Al Qaeda Iraq Leader Bails?

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 10:14:00 am PDT

The Washington Post’s Amit Paley has more evidence from Iraq that Al Qaeda is in complete disarray: Al-Qaeda in Iraq Leader May Be in Afghanistan.

BAGHDAD, July 30 — The leader of the Sunni insurgent group al-Qaeda in Iraq and several of his top lieutenants have recently left Iraq for Afghanistan, according to group leaders and Iraqi intelligence officials, a possible further sign of what Iraqi and U.S. officials call growing disarray and weakness in the organization.

U.S. officials say there are indications that al-Qaeda is diverting new recruits from going to Iraq, where its fighters have suffered dramatic setbacks, to going to Afghanistan and Pakistan, where they appear to be making gains.

“We do believe al-Qaida is doing some measure of re-assessment regarding the continued viability of its fight in Iraq and whether Iraq should remain the focus of its efforts,” Brig. Gen. Brian Keller, senior intelligence officer for Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top American commander in Iraq, wrote in an e-mail. But Keller said that the reliability of indications that recruits have been diverted has “not yet been determined” and that U.S. officials have no evidence that top al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders have gone to Afghanistan.

A largely homegrown insurgent group that American officials believe is led by foreigners, al-Qaeda in Iraq has long been one of the most ruthless and dangerous organizations in the country. But even some of its leaders acknowledge that it has been seriously weakened over the past year.

The number of foreign fighters entering Iraq has dropped to 20 a month, down from about 110 a month last summer and as many as 50 a month earlier this year, according to a senior U.S. intelligence analyst who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the nature of his work.

the one thing of many I take from this is that the Iraqi army (thanks to the US soldiers leadership and training) is finally getting their shit together and aq realizes its time to do what they do best...run away. But now its time to get them in Afgan. Time to bolster our forces there and go for the slam dunk on these bastards.

This is why we need to remember it isn't a ''war in Iraq,'' or a ''war in Afghanistan,'' but it is an asymmetric global war on terror.
We have to be able to hunt them down and kill them until they cannot even attract more recruits.
We even have to be able to look like we're following Obama's script if that's what it takes to win.

McCain Camp Compares Times Editorial Board to 'the Average Daily Kos Diarist'

"If the shareholders of the New York Times ever wonder why the paper's ad revenue is plummeting and its share price tanking, they need look no further than the hysterical reaction of the paper's editors to any slight, real or imagined, against their preferred candidate. This campaign has never engaged in 'racially tinged attacks,' and the Obama campaign conceded as much yesterday in a statement clarifying that "Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue."

That the Times made this allegation in a blog post rather than running it on the editorial page indicates that they either knew the charge was bogus or they didn't have the nerve to make their case in full view of the public. But in their new role as bloggers, the paper's editors seem to have all the intelligence and reason of the average Daily Kos diarist sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of dungeons and dragons. They also have about as much care for the facts--the "board" has already been forced to append a correction."

Obama: I'm going to call on these young men. Just one of you. All right? And remember, I made a promise to you. But also I want you to give your mike back after you ask your question or make your comment.

Protestor: So my question is: In the face of the numerous attacks that are made against the African community or the black community, by the same US government that you aspire to lead -- and we are talking about attacks like the subprime mortgage that you spoke of -- it wasn't just a general ambiguous kind of phenomena, a phenomena that targeted the African community and Latino community, attacks like the killing of Sean Bell by the New York police department and right here in St. Petersburg by the St. Petersburg police, and Jena 6 and Hurricane Katrina, and the list goes on. In the face of all these attacks that are clearly being made on the African community, why is it that you have not had the ability to not one time speak to the interests and even speak on the behalf of the oppressed and exploited African community or black community in this country?
Obama: Well, I, ah, I guess, I... Hold on a second, everybody. I want everybody to be respectful. That's why we are having a town hall meeting. That's democracy at work. And he asked a legitimate question, so I want to give him an answer.

I think you are misinformed about when you say not one time. Every issue you've spoken about, I actually did speak out about. I'm going to go through the various specific examples. I've been talking about predatory lending for the last two years in the United States Senate and worked to pass legislation to prevent it when I wan in the state legislature. And I have repeatedly said that many of the predatory loans that were made in the mortgage system did target African American and Latino communities. I've said that repeatedly.
Number two, Jena Six -- I was the first candidate to get out there and say this is wrong, that there's an injustice that's been done and we need to change it. That's number two.

When Sean Bell got shot, I put out a statement immediately saying this is a problem. (Protestors yell out something inaudible.) I'm sorry, wait, wait, wait, don't start, hold on, don't start, you know shouting back, I'm just answering your question. On each of these issues, I've spoken out. Now, I may not have spoken out the way you would have wanted me to speak out, which is fine.

More from Obama: Here's what I'm suggesting. What I'm suggesting is that on each of these issues that you mentioned, I have spoken out and I have spoken out forcefully. I was a civil-rights lawyer. I have passed, I passed -- hold on a second -- I passed the first racial profiling legislation in Illinois. I passed, I passed some of the toughest death penalty reform legislation in Illinois. So, these are issues I've worked on for decades. Now, that doesn't mean I'm always going to satisfy the way you guys want these issues framed. I understand that, which gives you the option of voting for somebody else. It gives you the option of running for office yourself. Those are all options. But the one thing that I think is important, the one thing that I think is important is that we're respectful towards each other. And what is true is I believe that the only way we're going to solve our problems in this country... The only way were going to solve our problems in this country is if all of us come together -- black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, young, old, disabled, gay, straight. That I think has got to be our agenda.

Al Qaeda bails on Iraq because they lost their safe havens, and it's no longer safe for their bigwigs to stick around or else they'll end up like Zarqawi - dead.

So, they're going where they know they'll be safer - Pakistan/Afghan border (NWFP, Warizistan, etc.).

That's 1,000 miles away, which begs another question entirely.

How exactly are they getting from Iraq to the Afghan/Pakistani border regions undetected unless they're transiting through Iran?

"Molon",

Heard this too, if true - 48-72 Hour Rule on this one - Al Queda is having a worse week than Pres. Bush and Sen. Obama combined.

"We have the Iranians to thank"

/Barbara Boxer upon being told of the pending American/Iraqi victory

I wonder if those geniuses like Boxer and Reid and Pelosi realize that the converse is that we HAD THE IRANIANS TO BLAME for the American soldiers killed before they "cooperated". i.e. Acts of war against the U.S.

All I've been reading for the last 5 years is the NY Times, who are these "al-Qaeda in Iraq" people?

Are they working with "al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia" sometimes mentioned by the NY Times?

From the beginning this has been up to the Iraqis to pick up the baton and carry it forward. We are seeing clear evidence of the effective leadership and training offered by our noncoms to the noncom corps of the New Iraqi Army and Police forces. The warrior sprit of our Tops and Gunnys is getting full absorption into their noncom leadership, growing stronger and self-reliance is now rooted deeply into the Iraqi military structure. It is the irresistable force that the Army and Marines brought to Falluja. The insurgents were ground into pieces by the combat firepower of USA and USMC. It took weeks for the deviants to finally grasp the fact behind the US military: You can't beat them and they aren't going away.

The dedicated Iraqi forces will emulate these combat skills ... learn geometry of fires, dicipline of fire, etc. Find, close with and fix the enemy position, then kill them.
The Iraqi forces are getting very strong and AQI knows this. Those that doubt will be destroyed. The new IA move forward, they close with the enemy, they fix their positions and kill them. They generate cover fire and retrive their wounded. The Iranians are crapping their pants observing the ever growing power of their neighbor.

When and how will BHO manuver his denial on the effectiveness of the surge? When will the scales fall from the eyes of the MSN?
