Seven reasons why people hate reason
23 July 2008
Special Report from New Scientist Print Edition.
Linguist Noam Chomsky talks about reason and exaggerated claims.
Penrose talks about when we need to sidestep reason
Bioethicist Tom Shakespeare talks about why reason doesn't tell a good story. From religious fundamentalism to pseudoscience, it seems that forces are attacking the Enlightenment world view – characterised by rational, scientific thinking – from all sides. The debate seems black and white: you’re either with reason, or you’re against it. But is it so simple? In a series of special essays, our contributors look more carefully at some of the most provocative charges against reason. The results suggest that for all the Enlightenment has achieved, we still have a lot of work to do.
You can't actually read most of the articles without being a subscriber, but even the titles and intros are interesting, and you can always buy the hardcopy.
You can be sure much of the stuff is wrong, btw, but some of it may well be right.

Well done Big Steve. Do you work out?
I am 6'6" so 300 lbs isn't too awful. Yes do work out but not religiously, maybe 2 to 3 times a week. However was diagnosed with diabetes 8 months ago or at least something called incipient diabetes. So took out obvious sugar and no alcohol which was easy since I don't drink much. Otherwise pretty much eat what I like. Blood sugar running between 100 to 110 so that is about normal.
My wife has a rule....if I ever want to mess around behind her back, it has to be with only women born in the 50's and ones that will have sex with me. She was feeling pretty safe about item 2 until recently. I haven't even taken her up on this by the way.

I do not believe this woman has had plastic surgery. In the opening interview she exhibits a high degree of facial mobility, deep nasolabial folds and no accompanying brow lift or eyelid reduction. She looks good to me. She has high cheekbones and a high bridged nose that lends the appearance of facial skin tautness. The criticism is unfounded in my opinion. Her music is beautiful too.

I'm pretty sure she did not get a boob job either.

From the Times of London...All bow to the Obamessiah...
He ventured forth to bring light to the world
The anointed one's pilgrimage to the Holy Land is a miracle in action - and a blessing to all his faithful followers
By Gerard Baker
And it came to pass, in the eighth year of the reign of the evil Bush the Younger (The Ignorant), when the whole land from the Arabian desert to the shores of the Great Lakes had been laid barren, that a Child appeared in the wilderness.
The Child was blessed in looks and intellect. Scion of a simple family, offspring of a miraculous union, grandson of a typical white person and an African peasant. And yea, as he grew, the Child walked in the path of righteousness, with only the occasional detour into the odd weed and a little blow.
When he was twelve years old, they found him in the temple in the City of Chicago, arguing the finer points of community organisation with the Prophet Jeremiah and the Elders. And the Elders were astonished at what they heard and said among themselves: “Verily, who is this Child that he opens our hearts and minds to the audacity of hope?”
In the great Battles of Caucus and Primary he smote the conniving Hillary, wife of the deposed King Bill the Priapic and their barbarian hordes of Working Class Whites.
And so it was, in the fullness of time, before the harvest month of the appointed year, the Child ventured forth - for the first time - to bring the light unto all the world.
He travelled fleet of foot and light of camel, with a small retinue that consisted only of his loyal disciples from the tribe of the Media. He ventured first to the land of the Hindu Kush, where the
Taleban had harboured the viper of al-Qaeda in their bosom, raining terror on all the world.
And the Child spake and the tribes of Nato immediately loosed the Caveats that had previously bound them. And in the great battle that ensued the forces of the light were triumphant. For as long as the Child stood with his arms raised aloft, the enemy suffered great blows and the threat of terror was no more.
From there he went forth to Mesopotamia where he was received by the great ruler al-Maliki, and al-Maliki spake unto him and blessed his Sixteen Month Troop Withdrawal Plan even as the imperial warrior Petraeus tried to destroy it.
And lo, in Mesopotamia, a miracle occurred. Even though the Great Surge of Armour that the evil Bush had ordered had been a terrible mistake, a waste of vital military resources and doomed to end in disaster, the Child's very presence suddenly brought forth a great victory for the forces of the light.
And the Persians, who saw all this and were greatly fearful, longed to speak with the Child and saw that the Child was the bringer of peace. At the mention of his name they quickly laid aside their intrigues and beat their uranium swords into civil nuclear energy ploughshares.
From there the Child went up to the city of Jerusalem, and entered through the gate seated on an ass. The crowds of network anchors who had followed him from afar cheered “Hosanna” and waved great palm fronds and strewed them at his feet.
In Jerusalem and in surrounding Palestine, the Child spake to the Hebrews and the Arabs, as the Scripture had foretold. And in an instant, the lion lay down with the lamb, and the Israelites and Ishmaelites ended their long enmity and lived for ever after in peace.
As word spread throughout the land about the Child's wondrous works, peoples from all over flocked to hear him; Hittites and Abbasids; Obamacons and McCainiacs; Cameroonians and Blairites.
And they told of strange and wondrous things that greeted the news of the Child's journey. Around the world, global temperatures began to decline, and the ocean levels fell and the great warming was over.
Part 2 below...

Part 2-
The Great Prophet Algore of Nobel and Oscar, who many had believed was the anointed one, smiled and told his followers that the Child was the one generations had been waiting for.
And there were other wonderful signs. In the city of the Street at the Wall, spreads on interbank interest rates dropped like manna from Heaven and rates on credit default swaps fell to the ground as dead birds from the almond tree, and the people who had lived in foreclosure were able to borrow again.
Black gold gushed from the ground at prices well below $140 per barrel. In hospitals across the land the sick were cured even though they were uninsured. And all because the Child had pronounced it.
And this is the testimony of one who speaks the truth and bears witness to the truth so that you might believe. And he knows it is the truth for he saw it all on CNN and the BBC and in the pages of The New York Times.
Then the Child ventured forth from Israel and Palestine and stepped onto the shores of the Old Continent. In the land of Queen Angela of Merkel, vast multitudes gathered to hear his voice, and he preached to them at length.
But when he had finished speaking his disciples told him the crowd was hungry, for they had had nothing to eat all the hours they had waited for him.
And so the Child told his disciples to fetch some food but all they had was five loaves and a couple of frankfurters. So he took the bread and the frankfurters and blessed them and told his disciples to feed the multitudes. And when all had eaten their fill, the scraps filled twelve baskets.
Thence he travelled west to Mount Sarkozy. Even the beauteous Princess Carla of the tribe of the Bruni was struck by awe and she was great in love with the Child, but he was tempted not.
On the Seventh Day he walked across the Channel of the Angles to the ancient land of the hooligans. There he was welcomed with open arms by the once great prophet Blair and his successor, Gordon the Leper, and his successor, David the Golden One.
And suddenly, with the men appeared the archangel Gabriel and the whole host of the heavenly choir, ranks of cherubim and seraphim, all praising God and singing: “Yes, We Can.”

Did anyone else see this? (linked at Drudge). A ddiscussion/comparison about Obams's week vs. McCain's week....
For the most part, the side-by-side images weren't pretty:
_Obama meeting with leaders in Iraq, McCain on a golf cart in Kennebunkport, Maine, with the first President Bush.
_Obama before a sweeping Mideast landscape, McCain holding a news conference in a supermarket in Bethlehem - Pennsylvania, that is - and narrowly escaping an attack from a tumbling stack of apple sauce jars.
_Obama delivering his trip's keynote speech at Berlin's Victory Column, McCain eating bratwurst and chatting with reporters at a German restaurant in Columbus, Ohio.
McCain responds philosophically when asked about being overshadowed by his rival's overseas trip and outsize attention: "It is what it is."
McCain has inched ahead of Obama in Colorado, come within inches in Minnesota and narrowed the gap in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters in these battleground states. The polls, taken for The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com, showed voters in each state saying energy policy is more important than the war in Iraq.

I could not agree more. Music and the culture from which it originates, are inseparable. After growing up in Austin, TX, I lived a large part of my life overseas. The one thing I missed the most, was live American music (all genres, even rap). American music dominates the music market worldwide.
There is a reason for that artistic dominance, Freedom.

The Enquirer felt it had sufficient goods to bring a criminal complaint against the hotel for its treatment of their reporters chasing after Edwards. And FoxNews confirmed that Edwards was there, as the Enquirer says.
There are also claims that the Enquirer also had photos or video of the encounter, which I figure it's holding for use at an opportune moment (though this would certainly count as one).

Danger, Taranto at work:
Most news reports put the attendance at Obama's big Berlin rally last night at 200,000. According to Rosenthal, however, "the estimates given by German public television ZDF actually during the event, however, were as many as 10 times lower"--which is to say, one-tenth as high:ZDF began its special "Obama in Berlin" coverage [German video] at 6:45 p.m. Central European Time: only 15 minutes before the candidate's speech was scheduled to start. At the time, ZDF reporter Susanne Gelhard was out and about on the so-called "Fan Mile" between the Victory Column and the Brandenburg Gate. "The expectations were highly varied," she said in her live report, "from a few thousand up to a million. Those were the estimates. But, now, several tens of thousands have turned out." Barely five minutes before the speech was supposed to start, ZDF Berlin studio chief Peter Frey added, "We do estimate that 20,000 [literally, "a couple of ten thousand"] people have turned out."What accounts for the discrepancy? Maybe when Obama himself showed up, the reporters mistook him for a zero.

Lizards. I should maybe wait for an open thread but I am going to bed soon. Normally I am not too serious but on this topic I am not smiling. Sometime in the next week the MSM will start going nuts to the fact that Texas is going to execute Jose Ernesto Medellin on August 5. Mr. Medellin will be the first of the 51 foreign nationals that were recently denied clemency due to not having been allowed to contact their government upon arrest and now will be executed. This is a highly political topic world-wide. However lost in the high minded debate of matters of state is the details of the crime Mr. Medellin actually committed.
Living in Houston at the time the crime took place and living close to the actual place, I want to make sure some of you do know the details. This story defies pejorative adjectives so I am purposely not using any in referring to Mr. Medellin.
The details of what happened are well described in the link below. However the description is graphic and I know that this warning doesn’t often stop people but in this case you really might have nightmares about this crime. So only read if you really want to be educated on this.
Ertman/Pena Murder Houston
One thing that has struck me as odd is that the government of Mexico is saying that Mr. Medellin was not informed of treaty rights to be able to contact his government at the time of his arrest and trial. Medellin had lived in the US since he was 9 at the time. However, and I looked this up, this crime was the biggest story in the Houston papers for weeks. Here is a link to a Houston Chronicle article from July 1, 1993 just a few days after the crime that clearly notes that Mr. Medellin was “Mexico born.” So where was the Mexican Consulate in Houston? Why did they not contact Mr. Medellin then?
Houston Chronicle July, 1993
When you read the description of what happened, you will realize that there was nothing the government of Mexico could have done even if they had taken any initiative to contact Mr. Medellin. They could have resurrected Daniel Webster to defend Mr. Medellin and a Harris county jury would have still given him a death sentence.
Anyway, as the debate starts to rage over the next two weeks and assuming Texas governor Rick Perry doesn’t want to get impeached, I suspect this execution will proceed. Just wanted to let my colleagues here be able to read up on some of the details.

All of the above....and that he was an ambulance chaser who channeled a baby who had CP. That is beneath contempt. My 8 year old granddaughter has mild CP, but does everything. She was a micro-preemie, weighting 1 lb. 8 oz at birth, who was born before week 25, and who lost her fraternal twin sister the next day. She also has a rare genetic condition. She had so many complications, and was given a 35 % chance of survival...she is the Energizer Bunny, and overcame it all.
Her daddy, my son, is a lawyer who would never even entertain the idea of suing. It tasted like a bland version of Sambuca - licorice flavored liquor, which makes sense since some of the same ingredients are used.

Similar case here in St. Louis some years back, but with gang bangers rather than illegals. 3 or 4 guys kidnapped two college girls from a bar, raped them, then threw them off a Mississippi River bridge to their deaths. 1 or 2 of 'em didn't get the death penalty because they were "juveniles" (but big enough 'men' to rape and kill women), and another one had his death sentence overturned because he was of below average intelligence.
Since then, Missouri has become a concealed carry state. If the state won't guarantee justice for the people, the people have to watch out for themselves.

van Gogh had epilepsy. The onset of symptoms depressed him greatly. He discusses this in many, many letters he wrote. You might be thinking of Toulouse Lautreck.

Mine too but I go to Amsterdam alot and when I have a free half day I always go to the van Gogh museum. They have several hundred of his paintings and you can walk right up to them on the wall. They also have his diaries and many of his letters. He was not the half crazed lunatic artist as he is depicted. In fact he was fluent in Dutch, German, French, and English. Many of his letters are in English.

He's been manufactured by the media and the Dems. I think on the Dems' part it's--well, Gore and Kerry had long records that people examined and hated. Hillary Clinton has a long record that people have eamined and rejected. How about we try a good-looking, superficially eloquent young man with no record or background that people can examine? He's not Bush!
I have friends who claim to be for Obama. However, they are bright, thoughtful people. I think as the time come close, they'll reflect on this untested cipher with the terrible connections, and, in the privacy of the voting booth, do the right thing.
It will be as shocking to the media as 2000 and 2004 were, and they will be partly responsible for the riots that will ensue when Obama is "robbed" of his "inevitable" victory.

Speace was in an artists cooperative 5 to 10 years ago or so called Urbanmusenyc. Most or all of them were of the left but they are good people and talented.
Amy Fairchild wrote a great song about 9-11 called Tuesday.
The non-group also had Jenny Bruce, Jo Davidson, and Karen Jacobsen. Rachael Sage, Sarah Lentz and Jennifer Marks. All girly music but at the time I'd have rather heard that at some club on Stanton Street or Hoboken than most of what people pay for.

I've just spent 20 or so minutes tracking down Petey who escaped from his NEW AND IMPROVED CAGE.
The Kid wants to get him a buddy. No problem. Hamsters seem to like being around other hamsters. I just don't wanna' get a hamster of the opposite sex. I've looked at Petey's crotch but, I still cannot figure it out.
Do I need a magnifying glass?
If my memory is correct... it requires some palpatating, to make the particular clue display itself (either version).

You have no idea how much I want to see him have to explain it in public. I can only imagine what this is doing to his wife and kids.
Excellent points, BTW. Deep down? I wish that Obama had named him as his VP, and then have this break...I just wonder what the reaction would be.
Yes, IIRC, the magazine/scandal sheet (if I can call it that) was supposed to release either photos and/or video as proof a day or so ago.
The Republican's won't touch it, they can't with Newt Gingrich's history and Giuliani's marriages. Even though Rudy was the sick party. The LAT has buried this, officially. Wish we could get billboards up blasting them. Since Obama has no message to run against (Hope?, Change?) we have to go against his messengers.

They say 'loose panel':
In this instance an outer skin panel close to the wing and adjacent to one of the forward cargo hold doors separated from the rest of the airframe. Pictures of the aircraft clearly show that this was a system failure rather than being caused by, for example, an internal or external explosion. The panel in question appears to have been ripped away cleanly by the passage of the wind over the skin of the aircraft.

Yes.
The incident occurred during Obama's Berlin speech, which was EXACTLY on the other side of the Earth.
In layman's terms, the Suck Inversion (SI) created by the empty platitudes, tired rhetoric, and cookie-cutter anti-Americanism went right through the planet and snatched that panel right off the jet.

I just hope that enough people find this so reprehensible, even in the Demonratic party...to have an illegitimate baby with his mistress while the same wife who lost their son in an auto accident, and who went on to have a few younger babies, to provide Silky Pony a male heir, is so reprehensible that it dwarfs Newt and Rudy's perfidies...Newt did it to a wife with Ca of the breast, also, IIRC...but there was no baby involved.
And I keep getting a feeling, seriously, that something re Osama will come out, hopefully after the convention, that will destroy the poseur, who has about as much ability to be President as my almost-2 year old grandson...who shows more common sense already than Obama has in his entire life. He just is not presidential material, and the Demonrats really were insulting their own party by letting him run.
They offer Shrillary and Obama? The worst of the worst? And Shrill would bring Bubba into the equation...Michelle Obama is bad enough.
McCain is a decent man...not the best choice, but I am proud to vote for him. His VP is the most important appointment he can make pre-election.
I cannot put Rudy or Newt into the same class of evil and selfishness that Edwards is in, and I will bet there are a lot of Dems, female and male, who are also disgusted at just how low he has gone..reaching bottom and still sinking.

Important piece on Russia-Sino Relations
When two states enter into alliance, the first thing they must do is stop treating each other as foes. There is a bit of wiggle room if the two states do not border each other as the United States and Soviet Union did not during World War II. But in cases of a shared land border, it is devilishly difficult to believe that those on the other side of the line have your back if they are still gunning for a piece of your backyard. If China and Russia are going to stand together against the United States — or really, anyone — in any way, shape or form, the first thing they have to do is stop standing against each other. And that is just about to happen.
There are still plenty of reasons to doubt the durability of this development. In terms of modern warfare, the islands are strategic irrelevancies, so their surrender is not exactly a huge gesture of trust. Achieving any semblance of economic integration between the two powers still would be more trouble and expensive than it would be worth, making any deepening of the bilateral relationship difficult. Russia’s demographic slide instills a perfectly logical paranoia in the Kremlin; Russians are outnumbered 7 to 1 by their “partner” in terms of population and 3 to 1 in terms of economic size — something that Russian pride will find far harder to accept than merely handing over some islands. There is no substitute to the American market for China. Period. Sharing Central Asia is simply impossible because both sides need the same resources to achieve and maintain their strategic aims. And neither power has a particularly sterling reputation when it comes to confidence building.
Yet while Moscow is known for many, many things, sacrificing territory — especially territory over which blood has been shed — is not on that list. Swallowing some pride to raise the prospect of a Chinese-Russian alliance is something that should not pass unnoticed. Burying the hatchet in the islands of the Amur is the first step on the improbable road to a warmer bilateral relationship, and raises the possibility of a coalition of forces with the geographic foundation necessary to challenge the United States at its very core.
Such a Chinese-Russian alliance remains neither natural nor likely. But, with the territory handover, it has just become something that it was not a week ago: possible.

Yes, I know of this case - don't agree/disagree about the root cause (too many loose ends on each side of the question), but highly disagree that it was transfered to LA for action.
On the east coast that would be like being arrested in NY, NY and having to appear in court in West Virginia
It is a bit far, but I doubt if the cultural mores will be any less sympathetic to his case. However, the jury may be able to convict purely on whether he violated federal law. California allows medical marijuana, the Feds don't.

Plus, how many peers of the defendant do you think they'll really find for the jury? I think this is a standard case of federal strong arming (or we don't care about your situation...).
I fought the IRS for ten years. My court dates were always sent to me the week after I was supposed to appear in San Francisco... with an attendant notice that I had failed to appear, and thus the judge ruled in the IRS favor. Russian bombers in Cuba will not go over well in Central and South America. And Cuba has not welcomed this news from the country that gave them up. It will promulgate the reconstruction of a Caribbean/ South Atlantic fleet if we have a normal President. Obama will try to surrender the country, but it will not go well. If Russia does that, expect a very large Iraqi air base, a new fleet with full marine invasion capabilities, new radar and anti-air deploys, and converted Boomers to move down to Mississippi and South Carolina. I think we have 4 or so we could convert to cruise missiles as we now have off China.

re: #524 experiencedtraveller Well let me put it to you this way:
a) Iran MAY have nukes, but since Israel still exists, I doubt it.
b) we DO have nukes and in theater, too.
c) Iran hasn't been in a war for over 25 years (and that was against the Iraqi's and even then they had to send 10, 11 year old children running through Iraq's minefields to "clear the way" for the Revolutionary guard).
d) Iran has been at war with the U.S. since 1979 when they invaded and took our territory - literally and they have continued that with arming Hezbollah to kill 250 US Marines in Beirut in 1983
e) they still at war with us as evidenced by the fact that they are still arming our enemies in Iraq and in fact have sent some of their special forces into Iraq to help the "freedom fighters" kill Americans - and we know this because we've caught some of 'em alive.
f) I am not advocating anything like a "half-baked" air strike; I want a full on air strike, cruise missles and anything else we can throw at em short of nukes - unless you're right and against all international espionage agencies and against the evidence that Israel is still standing, Iran has some nukes and uses 'em.
g) and most important, we can either take out their nuke developement facilities or, if they really are buried too deep, make sure that no one ever gets in or out again. Ever.

Generally agree with your take on this but do not doubt the media feel empowered to bury it.
My take on this on Belmont Club, hope I don't get banned everywhere for cross posting.
Buy a billboard near the LA Freeway and put this on it:
His Wife Is Dying of Cancer
He Was With HIs Mistress
He Might Become Vice-President
The LA Times Did Not Think You Have The Right to Know.
No further explanation should be offered.

I hear what everyones saying about helmets and their importance. Problem is that there are reasons people ride scooters/motorcycles and to ride at all is a risk that many would argue is stupid. I think Noam mentioned he wears a helmet but picks certain rides to go unprotected. For commuting I wear my helmet but a slow cruise to feel the true freedom of a hot summer day is worth a little risk.

"To halt this offensive buildup, a strict quarantine on all offensive military equipment under shipment to Cuba is being initiated. All ships of any kind bound for Cuba from whatever nation and port will, if found to contain cargoes of offensive weapons, be turned back. This quarantine will be extended, if needed, to other types of cargo and carriers. We are not at this time, however, denying the necessities of life as the Soviets attempted to do in their Berlin blockade of 1948."

Whenever I hear about Obama's scumbag father, I'm reminded of this scene from Fight Club:
Tyler Durden: If you could fight anyone, who would you fight?
Narrator: I'd fight my boss, prob'ly.
Tyler Durden: Really.
Narrator: Yeah, why, who would you fight?
Tyler Durden: I'd fight my dad.
Narrator: I don't know my dad. I mean, I know him, but... he left when I was like six years old. Married this other woman, had some other kids. He like did this every six years, he goes to a new city and starts a new family.
Tyler Durden: Fucker's setting up franchises.

Obama's brother's mother lives in a council house in Britain
welfare housing, paid for by the government taxes
and her son, Barak's half vrother FLIES BACK ANF FORTH FROM KENYA to visit her.
the POS has enough money to travel and visit, but not enough money to support his mother

The results of sexual conduct impact on the child. It is not a matter of right and wrong. No sane person wishes to punish or blame the child. Unfortunately the child has issues of anger and blame that can threaten society. That has been known for thousands of years. Denying that does not solve the problem. Obama and Jesse Jackson have the same emotional handicap of illegitimacy to deal with. In Obama's case it is worse because there are the added issues of race and the false marriage story he had to live with. The psychological effects of these events must be devastating for any child. America should not allow itself to be sacrificed as a stage for this man's therapy theater.

To reiterate from yesterday: I want a democratic Iran at peace with itself and its neighbors. Air attacks won't provide that. Never have, never will. Therefore, we search for options.
If you think a war with Iran is a good idea, you better find your old combat boots. We will need a million men on the ground in the ME.

That there is allegedly an illegitimate baby, who his girlfriend claims is the child of Andrew Young, who is black...DNA could be proof...is the part that Silky Pony will trip over.
The sign? If only. Fox may very well keep going with it, while the other networks say nothing, and the LA Times ignores. This is not going away. Eventually they, too, will carry the news. Here is an excellent article from Slate, of all places:
Why the Press Is Ignoring the Edwards "Love Child" Story:A double standard is at work.
And the wife with terminal breast cancer, and the younger kids? He really has very little wiggle room, if indeed he has any at all..

Then maybe we all go back to the sandbox together.
War is politics by other means. What are the political goals here?
We/someone replaces the mad mullahs or else it is all folly. I hear nobody talking about regime change. I hear talk of bombing 'supposed nuclear facilities'.
Machine shops are easily hid. Biological labs easier.
Air strikes, without a political foundation, will do nothing except provide the rational and motivation for unconditional response. And our infantry in Iraq will be the target.
No half wars!
