There was some guy up on charges and there was a press conference where he was represented by a Texan in a kilt. When asked "whats with the kilt" he responded without batting an eye, deadpan serious, "Its to do with the genetalia, a kilt is more comfortable when size is involved" (something to that effect)

For those of you Utah lizards about to drive home. Watch out for northbound on the I-15 if you're going to the Bountiful area. Cranes are removing an "oversized load crash" and it'll be a few HOURS before extra lanes are open. Check it out at Utah Commuter Link. The north Redwood camera next to the W in redwood.
Here's the e-mail I got from UDOT.

ALL TRAFFIC ENTERING DAVIS COUNTY FROM SALT LAKE COUNTY WILL EXPECT TO BE DELAYED A COUPLE HOURS.

NB I-15 in Davis County/North Salt Lake City at Center Street is restricted to one lane (of four) due to an oversize load crashing. Cranes are being used to lift the load and clear

It will be a couple hours to open additional lanes. Expect major delays. US 89 and Redwood Road are alternates, but those are also severely congested.

NB traffic on I-215 W is exiting the freeway at the Redwood Exit.

Good luck!

Update: Israeli paper now says Obama camp did not approve prayer for publication

Presumably yesterday’s spin that Obama had put them up to it was someone’s panicky attempt to defuse the scandal, which only ended up drawing more heat. Exit question recycled from my last post about this: Ma’ariv initially claimed the note was approved by Team Barry even before he placed it in the wall. If so, did he give them an exclusive on it? Because no other Israeli paper ran it. And if it was an exclusive, why wasn’t that noted prominently in Ma’ariv’s original story?

I just read the Wiki on them:

Some of the actors, including Werner Klemperer (Klink), John Banner (Schultz), Robert Clary (LeBeau), and Leon Askin (Burkhalter), were Jews who had fled the Nazis during World War II. Clary says in the recorded commentary on the DVD version of episode “Art for Hogan’s Sake” that he spent three years in a concentration camp, that his parents and other family members were killed there, and that he has an identity tattoo from the camp on his arm. Likewise John Banner was in a (pre-war) concentration camp and his family was exterminated during the war. Leon Askin was also in a pre-war French internment camp and his parents were killed at Treblinka. Howard Caine (Hochstetter) was also Jewish (his birth name was Cohen), and Jewish actors Harold Gould and Harold J. Stone played German generals.

As a teenager, Werner Klemperer (Klink) (son of the great conductor Otto Klemperer) fled Hitler’s Germany with his family in 1933. During the show’s production, he insisted that Hogan always win over his Nazi captors. He defended his playing a Nazi by claiming, “I am an actor. If I can play Richard III, I can play a Nazi.” Banner attempted to sum up the paradox of his role by saying, “Who can play Nazis better than us Jews?” Ironically, although Klemperer, Banner, and Askin play typecast World War II German types, all had actually served in the US Armed Forces during World War II—Banner [1] and Askin in the US Army Air Corps and Klemperer in a US Army Entertainment Unit.

Btw, I'm fine if the Germans want to be like us. I think we're pretty groovy heh, but it's certainly better than other choices they may have.

Anyhow he was dancing and a German guy who I worked with at the time said something like "What a crazy -nword-". I really lit into him. I asked him if he'd like me to translate for him and what he thought the reaction would be. In a way I was surprised at what he said but in a way I wasnt. HOwever it was worth watching him squirm and hum and haw. Iwish I had gotten my friend and his friends in on it. It would have been worth some reparatory beers . hehehe

That Obama is popular among 18-30 year-olds is proof positive of the utter failure of US public schools and their union-led teachers.

There are about 90 days remaining to expose this tool for what he is. A phenomenal nobody.

At the risk of being a real wet blanket, I have to say that I am damned tired of CGI and comic-book movies.

I would like to see some films which actually dealt reasonably honestly with history; that dealt reasonably honestly with traditional Western myths/stories (can somebody do a modern version of Robin Hood, say, which is not rotten with revisionism, or a pirate film which dealt with Blackbeard and Captain Kidd instead of supernatural nonsense?); that celebrated an actual traditional family with ordinary angsts instead of postmodern writhing (Andy Hardy meets the new century); that showed someone grappling with the genuine anxieties of a real job without taking a complete leap into fantasy.

In short, it would be nice if movies actually related to real people instead of being escapes into magic, comic books, infantilism, or hate-America polemicizing.

I ain't holdin' my breath.

If that's what I wanted to see, then I would fly out to your house and watch you. 24 hours a day.

Good thing. I did read that Ridley Scott's revisionist version of Robin Hood was put on the back burner. Hope it stays there. That crusader thing he directed a couple of years ago was simply awful.

Too bad. ABC has ALL episodes online, HD and regular. Show comes back on in Feb. 2009 for 16 episodes and then 16 more in 2010 to end it. The writers strike this past year screwed them up a bit.

Quick update.

1) Six 815 victims got off the island. Jack, Kate, Sun-Hwa, Hurley, Sayid and Claires baby Aaron

2) Desmond got off, Penny found him. Ben is off Island.

3) Locke stayed as new leader, got off Island, died (but not for good) dead is relitive in this show.

4) Island has vanished, moved in time.

Just uploaded a new zombietime mini-report:

McCain in San Francisco: Fundraiser Protest
San Francisco, July 28, 2008

(Because this was timely, I moved it ahead of the upcoming Miller Beer/sextravaganza report in the zombietime queue [which won't be done for at least two more days].)

Nothing really remarkable happened, but (as usual) I got some memorable and funny pictures, and recorded some bizarre and intriguing vignettes.

I particularly like this amazingly allegorical photo of MoveOn's "Bush Legacy" bus behind an actual illustration of the Bush legacy: an old-fashioned Muslim women in traditional garb sadly turning away as if defeated, while a young westernized woman walks in to take her place. A perfect illustration of how Bush's real legacy is the beginning of the westernization of the Islamic world!

Our materials and engineering are much better now. Surviving wind, rain, (earthquake,) hail, and all are important, of course. Wish we were moving a lot faster to build a bunch of trough or tower sites. Certainly not the whole solution, but could make a big contribution to power consumption in the southwest - note that it would be most efficient exactly when the most power is needed for air-conditioning!

I don't mind the occasional fantasy film, by any means--I'm just sick to death of a steady diet of it, along with infantilism, fart jokes and CGI explosions.

Well LOTR stuck to the books in great detail and took only few artistic liberties, which IMO didn't need to, but didn't harm the story. And it's a great story anyway.

I think comedy has been dumbed down in general, along with everything else.

On the other hand, I do watch Southpark, Family Guy etc... so I guess I'm a drone.

re: #118 buzzsawmonkey

What is popularly regarded as the Golden Age of Hollywood produced films exactly like those I described. Yes, the films starring Bing Crosby as a priest, or Mickey Rooney playing Andy Hardy, or even the Dead End Kids, were fantasy--but they were fantasies with one foot in the lives of real people.

Filmmakers of that era--writers and directors and actors--were able to do such things because they had actually held jobs in the world before going to work in the dream factory. Clark Gable had been an oilfield roustabout; Gary Cooper had been an actual cowboy for a while, as well as trying his hand, unsuccessfully, at being a newspaper cartoonist. Ben Hecht had been a reporter (watch the first filming of The Front Page for a wonderfully cynical inside glimpse into the world of the media); Wyler, Ford, Wilder, etc., had all knocked around a bit before they landed in Hollywood to become Famous Directors.

Today films are made by snotnoses out of film school, just as reporters today derive their journalistic expertise from journalism schools. The quality of films, like the quality of reportage, has suffered accordingly. Films today are made by people who have been raised in a bell jar; who have no sense of life, of history, of literature, or anything else. If a bizarre disease were to erase all comic books and all vintage TV shows from the earth overnight, tumbleweeds would be blowing through the gulches of Hollywood.

It's pathetic.

I could never get into the movies of the 40's-50's, mostly because the direction was so different then as compared to now. I think, however, in about another ten years I'll reach a point where I want to watch those old movies.

I agree that many films today are centered on body humor, and not in a good way--not like Danny Kaye, who could make you laugh just by looking at his nose a certain way. Unfortunately the material that seems easiest and cheapest to adapt to screen is based in the comic book/graphic novel genre.

There are a lot of great books from the past fifty years that have never been considered for movie material that should be. But it requires someone to spend the time to come up with the screenplay. That is often a lot of hard work.

I have been impressed with the adaptations of Jane Austen's work, especially the whimsical Emma.

Thanks, Killgore. Yes, I've been following Miguel's progress (and praying for him, of course). He and I need to get together; apparently his vision's still clear, and I can still type at regular speed. I'm told my vision will clear up, but slowly, so I have to be patient.

re: #118 buzzsawmonkey

You are so damn right, it makes me cry! I really miss the good old days!

I think I've green-♥'d more of your comments than anyone else's!

re: #153 vxbush

Hollywood is all about the money now. If you can't guarantee a good return, then no one is interested in financing. That's why so many of the good stories seem to come out of the independent market.

That series was derivative of LOTR. One author I have given up on because each series seems to be a rehash of the previous ones.

No more than the Chronicles of Narnia would be considered derivative. And the "rehash" (The Mallorean) you complain about was a central plot point across the whole series; time itself was "stuck" and kept repeating until fixed.

I think that the movie version of Mamma Mia! would've benefitted from more CGI explosions. In fact, if it'd been up to me, I would've substantially rewritten the plot so that Meryl Streep's character turns out to be a cyborg who goes on a killing spree in the final half hour.

(Plus, I would've added a musical number based around "When I Kissed the Teacher" from ABBA's Arrival album -- it's kinda bubblegum, but still a classic.)

The chess imagery from the Belgariad is used to illustrate the struggle of free will vs. predestination that runs as a subtext throughout the entire single story told in The Belgariad, The Mallorean, Belgarath the Sorcerer, and Polgara the Sorceress; 12 books to tell a single story across a huge swath of time. You can thank Eddings' editor at Del Rey for the imagery.

There were a couple of low- cost photovoltaic start-ups recently that each claim $1/watt panels- which makes them economically feasible. Great thing about photovoltaics is that their maximum output is precisely when the grid needs it most during peak demand.

Obama: Odds of winning are very good

This goes to yet another thing that bugs me about Obama: he talks publicly way too much about his pure impressions of how he's doing poll-wise, at the expense of elaborating on real-world implications and policy consequences of all his happy-talk. He seems just a tad too impressed by and fixated upon where he leads in the polls, how he thinks he'll do in certain states, etc etc etc.

He thinks we need to know his substance-less observations about the yield he's getting from this campaign tactic or that, but to me it's extraordinarily irritating -- all that stuff is mere window dressing to what we all really need to know.

We don't really need to hear all his BS about his hopes for X percentage of the vote of demographic Y. We need to hear details about how he thinks he will truly hack it on a day-to-day basis when he sits in the executive chair of the world's most important job.

I know his scheming brain is preoccupied inordinately much about how this catch-phrase or that slogan will "play" with constituency Z. But to me it shows that he's just feeding us all a bunch of rhetorical junk-food merely for its strategic polling effect, rather than to demonstrate any depth of understanding of the topics he launches into.

Yep! (I haven't seen that one yet. Is it good?)

Jackson's King Kong suffered from some interminably long CGI "thrill ride / videogame" sequences in which the human characters have to dodge giant prehistoric creatures of one kind or another.

On the other hand, the relationship between the Blonde Beauty and King Kong is really well developed by Jackson, and in my opinion his plucky heroine (played by Naomi Watts) improves on both the Fay Wray and Jessica Lange versions. There's a funny, charming scene where Watts -- who's still not 100% sure if Kong intends to eat her or not -- basically takes a gamble that the ape is more a creature of intelligence and curiosity than of bloodthirstiness. Which, of course, turns out to be the correct assumption.

So, what to do. I have an idea. Can anyone out there score me some consecrated communion wafers? There's no way I can personally get them — my local churches have stakes prepared for me, I'm sure — but if any of you would be willing to do what it takes to get me some, or even one, and mail it to me, I'll show you sacrilege, gladly, and with much fanfare. I won't be tempted to hold it hostage (no, not even if I have a choice between returning the Eucharist and watching Bill Donohue kick the pope in the balls, which would apparently be a more humane act than desecrating a goddamned cracker), but will instead treat it with profound disrespect and heinous cracker abuse, all photographed and presented here on the web. re: #242 reine.de.tout

Interesting. I skimmed the comments and didn't see anyone saying that they'd send them in. The Information from yesterday was pretty specific so it might be true but I'm also think that these cases lead to exaggeration. The whole inspiration from the Eucharist desecration in the middle ages were made up stories to demonize the Jews. The Danish cartoon riots were instigated my the imams traveling around with added cartoons to inflame the masses. I'm suspicious of the report but it is plausible.

re: #208 The Other Les

I can see it now, school children across Americastan reciting, "Thank you great Obama for my happy childhood."

To go along with those comrade posters his followers are so fond of.

Have you guys tried the new search engine? cuil.com?

I did a search on LGF. A lot of links to similar sites came up which is much different than Google. (Not sure what the bloodied woman is about....)

They do list the site as "Alternative Journalism". I think that's a pretty good moniker, no?

I tried it. I put my name in and nothing came up if I use Google and I put my name in there are many links.

I shall bring up a point that a long time poster here, that has since been banned, who stated that nothing would be done about our ability to be self-sufficent about our dependance on foreign oil until gas reached $4.00 a gallon. His prediction has been proven true but his banning has also been proven correct. It seems that his prediction may well become the "bat" the right beats the left with!

According to this link, Jon Voight will never work in Hollywood again.

"And he's obviously entitled to say and write whatever he wants. But it's only natural that industry-based Obama supporters will henceforth regard him askance. Honestly? If I were a producer and I had to make a casting decision about hiring Voight or some older actor who hadn't pissed me off with an idiotic Washington Times op-ed piece, I might very well say to myself, "Voight? Let him eat cake." "

Voight would have been better off promoting Stalinism.

But when country music fans said they no longer wanted anything to do with the Dixie Chicks, that was Eveeeel Censorship!

A chill wind blowing?

Anyone watching Jurassic Fight Club? The History Channel just put up a black screen warning that we are about to see a violent depiction of a fight. How dramatic! LOL

There's a movement afoot to pay reparations to al Qaeda.

Finally, in the years ahead our country must still come to grips with our national acquiescence to the politics of fear, which has led to the detention and abuse of hundreds of individuals. Among the necessary steps will be restoration of freedom to innocent detainees, accompanied by public apology and some monetary restitution for the years they lost to incarceration.

Check out the "Hothouse" album. A little more jazzy and guest players including Jerry Garcia.
re: #199 Tigger2005

Hornsby's version of "Jacob's Ladder" is good too...more bluesy and less rock than the Huey Lewis & the News version.
