Site Meter Still Crashing Internet Explorer - Update: Now Fixed

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 10:46:17 am PDT

What’s up with Site Meter? We first reported the problem last night, but today their code still causes Internet Explorer 7 to throw an “Operation aborted” error. There are a lot of sites affected by this; did they just release a buggy update and go on a long weekend vacation?

If you’re getting complaints from IE7 users, remove the Site Meter traffic counter code from your blog templates.

UPDATE at 8/2/08 12:15:20 pm:

Something’s going on at Site Meter; they may have more serious problems than just some buggy Javascript, because now trying to browse to their main web site (in any browser) produces:

Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)

UPDATE at 8/2/08 2:09:01 pm:

Site Meter now reports all systems go.

Speaking of crashing & going on 5 WEEKS vacation, how about those Democrats leaving in the midst of a energy crisis?

While Rome burns, democrats fiddle!

I'm sure to their minds it was a good move. They feel they can't be held to their stand on the issue because they didn't take one.

However, I can already see the ads. "While Americans pay record high gas prices, the Republicans try to pass a bill to get things done. The Democrats? They went home."

11 lawhawk  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 11:03:15am

re: #7 alegrias

Indeed. The Democrats fecklessness is going to be their undoing if the GOP can stay on target. The Democrats also know they're weak on energy policy, which is why Pelosi carried out a defeat and retreat from the House chamber.

12 JamesTKirk  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 11:04:42am

I don't think any website crashes IE, really.

It's just that some of them aren't diligent enough in their efforts to hold a suicidal IE back from crashing itself.

Oh give them more credit. They've had so much practice, they've moved beyond idiots. When it comes to using what they have they are Uber-idiots. I've seen so many Repub's commit career suicide by refusing to use ads detailing their opponents many crimes, votes, and statements.

Internet Explorer? Who uses that? If it were an option, I'd uninstall it from windows. There are so many better choices for windows machines, namely:

1. Opera
2. Firefox
3. Safari

22 seekeroftruth  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 11:14:11am

One of the commenters on JustOneMinute has suggested this for IE users - they are having success with it:

OT: Sitemeter.com is delivering buggy JavaScript code.

To fix IE7: Click on the menu Tools -> Internet Options. Click on the tab Security. Click on the icon Restricted Sites. Click on the button Sites. Type the text '*.sitemeter.com' (without quotes). Click the Add button.

That will fix the problem.

Apparently Sitemeter updated their scripts yesterday and that triggered the problem.

The error is:

It is not possible append to the BODY element from script that isn’t a direct child to the BODY element

According to a few sites I checked the problem has something to do with the placement of scripts inside the "body tags"... or sumptin' like that...

SiteMeter IE Issues Resolved

Dear SiteMeter Users,

We have become aware of a compatibility issue with our SiteMeter tracking code and IE 7 (possibly IE 6) browsers that started sometime last night.

The problem was related to some work we were doing on the backend system for our upcoming website launch.

We’ve identified and resolved two separate but related issues -

1 - IE Users viewing pages - There was a problem with users who placed their SiteMeter tracking code outside of their HTML Body Tag. Because of the changes we made this created a failure for visitors viewing sites using Internet Explorer 7.

2 - Accessing SiteMeter and Stats - Individuals trying to access or view their SiteMeter stats by clicking on their SiteMeter logo/icons were unable to gain access. This again appears to have affected only individuals using IE7.

At this time both problems have been fixed and our services are fully operational.

For those who removed the SiteMeter code from your pages please be assured that the problem has been resolved and we sincerely aplogize for the inconvenience.

Sincerely,
The SiteMeter Team

65 Charles  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:24:49pm

aaron is probably correct

74 DoubleU  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:37:27pm

I used a website validation service on sitemeter.com, it said it couldn't validate it because of a bad request error.

75 Charles  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:37:54pm

Maybe they're messing with DNS but it hasn't finished propagating.

76 DoubleU  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:39:45pm

Hmmm using the [Link: www...] front of sitemeter I was able to get the validation service to find the page and then it showed the numerous errors that a lot of web pages give because of sloppy HTML code.

77 aaron  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:40:27pm

FWIW, see the following from nslookup:

Name: sitemeter.com
Address: 74.52.160.50

Name: [Link: www.sitemeter.com...]
Address: 74.53.21.34

Ordinarily one would have both names resolving to the same IP address...

78 Olderthandirt  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:43:42pm

Too many web related site have terrible quality control issues. Many do not have good procedures for installing software updates; the change is just installed, in some shops without a defined rollback procedure. One company, from which I was retired, had its primary revenue generator system fail over the weekend; there were 200-separate system crashes that weekend before the system support people were brought in. My cell phone vendor drops in software updates in whenever they feel like, IMHO. Those cell phone vendor changes are readily apparent due to panel changes, functionality changes, data availability changes, etc...

While I don't know what is going on with Site meter's software, my guess is that a non-verified software change was installed and that either its software support team is off for the weekend or that team is scrambling to figure out how to roll back or correct the problem.

One issue that mainframers figured out the hard way many years ago was software configuration management, especially source code changes and operational software versioning; this really did happen the hard way for many shops.

While I retired almost 8-years ago, it doesn't appear that good practices and good software versioning tools have been put in place for web related software. Pity.

I wonder if their (legacy ASP site, by all appearances) got hacked and the compromised Javascript was up to no good.

83 Quilly Mammoth  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:50:45pm

There's odd script coming out of sitemeter and I'd hazard a guess that is actually from one of their advertising partners. Remember the spyware they were planting last year? I'd bet that it was really a coding error and not a power problem that shut down three of their servers two months ago.

84 directorblue  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:52:47pm

Oops - thanks Max Darkside... I changed my template and it does indeed appear to be working again.

85 Scrub  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 12:55:08pm

I have been using a version of the HOSTS file provided by MVPS.org that has been blocking all the known servers of sitemeter already. It do it by redirecting the browser or any internet connection using name resolution to IP 127.0.0.1, which is essentially making the route go to nowhere. The modified HOSTS file is a big blacklist of known sites that have been determined to be bad for one reason or another. I recommend to anyone looking to make any machine safer to use to look into it. Here's more on the HOSTS file: Wikipedia on HOSTS file

Also with FF 3 Mozilla has made great improvements around the resources
it consumes.

The only big problem I have with FF3 is the cookie approval bug. If a page is opening on a background tab, and it needs a cookie approval from me to continue, that tab jumps to the front until I select its cookie status. In FF2, a dialog box would open for the new cookie approval, but the browser would stay on the original tab.

If you are using Windows start Firefox, start task manager and check out how much memory is being used. Let it run all night (or all day while at work) and see if the memory usage increases. I think FF3 leaks memory, it also freezes (but than thaws out) if it hasn't been used in a while.

That doesn't make any sense what so ever.

So you started using a better product (FireFox) and you like it better, yet I'm the one with the ego problem?

I guess that makes sense in your world...

re: #60 jimzinsocal

I just filled a report on this with my friends at SANS.
I referred them here to pick up the trail Charles...and perhaps they will be able [maybe a slow Saturday for them] to isolate and identify the error at sitemeter.

Should I receive an email from them? Ill post any detail here.
But hopefully they will discover the specific issue.
Hey. Its what they do...
