Obama Opposes Reparations?

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 8:43:26 am PDT

The Associated Press tells us that Barack Obama opposes the divisive, self-destructive “slavery reparations” concept.

But the actual Obama statement they quote is a lot more nuanced, and seems pretty far from outright opposition.

I have said in the past — and I’ll repeat again — that the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed,” the Illinois Democrat said recently.

Some two dozen members of Congress are co-sponsors of legislation to create a commission that would study reparations — that is, payments and programs to make up for the damage done by slavery.

It’s telling that Barack Obama has to start off every policy statement with, “I’ve said before ... I’ve been consistent ... I’ve consistently said ... I’ll repeat again ...”

He seems a little sensitive about the “consistency” issue.
