Child had pronounced it.

And this is the testimony of one who speaks the truth and bears witness to the truth so that you might believe. And he knows it is the truth for he saw it all on CNN and the BBC and in the pages of The New York Times.

Then the Child ventured forth from Israel and Palestine and stepped onto the shores of the Old Continent. In the land of Queen Angela of Merkel, vast multitudes gathered to hear his voice, and he preached to them at length.

But when he had finished speaking his disciples told him the crowd was hungry, for they had had nothing to eat all the hours they had waited for him.

And so the Child told his disciples to fetch some food but all they had was five loaves and a couple of frankfurters. So he took the bread and the frankfurters and blessed them and told his disciples to feed the multitudes. And when all had eaten their fill, the scraps filled twelve baskets.

Thence he travelled west to Mount Sarkozy. Even the beauteous Princess Carla of the tribe of the Bruni was struck by awe and she was great in love with the Child, but he was tempted not.

On the Seventh Day he walked across the Channel of the Angles to the ancient land of the hooligans. There he was welcomed with open arms by the once great prophet Blair and his successor, Gordon the Leper, and his successor, David the Golden One.

And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

Did anyone else see this? (linked at Drudge). A ddiscussion/comparison about Obams's week vs. McCain's week....

For the most part, the side-by-side images weren't pretty:

_Obama meeting with leaders in Iraq, McCain on a golf cart in Kennebunkport, Maine, with the first President Bush.

_Obama before a sweeping Mideast landscape, McCain holding a news conference in a supermarket in Bethlehem - Pennsylvania, that is - and narrowly escaping an attack from a tumbling stack of apple sauce jars.

_Obama delivering his trip's keynote speech at Berlin's Victory Column, McCain eating bratwurst and chatting with reporters at a German restaurant in Columbus, Ohio.

McCain responds philosophically when asked about being overshadowed by his rival's overseas trip and outsize attention: "It is what it is."

McCain has inched ahead of Obama in Colorado, come within inches in Minnesota and narrowed the gap in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters in these battleground states. The polls, taken for The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com, showed voters in each state saying energy policy is more important than the war in Iraq.

I could not agree more. Music and the culture from which it originates, are inseparable. After growing up in Austin, TX, I lived a large part of my life overseas. The one thing I missed the most, was live American music (all genres, even rap). American music dominates the music market worldwide.

There is a reason for that artistic dominance, Freedom.

The Enquirer felt it had sufficient goods to bring a criminal complaint against the hotel for its treatment of their reporters chasing after Edwards. And FoxNews confirmed that Edwards was there, as the Enquirer says.

There are also claims that the Enquirer also had photos or video of the encounter, which I figure it's holding for use at an opportune moment (though this would certainly count as one).

Danger, Taranto at work:

Most news reports put the attendance at Obama's big Berlin rally last night at 200,000. According to Rosenthal, however, "the estimates given by German public television ZDF actually during the event, however, were as many as 10 times lower"--which is to say, one-tenth as high:
ZDF began its special "Obama in Berlin" coverage [German video] at 6:45 p.m. Central European Time: only 15 minutes before the candidate's speech was scheduled to start. At the time, ZDF reporter Susanne Gelhard was out and about on the so-called "Fan Mile" between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate. "The expectations were highly varied," she said in her live report, "from a few thousand up to a million. Those were the estimates. But, now, several tens of thousands have turned out." Barely five minutes before the speech was supposed to start, ZDF Berlin studio chief Peter Frey added, "We do estimate that 20,000 [literally, "a couple of ten thousand"] people have turned out."

What accounts for the discrepancy? Maybe when Obama himself showed up, the reporters mistook him for a zero.

Lizards. I should maybe wait for an open thread but I am going to bed soon. Normally I am not too serious but on this topic I am not smiling. Sometime in the next week the MSM will start going nuts to the fact that Texas is going to execute Jose Ernesto Medellin on August 5. Mr. Medellin will be the first of the 51 foreign nationals that were recently denied clemency due to not having been allowed to contact their government upon arrest and now will be executed. This is a highly political topic world-wide. However lost in the high minded debate of matters of state is the details of the crime Mr. Medellin actually committed.

Living in Houston at the time the crime took place and living close to the actual place, I want to make sure some of you do know the details. This story defies pejorative adjectives so I am purposely not using any in referring to Mr. Medellin.

The details of what happened are well described in the link below. However the description is graphic and I know that this warning doesn’t often stop people but in this case you really might have nightmares about this crime. So only read if you really want to be educated on this.
Ertman/Pena Murder Houston

One thing that has struck me as odd is that the government of Mexico is saying that Mr. Medellin was not informed of treaty rights to be able to contact his government at the time of his arrest and trial. Medellin had lived in the US since he was 9 at the time. However, and I looked this up, this crime was the biggest story in the Houston papers for weeks. Here is a link to a Houston Chronicle article from July 1, 1993 just a few days after the crime that clearly notes that Mr. Medellin was “Mexico born.” So where was the Mexican Consulate in Houston? Why did they not contact Mr. Medellin then?
Houston Chronicle July, 1993

When you read the description of what happened, you will realize that there was nothing the government of Mexico could have done even if they had taken any initiative to contact Mr. Medellin. They could have resurrected Daniel Webster to defend Mr. Medellin and a Harris county jury would have still given him a death sentence.

Anyway, as the debate starts to rage over the next two weeks and assuming Texas governor Rick Perry doesn’t want to get impeached, I suspect this execution will proceed. Just wanted to let my colleagues here be able to read up on some of the details.

All of the above....and that he was an ambulance chaser who channeled a baby who had CP. That is beneath contempt. My 8 year old granddaughter has mild CP, but does everything. She was a micro-preemie, weighting 1 lb. 8 oz at birth, who was born before week 25, and who lost her fraternal twin sister the next day. She also has a rare genetic condition. She had so many complications, and was given a 35 % chance of survival...she is the Energizer Bunny, and overcame it all.

Her daddy, my son, is a lawyer who would never even entertain the idea of suing. We all are just thankful to G-d that this delightful kid takes dancing lessons, and has been reading to the kindergarteners in her public school since she was in Grade 1. She was reading at age 3, just like her Dad. She is also at horseback riding day camp this summer.

Thujone is also similar to Safrole from the sassafras tree, which is why it is impossible to get real root beer anymore. I think I'll make some sassafras tea tomorrow and thumb my nose at the USFDA.

re: #283 Big Steve

Similar case here in St. Louis some years back, but with gang bangers rather than illegals. 3 or 4 guys kidnapped two college girls from a bar, raped them, then threw them off a Mississippi River bridge to their deaths. 1 or 2 of 'em didn't get the death penalty because they were "juveniles" (but big enough 'men' to rape and kill women), and another one had his death sentence overturned because he was of below average intelligence.

Since then, Missouri has become a concealed carry state. If the state won't guarantee justice for the people, the people have to watch out for themselves.

Everything he speaks of is degrading or demeaning one group or another.

He's been manufactured by the media and the Dems. I think on the Dems' part it's--well, Gore and Kerry had long records that people examined and hated. Hillary Clinton has a long record that people have eamined and rejected. How about we try a good-looking, superficially eloquent young man with no record or background that people can examine? He's not Bush!

I have friends who claim to be for Obama. However, they are bright, thoughtful people. I think as the time come close, they'll reflect on this untested cipher with the terrible connections, and, in the privacy of the voting booth, do the right thing.

It will be as shocking to the media as 2000 and 2004 were, and they will be partly responsible for the riots that will ensue when Obama is "robbed" of his "inevitable" victory.

Speace was in an artists cooperative 5 to 10 years ago or so called Urbanmusenyc. Most or all of them were of the left but they are good people and talented.
Amy Fairchild wrote a great song about 9-11 called Tuesday.
The non-group also had Jenny Bruce, Jo Davidson, and Karen Jacobsen. Rachael Sage, Sarah Lentz and Jennifer Marks. All girly music but at the time I'd have rather heard that at some club on Stanton Street or Hoboken than most of what people pay for.

The Kid wants to get him a buddy. No problem. Hamsters seem to like being around other hamsters. I just don't wanna' get a hamster of the opposite sex. I've looked at Petey's crotch but, I still cannot figure it out.
