Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 11:20:40 am PDT

It was expected, but still a milestone for science and space exploration; the Phoenix Mars Lander has definitively proved the existence of water on Mars.

I was recently privileged to hear Dr. Charles Elachi speak on this mission. The whole thing was fascinating. When you ponder the sheer number of things that had to be done right, with no room for error, (in light of the seemingly boundless propensity for humans to err) the mind truly boggles at this achievement.

Frank J. weighs in.

Did you know that Water on Mars may have been confirmed? Do you know how important this is?

I sure don't. I'm pretty sure we have plenty of water here. The other day it was falling on me and it made me mad.

I guess what is it important about it is that you need water for life, so there's the possibility of life on Mars. And do you what life does? It dies. And do you know what dead things do? They become oil!

Are you thinking what I'm thinking?

If McCain really wants to shake this election up, he need to come out and announce, "I propose a manned mission to Mars within my presidency. And when we get to the planet, we will drill the mother@#$%."

You can get more hope and change than drilling Mars for oil.

Of course, environmentalists are going to be screaming, "You can't drill on Mars! You'll ruin its pristine prissiness!"

I hate those people! I wish could drill them in the stomach with a big industrial drill!

The fact is, Mars is an enemy planet. That been long established. We can drill it all we want and we shouldn't feel bad. It's not like I'm proposing we drill right in Olympus Mons. Mars is big -- like bigger than Alaska -- there are plenty of places to drill.

So what if there is life on Mars and they get angry at us for taking their oil? Here's the thing: They're homeless. Since it's most people understanding that you have to have a home on Earth to not be considered homeless, all life on Mars is homeless. And common law says we can do whatever we want to homeless people since they don't have homes. So I say we lock them up in Gitmo.

"But didn't the Supreme Court say we can't lock anyone up in Gitmo?" you ask. I planned for that. We also lock the Supreme Court up in Gitmo. Then when people go to the Supreme Court to complain about us locking up Martians, they'll be like, "Where is everyone?" Because the only one there will be angry, violent Scalia, and he'll rule as he always rules: "Kill them all!"

Wait; how do we get the oil back? Maybe a large catapult? Or I could repurpose the Mexi-Cannon™. We'll hammer something out.

75 FurryOldGuyJeans  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 11:37:44am

re: #32 Sharmuta

I'm guessing that if we could find microscopic life on Mars, the evolutionary process was halted by whatever transpired to make Mars the uninhabitable planet we see now.

From some of the reading I have done it was, in part or in whole, a massive bombardment by a swarm of meteors or something similar. The damage was significant enough to have plowed through the planet and blasted up Mons Olympus, and ripped off nearly the entire northern hemisphere's crust to quite a depth.

Liquid Found On Surface Of Saturn's Moon Titan

At least one of many large, lakelike features on Saturn's moon Titan studied by the international Cassini spacecraft contains liquid hydrocarbons, making it the only body in the solar system besides Earth known to have liquid on its surface, NASA said Wednesday.

Scientists positively identified the presence of ethane, according to a statement from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, which manages the Cassini mission exploring Saturn, its rings and moons.

Liquid ethane is a component of crude oil.

Obama proposes $1,000 per taxpayer bribe to be elected President.

He's economically illiterate.

$1,000 to offset energy costs, which will raise inflation further, will not actually reduce the energy costs (increased supply coupled with decreased demand does that!) and would be funded by yet another tax on oil company profits (gee, that feels good as we drive another indigenous industry into the ash heap of history, even as the oil companies only make pennies on the dollar compared with other industries).

It was expected, but still a milestone for science and space exploration; the Phoenix Mars Lander has definitively proved the existence of water on Mars.

Great news. Now when can we expect the first shipment of moonbats to depart for planet Rosie? Do we have to wait for Obama to lose by the largest and most embarrassing landslide since McGovern?

Actually- I was wondering if this might throw a wrench in the idea that oil is fossil based if we could confirm it exists elsewhere in the solar system. I was reading somewhere recently that there is a new theory that earth produces oil as some sort of by-product.

Interesting. But then how do we know that there aren't fossils on other planets/moons? We barely know our own planet, I think it is difficult to make assumptions about others.

I'm guessing that if we could find microscopic life on Mars, the evolutionary process was halted by whatever transpired to make Mars the uninhabitable planet we see now.

I will fearlessly predict that genuine fossil footprints of 5 toed bipeds being chased by 3 toed beasts are as likely to be found on Mars as on Earth.

And here I thought Sen. Obama was running for US President - Guess he decided "Outlaw of Sherwood Forrest" is more to his taste.

Big news & not unexpected. Hey I saw Alien.
I missed the last thread. If the NY Times and Barry Hussein didn't like that ad, they will go mental with the new one that Limbaugh just played on the radio.
It takes all of Obamas narcissistic comments & a voice over keeps referring to him as "The One"
It covers , We are the ones that we have been waiting for."
'This is our time , this is our moment." "The seas will cease to rise & the Earth will heal."
At the end, Limbaugh says the visual is Charlton Heston as Moses parting the sea & the faux presidential seal appears.
It is obvious that they are laying out his meeianic delusions. In other words , Barry is a head case.

I think this one will make them squirm more.

They will go "the out of context" route and "negative campaigning" route.

When he does, McCain has a very tidy retort - the whole "100 years" distortion which Obama is guilty of and was doing in March, which brings the discussion of Iraq back into the news, as well as Obama's quotes from back then.

The McCain campaign has seized the initiative (finally).

I just don't think that Reagan had the complete vacuum of coverage that this election does.

The press was tough on Carter. And Carter made the biggest and most obvious issue off limits (Iran) which Reagan did abide by (except for one remark in one speech). But Carter was hammered on the economy and Iran. Nightline was started as a news show to simply sum up the (lack of) progress on the Hostages every day.

McCain has had no coverage to speak of, and even had just one reporter and photographer show up at an event just over a week ago.

McCain has been blacklisted by the media. He had to punch through and get them to do their job, even if they are going to go after him.

In PR, even bad press is good press, because your name is out there.

Deep Oil Deposits Replenishing Themselves

Petroluem also naturally rises within rock and sediment, above the water. As such, we should expect any petroleum in the rocks and sediments to fill in areas where we have already removed petroleum nearer the surface. And, the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Louisiana, as discussed in that article, has layers upon layers of sediments with biologic material deposited by the Mississippi and other rivers, as well as plankton that feeds off nutrients brought into the Gulf from those rivers. Organics and sediments have been deposited in the Gulf for at least 70 million years.

Oil is the byproduct of the degradation of organic matter.

My understanding is that, to some extent, its actually a renewable resource. (Which isn't to say that is sustainably renewable).

Gold's been argusing this for quite some time now, and it has been tested in Sweden on the Siljan ring, a meteorite impact structure dated at 360 million years ago. The structure occurs in the Precambrian basement rocks. Now, Gold argued that it was perfect to drill for oil there. They had some drilling problems, and lost drilling mud into the formation. They encountered gaseous and liquid hydrocrabons, producing up to 85 barrels of oil. However, as they lost circulation in the well, they added diesel fuel to the drilling mud. Apparently, the diesel mixed with the caustic soda in the drilling mud.

Sometimes (often, actually) the best response to name-calling is no response at all.

I think those who are close to McCain personally would probably tell you that he has no problem "denigrating" people, as necessary. He ultimately attacked Romney when he had to, earlier in the campaign.

Don't worry, there is still plenty of time remaining in this campaign for things to get real negative.

Bakken sounds promising from the data I've seen, and I would suspect we could get a decent amount of petroleum out of the shales using the most modern technology. There are oil wells in that part of North Dakota already.

I think the NASA mission to look for water on Mars is racist. Why are the looking for water on some planet that's millions of miles away? What's wrong with all the water we have right here? Well, what's wrong, from the point of view of George Bush and his racist NASA goons, is that we have to share the water on Earth with people of color.

I'd also point out that the Rover "probing" for water is reminiscent of the rape of black women by white slavemasters over the centuries.

Now, it's true that the Mars Rover doesn't look like all those other presidents on our dollar bills, but that doesn't change the fundamentally racist nature of this mission.

McCain could take the high road - and lose. Do you think Obama won't cry "racist" if McCain is nice to him? This is going to be a brutal election. The Obamessiah is going to cry "racism" at every step of the way. Obviously you don't resort to real racism, but you do fight.

Of course, and you can simply point to the fact that your opponent is crying racism when it is clearly not there.

re: #265 looking closely

Sometimes (often, actually) the best response to name-calling is no response at all.

I think those who are close to McCain personally would probably tell you that he has no problem "denigrating" people, as necessary. He ultimately attacked Romney when he had to, earlier in the campaign.

Don't worry, there is still plenty of time remaining in this campaign for things to get real negative.

This "celebrity" ad was just a little teensy testing jab thrown in the first round of fight to test your opponent. Obama's quick invoking of the race card is a pretty good indicator of how susceptible he's likely to be.

True. McCain is nasty. Even confonted with the video proof that Romney did not say what McCain accused him of, he would not back off.

This is cool: Total eclipse of sun as seen from plane at 27 000ft

A total eclipse is utterly awesome!
We watched the one here in 1999 - incredible, the waiting, the darkness, the dogs getting scared, the birds not singing, the creeping cold - and then - there was light again, and warmth.
Indescribable.

Enjoy it while you can people. Obama has already promised to cut NASA's budget by between a third and a half, under the theory that as we are already 5 years ahead of any other country's space program it's time to divert its money into something really useful. Such as universal pre-k. As far as he's concerned it’s a win/win situation. First, it's an attack on the theory of American exceptionalism and second it enlarges the government and pours money into his biggest supporter, the NEA. What's not to like?

It appears that Rep. Culberson is video taping it, but it's not streaming video. Maybe we will see something posted later. From C-SPAN's site:

GOP Remain on the Floor
Today

The U.S. House adjourned for a 5-week summer break earlier today, but House Republican lawmakers stayed behind to talk about rising energy costs and gas prices. Republicans said they stayed behind to talk because House Democrats refused to allow them votes on their energy proposals. The House returns for legislative business on Monday, Sept. 8.

I don't think this tactic is going to work well for those on the non-drilling side.

In Italian Bensonhurst Brooklyn where I grew up, and all other little Italian communities throughout the northeast (properly called 'the old neighborhood' by those who spent childhoods there, then moved on to the 'burbs), the best water ices are made in the local Italian bakeries.

The lemon ice is to die for on a torrid summer day, with a load of fresh squeezed tart lemon juice, pith, pulp, and even an occasional pit. I'll never forget those drippy ices packed into white paper pastry cups - no commercial ice can compare!

Off topic: I'm usually pretty brief but this is a subject that's pretty dear to me so just scroll down if not interested. Sorry for taking up all the space and thank you for indulging me.

I think the meaning of life is to survive, strive and thrive, which means expanding the family of man beyond cradle Earth. Whether on not you believe it's a coincidence, our planetary neighborhood is setup almost like it was designed to welcome us into the cosmos with the Moon and then Mars being the first steps on the ladder, each progressively more challenging to reach. The moon is only a few days from us like the outstretched hands of a loving mother urging us to take our first steps but it's got very little promise for an extra-terrestrial paradise. Kind of like our first college dorm, it's a good starting point but you probably wouldn't want to live there forever. Mars is a little more challenging to get to, a few months instead of days, but it's got everything you need to make Earth II when you get there. It's so like Earth we can actually use the atmosphere to break our fall saving precious fuel. The day just happens to be about 1 hour different than Earth, almost like a message to us. "Hey! You cyclic based beings! We're all set up for you with a 23 hour day! We've got water, sunlight for power, raw materials for planting gardens under glass, that is, a 95.3% carbon dioxide, 2.7% nitrogen atmosphere. In order to carry on photosynthesis, green plants need a supply of carbon dioxide and a means of disposing of oxygen. In other words, after carbon dioxide and nitrogen, plants need an oxygen toilet and guess what, humans are great oxygen toilets. We actually breathe the stuff. It's also got enough gravity to hold stuff down but not enough to keep us from moving lots of construction material for a fraction of the effort. Moving construction material is the hardest part of construction, something we'd be doing a lot of, all the time, forever. This would discourage intellectuals from making the trip which would be nice.

Mars would look one big shopping mall when inhabited by man. Ok, man, woman, hermaphrodites, tran sexuals and trans genders for any media matters spies reading this. (By the way, F you Media Matters) Everything would be contained in buildings to shield us from the environment which is how we live now anyway. We don't go to work at the park and sit at our desks under a tree. The only difference is we couldn't open the door and walk outside without the right gear on without dying. Sort of like those who live or work in two or more story high buildings.

We'd bring our dogs and cats certainly, but the cockroach or any other pest we don't like would never make it. It would, by design, be a very effective functional society because wars fought with something as low tech as sledge hammers up there could wipe everybody out. (Bust the other guys windows, he busts yours, mutually assured destruction at unthinkably low prices) War wouldn't be affordable in such a tenuous environment and man, woman, hermaphrodites, tran sexuals and trans genders being so adaptable, peace would reign forever.

Mars would be our second chance to get it right and the harsh challenges there would create a motivated and bonded group that would most likely be made up of the smartest and most talented of all the various races, creeds and colors of Earth sick of putting up with knuckle dragging dumb-asses of all races, creeds and colors back there on "the old planet".

I'm sure at some point the Martians would look down at it's ancestors on Earth with fond tolerance, sort of the way we view Europe.

re: #59 jaunte

If there are Martian bacteria out there, I wonder what they've learned to eat.

Well, we must assume that after billions of years of evolution, the heat of the sun together with water and the large fraction of carbon dioxide in the Martian atmosphere will certainly have created anaerobic Martian bacteria that can metabolize the ferrous iron crustal rocks (and derivative soils) to produce magnetite. Another, possibility that might explain the low fraction of oxygen in the Martian atmosphere is the possibility that bacteria reduced ferric into ferrous oxide. If, as a few scientists speculate, that petroleum is the result of inorganic processes deep within a planet, the petroleum could also act as a source of energy for Martian bacteria.

Naturally, these bacteria easily evolved photosynthetic processes adapted to Mars similar to the Terran algal Protococcus, which resulted in a green hue and why Mars would have been called the green planet, but . . .

Millions of years ago, several large asteroids slammed into Mars, cracking it's thin crust and releasing enough submartian water (analogous to the subterranean water found under Beijing and the Sinai) to flood the planet. Subsequent volcanic activity completed the extinction of life on Mars, and the remaining water combined with the volcanic iron and oxygen or evaporated off the surface of the planet.

Because this disaster happened relatively recently in geologic terms, perhaps 60 to 400 million years ago, evolutionary processes have not yet formed new life on Mars.

Wow, writing science fiction is fun!

Don't life supporting planets have to have liquid water existent? This ice water will just sublime to gas, right?

re: #453 wiffersnapper

Don't life supporting planets have to have liquid water existent? This ice water will just sublime to gas, right?

Yes, under current conditions. But it's now considered likely that water in its liquid state was present on Mars in the past. See [Link: www.nineplanets.org...] .

"There is very clear evidence of erosion in many places on Mars including large floods and small river systems. At some time in the past there was clearly some sort of fluid on the surface. Liquid water is the obvious fluid but other possibilities exist. There may have been large lakes or even oceans; the evidence for which was strenghtened by some very nice images of layered terrain taken by Mars Global Surveyor and the mineralology results from MER Opportunity. Most of these point to wet episodes that occurred only briefly and very long ago; the age of the erosion channels is estimated at about nearly 4 billion years. However, images from Mars Express released in early 2005 show what appears to be a frozen sea that was liquid very recently (maybe 5 million years ago). Confirmation of this interpretation would be a very big deal indeed! (Valles Marineris was NOT created by running water. It was formed by the stretching and cracking of the crust associated with the creation of the Tharsis bulge.)"

455 MadJadBad  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:07:45am

To me, this is about as exciting as finding definitive proof that the surface of the sun is really, really hot. Fluvial (running water) erosion features were identified on Mars many years ago, but I guess that didn't qualify as proof.

456 MadJadBad  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 9:07:46am

Sorry, but I gotta mini-rant.
Why is NASA hyping the search for potential signs of life on Mars? The White House is Briefed: Phoenix About to Announce "Potential For Life" on Mars (via slashdot).
Finding a live Martian microbe would be a great scientific discovery, but in practical terms, it would only result in sparking a lot of philosophical debate. I'd rather see them focus their resources on projects that would have a more immediate impact on our lives. Things like global communication, new or improved energy sources, harvesting of extra-terrestrial resources, commercial applications of space stations, etc. Things that would actually save or improve human life.
