9 Occasional Reader  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:07:09pm

Hm.

Mixed feelings.

McCain needs to start hammering Obama on his empty ideas, and highlighting his own. It's hard to win an election by simply running as "I'm not the other guy".

10 HelloDare  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:07:10pm

Big fat zero.

That's not the letter O at the front of his name. It's a zero.

I would think so.....it's so self-contained ...... using Obama's own words to paint the picture.

What a Friday! The McCain ad, the testicular fortitude the Republicans have shown on the House floor. And to think the day still is not over yet.

20 Killgore Trout  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:09:15pm

It's pretty good and I'm glad McCain's camp is mocking the Obama brand but they need to mix things up some. If they keep doing this every few days they're going to appear obsessed. They need to mix in a few more policy based ads.

21 Diamond Bullet  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:09:38pm

I agree- McCain needs to do an ad on energy. He'd make inroads telling Americans he wants to drill here and cut gas taxes.

27 really grumpy big dog Johnson  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:12:09pm

Many celebrities missing the point and bitching about McCain's Celeb Ad.

Still nothing about why 'The One's' energy and tax policies look like they were written by wishful thinking airheads.

35 karmic_inquisitor  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:13:18pm

The Obama campaign has already responded -

Basically McCain is childish while 51,000 people lost their jobs and only Obama has solutions because he will bribe us all with $1000.

Pretty lame response.

36 looking closely  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:14:29pm

Snarky.

Hit him where it hurts!

37 karmic_inquisitor  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:15:01pm

Here is the Obama camp response

"It’s downright sad that on a day when we learned that 51,000 Americans lost their jobs, a candidate for the presidency is spending all of his time and the powerful platform he has on these sorts of juvenile antics," said spokesman Hari Sevugan. "Senator McCain can keep telling everyone how ‘proud’ he is of these political stunts which even his Republican friends and advisors have called ‘childish’, but Barack Obama will continue talking about his plan to jumpstart our economy by giving working families $1,000 of immediate relief."

As pretentious as anything in the ad.

38 JammieWearingFool  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:15:12pm

Smears!

39 Dad O' Blondes  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:15:14pm

That's the "Daisy" ad for the 2008 Presidential election.

This messaging crystallizes all the reasons why voting FOR Obama will lead to ruin.

I agree- McCain needs to do an ad on energy. He'd make inroads telling Americans he wants to drill here and cut gas taxes.

I'm hoping they'll use what is happening today in the house, coupled with the $1,000 bribe promised to each tax payer by the BO.

BO needs to say what he wants to do - then McCain can lay into him on his politics - so far there is a big O where BO#s politics need to be.

104 Kosh's Shadow  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 2:30:56pm

Drive by post.

I think McCain will look lame with ads purely attacking Obama like this.
I'd prefer he worked on the issues. The problem there, though, is that people have been brainwashed by the MSM to believe the BS that BO produces could work.
Obama wants the US to get rid of nuclear weapons (although he said he'd keep some as long as other countries did); too many people think that nukes are bad, when we would have had at least one more full-blown world war without them. (And besides, Obama is so naive that Putin and Amadmanonjihad could say they've gotten rid of nukes, and then, after Obama does, say "Look what we found!")
Maybe the ad is the best that can be done. I don't know; regular ads don't work on me that well, and they obviously work on most people, or we wouldn't have all these brands; everything would be generic.

Off for dinner.

They forgot to mention how long the appropriate mourning period for the 51,000 should be.

I think McCain needs to start showing ads featuring the reasons people should vote FOR him, rather than going so negative about Obama. McCain is coming across as a grumpy old guy who is too much on the defensive - the One ad just shows that his admen have a great sense of humor.
When the Dems say that we shouldn't drill because we won't get any oil for 10 years or so, why not point out that if the Arab world starts to believe that we really mean what we say, they'll lower the price anyway to dampen our desire to move away from them. $1000? That's it? For some families that wouldn't last a month. For others- it won't eve cover the house payment. That's chump change to a lot of American families. Man- that's really out of touch.

Hey, a thousand bucks is a thousand bucks. That'll buy enough beer to forget about Obama for a few weeks, maybe.

But a more hare-brained gov't run wealth re-allocation scheme is difficult to imagine. The gov't should not be in the business of handing out Federal checks to people, period. If its got so much extra cash lying around to do that, let it reduce taxes instead, so that the people who are actually FILLING the coffers derive the benefit.

As already mentioned, the increased Obama payroll, income, and capital gains taxes are going to cost many Americans a LOT more than that $1000. (I've done the math for myself, and it ain't pretty).

If anyone from the McCain campaign is reading this, please put up a web "widget" that will let a surfer put in their income, and how much extra cash in taxes an Obama Presidency would cost them over four years.

And I wonder how much accumulated wealth in peoples 401k's and other funds people are gonna lose when the Oil companies go into the tank after an excess profits tax?

From page 17 of ECONOMICS IN ONE LESSON by Henry Hazlitt:

"From this aspect, therefore, the whole of economics can be reduced to a single lesson, and that lesson can be reduced to a single sentence. The art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups."

Needless to say Democrats never practice real economics.

That's a problem.

Another one is that Obama's increased taxes on "only rich Americans" are going to cause NON-rich Americans to lose their jobs when the rich ones who create the wealth and jobs are unable to create new ones.

Higher taxes are a recipe for unemployment and economic stagnation.

Gallup Daily: Race Tied at 44%

This is not much different from the results reported in Gallup Poll Daily tracking on Thursday, when the two were nearly tied with 45% for Obama and 44% for McCain. However, it is a substantial turnaround from earlier this week when Obama held a statistically significant lead coming off his high-profile trip to Europe, Afghanistan, and the Middle East.

Obama and McCain were closely matched in each of the three nights of interviewing included in today's result, with neither candidate ahead by more than three percentage points. This suggests that the recent surge in voter support for Obama has truly subsided.

The contrast between Obama's recent advantage over McCain (ranging from six to nine points) and today's result is particularly notable because this is McCain's strongest showing in over a month. The last time Gallup found the race exactly tied was in late June. By contrast, in the weeks just prior to Obama's overseas trip, he had led the race by an average of four points.

Like I said, I like the ad, but he needs to balance it out with pumping himself up. He should not have put out two ads within such a sort time period that are all about Obama. Best Obama Facts

The living heroic legend that is Barack Obama has already broken the pop-culture record of Baghdad Bob and is now approaching that of Chuck Norris and Vladimir Putin. When even Obama's official campaign is forced to launch a fact-checking website to keep his runaway aura under control, you just know that Obama's public persona has developed a life of its own and is resisting efforts to catch it and put it on Ritalin. We thought that the best way to take control of the situation would be by using Obama's own patented method of hopeful approach to reality. So we built a radically different website: it looks like Obama's fact-checking site, only instead of chasing cowardly facts and arguing old truths that are tarnished and tedious, we invent new,sparkling-clean truths that are exciting and heroic. The beauty of this approach is that when new truths become old and tarnished, they can be easily thrown under the bus and replaced with newer and better heroic truths, ensuring Obama's glorious march towards a higher metaphysical plane of unstoppable service to humankind.

Nothing ruins satire like an on-the-nose bludgeoning, and nothing ruins a political ad like quotes clearly taken out of context.

Good job, McCain marketing team. Why don't you just vote Obama, next? That's the only further effort remaining.

Link found on Instapundit:

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker's Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

"You're not covering this, are you?" complained one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans "morons" for staying on the floor.

Update: The Capitol Police are now trying to kick reporters out of the press gallery above the floor, meaning we can't watch the Republicans anymore. But Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) is now in the gallery talking to reporters, so the cops have held off for a minute. Clearly, Democrats don't want Republicans getting any press for this episode. GOP leaders are trying to find other Republicans to rotate in for Blunt so reporters aren't kicked out.

“Obama simply asks that big oil companies contribute a reasonable share of the windfall profits they receive from high oil prices over the next five years to pay for emergency assistance for families right now,” the campaign says

re: #348 buzzsawmonkey

Not that two wrongs make a right, but Obama-wan-Kenobi has been making capital for weeks with that "100 years in Iraq" line, which was totally distorted and taken out of context.

If McCain gets a little of his own back with this, I for one do not care.

I did, frankly, think that the self-mockery which Obama displayed in the "light will come down" quote was somewhat attractive--but put in context with his other bits of Messianic self-image, it looks much less so, as it should. One of the best ways of lying is to tell the unvarnished truth in an unexpected tone, and Obama's "self-mockery" is, I think, an example of that--of him displaying his Messianic self-image in a tone where he knows he can get away with it.

Yes, excellent points.

UPDATE 7: It's over.

Right at the stroke of five Georgia Rep. Tom Price announced that House Republicans were ending their impromptu protest on the floor of the chamber, ending a five-plus hour rebellion with a round of "God Bless America."

The assembled tourists, aides and members in the chamber gave Price and his compatriots a standing ovation. They left the chamber to shouts of "USA! USA! USA!"

It might have only worked because Huckabee was working as a spoiler (knowing he could not win) drawing votes away from Romney, and because there might have been a Dem primary crossover-vote push to give McCain to Repubs, hoping to split the base.

Funny and effective until the tagline. Please stop using that lame 'not ready to lead' argument!

It doesn't work for several reasons:

1. It implies Obama will be ready sometime in the future, when he's a little older, like in 4 or 8 years.
2. It diverts attention from what Obama actually stands for, his radical socialist ideology.
3. Younger voters don't care, they identify with his inexperience. Not being ready is what makes Obama the "change" candidate.

More good stuff from McCain's team:

McCain Camp Compares Times Editorial Board to 'the Average Daily Kos Diarist'

"If the shareholders of the New York Times ever wonder why the paper's ad revenue is plummeting and its share price tanking, they need look no further than the hysterical reaction of the paper's editors to any slight, real or imagined, against their preferred candidate. This campaign has never engaged in 'racially tinged attacks,' and the Obama campaign conceded as much yesterday in a statement clarifying that "Barack Obama in no way believes that the McCain campaign is using race as an issue."

That the Times made this allegation in a blog post rather than running it on the editorial page indicates that they either knew the charge was bogus or they didn't have the nerve to make their case in full view of the public. But in their new role as bloggers, the paper's editors seem to have all the intelligence and reason of the average Daily Kos diarist sitting at home in his mother's basement and ranting into the ether between games of dungeons and dragons. They also have about as much care for the facts--the "board" has already been forced to append a correction."

Note: these are low resolution and the above address is a guess only.

List occupation as Accounting and Employer as Acounter

Could potentially be an expatriate and not a foreign citizen.

Leadership comes from an inner drive and a a fellowship with exprienced leaders. It also comes from having screwed up. A leader knows how to make the right decision when the unfactful are yelling at the door.

People fail on the rise to leadership. Leaders new to power hold the reigns poorly due to lack of experience. Others hold them poorly due to lack of integrity.

Obama has no experience. He will blunder and fail and have to rely on the strong images of his past. Rev Wright, Ayers.... etc. That is where he will go to steady himself. He doesn't deny it. The more he weighs himself as the candidate of color instead of the candidate of the people is the circle he is drawing around himself.

I would think so.....it's so self-contained ...... using Obama's own words to paint the picture.

Ridicule is the best way to show Obama for what he is truly. Frank Capra directed a series of films during WW2 that used The Italian and German statements as pro Allied propaganda. When asked the best way to expose Hitler and Mussolini, Capra said to use legitimate but unexpurgated quotes from them. It worked brilliantly and the series was called: "Why We Fight". Ridicule renders pomposity,,,ridiculous.

Man. That is one terrible advertisement.

Nothing ruins satire like an on-the-nose bludgeoning, and nothing ruins a political ad like quotes clearly taken out of context.

Good job, McCain marketing team. Why don't you just vote Obama, next? That's the only further effort remaining.

I must admit, I was very disappointed to read a couple of minutes ago that my favorite quote from the ad is out of context.

The whole "A Light will come down, from somewhere" clip is supposedly in response to a question or comment about conservatives making fun of him as "the one".

and that makes sense given what he says.

=(

It was still a heck of a laugh though, and I'm sure it is going to be an effective one.

Obama's second language is in soundbites, so he should have known better. Because he's arrogant, condescending, and because he's deliberately posed on many occasions with his head in a halo, I seriously doubt this was a punchline.

He had this coming.

It's a great ad because its FUNNY; it's entertaining; people will watch it, talk about it and chuckle. That's all. Let's keep our sense of humor.

It's not the whole campaign. It's just poking fun at the grandiosity of Obama and his star-struck worshipers in the media (and in Hollywood.) And . . . how more effectively can you attack the star-struck worshipers than with ridicule? The McCain campaign has got to go after the grandiosity and the branding that has made Obama "cool." I think ridicule is the best way. I've been using it for weeks with the throngs of 19 year olds coming through my house, and I find it works even coming from me-a 59 year old Mom- who would have thought!

It's GREAT! Go McCain. He has hit upon THE answer-- laughter and good humoured ridicule of the OBVIOUS idiocy of the self-absorption of "Barack MILLHOUSE Obama" (as Mark Levin calls him.)

LMAO

I agree completely and great nic by the way.

Charleton Heston as Moses was a perfect finale. If McCain can make people laugh at Obama he will yank the bloom off the rose and remove the Glo-bama halo for ever.

Never Change Maverick (except about illegal immigration)

the problem with sarcastic political commercials is there are too many people too dumb to get sarcasm (how many people have to use sarcasm tags here, for example?). Thanks to McCains ad, there are probable hundreds, and more probably thousands, of sub 90 IQ people out there just now paying attention to politics being told that Jackass Obama is, yes, indeed, the Messiah...by the OPPOSITION, no less!

on a slightly more serious note, does anybody else here beside me not liking the negative tone of the early McCain ads? I'm not trying to single out McCain, because LOTS of politicians do this, and I'm not targeting negative campaigning, because LOTS of times it's justified and deserved.
but it seems to me if you spend ALL of your time badmouthing your opponent, it's because you have nothing good to say about yourself. I am far from a McCain supporter, but I hope he spends more time trumpeting his decades of public service more than Obamas lack of it. I hope he spends more time demonstrating his military service more than Obamas lack of it. I hope he spends more time showing his support of the surge in Iraq than Obamas opposition to it. I'm not saying he can't do BOTH, because nobody says you can't be positive and negative at the same time, but if you only got thirty seconds to a minute of time restricted to you in a political commercial on TV, try talking about yourself more than your opponent. just my two cents

Absolutely. Frackin'. Brilliant. Made a thrill run up my leg.

The sarcasm on this one cannot be missed. Even if someone is silly enough not to get the joke by the tone of the announcer, the Charlton
Heston Finale drives the point home with a great laugh and the silly obama seal.

I don't think this is negative campaining as much as lampooning Obama's nonsense. If McCain went negative and harped about taxes, gas or called O the communist he is one could call this negative.

It's humorous and uses Obama's own excessed againt him.

It wasn't "satire." It wasn't "childish." It wasn't "trivial."

It was ridicule, pure and simple, identifying the pomposity and stupidity of this rotten demagogue.

Good job, John. Give em hell!

It's fine. About time. The word is spreading on what a self absorbed loser obama is.

O ... M ... G !

You're serious - this is a for-real McCain ad!?! That's unreal! I thought I was gonna die laughing!

What a fantastic ad.

I'm missing most of the ads up here in Canada. While that's usually a good thing when it comes to political ads, I do wish I could see the good ones. Thanks for posting.

One of the funniest and best political advertisements I have ever seen in my 50 something years. I was literally laughing out loud when Heston jumped in with the trumpets.

If you don't think McCain is hitting home runs with this and "Celebrity" listen to the liberals in the media sputtering with outrage. I never thought McCain had it in him, but I'm actually starting to get mildly enthusiastic about him. He may go down swinging, but he is taking some damn good swings.

These ads are only partly directed at Obama. They are really aimed at the media which has turned him in to a celebrity and a Messiah. The media hasn't figured that out yet. And neither has the Obama Campaign. Their expressions of anger and outrage simply drive home the point of the adverts.

Hilarious. I loved it.

Obamassiah for President? Savior?

First of a huge series! Let us pray! Almost Simpsonian in its balloon bursting wit!

Remeber, too, fellow lizards that libs take themselves VERY seriously and cannot bear mockery and scathing humor. It literally unhinges them. (Just another way libs and jihadis are alike in many ways, BTW.)

The ending ruined the message. What a lousy conclusion. It fell completely flat. "Obama may be the one. But is he ready to lead?" That is stupid. Why pose that stupid question at the end? Why do they accept the premise that "Obama may be the one" and then pose the question as being merely whether he is ready to lead? I don't like the way they are handled this. Is it just me?

ROTFLMAO..... Sorry dude, it's you. The blatantly obvious sarcasm in this ad is that Obama very much not only is not the one, but is not a leader either... lol...lol...lol... Thats sarcasm thick enough to cut with a dull butter knife.
