Oft expectation fails, and most oft there
Where most it promises; and oft it hits
Where hope is coldest, and despair most fits.

But it wasn't always this way. Centuries ago, back when sheep were sheep and werewolves were nervous, legend tells of a magical barony in central England. Famed for its flaxen-haired wenches, the beer went unnoticed until the dread Falstaff was exiled from London, wound up there, and drank the place dry...

Obama’s flip-flops in no particular order (from jgapinoy.blogspot.com):
1) was against 1990s welfare reform, now for it
2) was for Washington, DC gun ban, now against it
3) was against death penalty for any reason, now favors it for child rapists and Osama Bin Laden
4) was against NAFTA, now for it
5) was against Cuban embargo, now for it
6) promised to accept campaign spending limits/matching funds if McCain did, now refuses to participate
7) was “strongly” against FISA, a few days ago voted for it
8) was against homosexual marriage, now supports it (a rare leftward move)
9) was vocally against displaying displaying patriotism via flag lapel pins, now wears one
10) was against Jerusalem being the undivided capital of Israel, now for it
11) was for chatting unconditionally with Iran’s President AckMyDumbJihad, now for conditions
12) had promised never to “disown” Reverend Wright, now Wright is disowned
13) for 20 years was for family’s membership in hateful so-called church “Trinity”, now against it
14) was for mental health exceptions for partial-birth abortions, now against them
15) voted against laws protecting abortion survivors, now for such laws
16) claimed to be for several town hall-style debates with Senator McCain, but his campaign later said only one, and only at a time no one would watch (Independence Day)
17) was promising to never use negative ads, now using them
18) was against President Bush’s faith-based initiatives, now for them
19) demanded that Bush boycott Olympic opening ceremonies, now he’s buying ads during those ceremonies that financially support them
20) was for pulling troops out of Iraq per timetable, with little or no regard to conditions, now “entirely conditions-based”
21) two years ago, promised to bring assistance to impoverished African school where 10 of his relatives attend, but nothing yet
22) said in June that “my party” wouldn’t take money from registered lobbyists or PACs, but his campaign has accepted $15,000 from lobbyists
23)was against all offshore drilling, now for it as long as it’s “carefully circumscribed”

You are driving down the road in your car on a wild stormy night, when
You pass by a bus stop and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.

2. An old friend who once saved your life.

3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could
Only
be one passenger in your car.

Think before you continue reading:

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of
a job
application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to
die,
and thus you should save her first. Or you could take the old friend

because he once saved your life, and this would be the per fect chance
to pay
him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate
again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble
coming up
with his answer. He simply answered: 'I would give the car keys to my
old
friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind
and
wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.'

Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought

Limitations. Never forget to 'Think outside of the Box.'

HOWEVER..

The correct answer is to run the old lady over and put her out of her

misery, have sex with the perfect partner on the hood of the car, then

drive off with the old friend for a few beers.

God, I just love happy endings!

Once upon a time, there was a little bird who refused to fly south for the winter. His friends tried to convince him that winter was coming and he should go, but the little bird was adamant. Finally, his friends left on their journey, but the little bird remained behind. Pretty soon the weather turned bitter cold. The little bird began to shiver. After a while, he decided he had made a mistake, so he too headed south. But he was too late and the weather descended upon him. As he flew, ice formed on his wings. He grew more and more weary until finally he fell to earth in a cow pasture, freezing and exhausted. He was convinced he was going to die. As he lay there, freezing to death, a cow came by and crapped on him. The manure warmed his body and wings. The bird realized he would live. He was so happy, he began to sing. A cat was passing by and heard the singing. The cat dug into the manure, uncovered the bird and promptly ate him.

There are three morals to this story:

1. Not everyone who shits on you is necessarily your enemy.

2. Not everyone who gets you out of the shit is necessarily your friend.

3. And, if you're happy in your own pile of shit, keep your mouth shut.

Again - thank you Rawmuse - great way to spend some time.

On an interesting note - some of us had mutual (non-LGF) friends. Small world indeed.

Some people have compared McCain to Dole in 96--not valid; McCain is not Dole, and won't suffer his fate. He has a better staff and more political ability

If you want to compare McCain to a Prez candidate, he is Ike in 1952: not a genius, not a conservative, not a good speech-giver, and not entirely a Republican, BUT.....

He is a pesistent campaigner who knows how to duck a punch from a lazy Illinois liberal Tool. After defeating a conservative opponent in the primaries ( Robert Taft of Oho ) , Ike won his campaign by offering a practical solution to an unpopular war ( sound familiar ?)

Of course, Ike appointed Earl Warren as Chief Justice, but......

F-15 crash update

Military investigators have reportedly found no indications of structural failure in Wednesday's crash of an F-15 in Nevada that killed one of its pilots.
One Air Force official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told In From the Cold that the surviving pilot got only "one swing" in his parachute before hitting the ground, suggesting an extremely low-altitude ejection.
At the time of the crash, the F-15 was flying a mission in support of Red Flag 08-03. In its traditional, air superiority role, the Eagle would have (most likely) been at medium to high altitude before the accident occurred.

This is a CBS "exclusive" so who knows if it's true, but would anbody ever lie to Lara Logan?

Exclusive: Al Qaeda No. 2 Injured?
Aug. 1, 2008(CBS) Ayman al-Zawahiri - the second most powerful leader in al Qaeda and Osama Bin Laden's No. 2 - may be critically wounded and possibly dead, CBS News chief foreign affairs correspondent Lara Logan reports exclusively.

CBS News has obtained a copy of an intercepted letter from sources in Pakistan, which urgently requests a doctor to treat al-Zawahiri. He's believed to be somewhere in Pakistan's remote tribal areas of Pakistan.

The letter refers to Sheikh Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri by name - and says that he is in "severe pain" and his "injuries are infected."

It is reportedly written by local Taliban leader, Baitullah Mehsud, whose signature and seal are visible on the letter.

Is he dead or just faking it?

re: #34 NhaTrang72
I posted this in the spinoff links somewhere here tonight and don't expect it got a great reception, so I'll add it here:

Economic models predict clear Obama win in November
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - It really is the economy, stupid! Economic models that have correctly predicted the winner of almost all post-war U.S. presidential elections say recession fears will secure a victory for Barack Obama in November.
Three separate studies showed the Democratic presidential hopeful winning between 52 and 55 percent of the popular vote on November 4, based on current gloomy economic estimates.
Any further darkening in the economic outlook -- many analysts think things will get worse between now and November -- would reinforce that election outcome.
"The economy is certainly not going to be a positive for the Republicans," said Ray Fair, an economics professor at Yale university who built the earliest of the models in 1978.
His model, which assumed tepid U.S. economic growth of 1.5 percent and a 3 percent rate of inflation, predicted the Republican candidate John McCain's share of the vote would be 47.8 percent, handing Obama 52.2 percent.
"It is a decent margin but it is not a landslide," said Fair, who ran the numbers in April. "It would have been much larger if there had been a recession in 2008."
[Link: www.reuters.com...]
It's a longish article, but well worth the read since this economic prediction crap has been right on 10 of the last 12 presidential elections. That's the old saw: Americans - except in time of Declared War - vote with their pocketbooks. Which is yet another reason to hate the Dem Congress for going ahead and recessing for the summer and not voting on off shore drilling. Bad news for America is good news for Dems if they don't occupy the WH.

What the fuck does Reuters know? Obama won't be elected. The media swarm about him will get old once September rolls around - and most people aren't paying attention, yet. McCain is only toying with him at this point, and already getting under his thin skin - big-time. The media are starting to recognize they've pissed their collective pants over this handsome, eloquent, idiot.

He can't speak with a teleprompter at every appearance, which means he'll demonstrate his ignorance on more and more occasions. Michelle will not be muzzled - she's Hillary, circa 1992 - 10-fold. He has 300 foreign policy advisors, which means there will never be a clear foreign policy communicated. He has no running mate potential who can help him, other than Hillary - and will not choose her.

His arrogance and narcissism grow with every flash of a camera, and with it he ever closer approaches the precipice of failure - pride cometh before the fall.

And Nancy and Harry, in their obstinence over domestic oil production, will screw the pooch for the House and the Senate - so long as the Republicans can get their act together, purge their ranks fo the Ted Stevenses, and communicate their ambitions for a stronger America, more free from government intervention.

And we get cookies, key lime pie and fruitcup with our schadenfreud.

Heh™

re: #20 NJDhockeyfan

God, I just love happy endings!

i toss my buddy the keys to take the old lady to the hospital then i fuck the girl of my dreams on the bus stop bench i then catch the bus to a bar to meet up with my old friend and get drunk while talking about old times with my old friend

Hey Noam, calm the fuck down. It was reported by Rueters, not prepared by them!
I think you're right about McCain taking Obama, but "so long as the Republicans can get their act together, purge their ranks fo the Ted Stevenses, and communicate their ambitions for a stronger America, more free from government intervention" isn't really gonna happen with our House and Senate Candidates.
I don't know why, but the Republican Congress W had to himself in the first years of his first term didn't really do jack - one of the REAL reasons for the offseason blowout. We really, really need a top Senator and Congressperson, with fire in their belly and a take no prisoners approach to governtment to step forward for AMERICA.

Morning Lizards, just got back from seeing The Dark Knight, and I found out that the U.S. Military is evil again. Swell.

I read that from the source story on CNN. They give the amount of radioactivity leak as half a microCurie, "or less than what is found in a 50-pound bag of lawn and garden fertilizer." In other words, it was a smaller amount than you encounter on a regular basis in everyday life.

First, I am surprised that CNN even mentioned how much was released, facts like that can scuttle your scare mongering. Second, it is a testament to the integrity of the entire Navy Nuclear Power Program that a leak from those systems was that clean. Third, it speaks well that our Navy deals with this in a straightforward manner. This is which is why our Navy Nuclear Power Program has never had a nuclear accident.

We really, really need a top Senator and Congressperson, with fire in their belly and a take no prisoners approach to governtment to step forward for AMERICA.

Which is why I have an inherent dislike of politicians in general. They're mostly about attaining power and keeping power; constituency be damned. Republicans had the House since '94, and they got fat and greedy, drunk with power, and obtuse to their role as representatives.

We should mount a coup. The top LGF posters could take over critical functions of the government, and probably improve efficiency. Meanwhile, we engage the likes of Victor Hanson and Thomas Sowell and others to act as policy advisors while we begin elections from the ground up - city, state, then national. San Francisco in that time will fuck itself up so badly the real estate there will be ten cents on a dollar. That, or we just fence it in and make a prison colony out of it.

204 Mars Needs Neocons  Fri, Aug 1, 2008 10:45:28pm

I'm no political strategist, but what I'm seeing now is a slow buildup of substance. Currently McCain is pushing the O as an empty suit meme. It will gain more substance as it goes. Plus if the people I've talked to are any indication, they think O is stuck up, arrogant, and utterly humorless. The "world tour" irritated the hell out of most of them. (As one guy said to me "the SOB is on the news 3 times and that isn't even including the "entertainment" news shows")

Substance can wait till after the convention. O will prove himself to have no good plan for Iraq, no good plan for energy, no good plan for the economy. If McCain can hammer those issues, then O will fall. I feel that if the R's push the drilling and building refineries issue and get it out to the public that they're doing it, the fact that the D's are blocking everything will affect the voting public. Plus the fact that just the approval of drilling and refining will start to reboot the economy the way that "stimulus checks" never can.

Ah, yes. Much better picture, and a different pose, too. Someone's screwing with this story.

From that picture, it looks like it could be a dead muskrat, but there's nothing in it for scale. Is it one foot long or five?

What I thought could have been the beak of a turtle is clearly the bone of the upper mandible revealed. Almost looks like it could be a cat - lynx or bobcat, but the paws seem a little narrow. Then again, tough to tell from an immaciated carcass.

re: #246 Russkilitlover

And so ironic that the "hispanic" vote is polling BHO. Hope McCain learned something.

McCain losing big with Latinos

John McCain is winning a paltry 23 percent of the Hispanic vote compared with 66 percent for Barack Obama, according to a large poll released Thursday by the Pew Hispanic Center.

But … but … wasn’t his support for amnesty "immigration reform" supposed to make Senator McCain their hombre … their hermano ?

“The bottom line: Despite all of this positioning he’s taken on immigration, it’s shielded him nothing with Hispanics and it’s another point of distrust with Republicans.”

(I think he meant “yielded”, not “shielded”, just for the record …)

The Pew data comes on the heels of months of McCain advertising on Hispanic television and radio in Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. On Wednesday, the Obama campaign announced its first media buy of the general election on Hispanic radio in the same states. Obama has not yet purchased advertising on Hispanic television.

Oh, well.

Way to go, Juanito !

Just read an article in this months EGM that everyone here should find interesting. A lunatic ran a truck into a popular marketplace in Japan killing three then jumped out with a knife and killed 4 more and wounded several others. Japans solution currently... ban all "military" style knives. They are also considering measures to restrict "dangerous" information on the internet.

19 Teenagers and young adults have now been arrested for planning similar "events".

Once again a government goes after the tools but doesn't look at the reasons. The "kids" arrested so far have all gone on about the immortality offered by the media for these things.

Again, is it a coincidence that we get Columbine events here around the anniversary of Columbine? People who feel they aren't getting enough attention know that the media will give them the attention they desire if they create enough carnage. Even if they die, they know they will "live" forever.

It's time for the media to stop creating monsters.

If the most restrictive gun laws in the world can't stop these lunatics, maybe media responsibility can.

Obamanomics Flunks The Test

During a primary debate, the ABC host took Obama to task for proposing a doubling in the capital gains tax. History shows, he pointed out, that raising the cap gains rate actually ends up costing the government revenues.

Obama just didn't get it. "Well, Charlie," he argued, "what I've said is that I would look at raising the capital gains tax for purposes of fairness."

Forget growth and revenues. Let's just punish those "greedy" investors. It's the same Marxist reasoning behind his plan to repeal the Bush tax cuts: The rich must be made to pay their "fair" share, Obama asserts.

Never mind that the top 1% of taxpayers already pay 38% of the total tax burden, according to recent IRS data, while the bottom 50% bear just 3% of the load.

SEC extends short selling curb through August 12

U.S. securities regulators have extended through August 12 an emergency rule aimed at curbing abusive short selling in the stocks of 19 major financial firms, including mortgage giants Freddie Mac (FRE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and Fannie Mae (FNM.N: Quote, Profile, Research).

The Securities and Exchange Commission rule is part of an agency crackdown on possible market manipulation that some blame for steep declines in the shares of financial companies.

The emergency measure, that first took effect July 21 and will not be further extended, requires investors to borrow a stock before selling it short and to deliver the stock on the settlement date.

I don't get it. Does this make any sense to you?

/when has it ever been legal to short any stock without first borrowing the shares (i.e. naked shorting)?

No, that didn't come up at the time -- that particular visit to CA was in the summer of 1993; I had just graduated from college and was preparing to go teach ESL in Russia. Also, I had just "come out" to my parents a few months before, and they'd told my grandparents (on both sides), but not all of the aunts/uncles/cousins knew yet.

A few years later (maybe 1998?) I visited CA again and discovered that my dad's parents had never mentioned my homosexuality to anyone else on that side of the family -- which became clear when I mentioned my then-boyfriend to another cousin and he was like, "Huh?"

To make a long story short, on my Dad's side of the family I have a few relatives who are Muslim, as well a few who are Jehovah's Witnesses -- and the folks in both groups have a "la-la-la I'm not hearing this" attitude if and when the subject of Throbert's romantic life comes up. But everyone else in the family was very cool about it.

I had just "come out" to my parents a few months before, and they'd told my grandparents (on both sides)

True story from that California visit in summer '93, when I was still some months shy of my 22nd birthday: My grandfather picked me up at Sacramento airport -- normally my grandmother would've been with him to greet anyone flying in from out of town, but she had some sort of Old Women's Club commitment that she couldn't get out of. As we were driving back to Stockton, my 75-year-old grandfather acknowledges that they'd already gotten the "guess what: Rob's gay" news on the phone from my parents. Then he says, "well, we still love you, but I just don't see why you'd want to go around shoving your dick in another guy's ass."

At that point, there was a loud popping sound as my head exploded Scanners-style, all over the cab of Granddad's pickup truck...

(I should mention that my father is a retired Marine, and his father served in the Army in WWII, but they are both very anti-cussing. At that time, I'd never heard anything saltier than "god-dang" from either of them! Since then, I've heard my father say "bullshit" ONCE.)

I have a half-sister who is lesbian. Met her for the first time at a half-brothers wedding. Our old man was what they call a dog. Half-sibs all over the place. Sat in the airport bar for a while waiting for her plane back home and had an interesting conversation with her. Seems we both have the same tastes in young ladies. Some of her girl friends were better looking than mine. Odd having a brotherly talk with your sister.

re: #337 FamHistoryGuy

I have a copy of that sitting here somewhere in a pile of books. Cover with a black cat wearing a bow tie and pointing a tokarev with his shadow rendered as a devil. Have to finish reading it someday.

Master and Margarita is without question my favorite Russian novel. It features a Satan who is almost as funny and endearing as the one in South Park -- plus hot naked witches and gory decapitations and a suave black cat who walks around on two legs and talks. (Also in common with South Park, the novel's cosmology suggests that Hell has some regions that are actually rather nice, though not Heavenly, and I hope it's not too much of a spoiler to reveal that the two title characters are ultimately destined for the pleasant, peaceful neighborhood of Hell -- by the personal orders of J.H. Christ Himself.)

Mikhail Bulgakov wrote it as an anti-Soviet satire, but most of the satirical jabs transfer very well to American bureaucracy, both the government and corporate kind. The one thing that doesn't have a good parallel in American society is the official atheism of the Soviet state -- the "Master" of the book's title is a Russian novelist who gets in trouble for writing a book in which Jesus is treated sympathetically as an actual historic figure, though not the Son of God as Christians believe. But at times in the USSR, just to say that Jesus of Nazareth actually lived in the 1st century AD was considered an example of politicheskaya nekorrektnost.

394 Throbert McGee  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 2:39:06am

I actually still have dreams about my rat Rugby -- whereas I can't remember ever having a dream about my dog Poochy that I left with my ex in NYC. (Poochy's elderly now, but still hanging in there.)

Anyway, in these dreams, it starts out that Rugby is lost and I can't find him -- but eventually I do, and he just sits on my shoulder or lap and grooms himself while I scratch his back and stroke his soft-pretty fur. And in the dream, petting Rugby like this brings me peace and contentment.

And once I had a dream where I was trying to escape from some kind of horrible scaly monster/demon, but then Rugby showed up, and I started petting him, and I knew in the dream that somehow everything would be all right.

(For some reason, I was never able to bond as well with Soccer the way I did with Rugby -- I dunno if it was something I was doing wrong, or if Soccer was just born with a more nervous temperament, or what. But Rugby, unlike Soccer, grew to trust me completely.)

That's pretty old hat to the Japanese....

Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who ruled Japan in the 16th century and built the main tower of Osaka castle, famously outlawed swords in Japan, though he allowed the samuri to keep theirs.

Thus arose the era in Japan when samurai could terrorize the common populace. Toyotomi's actions have had effects that lasted century. Recommend reading up on him and his rule.

Taliban style beheading of British girl in Brazil..

Cara Marie Burke decapitated and hidden in suitcase
[Link: www.timesonline.co.uk...]

The dismembered body of a British girl aged 17 has been found in a suitcase after she was murdered in Brazil, allegedly by a man who had hoped to marry her.

...

Mohamed D’Ali Carvalho dos Santos, 20, is alleged to have admitted taking photographs of Cara’s dismembered corpse on his mobile telephone after killing her in Goiânia, central Brazil.

...

In a statement the secretariat for public security in Goias state said: “He took various photos of the chopped-up body with his cellphone camera, including photos like those of the Taleban, where the decapitated head is placed on top of the body.”

The Telegraph reports this ultimate piece of cruelty...

Mr Santos also telephoned Cara’s mother Ann Marie, who lives in south-west London, to boast about the gruesome crime, it has been claimed.

Just as an aside, the Times story uses the politically correct, touchy feel way of describing a foreigner's origins as his "heritage." In this case it comes out creepy and darkly ironic, considering the deed:

Mr dos Santos, a Brazilian of Turkish heritage

418 Geepers  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 4:26:36am

One presidential candidate has a effective and easy way to save up to 150,000,000 gallons of gasoline per year that includes added benefits:

But that's just the tip of the energy-saving iceberg. A careful analysis of the statistics reveals significant national gas savings can be achieved through adjusting tire pressure on America's growing fleet of Toyota Priuses. And that's where this little baby comes in: the valve stem core remover.

Available at any NAPA or Pep Boys for a few bucks, this ingenious energy-saving device has long been an indispensable part of the high school prankster's toolbox. Now, with an estimated 500,000 Priuses menacing our roadways -- each consuming 300 gallons of Earth-raping gasoline per year -- it is a key weapon in our battle for energy independence. Here's how it works:

1. Locate nearby Priuses, starting with the one with the thickest layer of bumper stickers.
2. Make sure Prius is not moving, and the area is free of police and surveillance cameras.
3. Remove valve cap, starting with passenger side rear.
4. Insert brass end of core remover tool into center of valve.
5. Turn counterclockwise until core is removed. You should hear a loud "wooshing" sound and within a few seconds Prius tire pressure should be at its correct 0 p.s.i.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 on each tire until Prius is completely inoperable, taking care to keep valve stem cores in safe place such as pocket or nearby ravine bushes.

Just think -- if we all remain vigilant and do our part, we can save America up to 150,000,000 gallons of gasoline per year! Not to mention reduced slow-moving retard congestion in America's HOV lanes.

Sun coming up. Yea! Only 3 hours til I get to hit the pillow.

If I were pretentious, I could write it like:

Sun coming Up. Yea.
Only three hours til I get
To hit the Pillow

and claim it as a haiku. But I hold no pretensions, , so don't worry about it.

Face it, the only reason it isn't an American company helping with the power plants is that we would probably make them conduct an environmental impact study firstl

Obama doesn't really speak as clearly as you think; he has actually been saying he is going to give us "Chains we can believe in"

You heard it here first.

obama is a true demagogue ... this is supposed to be a press conference, but it looks more like a campaign speech

re: #435 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

You dinged me? How dare you..um, is getting dinged good or bad? Please letme know quickly, because I am not certain how long I can hold this umbrage and develop it into a good old fashioned flame war if getting dinged is bad.

If getting dinged is actually a good thing, well, then, I guess I'll just have to do a Rosanne Rosannadanna.
