GOP 'Uprising' a 'Historic Event'?

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 3:41:46 pm PDT

You’ve probably heard about the GOP’s “uprising” in the House of Representatives this afternoon; here’s an account at Politico: House Dems turn out the lights but GOP keeps talking.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the Democrats adjourned the House, turned off the lights and killed the microphones, but Republicans are still on the floor talking gas prices.

Minority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and other GOP leaders opposed the motion to adjourn the House, arguing that Pelosi’s refusal to schedule a vote allowing offshore drilling is hurting the American economy. They have refused to leave the floor after the adjournment motion passed at 11:23 a.m., and they are busy bashing Pelosi and her fellow Democrats for leaving town for the August recess.

At one point, the lights went off in the House and the microphones were turned off in the chamber, meaning Republicans were talking in the dark. But as Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz..) was speaking, the lights went back on and the microphones were turned on shortly afterward.

But C-SPAN, which has no control over the cameras in the chamber, has stopped broadcasting the House floor, meaning no one was witnessing this except the assembled Republicans, their aides, and one Democrat, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), who has now left.

Only about a half-dozen Republicans were on the floor when this began, but the crowd has grown to about 20, according to Patrick O’Connor.

“This is the people’s House,” said Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.). “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

“You’re not covering this, are you?” complained one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor.

I’m getting emails from GOP lists trumpeting a “historic event.” Maybe I’m missing something, but this seems to be just a publicity stunt. I thought “historic events” were supposed to actually ... you know ... accomplish something.

I mean, it’s a cool idea and all, to publicize the Dems’ lack of action, but earth-shattering? Not so much.

About time the repubs grew a pair. But way too late to do any good.

You're not missing anything, Charles. It is a publicity stunt, but one I'm glad to see them pulling. It's about damn time, and unfortunate they only seem to fight for conservative ideals in election years.

Update: A GOP staffer just informed me that post-adjournment protests by the minority party are not unprecedented. The Democrats did it back in 1995, when the Republicans were in control. Democrats placed a big photo in the speaker's chair of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) wearing a diaper. Republicans note they are being more respectful this time.

That is also from the Politico... self-corrected!

7 Catttt  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 3:45:52pm

What they're trying to do is draw LOTS of attention to the fact that Pelosi and the Dems are actively trying to keep energy expensive. I have no problem with that.

Great move, and it demonstrates the Democrat goal in excellent fashion. As Congress has been powerless the past two years since their achieving majority, so too would they make America.

They are the party of energy stasis, they are the party of weak defense, they are the party of grabbing guns. They want America powerless in all ways possible.

15 TheWasteLand  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 3:48:44pm

At least they're doing something. And this should make excellent material for campaign ads - the Presidential election is not the only election this fall.

16 USBeast  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 3:48:46pm

Let's say it's part of a historic event. The Dems are going home to face an electorate that has to deal with the real world and knows how that real world works. I know my rep is going to get an earfull.

Right at the stroke of 5, Georgia Rep. Tom Price announced that House Republicans were stopping their impromptu protest on the floor of the chamber, ending a five-plus-hour mock rebellion with a round of "God Bless America."

The assembled tourists, aides and members in the chamber gave Price and his compatriots a standing ovation. They left the chamber to shouts of "USA! USA! USA!"

I'll give 'em a "B" for the effort

re: #9 Occasional Reader

I don't have a problem with them drawing attention to this either, and I can understand hyping this to the base to rally the troops, but "historic event"?

It's a publicity stunt- a great one- but let's not be fooled by overblown rhetoric.

21 geata  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 3:51:19pm

It's not a historic event and it is a publicity stunt but its something that needed to be done. It's time to hold Pelosi's and Reid's feet to the fire. It's time to make a big an issue as possible over the Democrats unconscionable inaction on oil drilling.

It is not an uprising.

It is not a historical event.

It is a staged event, albeit one that is needed, but should have been a horse ridden day in and day out for at least a year now.

54 TempestMan  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 4:04:13pm

I agree with #26...publicity stunt or not, this needs to be done!

And at the very least, it exposes to more and more people how completely out-of-touch the Democrats are...I have used this very issue (of the need for energy independence for both price relief and even more importantly, for national security!) to very successfully influence friends, family, and co-workers to seriously rethink their blind devotion to always voting Democratic...so if nothing else, this will help to keep the stupendously unqualified Obama away from POTUS, and maybe even get more of the Democratic reps and senators out of there! :)

But historical? How?

Hope springs eternal.

I like to think this could finally be like "the nuclear option" discussed regarding judges, a couple of weeks ago.

Or, it could simply cost the donkeys a bunch of seats, make them look useless and ridiculous - a sin that the Bush family had previously reserved for themselves, the past twenty years. Arrogant, as we like to say about The Big Ob.

So, what if the Republican House calls themself into session, passes a bill, sends it right to the White House, and Bush signs it? Blatently illegal, of course, but it's not a law of nature that the constitution must be followed, and something is better than nothing, and right now, the Democrats are betting on nothing.

Would that be historic enough for ya?

re: #61 Miss Molly

At least someone decided to make a show of doing something that might get some notice. I only have Dem representaties where I live and never once will they answer a letter or e-mail because they are just way to important and special.

Don't feel bad, I used live in Cynthia McKinney's district. Got the monthly newsletter that never featured a picture of a white male, and few white females. Not one e-mail ever answered by staff. I saw the writing on the wall and moved and never regretted it. The northern section of the county two weeks back voted to create their own city and succeed from county government for the same issue. A black dominated government that refused to address issues affecting the northern majority white population, and of course northern DeKalb was the "cash cow" of the county. All the county had to do was go up to north DeKalb, hold some town-hall meetings and ask what they wanted in north DeKalb. Instead DeKalb commissioners elected to allow north DeKalb to succeed because they do not care about majority white sections except as a revenue source. This is going to hurt DeKalb county badly and north DeKalb citizens are about to get socked with the high cost and taxes of building a new government from scratch. These guys could be my next employer, and I am not coming cheap.....

/kind of hard to get something done when the Bonkeys control Congress

Not only that, but the new activist face of bureaucrat Washington - the one that was able to get rid of Bush 'cleanup' appointees Porter Goss and John Bolton so easily - would have presented challenges even to the Gipper.

Yes, we definitely need a great communicator and someone who knows how to talk to the people providing the war's blood and treasure, to educate them as to the vital importance of the Iraq front. Reagan would've been on the tube every six weeks in the evening, instead of the way Bush gives major policy speeches... always at 3 in the afternoon on weekdays, at some elite think tank or military commencement. Nowadays, the new activist media would probably not carry evening fireside talks, unless the pres pre-empted regular programming. And the current MSM anchors would call the President a fascist for doing that.

We have to have a leader who knows how to take advantage of the Bully Pulpit. I'm not counting on McCain to have that strength - though heaven knows he drew on his innate strength when he needed it.

From Jamie McIntyre and Mike Mount

Super Scary, huh?

The total amount leaked while the sub was in port in Guam, Japan and Hawaii was less than a half of a microcurie (0.0000005 curies), or less than what is found in a 50-pound bag of lawn and garden fertilizer, the officials said.

Lately? They have been neutered for years! They were Pu**y whipped neutered show dogs when they were in power. Whenever Kennedy said "jump", John McCain and his gang of 14 would get out their whips and ask their democrat masters how high and proceed to beat the other Republicans into submission.

Also, Gandhi's non-violent revolution against England was a publicity stunt and it worked.

Much of the fight against Apartheid in SA was a publicity stunt.

The Chinese kid in front of the tank was a publicity stunt.

History, many times, turns on individuals and groups making statements in lieu of action, as a warning.

They are basically press releases saying, "This far, and no further."

Maybe I’m missing something, but this seems to be just a publicity stunt. I thought “historic events” were supposed to actually ... you know ... accomplish something.

Charles: not really. Sometimes historic events are unrecognizable at the time they occur because they only catalyze or precipitate a series of other events that accomplish something.

Best example: a woman on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, is too tired to comply with the driver's command to move to the back of the bus. She's arrested, same as lots of other people who committed the same infraction over a period of years. But this time, due to the ripeness of conditions in the society around her, she becomes the catalyst for a bus boycott, which becomes part of a series of events that change the course of history.

But every time she's praised as a history-making heroine, she explains, "I was just too tired to change seats."

Erm, I wouldn't rest on that example too much, at least as you describe it. Rosa Parks wasn't just "too tired to move", her actions were part of a civil disobedience strategy that was planned in advance. There's nothing wrong with that, of course; but it's truly weird the way the "she was just some lady whose feet hurt and was too tired to move" mythology has become entrenched in our culture.

Workers at the Tyson Foods poultry processing plant in Shelbyville will no longer have a paid day off on Labor Day but will instead be granted the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr.

Ayman al-Zawahiri - the second most powerful leader in al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden's No. 2 - may be critically wounded and possibly dead, CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan reports exclusively.

CBS News has obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from sources in Pakistan, which urgently requests a doctor to treat al-Zawahiri. He's believed to be somewhere in Pakistan's remote tribal areas of Pakistan.

The letter refers to Sheikh Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri by name - and says that he is in "severe pain" and his "injuries are infected."

It is reportedly written by local Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, whose signature and seal are visible on the letter.

The Taliban logo and the Mehsud's seal have been confirmed by experts as legitimate.

It really depends on how the Republicans now capitalize on this. If they go and start a set of campaign ads that show the price of the gasoline the guy is pumping into his modest car go up and up and up and up and then hit with the punch line that the Republicans wanted to act on this in the House of Representatives by authorizing offshore drilling but the response of the Democrats was to turn the lights off and go on vacation and then show a picture of Pelosi's jet burning its bazillion gallons of jet fuel, they could have a deadly ad on their hands. A ad with the phone ringing at 3 AM in the morning and the Democrats not answering because they are on vacation might be effective too. A replay of the statement that gas has to go to $10 a gallon interleaved into all of it would piss folks off against the Democraps in no small measure.

Today the Republicans have to carpe the diem of the Democraps shutting down things while the country is in crisis. If they do, there will be some toasted Democraps come the election.

re: #133 godfrey

More than anything else, this event shows that Americans are, in fact, interested in seeing the usual Congressional bullshit routine broken. To see informed decision-makers speaking plainly about important issues off the record is riveting. They're breaking free, and don't tell me there isn't a part of every American that would respond to that sight with a Yes!. Deep down, enough of us still love freedom, not Euro-style parliamentary procedure, elitist horsesh*t, and closing down discussion because someone says so. God help us if we're ever confronted with that and back down like cowards. I want to see more of this. A stunt like this can reveal things. Time to make the most of it.

If you pardon me for repeating myself:

We have reached the end of the era of politics as usual.

In the other party we are no longer confronted with fellow citizens with legitimate concerns but with a barbarian horde screaming for absolute power over all aspects of human life, demanding blind submission to doctrines that have no basis in reality, and the enforcement of policies that have been proven destructive to human life and civilized society. And when we raise rational objections to their dogmas and actions we are commanded to be silent and are subjected to punishment for disobedience. In every problem we face as a civilized nation the other party is either the primary cause or the primary aggravating factor of that problem.

The fact of the matter is that those who make up the membership of the other party are no longer our fellow citizens, they are our enemies.

Enemies of our Republic and Enemies of Human Kind in General.

We need to face up to the fact that our laws and customs have been corrupted by our enemies and now form a virtual Gordian Knot which binds us on a path that leads to our destruction.

We need to cut the knot. And we need to do it now.

I was in a bit of a foul mood when I originally wrote that but it had to be said.

174 sdmoderate  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 5:03:52pm

The event while staged was historical to a point. The whole thing was documented from the house floor by Rep. John Culberson using Twitter so those of us following it got blow by blow accounts. The wave of the future? Maybe, but cool just the same

192 auldtrafford  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 5:24:42pm

I think it was historic; first time the Repubs have made a significant attempt to get media attention for any kind of conservative viewpoint. The Rosa Parks example isn't bad - sure it was staged, but it was staged for the purpose of accomplishing what it did accomplish. Hell, it's historic enough that a few of them are willing to stay on the floor long enough to at least try.

You won't get anywhere if you don't try. But if you do ... who knows? Anyway, it pissed Pelosi off, and that's good enough for me right there.

193 Palandine  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 5:27:09pm

Cute stunt. It's easy to be score points when the opponent has left the playing field.

Where were these cojones when it MATTERED? Where is the Republican filibuster.

Go home, Congress. We're sick of seeing you. The country will do fine without you.

By the way, in one of last night's dead threads, I said I'd cash the check if Congress was stupid enough to follow Obama's lead and hand out another round of checks. It's no solution to the problem, but I'll always take my tax money back. Today, Obama said he'd fund that bribe by taking away the oil companies' profits.

I'm not a communist, and I don't receive stolen goods. If that particular act of socialism passed, I would find out which companies were taxed, divide the bribe equally, and mail it back to the rightful owners.

Obama hits bottom, keeps digging.

I would also suggest that when the Republicans run an ad that has Pelosi's jet in it, they equate the amount of fuel used to the number of miles an "average" family sedan could drive on it. Sort of the $500 a month to heat ol Al's indoor swimming pool and all. Then they cut to BO talking about pumping up tires and getting "tune-ups". They then cut to an auto mechanic that remarks that cars no longer require tune-ups except for 50K spark plug changes and how this guy does not even understand a car.

Washington, D.C. (August 1, 2008) - A number of media organizations have incorrectly referred to “C-SPAN cameras” being turned off and not providing televised coverage of the GOP House members’ post-adjournment protest on energy policy being held on the House floor on Friday afternoon. Please note that cameras in the House chamber are under the control of the Speaker of the House and that all media organizations, including C-SPAN, wishing to cover events in the chamber must use the official House TV feed. No private media cameras are permitted in the House (or Senate) chambers.

So, I found the site that was tracking it and just as I was ready to step back over from complete and total disgust with these do-nothing dupes.....they called it quits. Of course, now we know they didn't do it on principal, they did it for publicity because if it was principal, all repubs would have found their way back to the floor and would have demanded Bush to call the session back on. Write to the White House, and pass on the e-mail address to all your friends. I did it today. If Bush gets enough outrage in his in box, maybe he'll have the nads to call Congress back into session!

The address is;
comments@whitehouse.gov

The letter format I used was;
Dear Mr. President,

I am asking all of my friends to write you and their senators and congressman to call Congress back into session to vote on Oil Drilling Legislation.

We the people will not tolerate defiance by Congress to enact reasonable Oil Drilling in the USA and on our Continental Shelf to ensure adequate future supplies of Oil and Gas to:

1. Aid in long term gas price stabalization.
2. Reduce dependence on oil from countries that are our sworn enemies.
3. Ensure that we have a strategic reserve in the ground that will endure a catastrophic event such as shutting down the Straights of Hormuz where the bulk of the worlds oil must flow.

CALL CONGRESS BACK INTO SESSION TODAY.

Then signed my name and town, state.

Everyone on this site should do the same, and pass the word to at least 10 of your friends. Queen Nancy can't get away with this!

237 jackfetch  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 6:57:43pm

Actually, the historic part of this event was what sparked it... namely the Dems gavelling out the session before everyone got their usual chance to make a speech to the empty chamber. You know those silly speeches into the record where the representative is alone except for the janitor, droning on because he knows no one is listening? Well, because a record number of Republicans signed up for those today (apparently about half of the entire delegation) Pelosi & Co. broke all precedent and tradition and gavelled the session closed early... the vote for adjournment was apparently much earlier, so they were just holding it ready for whenever they wanted to enforce it.

That's what sparked a few Republicans to demand their speech time... which rolled into more than a few and eventually a whole bunch. Meanwhile, Democrat aides ran about mouthing off in front of reporters about "morons" and how they couldn't let the Republicans have any press time. Add in the police being called to clear the gallery, and the various cameras, mics, and lights being turned off... and you've got this ridiculous, frantic, and very very Un-American afternoon for the Pelosi camp.

I just hope the new life in the Republican representatives takes hold and doesn't ebb away over the coming weeks.

It's only a publicity stunt if it gains publicity. It's nice to see C-SPAN showing their allegiance to the Dems by shutting off their feed while there is still action on the H.R. floor. Albeit out of session.

I've read alot of different interpretations of energy policies proposed by both sides in the last 2 days. 100% of them say that Democratics do not want to allow drilling in areas where there are known reserves. 50% of them (all from the left) say that Republicans only solution is to drill for more oil to fix the energy situation. That's a lie. I watched Mitch McConnell yesterday attempt to attach an AMENDMENT (that would be an addition to an existing bill) that would allow drilling in currently forbidden areas if and only if the avg. price per gallon of gasoline exceeded 4.50. That was denied. Then if the avg price hit 7.50. Democrat response? Denied. Finally if gasoline reached $10.00 per gallon. Denied again. If the Dems are so sure that their bill "as is" will be effective at relieving the "pain at the pump" then why not allow an amendment with a trigger that will never be pulled. My response? Jack Asses are running the show.

re: #251 The Other Les

We have to make it happen.

The problem there is the "we". When "we" is all the people, it won't happen - the foxes are all voting to have the lambs for dinner.

The American Revolution had fairly sparse support - maybe around 33%. Another 33% opposed it, and the rest didn't care a whole lot - but probably just wanted for "everyone to just get along".

In short - it won't happen through one-man-one-vote; the majority will always vote to pick-pocket the "lucky" few.

I see it going the way of the Soviet Union (we are, after all, pretty socialistic). Eventually, those who are paying the freight - just won't anymore.

I see it going the way of the Soviet Union (we are, after all, pretty socialistic). Eventually, those who are paying the freight - just won't anymore.

Tax Strike. That would be the first step.

257 kawfytawk  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:18:47pm

the thing of it is .....most people want a comprehensive plan....wind, solar, nuclear , oil, coal ...you name it...if it gives us independence from thugs like Chavez and the Saudis....I say lets do it all.

I mean what is wrong with going for all of it? this is obviously ripe for compromise

But shutting down the vote altogether is a slap in the face to us all. And I am spitting mad!

re: #256 The Other Les

Don't think so; not enough people with enough guts to do it at the same time (again - the masses won't strike, they're the winners).

What will do it is - like the USSR - when the Govt just tries to shovel out more than they take in. We're getting there real quick already with Social Security & Medi-whatever. Obama will get us there faster, but we'll get there.

We'll simply go bankrupt; rampant inflation, and it'll fold up.

That's an inevitable consequence of paying the freight for others. It just stops.

It's just a fact, proven throughout history, that Dems can't get through their thick heads.

re: #260 rightymouse

They believe "the wealthy" and the "evil corporations" are deep pockets that will always keep shovelling the money into the system. You're right - the Dems are not seeing what's happening to General Motors, Ford, etc. Obama's one of the absolute worst; he just won't get past Michelle's anger.

And the foreign investors won't bail us out. They'll finally just cash in their chips and decamp.

They'll see it, but it'll be too late - it's already too late, I think.

262 kawfytawk  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:28:13pm

and of course poop for brains Obama thinks the energy crisis can be solved if we all just get a tune up and inflate our tires. Really!?! Really!?!

Can he really be a contender for the freakin White House?

Does congress understand that a minimum wage earner works for 2-3 hours each day just for gas money to GET to their job each day?

Send Pelosi your scathing criticisms here.

Sent her a pleasent note.

Don't worry, it was G-rated.

Maybe a drive should be started to send empty steel one-gallon gas cans to Congress, just so they can get the subtle hint.

If only one of every 100 Americans was willing to spend the money to purchase one gas can - purchased in gigantic bulk - and that share of the shipping cost via Fed Ex, then we could flood Washington with 3,000,000 gas cans.

Imagine if Congress showed up after the break and all 535 of them were met with 5,600 gas cans outside their office doors?

That's 560 thousand for the Senate and over 2.4 million for the House. Would they take the hint?

265 UncleSam  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:32:46pm

Pelosi's dictatorial refusal to allow a vote on offshore oil drilling reveals her arrogance, elitism and contempt for the representative American political process.

Sure, they see that. What they don't get is that the answer isn't to keep dunning the producers. The answer is to improve the quality of life for everyone - not just their freeloader constituents. The producing part of the population won't carry the load while their lot in life just keeps getting worse and worse, thanks to the socialist Govt.

All of them should read "Atlas Shrugged" by Ayn Rand.

And then they need to be honest with themselves regarding the failed economies and horrendous human cost of every communist country on the planet. It's not about whether more $$$ or the right people would have made a difference. Communism/socialism is against human nature.

Period.

Going to bed now.

Liberals: Acting like a bunch of immature douchebags since 1968.

What an interesting comment! Liberals have been *** for much longer than that, but that was the time frame they really got to do something about it.

US Supreme Court: 1964 Reynolds v. Sims. One-man-one-vote. Up until then, we had a Republic, thanks to BFranklin & Co. After that, we were on the slope to socialism - and worse. So, you pegged it just about right with 1968.

That's basically my point in the second 1/2 of #244. Dems have no drilling but all the other stuff (sans nuclear) and the Reps just want to add drilling to the bill, not replace it with drilling, but add.

273 AuldTrafford  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:50:51pm

re: #271 kawfytawk

Sure, but you're missing the point - they won't get booted out of office because of one-man-one-vote. A majority of Americans think the "few wealthy rich" and the "fat-cat corporations" can just hand their loot over to them - and the Dems feed off this (nay - they create it!).

So they'll keep getting elected - Obama, too, probably (doesn't much matter, 'cuz McCain is almost as liberal). The end will come when the economy folds - when the Federal out-go is more than in-come. Inflation will hold it off a couple years, but then ...

274 Sarr  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:51:08pm

How sad for us who care....
The Republicans show - sort of - (for the first time in a long long time) that they might actually have (well you know whats) and we are applauding and acting like they did something that is SOOOOOO special... If they really did have (you know whats) they would have all stayed there the entire 30 days and raised holly hell until the Democrats came back and work with the Republicans on this drilling issue.

275 larrysheldon  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 7:55:38pm

In a tradition that goes back to Newt Gingrich, when the get something good going, they give it up, pretty much without a shot being fired.

Closing with a patriotic song was a nice touch, though.

I would have liked to see them blogging live from the floor of the house wioth web cams, disheveled, unshaven, bleary eyed.

Have they no sense of drama?

I know, the drama queens are in the other party.

281 BingoBunny  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 9:00:55pm

Republicans aren't close to being fascist.. but they need a leader.. opposed to democrats ..who are all little Hitlers when they get some power.

282 Ariana  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 9:29:24pm

OT but I had to pass this one on: Zakaria, "We Should Subsidize Payments To China and India To Prevent Global Warming."Fareed Zakaria (on CNN's Anderson Cooper) just announced:

In that:
1. Global warming would reach the catastrophic point of no return within 15 years, therefore,
2. The USA and western powers created the current damage from their industrialization and should be the ones responsible for cleaning it up, not China and India, and the rest of central and southern Asia
3. China and India are building 850 coal-based energy production plants and thus will be producing the bulk of carbon pollution in the next decade.
4. China and India should not be expected to cut back and restrict the growth of their industrializing societies.
Instead,
5. If the US and and the West want them to stop industrializing and producing pollution, thereby save the planet.. then..

here's his main point:.

AMERICANS SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACCUMULATED POLLUTION BY SENDING MONEY TO CHINA AND INDIA TO REPAY THEM FOR LOST INDUSTRIAL REVENUE, IF THEY TAKE CLEANUP MEASURES

In other words, US citizens should agree to pay a tax to China and India, in return for them taking steps to eliminate their pollution.

What great idea.. I could envision the reaction of millions of American taxpayers to the idea of sending tax money to China.

A handful of congresspeople still working in the dark may not amount to much, but at least it's something.

284 FurryOldGuyJeans  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 10:34:18pm

What if a tree fell in a forest and no one really cared?

This was a publicity stunt that should be still on-going so there would be no way that it gets ignored by the MSM.

A historic moment would be this with Bush demanding a special session of Congress. But that will never happen.

285 baxtrice  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 10:46:26pm

I don't care what it is -- it's getting attention to the fact that Pelosi and Reid aren't doing a thing while Americans suffer!

287 Jed  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 6:03:26am

288 HDrepub  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 6:27:44am

Publicity stunt, probably, but no more so than the Senate sleepover sponsored by the Donkeys a while back.

amen, tfk. #289

It isn't earth shattering. You're right, Charles.

But IT'S MORE THAN ANYONE HAS DONE IN 4 YEARS.
Stretch Pelosi and her "politburo" mindset groupies are finally being challenged to do more than LINE THEIR POCKETS at the taxpayer's expense and spin lie after lie in order to promote their Euro-Am fantasy here in the US.

I think what the Repubs are doing there in is long overdue and they should keep it up during the whole August recess and stink up the place so that when the Dumbocrats come back to work it is THEY who appear to be out of sync with the demands of voters of our fair and noble nation.

291 anubis_soundwave  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:41:32am

I wrote this to Speaker N. Pelosi:

Speaker Pelosi:

As a fellow government employee, I understand the joy of taking a vacation. I'm also well aware that this one was scheduled.

However, the oil crisis is not scheduled, and it's destroying our citizens' lives.

The American people are our employers, the people we were hired to serve.

If there was a huge crisis in my government job, I would be expected to work through it--not take a five-week break. I expect to give up my comfort for the well-being of the people we serve. The same--no, more--is expected of you as the Speaker of the House. You're supposed to lead.

Get back to work.

(It's my sincere hope that the people of California will see what a slacker you are, and fire you by voting you out of office.)

- acsound,
observing from N. Charleston, SC

Full disclosure: I work for a state agency contracted by the Social Security Administration/DHHS. We're not all bad. :D

Pelosi would have been fired within months if she'd pulled this in my office. It's not unusual for salaried employees in my agency to work through the weekend WITHOUT PAY to serve the people of SC. In the letter above, I was trying to drive the point home: we're both government employees with jobs to do.

It won't be read by more than a staffer, but hey; I had a moment to vent.

re: #244 CommonCents

The reason why they don't want a trigger even of $10 a gallon.. is because some of them, the ones in charge, apparently, WANT $10 a gallon, or more. They want to push people off "the petroleum products which are destroying the planet," not seriously seek ways to enable peoples lives and the economy to continually be bettered. I'm sure others are planning on waiting til the elections, then "saving" the nation... but I think even they will be surprised come November when Pelosi & Co. still refuse to budge.

It's going to take a slap in the face by the voters to turn this around, and whether that's 10,000,000 calls/emails to the Speaker's office, or a resounding defeat of Obama in November... nothing is going to happen until Pelosi and Reid are afraid for their careers.

293 kansas  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:59:07am

I thought “historic events” were supposed to actually ... you know ... accomplish something.

Maybe it did. Obama flipped on the off shore drilling a few hours later. For what anything he says is worth.

294 eaglewingz08  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 9:07:16am

It would have been historic had the Republicans not folded yesterday at 5pm like a bad tent upon threats from the Capitol Police to shut down the protest. When have dems ever listened to threats from police to stop a legitimate or illegitimate protest. Dems have no problems taking over offices, buildings, and chaining themselves in until they are forcibly carried out by the authorities or their demands are given into. I am sad that Republicans have not learned this lesson. It would have made a much more gripping story if the Capitol Police attempted to arrest any or every one of these Congress Reps, since that would call into the protest the US Constitution's Speech and Debate Clause which bars the arrest of Congress people in the performance of their duties. Plus it would have shown that the Repubs were really serious about this issue and the effects it is having on the US public. Instead, it weakens it by showing that maybe the Repubs aren't really that interested in energy policy, but only energy politics, wedge issues. The Politiburo of the Dem party will come out of this looking stronger for having muffed this insurrection and may make Comrade Nancy Mussolousi even more entrenched in her opposition to sane energy policies.

295 mrdriven  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 11:31:05am

297 Excaliber  Mon, Aug 4, 2008 7:26:08am

.....and just the mental picture of several of these already proven fuckin' idiots , shouting and babbling in the dark, at who knows who , just adds to this stupifying ,surreal farce , that the USA finds itself in .

It's a disgrace !

And proportionally this bunch of 500 or so far, exceeds that of any demographic , for the high number of LAWBREAKERS ,CRIMINALS AND SEXUAL DEVIATES .

When you see Nero come on stage , better kiss your ass goodbye .

Got back from a family wedding in Solvang, CA last night. Good stuff, but no politics (aside from the Jewish-Palestinian Christian nuptials) so my first response to the GOP's historic stunt is, where were you clowns when Bush was outspending the Dems, when you had the majority and several of your own went Dem, etc.? It's easy to bitch and moan when you're in the minority. Next time you become the majority, maybe in my life time, use it responsibly, mkay?

299 Excaliber  Mon, Aug 4, 2008 4:07:45pm

It's nothing but the ole' "blame game" ......for the straight-jacketed ideologues :

It took BOTH parties to get us in the bloody fucking mess we are in .
And no matter what you wanna call the Democrats ......we didn't have a trillion plus deficit , and werent bogged down in two wars with150,000 plus troops commited overseas .
And I can DISTINCTLY REMEMBER the REPUBLICAN MOUTHPIECES badmouthing Clinton for those Tomahawks hurled at Bin laden in Afghanistan .

We were too busy sniffing Monica 's panties to get our act together pre-9/11 .And too fucking arrogant , were the republicans coming into office ,to attempt ANY continuity and coherence of intelligence critical to the safety of this OUR COUNTRY , too realize that we were about to be blind-sided by a bunch of fucking imbecile barbarians with box-cutters .

So cut outthe fucking partisan bullshit and try using your fucking brains this time around , for it looks like the bullshit is starting before we even get the next administartion going .[no matter who it is ]

" he who fails to learn from the last big fuck-up , is a fucking idiot "
