Obama Denies Race-Baiting Denial

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 11:38:10 am PDT

Barack Obama kinda-sorta admits that his “I don’t look like those other presidents” line just might be referring to his race.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do with race,” Obama said. “Here’s what I was saying and I think this should be undisputed: That I don’t come out of central casting, when it comes to presidential races. For a whole range of reasons. I’m young, I’m new to the national scene, my name is Barack Obama, I am African American, I was born in Hawaii, I spent time in Indonesia. I do not have the typical biography of a presidential candidate.”

Obama should have a word with his staff, then, so they don’t continue to reflexively deny things that are obvious to anyone with more than two brain cells.

An Obama spokesman denied that the line about “dollar bills” was related to the Democrat’s race...

"I do not have the typical biography of a presidential candidate.”

That is pretty true. Most Presidential candidates weren't blatantly Marxist. Most were also raised in the US or on US bases most of their life and didn't spend large portions being raised in an Islamic nation.

Well, look. He's black. He's trying to raise the issue, air it out, wear it out, so it's not a negative. If it can be made a positive, all the better. I presume this is the reasoning behind his mentions, it's only campaign 101 stuff.

When his campaign then denies it, because they deny anything and everything the Republicans say, that's the reflex, well, whatever. That's just the modern democratic party, where incivility is job #1.

Is he playing the race card on himself? Sure. It keeps the Democratic base excited. Should McCain point it out? Sure, because it's politics, not that there's really anything wrong with it.

Obama agrees to 3 debates with McCain

Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed further away from rival John McCain's challenge for a series of Lincoln-Douglas debates, agreeing only to the standard three face-offs in the fall proposed by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

In a letter to the commission, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said the short period between the last political convention and the first proposed debate made it likely that the commission-sponsored debates would be the only ones in the fall.

"We've committed to the three debates on the table," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said in an interview. "It's likely they will be the three appearances by the candidates this fall."

Asked by The Associated Press if that meant Obama would not agree to any other debates, Psaki said, "We're not saying that."

Obama: McCain Would Serve As "Loyal Opposition" In Obama Administration

Barack Obama looked ahead to a potential Obama administration and suggested John McCain would serve as the "loyal opposition, in the minority."

"It is important to have a strong opposition," he added, "keeping you on your toes" and "calling you out."

At the start of his answer Obama joked the questioner was "setting [him] up to get in trouble" possibly alluding to recent criticism from the McCain campaign that he is presumptuous.

"You know I don't know that there's that perception," Obama said earlier this morning. "It's not really clear exactly what it's based on. If I was presumptuous or taking this for granted, I wouldn't be working this hard this week. I'm beat."

Obama agrees to 3 debates with McCain

Democratic candidate Barack Obama on Saturday backed away from rival John McCain's challenge for a series of joint appearances before the political conventions, agreeing only to the standard three debates in the fall.

In May, when a McCain adviser proposed a series of pre-convention appearances at town hall meetings, Obama said, "I think that's a great idea." In summer stumping on the campaign trail, McCain has often noted that Obama had not followed through and joined him in any events.
....
"We've committed to the three debates on the table," campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki said Saturday in an interview. "It's likely they will be the three appearances by the candidates this fall."

Asked by The Associated Press if that meant Obama would not agree to any other debates, Psaki said, "We're not saying that." She said the McCain campaign had rejected Obama's proposal for two joint town hall meetings.

It will be interesting to see how these debates go. Obama doesn't seem very confident in his ability to debate so maybe that's a good sign.

Funny but George Washington had wooden teeth, hardly 'central casting material'. (Interesting the Obamanation used a CELEBRITY TERM, 'central casting', referring to show biz casting departments for ACTORS and ACTRESSES, to perform ROLES in MAKE BELIEVE productions). Abe Lincoln was from Central Casting-tall, lanky, and somewhat morose? Thomas Jefferson, red hair, very shy in public speaking, not exactly central casting. Andrew Jackson his head was as big as Jean Fraude Ketchup's, nuff said about central casting putting him in office. Pres. Ulysses S. Grant, long beard, hiiiigh forehead, receding hairline, 'beer gut'-paunch, short legs, not exactly central casting. Pres. William McKinley, looked like Mr. Potter from movie Its a Wonderful Life, but certainly is not the kind of central casting that the Obamanation was talking about. Plus central casting would hardly pick a President who didn't stay in office for at least one complete term, let alone one complete year. President Grover Cleveland, had a moustache like John Bolton's (and you know how much libbies love Bolton, plus he was humongous, probably the fattest President next to Taft. Not central casting in the slightest. President ll: James Madison, also large amount of balding, hair shoulder length and wore an ascot and faaabuulous clothes not exacting out of central casting. Last, but not least, President Woodrow Wilson, had a stone face that could frighten small children especially when he smiled.
Again, no central casting made this choice for President.
Indeed there is but one huge area where the Obamanation differs from these dollar Presidents, and that is that the overwheliming majority of them had REAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS, whereas the OBAMANATION has NONE. The Obamanation has a talent for reading a teleprompter, but by that standard any TV host is as qualified (or more qualified) than the OBAMANTION. The Presidency is not a entry level position for affirmative action narcissistic applicants such as the Obamanation.
Or to put it another way, Never has one presumptive nominee for President had such a LARGE perecption of himself based upon so LITTLE.

Axelrod:

I'm new, I'm relatively young, I haven't spent my life in Washington. And yes, I'm African-American - and that's going to be some fodder."

Andrew Jackson was born in 1767. The constitution makes a specific exception on the natural born American clause for all those who were born prior to 1789. Specifically:

Clause 5: Qualifications for office

No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

By the time of their inauguration, the President and Vice President must be:

* natural born citizens (or citizens at the time of the Constitution's adoption)
* at least thirty-five years old
* inhabitants for at least fourteen years of the United States.

--------

If you were a citizen of the US in 1789 you could become president. Later on, as foreign born people who were citizens in 1789 died out, it was only possible to be a president if you were a natural born citizen. I keep wondering if Hillary has the naturalized at birth vs natural born citizen up her sleeve to use at the convention. Hamilton who was born in the West Indies could have become president. He was a citizen in 1789. Thomas Paine probably would have qualified too, despite being born in England. Lafayette, if he had become a citizen prior to 1789 would also have been eligible.

However, it is not clear to me that under the constitution, BO is eligible despite being born in the US of a US mother. due to the immigration laws in effect at the time of his birth.

I agree, although to be fair to obama, I have to remember that perhaps our greatest President, Abraham Lincoln, had a thinner resume when he was elected to the White House (one term in Congress).

Lincoln took it on the chin for many years, politically, before he truly succeeded. He exemplified perseverance, if nothing else.

I would think he wrote his own speeches and was very quick at ad libbing.
At one campaign speech a heckler said:
"Tell everyone all you know, Abe, it won't take very long."
Lincoln's response:
"I'll tell you what. I'll tell everyone everything we both know and it won't take any longer."

re: #245 Cognito

Lincolns political career started when he was in his early 20's running for (but losing) a seat in Illinois assembly as a Whig. He won a seat 2 years later. From then on, he was always involved in politics, even as a lawyer

Actually Lincoln lost many times. In 1832, '48, '55, '59... and suffered numerous business failures along the way.

Obama Says Republicans Will Use Race to Stoke Fear
By Caren Bohan
June 20, 2008

JACKSONVILLE, Florida (Reuters) - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama said on Friday he expects Republicans to highlight the fact that he is black as part of an effort to make voters afraid of him.

“It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economy or their outstanding foreign policy,” Obama told a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida. “We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid.

“They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black?”

Well they aren't selling technology to NASA, NASA is paying for them to launch stuff for them. The rocket that they are going to launch today also has the capability to go to the moon (PDF). NASA worked great in the early space program but they are a government agency with lots of bureaucracy. Now the reports states the man that was supervising the visit was clinging onto the car for several blocks...and the lady that was driving wouldn't think that a man hanging onto her car was a little strange? Making it cheaper. Since when has the government been able to do that?

The Shuttle was supposed to be cheaper, but by the time they designed it so it could satisfy everyone they needed support from (like the military), it was no longer the research project it needed to be, but a design we'd be stuck with because it would fit within budget.

The private companies have been starting smaller; with maybe 6 person to suborbital flight. Once they get that working, they can take another step; maybe 1 person to orbit - or even a disposable 2nd stage satellite launcher.

Possibly but I'd like to keep NASA as a government agency. A lot of the cool stuff to do in space (the space station, manned mission to Mars) have no financial gain so the private sector isn't interested. There's something to be said for a certain amount of unprofitable pure science and exploration. However I think the competition from the private sector is a good thing.

The left is sustained by whiney idiots needed to do the spadework. These are the unemployable types who infest government at the lower levels but are also found elsewhere. What leading Liberals forget is that these people being dysfunctional are unreliable and will turn on them. For example Martha Stewart, a long time supporter of Bill and Hill, was shocked to discover that the flaming idiot that her broker had hired to answer the phone could send her to jail for yelling at him. Obama has staffed his campaign with sociology students and they are making a hash of simple things. To be fair every campaign Right and Left knows the volunteers have a corps of kooks. What is different is that for the Republicans the leadership do refer back to reality to fact check. For the Democrats the reality is irrelevant to the pageant they are selling.

re: #317 Geepers

solomonpanting (#252),

Nice.

Lincoln also did the Jack Cass routine immortalized in John Ford's Young Mr Lincoln

be Lincoln: [cross-examining Cass] J. Palmer Cass.
John Palmer Cass: Yes, sir.
Abe Lincoln: What's the "J" stand for?
John Palmer Cass: John.
Abe Lincoln: Anyone ever call you Jack?
John Palmer Cass: Yeah, but...
Abe Lincoln: Why "J. Palmer Cass?" Why not "John P. Cass?"
John Palmer Cass: Well, I...
Abe Lincoln: Does "J. Palmer Cass" have something to hide?
John Palmer Cass: No.
Abe Lincoln: Then what do you part your name in the middle for?
John Palmer Cass: I got a right to call myself anything I want as long as it's my own name!
Abe Lincoln: Well then if it's all the same to you, I'll call you Jack Cass.

Also remember Lincoln did serve in the active militia during the Black Hawk War.

Obama agrees to 3 debates with McCain

It will be interesting to see how these debates go. Obama doesn't seem very confident in his ability to debate so maybe that's a good sign.

Such people are known as master debaters....

Aren't those people who debate themselves? And lose the argument?
Also a working definition of an Ensign.

Also a definition of Obama. If it weren't for the Clinton leftovers namecalling, Obama wouldn't have a campaign.

If Obama ever comes up with anything 25% as witty, maybe he can start to become eligible for currency.

This is excellent....playing the race card is a sure sign of weakness.

The guy has to be wondering why he does not have a substantial lead.

Saw a Obama spokesman try this on Laura Ingram last night. He sounded laughably stupid.

I've heard similar compliments about 2nd LTs for those who were in the Army, or for that matter people with no military experience, who were in the Air Force.

The more I read about the quality of the people we had in this country the more it inclines me to believe in Providence. Lincoln could never get elected today. He'd be dismissed as a freak with Marfan's Syndrome and Depression. For the record his policy regarding tariffs was regressive by modern standards.

342 Silhouette  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 4:42:41pm

Not out of central casting? Is he claiming that TVs and movies don't cast black men as president? Absurd, and easily proven wrong.

Just as pointed out in #83, the president on "24".
James Earl Jones played the president in 1972 in the movie "The Man."
Morgan Freeman was the president in "Deep Impact"
Tommy Lister in "The Fifth Element"
I'll leave out that Chris Rock, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Richard Pryor have all played the US President because they were comedies, mocking the idea that they'd ever be president as impossible.

In other words, the idea that a black president ISN'T what they'd cast in central casting is, like everything else Obama utters, pure BS.

Note to Obama, stop talking about your race. No one else is but you.

343 Silhouette  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 4:49:05pm

He is openly accusing Americans bigotry.

What I'd like him to realize is that we aren't all about looks like he thinks we are. I can only assume that it is projection and he is all about race and appearance.

Honestly, I don't have an image in my head of what a US president would look like. I know what many in the past HAVE looked like. But since when have Americans ever decided that a future president must look like a past one? By that logic, we'd still be electing folks in white wigs.

Clearly, we can change with the times better than he thinks we can.

His agenda of calling us racists is so clear. "For all Americans have sinned and thought of the president as white. But vote for me, and redemption and forgiveness will be yours. And today you will be with me in paradise."

Halle Berry is half white. Will she be called a racist for choosing to highlight the black half?

Will we be called racist for not caring what Halle Berry is, as long as whatever process produced her produces lots more like her?

re: #104 Quintus_Arius

Obama is a Wilsonian Progressive. Wilson himself, and most of his Administration, were great admirers of Benito Mussolini and did their level best to import his policies and politics.

346 Mich-again  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:12:22pm

If "central casting" did have the power to pick the President they sure wouldn't pick John McCain. He's too old, too white and too male for Hollywood.

re: #199 eaglewingz08

Washington's dentures were made out of several different things, including whale ivory and animal teeth. They hurt him when he wore them, which is why you don't see any portraits of him smiling.

Grant's beard was actually fairly short for the era. You wanna see long beards, take a look at Longstreet, Stuart, Kemper, or many of the other generals of either side. The chief engineer of the Union Pacific, Grenville Dodge, had an even bushier beard than Longstreet.

I read someplace that John Adams was the most "stout" president in terms of BMI, closely followed by Taft (who weighed in excess of 300 lbs) and Cleveland. At the time, fat was not a turnoff; most of the very rich, men and women, were also fat.

Abraham Lincoln, when he was not dabbling in politics, was a railroad lawyer, mostly representing the Illinois Central. In 1857, representing the Rock Island Bridge Co. (a subsidiary of the Rock Island Line), he won a landmark case that granted railroads the right to build bridges over rivers (A gross simplification, I admit, but the full background story is longer than anyone here will want to read).

That is far more than Obambi has ever accomplished in his life; Barry's crowning achievement as a state legislator was enabling a crony's housing project that has since been found to be uninhabitable. Par for the course in Chicago politics.

348 thgrant  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 6:35:26pm

Obama is a racist. I am not. I am white, he is black. Go figure.

re: #239 Shr_Nfr

Andrew Jackson was born in 1767. The constitution makes a specific exception on the natural born American clause for all those who were born prior to 1789.

Well, it was long enough ago that the only people who would be bothered by it either way are the Cherokees. They have a long-standing grudge against him because of the Trail of Tears... and it wouldn't greatly surprise me if they were to hold a contest every year where the winner could piss on Jackson's grave.

However, it is not clear to me that under the constitution, BO is eligible despite being born in the US of a US mother. due to the immigration laws in effect at the time of his birth.

You might want to research the "anchor baby" issue in the Southwest, particularly in California. The parents don't even have to be legally here; if the kid is born in US territory, the kid is a citizen. Changing that would require a Constitutional amendment.

I'm just not clear what the objective -- the eventual objective I guess -- is, beyond selling the tech to NASA or whatever government agency.

Is there something in space that needs doing that we're unable to do now?

Were it not for the fact that NASA is staffed with serial f**kups, we would have a permanent base on the moon and would be working on a manned flight to Mars by now. Instead, they went with the shuttle, which they are about to retire.

We haven't left LEO since 1972.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do
with race

I'm waiting ... Still waiting ... Must I keep holding my breath ? ...
For an apology to the McCain camp for his earlier claim that rhey were playing the Race card .

I don't look like the other presidents

Largely because you're - or should that be You're ? - not a president at all

I am African American

Wrong again : You're HALF African American.
Does he 'forget' his WHITE half deliberately ?

Obama, "I'm not playing the race card, but, I'm black."

353 starsfan914  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:04:26pm

Somewhat off topic but check out this link to CNN: [Link: politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com...] the comments are totally ripping Obama for his shift on Oil drilling.

Flying pig alert? Everytime I try to post comments at CNN they NEVER show them (and of course I am always nice and don't say anything too terrible).

Check it out before it goes down the memory hole.

Perhaps one of McCain's campaign ads could layer vapidities of BHO over this, for all the "flyover" states.

' “I don’t think it’s accurate to say that my comments have nothing to do with race,” Obama said.'

Am I the only one who would parse this as equivalent to, "I DO think it's accurate to say that my comments have SOMETHING to do with race" ?

Of course, I'm using a rule which says that the negation of a negative is an affirmative.

Is it racist to use such a rule, instead of a rule that says adding more negatives just makes a thing even more negative?

Waddya think?
