What's really weird is that the Democrats--and the Left--celebrated all of the dam-building and whatnot which provided electricity for people during the Depression. Woody Guthrie was hired by the Columbia power authority to write songs about the Columbia River and Grand Coulee Dam (one of his few steady-paying gigs). The idea of more power and greater convenience was big stuff back in the '30s and '40s; now, the idea is to prune back our lives and get used to gnawing crusts of bread in the dark.

Lenin had a thing about electricity.

1750 and 1850 the great discoveries in the principles of electricity and magnetism were made by Coulomb, Gauss and Faraday. The battery was invented in 1800 by Volta, so allowing electric current to be used. It was found that electric current could split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases, a process called hydrolysis, that an electric current produces a magnetic field. This led to the invention of the telegraph (1837), the telephone (1876), the electric light bulb (1880) and many other inventions (googled) amazing really

now, the idea is to prune back our lives and get used to gnawing crusts of bread in the dark.

That's because:

1) no one is taught history any more (you know looking at things that actually happened in the past instead of making up a bunch o' crap or trying to fit it into a "narrative")
2) It's been years since everyone had crusts of bread in the dark after 16 hours of working in the fields -- and still feel good they had that.

According to the messiah, we can get all the energy we need by making sure our tires are properly inflated.

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!

So on your way home from work tomorrow, do your duty and inflate your tires!

Back in the 30's it was celebrated because it was Collectivism and Bigger Government. Look at one of Obama's big platforms from 2008: Bigger Government to repair the infrastructure such as bridges and highways. For all the change Obama proposes, it sure sounds a lot like Roosevelt from the 30's battling the Great Depression by making America Socialist.

It may be Gauss to suggest it, but maybe we could have some event where a truly electric woman could be crowned queen Faraday. Just to celebrate the importance of electricity in our lives.

Possibly around Coulomb-us Day.

The physicist who disovered the positron, which is the anti-mater partner to the electron, wanted to call this new particle the Oedipon, after the Greek hero Oedopus, sister of Elektra. The British Royal Society thought this too indecent a conceit and so the uncontroversial term "positron" was invented.

Ludacris is already under the bus.

"As Barack Obama has said many, many times in the past, rap lyrics today too often perpetuate misogyny, materialism, and degrading images that he doesn’t want his daughters or any children exposed to," said spokesman Bill Burton. "This song is not only outrageously offensive to Senator Clinton, Reverend Jackson, Senator McCain, and President Bush, it is offensive to all of us who are trying to raise our children with the values we hold dear. While Ludacris is a talented individual he should be ashamed of these lyrics."

"That is not the Ludacris I knew."

The ISS is powered by a solar array about the size of 2 football fields.
That provides power for 4 souls.

Solar power is a hippie wet dream. Ain't gonna happen. Ever.

Current cost is >$4/watt on home- sized units, which is too high. Two startups recently building factories to produce new- tech stuff at $1/watt. Pay for itself right quick.

I agree with your 'same old, same old" and will see if this is another pig- in- a- poke.
However, tech advances are happening at exponential rate, so in any case, it won't be long.

I use a lot of electricity to run my Folding@home networked machines. I'd be glad to pay for solar tech that would pay for itself in 3 yrs and be gravy after that.

There are things you can do individually, though, to save energy. Making sure your tires are properly inflated — simple thing. But we could save all the oil that they’re talking about getting off drilling — if everybody was just inflating their tires? And getting regular tune-ups? You’d actually save just as much!

Obama's condescending tone imitates the Simpsons.

From the episode where Marge and Homer have to attend parenting classes:

Teacher: There are a lot of little tricks to it, things you should have learned a long time ago. Such as, if you leave milk out, it can go sour. Put it in the refrigerator, or, failing that, a cool wet sack. And put your garbage in a garbage can, people. I can't stress that enough. Don't just throw it out the window.

Maybe it has more significance to some in some places, but here it just seems to be the "tradition." At her graduation in June, part of the celebration the night before was loading down the power lines near the grounds with quite a number of shoes, of which three or so are left as of this writing.

What I've wondered is how they get down. Gradual decay of the laces? Squirrels with time on their paws?

Nonaligned countries back Iran's nuclear program

TEHRAN, Iran - More than 100 nonaligned nations backed Iran's right to peaceful uses of nuclear power on Wednesday, an endorsement sought by Tehran in its standoff with the U.N. Security Council over its refusal to freeze uranium enrichment.
...
Senior Iranian officials depicted the support from a high-level conference of the Nonaligned Movement as deflating claims by the U.S. and its allies that most of the international community wanted Iran to stop enrichment.

But look what else this nonaligned group aligned on (last paragraph of the article). Don't criticize our buddies in Sudan! And it's always a good time to criticize Israel!

A separate closing document took the International Criminal Court's prosecutor to task for indicting Sudanese leader Omar al-Bashir by an international prosecutor on charges of genocide in Darfur. It also harshly criticized Israel on a broad range of issues. Iran assumed the chairmanship of the conference this week.

I LOVE Greek literature (in translation.) Right now I'm acting in a production of Antigone (I'm the chorus), the third of the Oedipus trilogy.

That is awesome.. You are so talented..

I didn't waterboard mine, but she couldn't really give a reason other than "they just do it because they can." Maybe it has more significance to some in some places, but here it just seems to be the "tradition." At her graduation in June, part of the celebration the night before was loading down the power lines near the grounds with quite a number of shoes, of which three or so are left as of this writing.

What I've wondered is how they get down. Gradual decay of the laces? Squirrels with time on their paws?

"Dad, I need some new shoes."
"What happened to the pair we bought you yesterday?"
"Well, like, we were out last night and, ya know, like, we just thought it would be cool to, like, ya know, tie them together and toss them over, ya know, like, powerlines."
"So, you tied your new shoes together and tossed them over the powerlines?
"No, Dad, I just took them off and (insert name of brainless idiot here) tossed them. It was awesome."
"I can think of something even more awesome. Get (insert name of brainless idiot here) to fork over the money for a new pair of shoes."
"That is so unfair!"

The ISS is powered by a solar array about the size of 2 football fields. That provides power for 4 souls.

And their entire life support system, etc.

Solar power will make more and more contributions, in 1000 years it will be most of the power consumed, unless and until we get fusion power.

Nearterm, however, I wouldn't hold my breath.

If I were doing it, I would put the pole up first, then the crossbars, then the wires.
Looks like they put the wires up first, then the crossbars, and next comes the pole.

How dey doo dat?

They hired Belgian contractors.
Kinda like Belgian administrators.

I had the misfortune to have a young fellow working with me, yesterday.

Dude is a so-called apprentice. Whenever I asked him to do something, he would kiss his teeth and screw up his eyes at me.

After the second time he did that, I told him, if he ever kissed his teeth at me again, he would have no teeth left to kiss.

That kinda got the message across.

Dear Supporter,
I am excited to formally invite you to an event with First Lady of the United States Laura Bush. She will be attending a breakfast event in support of my campaign for Congress - and I would like to personally extend an invitation to you.

Then again- if I say a slew of Lizards say hi- the Secret Service might drag me away. :-(

Me too! Me too! Hi Laura. Thanks for everything and give my love to the President.

I've found that nepotism is very, very bad for business.

I work for a privately owned company and nepotism is rampant. The thing is - they employ the useless members of the family because they'd never make it on their own elsewhere. Meanwhile, they create havoc and nobody wants to say anything.

Oh, how well I know the type. About five years ago I signed on with a contractor that did remodeling for a major retail department store chain. My job was to install wooden display cases. On the first day, I was given a "helper". I managed to install one case. On the second day, my "helper" did not show up. I installed one and got a start on a second. On the third day they gave me another "helper". By noon I had convinced him that he was sick and needed to go home. By day's end the foreman was convinced that saddling me with "helpers" was not cost effective.

What really troubles me is the lack of work ethic these "helpers" had.

"Alright, here's what we have to do..."
"What time's break?"

That provides power for 4 souls.

Solar power is a hippie wet dream. Ain't gonna happen. Ever.

Not true. My son has photovoltaic panels on his house, and they are providing all the electricity for everything. His house is not small. He is actually getting credit for the excess from the power company and loves to see the meter running backwards. Not cheap, though.

My hubby owns his own business and we have a firm policy of no nepotism. I don't get involved at all except to advise him from time to time if I think he's being stark raving bonkers about something.

I didn't care for one of his engineers, for instance, and told him so and why. But, he had to figure it out for himself. And he did.
