Overnight Chimp Thread

This chimpanzee knows exactly what that tranquilizer gun is supposed to do, and he doesn’t like it one bit.

Time for public input on a ZOMBIE DILEMMA:

Remember my Folsom Street Fair report from last year? How controversial it was? And how X-rated?

Well, I just got back from a very similar event -- a spin-off of the Folsom event, actually, also (apparently) sponsored by Miller Beer. So I'd thought I'd do a follow-up report on the whole controversy to see if Miller is still involved, and if the events they're sponsoring are still so controversial.

Well...I'm sure you can guess where this is leading. Today's event made the Folsom Street Fair look like an episode of Leave It to Beaver. There's X-rated, and then there's XXX-rated, which this was.

I made a vow not to self-censor, but I swear this will get me banned on several continents.

What do I do?

Publish the report, as before with blurred/unblurred versions of the key photos, consequences be damned?
Publish a censored version?
Just drop the whole thing, delete the photos, and go knit a sweater for my nephew?
Or...?

2 zombie  Sun, Jul 27, 2008 8:36:47pm

Just watched the video. Ha! And they say chimps aren't as smart as humans.

3 Occasional Reader  Sun, Jul 27, 2008 8:37:11pm

Two immediate reactions:

1) Those guys up there are brave. An angry chimp can put all kinds of really bad hurt on even a full-grown man. And that is one bigass chimp.

2) That said, I feel kinda bad for the chimp.

Publish a censored version?

That's my vote.

I think the story should be reported, on the one hand. Corporate sponsors for this sort of depravity? Their potential consumers should know. (For me, I can hardly drink Miller any less)

If it's as bad as you say, an unexpurgated version will be dismissed as voyeurism, on the other.

So a censored version seems the optimal route.

14 zombie  Sun, Jul 27, 2008 8:39:46pm

Don't forget that the anti-evolution crowd (or perhaps just entrepreneurs) brought a chimpanzee named Joe Mendi to the Scopes Trial in Dayton Tennessee in 1925. "Get a souvenir photo with your grandfather!" was the sarcastic pitch.

Buddy of mine was a zookeeper's assistant back in the day. He claimed he worked in the Orang house at the Houston zoo in the late 70s.

One of the big orange fellas got loose and took something like twelve shots from tranks to finally knock him out. Damn thing weighed almost 500 lbs, he claimed.

#3 got it right. Primates are not to be screwed with lightly.

If this happened the way you said it was, then I don't see how you can be punished to showing photos of a event that happened. I'd do the blurred/unblurred thing again, and load it up with plenty of warnings.

Admire my song, here's my coat
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Admire me, admire my home
Admire my song, admire my clothes

My vote is for both a censored as well as an uncensored version- with plenty of warnings on the latter. As disdainful and potentially obscene as this might very well be, sometimes people have to be taken to account for their actions, on a personal and corporate level. If corporations are indeed supporting something like this, blurred photos would have hardly the same impact as the true images, which may, in fact, might make quite an impression on the stock holders.

IMHO, for what it's worth.

Oh yes, it was a public event, on a public street, free and open to all, no entrance fee. And no, I didn't need to do anything to get people to "perform" for the cameras. They were performing plenty enthusiastically of their own volition. And oh yes, lotsa cameras floating around. But as with Folsom last year, I suspect that none of those other photos will see the light of day for some reason.

Now, a more serious answer.

This event came to your camera uncensored, and it would only be right to present it that way. I remember the report from the Folsum Street fair, and it sickened me. However, I would not have known how truly filthy that scene was without your publication. I could have chosen to view the censored version, but for the sake of knowing, looked through the uncensored version. If you had censored yourself, I doubt I would have thought much of it.

Both versions.

Adventurer Steve Fossett 'may have faked his own death'

However, Lieutenant Colonel Cynthia Ryan of the US Civil Air Patrol has said Fossett, whose body or plane was never found, could still be alive.

She said: "I've been doing this search and rescue for 14 years. Fossett should have been found.

"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do."

Fossett's disappearance sparked the biggest search in American history, with the Civil Air Patrol's Black Hawks, fitted with infra-red technology, joined by over 30 private planes and internet experts scanning the Nevada desert looking for clues.

Lt Col Ryan believes Fossett may have faked his own death due to personal problems or fears about his business dealings.

That's a hard one to call zombie. For purely prurient interest, I want to see them, which tells me to advise putting them up.
OTOH, I don't know what effect this will have on your hosting. I know many ISPs are a little touchy on what they call adult oriented material, and I would hate to see you have to deal with a lot of problems over this.
In light of your interest to not self-censor, I lean to posting the photos. If they become more trouble than they are worth, you can likely pull them back down with an explanation, without too much fallout.

71 realwest  Sun, Jul 27, 2008 8:52:13pm

re: #32 zombie Well you know best, zombie - and you're probably right that the other photos won't see the light of day -except to friends and friends of friends and so forth.
I'm all for Gay Rights and I believe that Gay folks should have - at the least - civil unions, but to not publish them in their uncensored format would, I think, be sort of at least mitigating to a degree what actually did happen amongst a fringe element of the Gay Community and give THEM more ammunition to "communicate" with those at the Street Festival that this is not helping the cause of Gay Liberation one slight bit.

As for the various suggestions regarding Miller logos and so forth:

The whole point is that the Miller sponsorship was toned WAY down. In fact, you had to look closely to see their logo at all. They removed the big signs, they used plain no-logo beer cups, etc. I think last year's report had an effect -- the effect of making their sponsorship less obvious, since I had many photos of men holding Miller Beer cups while being on the receiving end of...well, you get the idea. I'm sure the Public Relations department recommended that the logo be removed wherever possible. BUT, they seem to still have the beer concession, as far as I could tell. So they didn't disconnect themselves completely.

Well you know best, zombie - and you're probably right that the other photos won't see the light of day -except to friends and friends of friends and so forth.

Interesting thesis! That's actually part of my dilemma too, which I mused on at length in the introduction to the Folsom report: I have no problem with gay rights, gay marriage, etc., and for all anyone knows I may be gay myself. But I realize this report may give ammunition to the gay-haters. Problematic.

But I still feel I should "calls it as I sees it," which seems to be the prevailing vote total here as well!

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but when were those six planes you found reported missing?

The oldest was '64.

If Fossett's plane burned it would be virtually impossible to see from the air.

The strut-braced wings of the Decathlon are, like the fuselage and tail surfaces, fabric covered, utilizing aluminum ribs. The wings of Champion and Bellanca Decathlons were built with wooden spars.

It would be a few aluminum tubes with would look like branches and an engine block would look like a rock, you'd have to be virtually standing on it to tell what it had been.

re: #1 zombie

Or...?

Option a

Funny thing. There are sometimes - sometimes - drivers who like to intimidate people on scooters by tailgating them. I've had this happen to me several times and have seen it with other scoot drivers on occasion. There's some stigma with scooter drivers, I guess. You'd never see someone intentially pulling up to a Harley rider, or any other motorcycle for that matter. But I see it with scooter drivers.

Those are the times I'd like to unholster a pistol and say, "I said, back off!"

OK Zombie here is a possible lead. Miller Beer is distributed in San Fransisco by

Feb 9, 2005 - Golden Brands Beverage Distributors, a San Francisco Coors/Miller distributor has been sold to DBI Beverage Distributors of Nashville, Tennessee.

and then there is this out there..

DBI Beverage is owned by David Ingram, Chairman and President of Ingram Entertainment Inc., a national distributor of home entertainment products including DVDs, prerecorded videocassettes, and video games.

and this..

Twenty years ago, distributors were everywhere, the link between retail and publishing. Their power was immense. But in the age of direct distribution, they’ve been vastly reduced in numbers, and they don’t hold nearly as much sway. Only the most efficient survive, and some of them may not be here forever.

Ingram Entertainment is one of the country’s largest wholesalers of console games, supplying around 3,000 outlets a week. Bob Geistman, senior vice president interactive media and business development, says distributors can only make profits if they take care of the details.

"Our business is growing and our profits are growing but every day we have to struggle to figure out how to make money. Some of my competitors, I would say, are about to go bust."

So maybe the SF Miller Beer distributor has helped keep the mothership (with a failed business case) back home in TN afloat by selling pron videos promoted in those displays of public affection you have chronicled. A theory anyway. Why would Miller Beer want any part of that crap? They don't. I'm guessing its the Distributor.

One comment I read on open carry.

Open carry protects only the carrier, bad guys will leave that person alone.
Concealed carry protects everyone, bad guys don't know who to leave alone.

In WA State 1 in 25 has a CPL (Concealed Pistol License). The bad guys do think about it.

This may not help, since I share none of the fallout, but I recommend your first option (blurred/unblurred versions).

My reasoning is similar to previous posts.

You are merely reporting, with many photographs, a public event in San Francisco. If anyone finds the material objectionable, and it sounds like many will, this isn’t your fault.

If any one is offended, then perhaps a question or two to the SF Mayor’s Office and to the SF Chronicle and other news services is in order; is this normal for SF? If "Yes", then will this event be reported? "No"? Then why was this event allowed to take place? Who was arrested?

They have redundant hydraulics systems and can take a lot of punishment. The reason the engines are so high on the fuselage is to prevent them from eating all the brass from the MAU. (gun)

So this is the same Joel Rosenberg from the Guardians of the Flame?

I've always wondered that. Now I guess I'm going to have to read his "real world" style fiction.

Guardians of the Flame was very popular during my high school years. I like how his writing matured throughout the series. High Fantasy and Gunpowder, a can't miss proposition.

Check out Mandy's link in #204. I love the pics, but didn't think the B2 was capable of supersonic.

Most or all of those are from a slide show that was posted somewhere the other day, that I just happened to click through, and the caption on one specifically said that condensation pattern did NOT happen only at the sound barrier, note that B2 is not breaking through on at least one, it's just a foggy pattern over the wing.

re: #269 van helsing

The A-10 is just beautiful ugly. Truly 'Peace through superior firepower'.

I've always loved that plane. I nearly let an Army recruiter talk me into signing up - because he said I could get behind the stick.

Then a cousin (pilot, Air Force) called me to inform me that it was an Air Force plane, and they don't usually let Army soldiers fly them. I didn't bother going to the recruiting station after that. Probably better for America. I'm sure I would have made a crappy soldier.

The US Army rights a wrong.

Honored by his country at last, man accused of WWII lynching dies in peace

When the moment Samuel Snow waited most of his life for finally came, he didn't speak. He just took the plaque affirming his honorable discharge – an honor that had been stolen from him more than six decades ago – held it against his chest in a Seattle hospital bed, and smiled.

That moment Saturday, family said, made his life complete.

A few hours later, Snow died at age 83.

"My father went home," son Ray Snow said, "to present his God his discharge papers from this life."

In 1944, Snow left Seattle as a 19-year-old in handcuffs, convicted of rioting on a night that led to an Italian POW's death. He and the other 27 convicted black soldiers knew they were innocent. During a Saturday ceremony at Discovery Park, where the slaying occurred at an Army fort 64 years earlier, a top military official formally acknowledged the men's innocence and offered words most of those convicted never lived to hear.

"We're sorry."

Ok time for personal experience here. Had an F-4 and a A-10 crash while I was in the sandbox. The A-10 had several hundred holes in it anywhere from an inch in diameter to a few about 6 inches in diameter. Slid in and the largest damage other than the holes, was the fact they managed to bend the gun.

F-4 ran out of fuel. Dropped straight down out of the sky. Landing gear went in three different directions. No slide marks on the ground. (Proof that if you put a big enough engine on a brick it will fly. But it won't land without power.)

The bathtub with the gun fared much better.

Truly ROFLMAO! I had the same conversation with my wife! I keep my pistols in an easy open safe (grandkids) but the broadsword is right there on the bedroom wall.

That is too funny.

On a serious note, it's not so much the weapon as the will to use it. If someone is in my house without permission, they get to die. No question, no talking, no chances.

Witty repartee is good for books, not for survival.

Just make sure of the laws where you are. Some place require retreat. If you can get out of the house you must leave. Stupid laws but that's what they are.

Run it with the blurred pics. Set the link to a page with a warning about content and a disclaimer link to the report. Be blunt with the warning so the viewer will be well cautioned about continuing on to the report.

I am late to this thread so you may have already made your choice.

Or...?

I would say, blur the worst photos, but link to the unblurred versions, or perhaps make two versions of the page - offer people a choice in a way that doesn't hurt your bandwidth or report preparation time too badly.

Yeah, one story I heard was from a fellow cadet that did an SLC up in Cold Lake Alberta. He said that he saw a pilot in a high pressure G-suit enter a restricted hangar. This was back in the early 80's when the Canadian Air Force had no such aircraft that required the equipment. (just a rumour).

One of my CFI's when I was taking glider training flew the CF-100. Some of the stories he told us about that had us rolling on the floor.

Hey Killian!
"It's not like we didn't have our eyes open. We found six other planes while we were looking for him. We're pretty good at what we do." Uh, were y'all looking for those six planes contemporaneously or did they just get found?

There was an excellent article on the search efforts in Smithsonian's Air & Space magazine earlier in the spring. The area where he is thought to have gone down has lots of unpleasant terrain and strong variable winds coming over the mountains from California. My understanding is that it's a treacherous place to fly anything lighter than a 747, and more than a few people with airplanes have bought the farm (or farms) in that part of Nevada. It sounded a bit like Alaska, where they often go looking for one missing plane and find two or three others.

When I ask Obama supporters why they support him I get the standard “He will bring change to America.” So that leads into “what change?” Will I no longer be able to climb into my F250 diesel and drive to any damn spot in America I chose? Will I no longer be able to work at a job where I chose, the only requirement being the employer accepts me?” Ask those questions and you will get the same equal black stare as you do when you ask “What has Obama accomplished in his life that is so unusal in a nation like ours?” Then you get the standard “He was the first minority to be president of the Harvard Law Review” (actually, no he wasn’t); “He is a United States senator” (so what, there are 100 of them); “He is a uniter” (what the hell has he ever united?).

I like to think of myself as a student of history. An American history book like 1776 will catch my eye long before any John Grisham book. And while I find the History Channel to be biased, it seems to be one of the few stations I ever tune into.

There are also some things I find creepy, one you briefly touch on; the big “O”. While other candidates of the past have signs being waved by adoring fans with their name and the American flag, flags behind them, flags in front of them, flags all around them, not so with the Obama man. We see a sea of the big “O”.

I was watching a segment on the rise of Hitler (you knew it was coming) the other night when I could not sleep. It showed the parades in Berlin, with Hitler standing at a podium watching as adoring Germans pledged their loyality and he promised the trains would run on time. But there was something missing that I could not exactly put my finger on. Then it hit me; there were no German flags. This man, who was preaching German nationalism, promising to restore the greatness of Germany, telling the German people they would once again be the leaders of the world and German power and might would be first in the world, did not have any German flags behind him. Instead, he had his version of the big “O”.

Now there will be the Obamabot who says I am being paranoid to which I reply, I am not paranoid, I am observant. I understand that everything involved in a campaign DOES have meaning. Campaigns are PR events. And logos are designed to have impact. See the logo, think of the company (or person) that logo is attached to. No words are necessary. When you see the famous CokaCola logo, do you think Chevrolet, or America, or even soft drink? No, you think one thing, CokaCola. Ad men know this. They know the more you have the logo out there, the more of that product they will sell. That is why it is everywhere. And a million bumper stickers with a logo is worth more than a one minute ad slot on national TV during the Super Bowl.

The big “O”. That, to me, is the creepiest.

He is so right, Obama seems to want to usher in a golden age of Facism in America.

And the left are more than happy to comply.

Went out for some errands this afternoon and was gone for a couple hours.

Sometimes, My garage door opener fails on the close cycle because it retrieves too far; shuts off when you hit the button to close. I drove away as I hit the button and didn't look back.

When I returned, I hit the button at the end of the alley, and noticed that the door was just closing as I pulled up. The door had been open the entire time I was gone. Sure enough, my socket set was gone.

Only the joke's on the thief. It was the crappiest socket set one could ever own. I bought it on clearance a couple years ago and lamented its purchase ever since. Sure, it had a great screwdriver set and a bunch of torx-head bits, but it also had a bunch of crap I'll never need, and the sockets were mixed for their usefulness. Aside from the 17mm I need to change the oil on my scoot, there were maybe only three others that were usefull for anything else.

Shovels, hoes, rakes, pruners, weeders, a lawnmower and a snowblower; a battery charger and a cb radio; a pressurized sprayer, 50' of garden hose, a set of vise grips and all sorts of nails, bolts, screws and nuts, and this dumbass thief takes the cheapest and least useful thing I've purchased since I bought my house. I was almost tempted to report it, but the dumbass paid me a favor.

GWoT - Afghanistan

Roggio

The Taliban launched their assault on the Spera district center at 2 AM local time, the International Security Assistance Force reported in a press release. The attacking force, estimated at 100 Taliban fighters, attacked using small arms and machineguns.

The Afghan National Police manning the outpost held off the attack and radioed US forces for backup. The US responded by sending ground forces and supporting fire from artillery as well as helicopter and aircraft.

US and Afghan forces then surrounded the Taliban force and pounded the position with small-arms fire, artillery, and airstrikes.

The Taliban force was routed. "The number of insurgents killed is in double-digit figures," the International Security Assistance Force reported. Arsala Jamal, the governor of Khost, said between 50 and 70 Taliban fighters were killed. "A small number" of police officers were reported killed. No US troops were reported killed or wounded during the engagement.

The Spera district center is just nine miles from the Pakistani border.

I don't even remember QUIT being at Folsom last year.

I googled "Dore Event" and got the Folsom street fair website showing a poster with: Miller Brewing and DBI Beverage present Up Your Alley Kick Off

I'm sure the organizers think they're being very clever with the new name.

re: #433 RTLM

My eldest child (first tour in Iraq finished) has said that they will likely be heading to A-stan when they head out again.

I was doing an informal survey - who knows where the 'Stans are and who would miss them if they got vaporized?

Oh hell. Never mind. I'm just being pissy. No nuking or genocide suggested.

Zombie — glad you're still here...
I vote publish! With the blur-thingy and a whole lot of warnings!

Headline:
Miller Beer sponsors/supports public displays of lewd depravity!

Also be very thorough in your tags, re: Miller Beer. Publish their contact addresses and phone and fax numbers.

re: #1 zombie

Use the little black squares or rectangles to block out the naughty bits.
re: #33 jcm

Put together a nice portfolio, 8x10 glossies, depravity in the foreground Miller in the background. Fedex it to the CEO.

Better then that FedEx it to the next shareholders meeting.
