Obama's Berlin Bounce: A Short Hop

Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 10:43:10 am PDT

Barack Obama’s polling “bounce” from his overseas extravaganza was very short-lived.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that Barack Obama’s Berlin bounce is gone. Obama now attracts 44% of the vote while John McCain earns 42%. When “leaners” are included, it’s Obama 47% and McCain 46%. Compared to a week ago, Obama has gained a single percentage point (see recent daily results).

Dead cat bounce. So much for that Gallup poll.

Still, I'd be wary of polls in this election cycle, regardless of the results they claim. Pollsters are constantly massaging the numbers with sample size, likely voters v. registered voters, etc., and the internals shed light on the practice to some degree, but if the polled individuals aren't honestly reporting their preferences (Bradley effect), etc., then there's no way to know what is going on.

It only becomes interesting when a proper swing of at least 15 points for one of them happens.

Can't find a link, but Brit Hume's show last night had two polls -- registered voters and likely voters. The Messiah leads by, I think, 6 points among registered voters, but McCain leads among likely voters by 4 points (which is also the margin of error). Likely voters are the only ones that matter.

Four apartments - 2 were combined when he originally purchased; bought a third and then fourth at later dates. It's the fourth apartment that is the one that really should get the serious attention since he was using it as an office in violation of the NYS rent stabilization laws.

The alteration, first pointed out by political blogger Charles Johnson, seemed intended to conceal the fact that one of the missiles, which the Iranians claim could reach Israel, either did not fire or exploded on the ground.

ASTONISHING!

O'S TOUR DE FARCE

snip:

In private, though, Iraqi officials admit that Obama's analysis is "way off the mark." Without the surge, the Sunni tribes wouldn't have switched sides to help flush out al Qaeda. And the strong US military presence enabled the new Iraqi army to defeat Iran-backed Shiite militias in Basra and Baghdad.

Nevertheless, in public at least, no Iraqi politician wants to appear more appreciative of American sacrifices than the man who may become the next US president.

Iraqis were most surprised by Obama's apparent readiness to throw away all the gains made in Iraq simply to prove that he'd been right in opposing the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein. "He gave us the impression that the last thing he wanted was for Iraq to look anything like a success for the United States," a senior Iraqi official told me. "As far as he is concerned, this is Bush's war and must end in lack of success, if not actual defeat."

I think most Americans don't like the Europeans telling us what to do.
Thus, Obama goes there, to adoring crowds, and more Americans decide he shouldn't be president. Also, he goes there instead of campaigning here, in some ways is a rejection of what we want and need.

So the trip might have been Obama jumping the shark.

Democratic Party maybe presumes too much - about women

I am reminded of a particularly chilling passage in Vladimir Nabokov's novel "Lolita." Humbert Humbert, after raping the 12-year-old, is pondering why she has come back to his bed. "You see," Humbert tells the reader, "she had absolutely nowhere else to go."

That's just how I feel. And they want my enthusiastic support? The Democratic Party can fend for itself.

Let the Dems be as racist or sexist as they want. I am colorblind and genderblind when it comes to the value of a human being to represent my views in government.

That aside, I loved what Keyes had to say in 2000 and supported him over Bush until he dropped out.

Allan Keyes is courageous & right in so many ways, but unfortunately doesn't play well with others. Has been AWOL or voluntarily out of the public eye too long.

Keyes should have stuck around & made himself a visible commentator or something, to remain viable for office of some sort.

Anyone who was William Kristol's room-mate and an effective Reagan administration official, should have plenty of work today if he wants it.

Mine were next door talking about the "solution" to poverty is to raise the minimum wage. I usually can keep quiet but I actually gasped and banged my head on the desk over that one.

They have no concept of economics. What not just declare that 10 dollars = 1 dollar, and now, everyone's salary in the whole country is multiplied by 10. Woohoo! Then we'll all be rich, right?

What's that you say, all the prices will multiply by ten and we'll be exactly where we started? (Except for all that liquid capital savings that just was decimated in value, of course.)

If you raise the minimum wage to $10, that will only make it necessary for employers to lay-off 10% or 20% of low wage employees. That's supposed to help poor people?

His solution was to raise taxes on "corporations" (which are always big, greedy, evil, and have more money than they deserve to have, I suppose) and pass those funds to small businesses.

I have a small business. We are a corporation. And I pay more taxes and more different kinds of taxes that I had ever heard of three years ago. (I swear sometimes they are just making some of them up new every month.)

Aren't many of these polls taken in major cities where liberals traditionally hold sway?

If that's the case, Obama has little chance if he can't dominate by a big margin in those places. Plus I think many people who say they'll vote for Obama are only saying it so they seem enlightened and open minded to the pollster, but once they are safely in the voting booth they'll vote McCain. At least I hope that's the case.

I certainly agree African Americans are not monolithic. But there are plenty of people willing to go out and smash stuff if they think they can get away with it. After the Rodney King riots in LA, there were copy-cat riots in several US cities and even in Toronto, for Pete's sake. And not all the rioters will be black. These will be "disaffected youts" venting their "frustration & despair", (while indulging their desire for consumer electronics and new sneakers), urged on by irresponsible community leaders and fanned by the media coverage.

The media & the Obama campaign have built up the sense of inevitability of his victory so thoroughly, they will feel robbed, betrayed and entirely justified to riot.

If you raise the minimum wage to $10, that will only make it necessary for employers to lay-off 10% or 20% of low wage employees. That's supposed to help poor people?

Either that or everyone would be forced to raise the price of their goods and services, and then that $10 wouldn't go any further than what they are getting now.

McCain ought to swallow his pride & choose his runner up, Romney, who's a heckuva fighter FOR McCain, and smart to boot, plus sunny dispositioned, not sourpuss.

Evangelicals warn against McCain-Romney ticket

Prominent evangelical leaders are warning Sen. John McCain against picking former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as his running mate, saying their troops will abandon the Republican ticket on Election Day if that happens.

They say Mr. Romney lacks trust on issues such as outlawing abortion and opposing same-sex marriage and because he is a Mormon. Opposition is particularly powerful among those who supported former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the Republican presidential primaries earlier this year.
