McCain, Obama, Spears, Hilton

Thu, Jul 31, 2008 at 10:29:35 am PDT

Here’s that new John McCain political advertisement associating Barack Obama with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The point that Obama is treated as a celebrity is a good one, but the comparison with Spears and Hilton is a little weird.

Youtube Video

UPDATE at 7/31/08 10:45:27 am:

Obama says this is just another right-wing scare tactic.

“What they’re going to do is make you scared — of me,” Obama told voters in Springfield, Missouri.

He has a point. Britney Spears fills me with dread.

I don't know. Obama, Spears, Hilton == vapid celeberties? Works for me. At least McCain is getting into the ring.

I love it and McCain needs to do more. He ought to go to ANWAR and hold a press conference stating he has changed his position, too.

While Spears has been erratic (ostensibly because of legitimate mental health issues, likely including substance abuse), Hilton isn't unpredictable at all.

Her "job" has been to manipulate the media for personal coverage, and she's been very good at it.

While the comparison of Obama-worship to vacuous celebrity worship is probably legitimate, I simply don't think McCain should "go there".

There was a young woman who called Rush a few days ago who made the connection between Brittany and Obama. The excessive media hype and Brittany's buying into it was part of her down fall. Obama's excessive coverage and his losing touch with that's he's not president yet, looks like he's vulnerable to the same kind of Brittany down fall. It's turning off that generation. The same observation has been made by that age group in my household.

Agree with you at the "meta" level - Hilton's celebrity is celebrity.

I am just trying to think of what image could have been inserted instead of them that would:
1) make people notice
2) make as much news
3) make a valid comparison of "rock star" ( a term the press loves to use regarding Obama).

I get the weird part - that was my first impression. But for that very reason I think it is effective - it forces you to make the association and think about it for a moment. If the association were inaccessible (eg not something that would immediatley come to mind) then the add wouldn't work.

McCain has gotten a lot of press for it. That is a good thing. The idea is out there.

The point that Obama is treated as a celebrity is a good one, but the comparison with Spears and Hilton is a little weird.

Not to me. He has all the character, talent, and worldliness of those two idiots. And equally poor taste in associates and friends. The media loves Obama like it loves Paris and Spears, and nobody can actually put forth a valid reason. And like Paris and Brittany, he has not a clue about much of anything. And I am certain both of the two vacuum skulls plan to vote for Obama, except they don't understand that "voter registration thing".....

Another idea.
Have celebrities Joli, Voigt, Arnold etc. (there are some out there) dressed very sober and serious 3 or 4 together one seated and staring into the camera, "We are celebrities it is a gift we have and we can use to draw attention to important issues but do not be fooled. Emotion and sex are not good reasons to choose a leader in a dangerous world."

94 The Shadow Do  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 10:47:02am

It's not about the issues, yet. That will come. Right now it is all about defining the opponent. If this sticks, and I think it will, Obama is well on his way to becoming the butt of many a joke. This is all good.

Hilarious.

I'd like to address the second video.
Sure, this is a "negative" ad, since it attacks Obama.
But then *ANY* criticism of an opponent is a "negative" ad.

Hitting Obama on his refusal to permit offshore drilling and raising taxes are legitimate substantive criticisms. That's not "below the belt" dirt, these are major policy issues.

The "hook" of mocking Obama for his rock-star like tours might be a bit unseemly, but its a pretty gentle jab, and its accurate.

Seen the videos of Paris using the N-word?

Some reason they didn't get as much play as Kramer, etc.

Easy to understand. Michael Richards rant was was the word over and over again shouted in anger at hecklers that he couldn't control and grew frustrated with, while Paris used it less as an angry epithet. Also, as a White male, Richards took on the role of lightening rod for Sharpton's ire with that little tirade. Paris' reputation as an idiot also protects her somewhat. It's easy to dismiss her as a ditz that doesn't know better, even when it's obvious that she is 'crazy like a fox' stupid.

OK, we'll just have to agree to disagree on this; I think Obama - with the MSM's all too willing assistance - has deliberately tried to make himself a "rock star" sort of persona.
McCain has pointed that out, but hasn't acted as one himself. And I do think that's a valid point - but McCains next ad ought to be that he's still waiting for Obama to hold that series of "townhall" meetings with him. And THAT ad should follow on the heels of this one very quickly indeed.

Remember that this is an ad being aired in the midwest - the Jacksonian belt.

These are folks who are not in love with Europe and they do not seek European approval.

Recent case in point is the complete failure of the Daimler-Benz acquisition (and then sale) of Chrysler.

Utter. Cultural. Clash.

Had Chrysler been based in New York or LA, the Chrysler workers would have slavishly accepted the overbearing European management as being somehow enlightened. Folks in the midwest judge you for what you present to them.

McCain is targeting the rust belt letting them know that this is a guy who puts appearance over substance and he is forcing them to think about it, even for a fleeting moment. It will work in that market, IMO.

An amazingly biased AP story on the economy:

Of the latest GDP news, President Bush said: "It's not as good as we'd like it to be, but I want to remind you a few months ago there were predictions that the economy would shrink this quarter," he said.

Instead, GDP contracted by 0.2 percent, on an annualized basis, in the last three months of 2007, according to annual revisions released by the government.

Dude, that was 2 quarters ago!

Ok, so let's look at the results quarter by quarter:
Q4 2007: -0.2%
Q1 2008: +0.9%
Q2 2008: +1.9%

...and the economy jolted into reverse at the end of 2007, raising new recession fears

Seems to me like it didn't jolt much at all in Q4 2007. But has actually been jolting in the other direction.

Read the whole thing. Bad news is filled with action packed words like "jolted" and "feeble" while good news is buried and neutral.

Its a good ad.

The point is linking Obama to Spears and particularly Hilton is just to show the disconnect between Obama's fame/popularity and his actual accomplishments (which are on a par with Hiltons. . .basically zero. At least Spears was a legitimate pop star once, selling gazillions of albums).

Obama's positions on taxes and energy alone could crush him, if presented properly.

"Senator Obama thinks the price of gasoline isn't high enough already, and wants to increase the tax YOU pay every time you fill up your tank. Is that the kind of "change" we've all been hoping for?"

Someone on McCains advertising team knows how to play the game! WTG!

David Zucker, the director and writer who helped create “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun” franchise has called on Hollywood’s tiny but tightly knit Republican A-list crowd to help him make a broad yet unusually right-leaning political satire titled “An American Carol.”

The low-budget indie co-stars Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer with Oscar-winner Jon Voight, cinema icon Dennis Hopper, model-heiress Paris Hilton and frequent Zucker stooge Leslie Nielsen in minor roles. Release is planned sometime by year’s end; the director suggested Friday, Sept. 12, to coincide with the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001,

Obama has clearly outlined his plans for the future of America. McCain better start hammering home the reality of what Obama's dream of a socialistic America will actually entail. I have many friends who lean on the liberal side but they start to sit up and take notice once I list some of Obama's ideas. They have no idea how socialistic he really is and they suddenly start thinking about paying attention to the election a little more than before. The MSM is protecting Obama. There are real rednecks that support Obama only because of the war in Iraq.

Montana is a good example - you wouldn't expect the race to be close there, but in that part of the country you have many folks who just oppose foreign wars unless we've been attacked. Remember Bob Dole's "Democratic Wars" comment when he was running for VP? These are the same folks who opposed Kosovo.

They supported Iraq on the basis of WMD/ Terror. They read old media and many are convinced by the "Bush lied" meme. That, and many of these guys are tied to the AG economy, which is filled with Governtment subsidies so a (D) after a name doesn't automatically scare them.

With Iraq going better, many of them will move back to undecided. If you know any of them, send them a "500 tons of yellowcake" google search and they will learn that there was a WMD program in Iraq and that the MSM/ Dems have been the one's lying.

That is the only real message that people (who are actually going to vote) will respond to IMHO.

It's a real problem. Spread through fecal matter, it is resistant to chlorine at levels that are safe for human exposure and used to disinfect public pools. If a pool is infected, super-chlorination is an effect disinfectant, but it shuts the pool down until chlorine levels are safe for human exposure again.

I've gotten some emails complaining that the mainstream media didn't mention something about Barack Obama's speech in Berlin: He was preceded on stage by a couple of popular rock bands, which could account for the size of the crowd.

That's a fact worth knowing, and one the major U.S. newspapers didn't report. If a presidential candidate is hanging onto the coattails of a music act, voters watching from the other side of the planet ought to be aware of it.

Look up the Obamanation's Doctoral Dissertation -- then critique it. Compare it to what he's said in the campaign...make sure it's pointed and sarcastic and demonstrates what a prevaricating, disingenuous, fluffed-up, pretentious, strutting peacock he really is...

Yeah - but right now, before Denver, wouldn't that play right into BOs hands as being a real heavy-weight candidate?
Once he's 'crowned', McCain can lay into the issues. Right now getting BO worried about style and stuff, which is indeed of less importance ,is a good thing - McCain needs to be able to ratchet things up in the autumn, not now. He needs to keeep, as it were, his powder dry and not give the BO campaign stuff to get their teeth into quite yet.
And getting BO to act hysterical about such style issues will prepare the ground for later.

What also wasn't mentioned was the fact that many in the audience were from the extreme left "hate America" groups in Europe and that Obama campaign members met with them beforehand, asking them to leave their anti-American signs home and carry Obama signs instead. Great to know Obama is so popular with the great unwashed of Europe. Just what we need, a president that those people actually like.

I think the ad is too obtuse. And the first 10 seconds of those precious 30 seconds is wasted in my view on the whole Britney Paris analogy. So basically, he uses only half the ad time to talk about Obama raising taxes. The problem I have with this is that all Democrats always want to raise taxes. So what else in new? That message and $5 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

What is different about Obama is that he wants Americans to send more of their money to foreign governments because we have too much and they all have too little, pay reparations, evacuate from Iraq leaving the people helpless, create a socialized medical system, give illegals voting rights as well as free healthcare and an education, meet with terrorists and have us all try to understand their objections to the Great Satan America, reproach ourselves for being a "mean" people, form a citizen service organization like no other ever seen (at least in America...maybe in Germany...), etc. These are the messages that are important in my view.

But I'd agree it really isn't fair to Hilton and Spears to be featured in that ad.

What did *they* do wrong to be linked politically to this empty suit?

Its a "hook" to draw the attention for the second part.
There is only so much that can be conveyed in a 30 second ad.

As to the rest of your issues, I'd agree they're all legitimate, but I doubt they can be realistically covered in 30 seconds.

We're living in the "You Tube" world of hyper-short attention spans.

If you can't make your point in ten seconds (or less) you've lost your audience.

re: #298 looking closely

Fine - you want 10 seconds.

I'll give you 10 seconds on Obama:

Have images of Ayers, Doern, and other Weather Underground Terrorists in background, along with a smiling Obama. Get photo of Ayers standing on American flag, followed by Obama and Ayers together. Voiceover notes that both are cozy friends working in Chicago together. Same backgrounds, same goals. Business as usual among the fringe left.

Or:
Show oil pump with price spinning furiously. Show prices at supermarkets going through the roof. Voiceover ensues: Obama talks a good game about hope and change. Too bad his only prescription for high gas prices and inflation is to insist you check your tire pressure, not demand that Congress lift the offshore oil ban. That's change we can do without.

Are they negative ads? Absolutely. But negative ads work. Brutal. Direct. And Factually accurate.

re: #311 Anthony (Los Angeles)

I think the comparison with Spears and Hilton is right on the mark: they're famous for being famous, not for any real achievement.

As mentioned above, her post-stardom shenanigans (likely mental illness fueled) have obscured what was actually a highly successful pop career.

Spears has had four consecutive albums debut at #1, has sold 31 million albums in the USA and an estimate 80+ million nationally. She was the youngest artist ever to get a hit on the Billboard top 100 chart.

She's one of the highest selling female recording artists in history, and has (an entirely self-made) net worth estimated at greater than $100 million.

So its really not fair to say "she hasn't done anything". She's actually pretty accomplished, though again, you wouldn't know it from her erratic behavior over the past few years.

Hilton, on the other hand, really hasn't done anything except be lucky enough to be born into extreme wealth and have her appearance altered by cosmetic surgery.

He alleged the suspect had a "large hunting knife" and repeatedly stabbed the victim "like 50 or 60 times."

"The attacker was calmy over top of the victim continually cutting him. I think the victim was gone at that point," Caton told the CBC.

He said the victim appeared to be sleeping before the attack and the suspect was not acting out of the ordinary.

re: #362 Sifty

The most glaring similarity between Spears and Obama that strikes me:

They are creations of other people. Like a Pop Frankenstein and a Political Frankenstein; picked off a menu of pervy old men and liberal political fetishists, cobbled together from polls and research and pushed out under the spotlight by puppet masters.

Get them off-script and they have no big-boy pants.

Spears can still sing. Nobody really ever gave her credit for more than that anyway (see my last post on this).

Again, in terms of accomplishment, Spears has nothing to be shy about, particularly given that she's under 30 years old. (And IMO, she wipes the floor with what BHO has done in his much longer lifespan).

Now maybe she didn't write her own music, or lyrics, or create her own image, or slick marketing. Maybe she hasn't done anything positive of note for several years, and maybe her "hook" was ultimately just child fetishism. But as a pop-star, she still grabbed the brass ring.

Another, more uplifting ad:

Show photos of Americans at play, work, etc. - beauty pass of NYC, SF, folks attending a HS football game in Nebraska, etc. -

Voice over: It's been a difficult period in US history. We've accomplished much, we've overcome tremendous adversity, and we're secure in the knowledge that the best is yet to come. However, to ensure that, we need a stable and secure supply of energy; something that Obama and his fellow Democrats in Congress refuse to permit. Demand something different. A leader who will help put the US on a path to energy independence - not pushing hot air (end with Obama on his bike with the flat tire).

101 looking closely :

"The "hook" of mocking Obama for his rock-star like tours might be a bit unseemly, but its a pretty gentle jab, and its accurate."

Agreed, and more importantly, it is now Consistent, as well!

Mac is finally coming out swinging - since last Sat.'s attack on BHO for failing to support the surge, after the fact, even if he had all to do over again. Excellent!

3 days ago, Mac (his campaign) pops BHO with a stiff jab - labeling him as presumptive and arrogant for his demeanor during his ME/EU tour, including his decision to go to the gym instead of visiting the wounded US troops in German hospitals. That smarts!

This pop, picked up by the media, set up yesterday's heavy right hand to the ribs w/ his Cele Spot that uses a great hook to deliver the message that "Yes We Can" says "No I Won't" to energy solutions that work (drill hear/now, dump dependence of foreign oil) and to lower taxes to stim the economy.

Keep it Up. It rallies the Repup troops/support and builds the meme that BHO is a mega Media-built "Rock Star" who is unqualified for the position of POTUS, during a time of war, or any other time.

Perhaps one proof of this strategy's effectiveness is the current poll. The numbers show today that both are about tied.

What? Little-to-no bounce now for Nowhere Man's "Now is our time" world tour. After all that planning and effort, w/ three Network anchors in tow and fake Pressers? Ouch!

The BHO crowd was knocked of balance w/ the Celeb spot as evidenced by it's hip shot response ad and Obama's whining!

Mac is now capitalizing on public opinion/rejection of BHO's cleb performance = empty suit, big smile, will travel gambit to position/film him as more than a candidate, but, in fact, the President. This is unprecedented in US campaign history for a candidate to deliver "wow'um" content-free, empty speeches abroad.

Finally, this thing is getting interesting, even before the Conventions & the Chinese fauxlympics media festival (sigh).

Focus succinctly on the core issues, Mac (energy, borders, culture, economy, etc.) while continuing to tag Obama with humorous jabs that poke holes in his big hot air MSM-filled balloon, and don't let up until the debates begin.

Then go for the KO against the "Teleprompter Kid"! Popcorn, anyone?

To Leftists, everything is a code for rape. I took a few feminist courses in college....

Probably not coincidentally, persons who don't/won't get laid often fantasize about rape.

The most commonly held theory about this phenomenon is that many individuals turn to fantasies about being raped as a means of reconciling naturally-occurring sexual desires with the intense negative stigma their culture and/or creed affix to sexual activity. The fantasy serves as a psychological device through which the fantasizer can safely indulge in intense sexual experiences without guilt, by absolving themselves of responsibility for participating in the act. Many socially acceptable examples can be found in "bodice ripper" fiction.

Though you find this hard to accept, there are women who fantasize about being sexually abused, forcefully, by strangers.

As you say, the number who *ACTUALLY* want this to happen (as opposed to merely fantasizing about it) is miniscule. Good (scholarly) article on this here:

[Link: findarticles.com...]

I think of this sort of thing as similar conceptually to having fantasies about killing your boss (ex-spouse, annoying neighbor, etc). Lots of people fantasize about this, VERY few ever act on these fantasies.

Hilton's talent has been in turning herself into a "celebrity" and maintaining constant media attention for a relatively long time, without the usual explanation of being a popular actor or musician.

In other words, her talent is turning herself into a "celebrity" and maintaining that status, without having any other marketable talent.

You may (rightfully) mock, but doing it actually isn't nearly as easy as it sounds, and she's been successful at it where innumerable others have failed.

Unwittingly starring in an underground sex tape obviously kick started this for her, but the same attempted stunt subsequently failed for others who have tried it since.

Look-I'm not clicking on any other 'women rape fantasy' sites...DIG?
I've clarified upthread what I think.

I DIG.
I didn't see your clarification (also incorrect) before I took the trouble to try to inform your comment by linking to a scholarly article which summarizes a number of legitimate rape fantasy studies. If your attitude is coming from the idea that rape fantasies are used as a cheap defence trick by criminal lawyers defending rapists then I understand your sentiments, but even so, calling common and (for the most part harmless) human fantasies "sick" smacks of knee-jerk political correctness.

re: #458 lifeofthemind

This sounds like a lot of pornography. Women do very little consumption of pornography as most people define it. Most of the people who identify themselves as women in sex chat rooms are supposedly male. Women do spend millions of dollars on romance novels (Think Romancing the Stone)

There is, of course, pornography with simulated rape, or rape-fantasy type stuff, but that's the tail pulling the horse.

Such pornography (aimed at men) exists because there are some men who fantasize about perpetrating rape, or might enjoy watching it. (Which again, doesn't mean that they are likely to actually commit rape, anymore than someone who enjoys watching a Rambo movie is likely to start shooting people with a machine gun). Simply put, it is produced because there is a market niche for it.

In parallel, "bodice ripper" romance novels, depicting rape of women is legimately considered a sort of literary pornography enjoyed by women. (And if you've ever read some of this stuff, I don't think "pornography" is too strong a word. ..some of it is pretty explicit). Why would these novels depict rape if no women ever wanted to read about it? Again, there is a market for this stuff.

The original point, though, is that the most popular psychiatric explanation of rape fantasies is that they represent unfulfilled sexual desire. If a certain group of individuals (eg feminists) believe that everything points to rape, or is otherwise obsessed with rape, I think that I think that reflects more on them as a group than than on society as a whole.

And I'm off this depressing topic.

He's simply trying to link McCain to unpopular Bush and his ridiculously low approval ratings (which, by the way, are still higher than those of the Dem-majority Congress).

The problem with this line of attack is that McCain has essentially built his personal reputation by being a pain in Bush's ass for the last eight years. Anyone who knows McCain's history knows he isn't Bush and has never been a dogmatic Bush loyalist.

re: #447 Kenneth

I truly hope Obama & McCain meet in a debate. All McCain needs to do is hit Obama with his trademark biting wit, then sit back & watch the fireworks. Obama cannot stand to be mocked.

All McCain has to do is laugh at him.
---------
Oh Yea! Especially mocked about zero qualifications/experience required for the POTUS job. This leaves him naked.

But first, Mac should wait for the moderator to ask the "Nowhere Man" (for the 100th time, now) if he really meant to say in the ME that the surge is not working, wouldn't/couldn't work, and that he would really say it all again afore hand, even though all now agree that it is working?

After Obama's zig-zag, "well, yasee", ummm, er, "none answer, answer", Mac, smiling broadly, looks up saying - "Barak, There You Go Again!, al la Ronald the Gypper. Then laugh his ass off - out loud!

Even the moderators would be biting their tongs.

Then Mac recovers and reminds the audience that no President in our history has ever spurned, rebuked, and criticized a victorious success by our military operations on foreign soil, while still at war. Just unbelievable!

He continues..."I maintain that by his own admissions on this topic here tonight, the most important one a CIC can regard, Senator Obama has revealed that he lacks the gravitas, the skill, the experience and the judgment to assume the mantle of POTUS!"

"My friends, I maintain that this is no time to place a Celebrity Candidate promising hope and change without definition, in the Oval Office,..... for,......our national security, the viability of our economy and the future of generations to come are all on the line at this moment. I urge you all to give serious consideration to Senator Obama's lack of qualifications to shoulder the burdens of the office, and then vote for the one who has dedicated his entire 40 year career of service to his country, for one who is capable and qualified by experience to make the tough decisions that this office requires and.... and I promise you that I will make those decisions in the best interest of all US citizens!"

Checkmate! Then hammer this theme of no experience, past/current associations, and "Change to What?" w/ humorous spots until 2 weeks before the election - which is when the Rev. Wright spots hit the air, non-stop.

Then roll out this on 11/1/08 - the 3 am White House phone rings on the bedside table next to a big empty bed, cutting to BHO shooting hoops alone, in the newly build White House Gym w/ VO: "Can you afford to bet, that this man will make the right decisions.......when the time comes?" cutting graphic back to the bedside phone ringing! Super, w/ pic of MAC on Oval Office phone & VO out: "Vote for a Confident America - Vote for qualified leadership that will answer the call! Vote John McCain!"

re: #22 karmic_inquisitor

I think the association with Spear and Hilton aren't altogether weird - they are vacuous uber-celebs

Well, Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt are vacuous uber-celebs, too -- yet for some reason, the McCain ad used Paris and Britney as the archetypal V.U-C's with which to compare Obama.

Hmmmmmm, I think there's some kind of subliminal message, here -- but what, oh what, could it be?!

494 arizona9  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 7:11:43pm

Comparing Obama with Spears and Hilton? Yeah, I can see the reasoning - none of them has accomplished anything worth their 'celebrity'.

That was exactly my take. The ad is saying that Obama, like Britney and Paris, is famous for little or nothing. Little being Britney and nothing being Paris. I think that McCain was making the point that Hillary did when she compared her, McCain's and Obama's respective paths to becoming their party's nominee...she said that she and McCain got there through years of work and experience while Obama was got there by giving a speech. And that is absolutely true.

495 arizona9  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 7:16:09pm

A poster made reference to Obama himself comparing himself to Paris Hilton on two occasions. This is one, apparently..

"Andy Warhol said we all get our 15 minutes of fame," then Senator-elect Obama said at a Gridiron dinner in December, 2004. "I've already had an hour and a half. I mean, I'm so overexposed, I'm making Paris Hilton look like a recluse."

Anyone know what the other one was?

496 Eagle of Freedom  Thu, Jul 31, 2008 7:57:54pm

There's no comparison between Barack Saddam Hussein Obama Bin Laden. Paris Hilton and Britney Spears are a million times smarter than he his!

re: #317 lawhawk

And if there is any footage of Doern screaming "Stick a fork in her!" after Sharon Tate was brutally murdered, or of Ayers stating that he has no regrets about his terrorist activities and wishes they could have killed more people, by all means, include it.

The time to get dirty is long overdue.

re: #437 WriterMom

You're right...and I should have clarified.

I guess I also suspect that the 'rape fantasy' people are still thinking about a fantasy, with someone they are acquainted with-which is obviously quite a different scenario than a total stranger in a random, ACTUAL, brutal sexual assault.

And WriterMom most certainly NOT dated any chicks!

I once read something written about this, I think by a sex psychologist, that when women have rape fantasies, very often there is another male present who is "in charge" of the man/men, and his function is to make sure that she does not get hurt -- in other words, she really likes it and is not actually being raped and she has a protector whoh keeps it that way. "Rape" fantasies are usually just sexual dominance fantasies, and not rape per se.

500 Lawrence Schmerel  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 8:35:29am

This add by the McCain Campaign, comparing Barack Obama to Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, suggests that McCain will not be inclined to take my advice to pick a VP with star power like Angelina Jolie.
