Former ABC Reporter to Bin Laden: 'You Are Like Teddy Roosevelt'

Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 9:08:05 am PDT

Former ABC correspondent John Miller is testifying in the case of Osama bin Laden’s driver, Salim Hamdan, and his account of his interview with bin Laden in 1998 is a look at the eagerness of mainstream media to help the enemies of the US: Bin Laden sought U.S. fame in TV interview.

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) - Osama bin Laden wanted to introduce himself to America with an ABC television interview months before al Qaeda bombed two U.S. embassies in Africa, the interviewer testified on Tuesday.

Former ABC correspondent John Miller, testifying at the first Guantanamo war crimes trial, also recalled comparing bin Laden with U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt as he made small talk during filming of the May 28, 1998, interview at an Afghanistan mountain hideout.

It was a rare opportunity for an American journalist, and Miller detailed a movie-thriller route to get to bin Laden, complete with multiple plane flights in Pakistan, a nighttime border crossing into Afghanistan, and muzzle flashes from automatic weapons at an al Qaeda checkpoint.

“You are like the Middle East version of Teddy Roosevelt,” Miller, who is now the chief FBI spokesman, told bin Laden in a selection of the interview tape screened for the trial of bin Laden’s driver, Salim Hamdan. ...

Miller said the Roosevelt remark was meant to test bin Laden’s historical awareness and “keep the conversation going” as his cameraman filmed secondary footage. He said he compared the two as sons of wealthy families who fought on front lines — Roosevelt gained fame as a U.S. Army Cavalry colonel in Cuba during the 1898 Spanish-American war.

“On one level, it’s an absurd comparison,” Miller said. However, he said, “sometimes when you ask a provocative question you elicit an interesting response.”

Bin Laden didn’t take that bait, Miller said, but he achieved his goal in granting the interview. “They wanted to introduce Osama bin Laden to America,” Miller said. “It did that.”

Legitimate tactic.

You really think so? I can't say I'm convinced. Perhaps if he were a law enforcement officer himself, I might buy it. But I don't see a reporter using such a tactic without explaining it after the answer is given. It's too easy for him to say now that he was just using it to get a response out of bin Laden.

Absurd is right.

But, putting aside the comparison, the fact is that Miller is testifying because he did get access to bin Laden and is expected to put Hamdan clearly in bin Laden's inner circle.

Let's not forget why Miller is testifying about all this - it's so that Hamdan never sees the light of day.

Obama's Flip Du Jour

On Blackwater then:

“I don’t believe that they should be able to run amok,” he told The Nation in March, “and put our own troops in danger, get paid three or four times or ten times what our soldiers are getting paid. I am the one who has been opposed to those operators.” Obama even suggested in an interview just three weeks ago with Defense News that Blackwater and other private security firms are “eroding the core of our military’s relationship to the nation and how accountability is structured.”

On Blackwater now (after using them as his security detail on his world tour:

U.S. News & World Report, Paul Bedard has Obama satisfied enough with the company’s expertise to say that “Blackwater is getting a bad rap.”

Agreed but if the reporter is honest in stating the reason he is doing the interview and honestly states what he sees as the reason the other party has granted the interview where is he being unethical? Miller interviewed criminals for a living. If he does it correctly the public gets to see what they are and the propaganda is punctured not protected. I have a copy of Mein Kampf that Random House published in America during WW-II, while paper was rationed. Getting out the message of what we were fighting was a noble act.

Miller was probably figuring that stroking bin Laden's ego would provide the same kind of exposition that Miller got out of mobsters back in NY when he was on the mob-news beat.

It was a legitimate question, and yet it remains absurd. The problem as I see it is that no one has managed to track him down since then - no journalist access. Nothing.

That, when combined with the absence of new video (not photos of him accompanying a video with garbled audio), is highly suggestive that he's at room temperature (well, room temperature of several thousand degrees seeing how he's roasting in Hell).

re: #65 Leonidas Hoplite

Osama may well have known how Teddy Roosevelt was, but I'm not surprised he didn't appreciate the comparison. If the reporter had compared him to Saladin it would have worked better. Here's a transcript of the interview.

JM: What is the meaning of your call for Muslims to take arms against America in particular, and what is the message that you wish to send to the West in general?

OBL: The call to wage war against America was made because America has spear-headed the crusade against the Islamic nation, sending tens of thousands of its troops to the land of the two Holy Mosques over and above its meddling in its affairs and its politics, and its support of the oppressive, corrupt and tyrannical regime that is in control. These are the reasons behind the singling out of America as a target. And not exempt of responsibility are those Western regimes whose presence in the region offers support to the American troops there. We know at least one reason behind the symbolic participation of the Western forces and that is to support the Jewish and Zionist plans for expansion of what is called the Great Israel. Surely, their presence is not out of concern over their interests in the region. ... Their presence has no meaning save one and that is to offer support to the Jews in Palestine who are in need of their Christian brothers to achieve full control over the Arab Peninsula which they intend to make an important part of the so called Greater Israel.

re: #99 Ben Hur

Livni will definitely try. Barak is thinking he can probably get it. He's got the experience of having been PM before, and would likely strike a harder line against the terrorists than Livni, whose first instincts are to negotiate.

Barak, one would hope, wouldn't try another Camp David hail mary of throwing everything and the kitchen sink into a peace offer to the Palestinians. He'd been burned once, and you would hope that he wouldn't be stupid enough to try that again.

Bibi is a longer shot. I think he's the most well spoken of the possibilities, but his baggage will probably keep him out of it. He's the long shot.

I think Carl might have a different opinion - or provide other names that might creep into the conversation.

128 ctrlL  Wed, Jul 30, 2008 9:41:11am

I remember Miller from 'Nightline', if memory serves. If I recall correctly, he had been sniffing out terrorism for a few years even before 9/11. He did a few shows that were very informative and then left and showed up on the West Coast working as a terrorism consultant. He appeared to have correct motivations when I heard him reporting. Seemed like a real straight shooter who had good instincts.

Just my thoughts for you all to decipher. Things may not be what they seem to be, imho.

But I don't blame those two reporters -- I blame the media in general for failing to do their jobs. Miller and Bergen were better than most, I'd agree with that, because at least they were talking about it. But in the best of all possible worlds, the public would be informed about Al Qaeda's agenda without the need for direct airing of their propaganda, by reporters who flatter their way into the inner circle.

183 Kenneth  Wed, Jul 30, 2008 9:52:17am

From Miller's interview:

The American government is leading the country towards hell. ... We say to the Americans as people and to American mothers, if they cherish their lives and if they cherish their sons, they must elect an American patriotic government that caters to their interests not the interests of the Jews. If the present injustice continues with the wave of national consciousness, it will inevitably move the battle to American soil, just as Ramzi Yousef and others have done. This is my message to the American people. I urge them to find a serious administration that acts in their interest and does not attack people and violate their honor and pilfer their wealth. ...

It's clear enough Obama was calling for terrorism against America. But because the interviews includes all the MoveOn.org talking points, the liberal media, politicians & public figured, "no big deal".

It would be nice if those same reporters did some critical examination of Obama - like his brief and undistinguished career in the Senate, that he hasn't ever held a 9 to 5 job, or that his credit was so bad 8 years ago that he couldn't rent a car (yet he got a sweet mortgage deal on his house in Chicago).

I'd give him a pass on this one. He just changed his opinion after seeing real world results. Nothing wrong with that. Heck, we cheered McCain when he changed his opinion on off-shore drilling - after getting the facts.

Disclaimer: This opinion in no way changes my personal belief that Obama is an empty suit and absoultely the worst candidate the Democrats could offer to the US.

If he really changed his mind, why won't he admit he used them over there? I won't be suprised when he starts in against them again.

If it had been left up to the MSM we wouldn't have heard of any of the Clinton scandals, let alone the deep failure in policy that was the Clinton Administration's response to terrorism.

Absolutely spot-on. But as I said before, I don't want any attention defelected from the Clinton Administration who wasn't paying attention to this cowardly murderer.
And they sure should have paid attention to Miller's interview - he was a know, quality reporter (remember the days when that would hardly be noted?!) who had covered Gotti and the Mafia with tremendous guts - I mean really stuck it to them.
The Clintonistas could not possibly have not known who Miller was; the real question here, I think, is why didn't the Clinton Administration wake up and pay attention?

Generally I think that we need to draw a bright line between good journalists exposing the enemy for what they are and politicians giving the enemy the appearance of respect. Obama talking to Ahmedinajihad or Pelosi talking to Assad should be a trigger for relentless condemnation. A puff piece by some airhead that allows the dictator's wife to talk about parenting and kids today should be a cause for getting people fired. Real exposure to disinfecting sunlight should be encouraged. The Danny Pearl video should have been described and linked to by every serious media outlet as should the Mo-toons. Interesting fact from rasmussen this morning:

In the race for the White House, there are nearly twice as many uncommitted voters as there were four years ago in late July (see other recent demographic highlights). While much has been made of John McCain’s struggles with his party’s conservative base, 33% of the uncommitted voters are Democrats while only 19% are Republicans. Full crosstabs and a demographic profile of the uncommitted voters are available for Premium Members.

No wonder why the media is working so hard to promote Obama - they are trying to get the cold-feet dems to commit to Obama.

Yeah - excuses and reparations to all 'tragic' victims ...
Does it never occur to them that a) people in the past had another mindset for which one cannot legislate retroactively, and that b) oppression of peoples took place in other countries as well - I'm thinking of the serfs in Russia, who only got their 'freedom' at about the time of the American Civil War ... ah, sorree, they were white, weren't they ...

And that doesn't even begin to touch on the fate of the Jews in Russia, Poland, and really everyhere in Europe - but hey, they're Joooos ... so don't count.

The funny thing here (or not) is that they, woman do not have to take a driving test because there are no women testers and they cannot drive a car with a man they do not know.

The article I posted in response to you talks about how Obama secured a super jumbo loan at a 5.625 fixed rate for 30 years with no points or fees, which was well below market at the time.

The press has not covered it much - Wapo ran the story and then got the angry memo treatment from the Obama campaign and no one else carried it further (except little papers like the one I linked to).

Which goes back to my point in response to Charles - the press didn't do their job then, and they certainly aren't now.

Girls wearing gym shorts or denim short-shorts (really short!) and flimsy tank tops are common; shorts and tacky t-shirts are the rule. This dress un-code applies, even if the kid has scheduled an interview. It doesn't surprise me that the kids dress in a slovenly or even skanky style. Anyone recall the name of the female attorney who represented the one-eyed mullah? I was running a search on George Soros last week to discover that it was he who paid her for that.

Lynne Steward. Traitor. I thought that under Communism there weren't supposed to be lawers.

Yes for now - back for a visit to the US soon (first time in almost 2 years and way overdue)
I would still like to take one of the armored vehicles and go for a drive with the women here taking driving lessons. But they would throw me out (security) with good reason.
I will ask Barka and Suhaila and Musala tomorrow how the lessons went and if they have their licenses. Thanks for reminding me.
The funny thing here (or not) is that they, woman do not have to take a driving test because there are no women testers and they cannot drive a car with a man they do not know.
Barka told me - get the paper for the classes and you (with a little money) get your license.
Wish I could go drive with them. I would for sure me an experience not to forget.

Thank you for serving in Afghanistan, LindaMarie, in another country Clinton abandoned to the murderous Taliban.

Imagine if Clinton had stopped the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan, denying UBL sanctuary & a place from which to plot 9/11 attacks against us...

Clinton/Gore blew it and ought to go down in infamy.

Cool site Bubblehead.

I once went to an art gallery here in New Orleans with the theme of communism and to my surprise they actually charged money for the beer and wine and it wasn't cheap either! LOL

In his own twisted way, Miller was right. Most any Middle East version of a US statesman would be a violent, backwards mirror image.

re: #182 Charles

True enough, the senior editors in the MSM set the tone & amount of coverage these reports got: not much. Politicians ignored the problem, except when it suited their political agendas. Bergen's book languished on the remainder tables until 9-11 made him a hot property. As for flattering thugs to get a scoop? Unsavory work to be sure, and like garbage collection or proctology, not a job I relish, but somebody has to do it to get the information to the public. I would draw the line a payments or recording propaganda videos for insurgents.

Probably the best fictional portrayal of Teddy Roosevelt was by Tom Berenger in the under-rated TNT movie Rough Riders, made for the Spanish American War Centenniel in 1998. Berenger had obviously researched TR's mannerisms and voice very carefully and was totally convincing in character. One unfortunate critic declared that Berenger was "disastrously miscast," thereby proving that the critic knew nothing about TR.

Interestingly, Brian Keith (who played TR in the Wind and the Lion) was cast as President McKinley in Rough Riders, a much more suitable role for him. Unfortunately, it was also the last of his career since he died just as filming was completed.

Btw, Berenger's real name is Thomas Michael Moore!

306 ErnieG  Wed, Jul 30, 2008 6:44:55pm

I wish he was like Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt is dead.

Hey, maybe he is.
