Frank Disappears Open Thread

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 5:07:27 pm PDT

After years of looking at Frank Zappa quotes, the staleness factor has finally overwhelmed me. I’m retiring Frank for now, although he may reappear in the future without warning, when you least expect it.

Meanwhile, here’s an open thread for a Saturday afternoon, after a quick 20-mile ride.

Meanwhile, here’s an open thread for a Saturday afternoon, after a quick 20-mile ride.

I'm not up for a 20-mile ride, can I post anyway?

2 itellu3times  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:09:23pm

Say, now that it's open, how about this anthrax guy, anybody have any wisdom on that?

3 Big Steve  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:10:04pm

too busy watching Ken Millers clip to go out bike riding

4 Sharmuta  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:10:12pm

I will miss Frank and look forward to his hopeful return.

5 WV.Hillbilly  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:11:09pm

I missed it immediately on my first visit today.

6 wrenchwench  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:11:46pm

I hafta ride 20 miles before I can read the thread?

7 Occasional Reader  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:11:50pm

Possible substitute: Firesign Theatre quotes?

Okay, and reposting my question from the last thread: Has anyone here ever used the "Rosetta Stone" language learning programs, and if so, waddja think?

8 Shug  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:11:52pm

Can we have some Dweezil quotes instead?

9 vxbush  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:12:06pm

What about Frank Sinatra quotes?

Ah. I guess not.

No, but I have heard millions of their commercials. And don't speak any of the languages.

12 Palandine  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:13:59pm

I'm agnostic on the Frank Zappa quotes.

However, I love having the rotating titles above the lounge lizard. Even the old ones crack me up if I think of the lizard saying them.

13 Occasional Reader  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 5:15:52pm

I'd also be happy to license Occasional Reader quotes, for a surprisingly reasonable fee.

I wish I knew. On the one hand, he could very well have been guilty.

On the other hand, Occam's Razor would indicate that, immediately after the worst terrorist attack on American soil, the folks who committed the first attack would be "people of interest" in one of the first biological terrorist attacks on American soil.

I don't suspect we'll ever know for sure.

It's better for search engines when the page title is related to the content of the page, too -- instead of changing randomly. Weirdness is out of style.

Looks like Charles answered my question before I asked it. I hope at least the classics are archived somewhere.

I loved Frank Zappa..His albums are pure classic..
when i was in high school poking around the limited collection of music in the library.. I found a German orchestra album directed by Mr. Zappa..like all classical music..dude was a effen genius..
RIP Frank

It shouldn't surprise. Your evolution vs id postings and discussions have resulted in many of us learning more and, thus, refining our beliefs. When your beliefs are challenged through knowledge, some find it difficult to comprehend and accept that beliefs may be formed using incomplete information and therefore require change and refinement. This doesn't necessarily mean you must abandon old beliefs but rather, makes what you do believe in more solid and sound. Some don't view it that way and will fight to the death, to hold on to those old beliefs. Sort of the earth is flat no matter how much it has been proven to be round, thingy. Now instead of convincing people that the earth is flat, you are convincing them you are nuts.

I never forgave Frank for his song "Goblin Girl." Man, I hated that song, so much that it nearly negated everything else Zappa did in his career.

For the morbidly curious among you (my main fan base), here are the unbelievably infantile lyrics.

Every time I saw the Zappa quote on the right, I thought of that song. What a relief!

re: #2 itellu3times

I have no clue about Ivins other than he and his shop was rather sloppy with the safety rules.

Legal fees have known to push a number of people to the brink but I don’t know about him. It was pointed out that even if he could not afford his current legal team a court would appoint one would have been put in place(although most likely of lower quality).

After the FBI drained a pond, blamed another employee and paid a huge compensation claim to said employee, they needed a suspect.

Ivins could have accidentally let some anthrax slip into the enemy hands. Or, he could have mailed the stuff himself.

It first showed up in the office of a Florida rag – which seems like a classic al Qaeda blunder and certain males of Middle Eastern decent were found to have work around anthrax and purchased antibiotics.

But, Ivin’s could have done it.

It’s a mystery.

When I first saw the headline I thought "disappears" was being used as a verb -- as in, "Former-Comrade CENSORED is no longer to be mentioned, and as a matter of fact, I never knew him/her." Kind of what the Hussein campaign does regularly, come to think of it. Guess it's the in thing among the commie crowd.

Speaking of things that have disappeared, this is a fascinating site. It's a series of photo essays of extraordinary architecture that was destroyed in St. Louis to make way for "progress." Amazing, heartbreaking stuff.

The main page [Link: www.builtstlouis.net...] also inludes buildings that are threatened and those that have been saved.

I'm a big fan of urban exploration. I can't do it myself, because of the risk of misdemeanor trespass convictions (my job frowns on doing anything even mildly illegal). Still, I'm fascinated by the detritus left behind in some of these old wrecks.*

*It goes without saying that scavengers, thieves, and idiot grafitti taggers are in no way urban explorers.

Zappa was music genius. I remember an interview just before he died in which the female interviewer (wish I could remember who) commented, in a condensending tone, that she was surprised he was still smoking. He looked at her through a haze of smoke and said something to the effect of 'I'm dying, quitting right now isn't going to prolong my life but it would make me a miserable sonuvabitch to everyone around me. I don't want them happy to see me take my last breath. Besides tobacco is my favorite vegetable."

Also attending were Dianna, her boss (who I missed), Bobibutu, and Mikalm, plus lurker Mike. Really great to meet these fine Lizards in real life, and I hope to meet many more.

90 StinkHammer  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 6:18:26pm

Okay, I'll admit to being a dissenter here: I'm not a Zappa-phile. I admire his musical creativity and talents -- and his band was always monstrous (Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Vai, Chad Wackerman, Terry Bozzio, et al.) -- but my fleeting interest in his music faded very quickly; it's too self-indulgent for me (and I don't mind some self-indulgent music every once in a while). Frank was much more the "mathemetical" composer than "feel" musician for my tastes. Zappa in New York remains my favorite recording of his.

[And yes, I did read his autobiography (from whence many of Charles' Zappa quotes arose) when it came out, since it appeared during my brief Zappa interest period. It was engaging the first time through, but I'll confess that in rereadings over the years I find myself less sympthetic to many of his views as I grow older/wiser/more refined in my personal philosophies/ideologies.]

I am proud to be an American, and I support the troops the way they should be supported. I am a member of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps and I plan on joining the military as soon as I can. As it stands, I'm nursing a bit of a day-after burnout now. Immediately after the LGF gathering I went to an art-opening/hipster-party thing in SF's SoMa district, and drank and danced until 3 AM. I had guitar playing friend who loved Zappa. I listen to his Zappa albums. I think that Zappa was a brilliant composer of lyrics.

But, Zappa had difficulty scoring the music in a way that would produce big hits. Thus, he was stuck with a “Zappa Cult” following – not that it is a bad thing. He made a huge number of albums which can be a good thing or an expensive thing.

If Zappa could have team with a Jeff Beck, David Gilmore, or Mick Ronson (possibly Jimmy Page) he could really have made the big time.

I thought your post #38 made a lot of sense (of course, 'til I got to the last sentence!).

I think we often think in a sort of "shorthand", and when we're trying to type fast, before another 100 comments intervene, we write down the shorthand that's in our head, rather than what we intend. Well, I know I do it frequently.

Your response, "I wouldn't have it any other way" is on the mark.

The answer to WHY, is that I left my mark. It may be small, but it still remains a mark for others to examine.

I never saw much in Frank. I never had a feel for his zig zag notes and confusing patterns. His bands though, man I sure loved his bands.

When I was a teen there was a group of people in my neighborhood who only liked Frank. They loked down their noses at me because I rejected Frank. He was as I saw it back then an elitist artist. I didnt get him and I couldnt pretend so I stayed away from Frank and the Frank group. I was always more of a Pat Travers, Jeff Beck, kind of guy.

Dweezil rocks, no doubt.

re: #2 itellu3times

Say, now that it's open, how about this anthrax guy, anybody have any wisdom on that?

Nothing current, but I had occasion to talk to someone who works at that place (in a technical capacity) and it was really eye-opening. All she would say about the guy they were investigating was that it was "for good reason". I'm not sure if she was talking about this guy, or the previous one that had been the focus and has since been cleared (I didn't realize at the time that there were the two).

On a more general note, she said she was always feeling run down, because they are constantly innoculating her against things being worked on there, and before your body recovers from one they hit you with another. She said they are very careful about allowing any germs in, but less so about what gets out, which seemed odd. I'm left thinking that they are less concerned about contaminating the public than they are about contaminating their germs. Maybe there's another side to it, but on its face it's a little disturbing.

re: #130 GeeWizI agree with you, I suspect most people who start businesses do it for that very reason. I will include that one of my other reasons (among a list that I compiled before I invested every penny I had and mortgaged the house twice over) was "because I could". God, I love this Country. My biggest surprise in starting this enterprise was discovering that I am a minority and eligible for all sorts of loan programs. I am a woman. I'd be really pissed if I was a typical white male.

Well, I'm a typical white male who mortgaged his home to start his business while being informed by his wife that she was pregnant with his third child. So much for planned parenting! NO ONE, I repeat, NO ONE, came to our rescue. I worked and slaved to provide for my family. I built my business from the ground up and was rewarded years later by a cheating wife.

135 madmax517  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:02:47pm

I recall Frank Zappa about as well as I did Herbert Khaury in that same time period. Only song title I can think of right now is The Idiot Bastard's Son.. I use it as a reference to some trolls on another blog.

Khaury (Tiny Tim) had some strange songs also. "I'm the Viper...I've come to vipe your vindows."

136 Capitalistincharge  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 8:21:29pm

re: #134 GeeWizAhhhh...I played good corporate wife and helped him get where he wanted to go. I was rewarded with a cheating husband who, apparently, planned his exit for 2 years. He managed to hide, bury, dispose of all assets before he filed and disappeared. I was left with our two beautiful teen-age daughters, $2500 and a house I could not afford. That was 7 years ago. Within 2 years I was making 6 figures and put my girls through college and then their weddings. After my responsibilities were covered, I decided it was time to do this thing. Failure is not an option and success is imminent. Like I said previously, success is the best revenge, wouldn't you agree.

I like "Peaches in Regalia", but have no use at all for "Dancin Fool", "Yellow Snow", "Valley Girl", "Muffin Man", etc. I understand Frank was sort an eclectic fellow, and people of different tastes can go different ways. Do I have hope of becoming a Zappa fan yet? Where do I look album wise for more instrumental music and less of the juvenile/goofball lyrics?

The genius of Frank Zappa was he could pin you , tell you to go fuck yourself , and you wpou;ldn't even know it .

As I listen to some remarks here , they are simply proof of his genius and his acid-tongue-truthfullness .

There's one who said his lack of "successful albums " in some way , indicated fault in his musical abilities .

That's exactly the type of attitude he always mocked .

Hypocrisy angered Zappa and he let it all hang out in his musc , he could care less whether or not you bought his albums , AND IF HIS SONGS BOTHERED ANYONE , THEN THEY ACHIEVED THEIR INTENDED EFFECT.

He was a master of satire , and had a sense of black humor that many just simply missed .

Too bad many of you could not enjoy him while he was alive , and to those who "got turned off " by a single song or comment ..lol.....you got pinned man , the purpose was to piss you off , you were the target , and he rarely missed .

I listened to him from the start , and after playing an album down my freinds basement , his Dad came downstairs ...looked at us ...looked at the Hi-Fi player , and simply picked it up and threw it against the wall .

LOL...Ole' frank achieved his end again .

Hey Frank ...I love you man .

Well, it depends if you are Queen of all you can see... or really just Nothing At All (the real play on words). Sort of a tout de rien or rien de tout, depending on your perspective. I suppose people presume it's a play on Rien not Reine, ergo, that makes you un garçon et non une fille.
So, what did you intend to play upon?

There are always the SHUT UP AND PLAY YOUR GUITAR CD's, but a lot of Zappa's CDs are interspersed with goofy little ditties (I like the goofiness; his "Broken Heart are for Assholes" has set my mental outlook straight on a couple of occasions long, long ago). If you can find the LP of SLEEP DIRT, I highly recommend that one for all of its pure instrumental goodness, especially the killer "The Ocean Is The Ultimate Solution" (unfortunately, the CD version has some dumb-ass lyrics delivered by an overwrought female vocalist and while LATHER has the tune also, there is a lot of material to wade though and there is a more than an adequate amount of silliness. I also recommend the largely instrumental HOT RATS, WAKA/JAWAKA & THE GRAND WAZOO. WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH is a tough row to hoe, but it does have "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama/Oh No/The Orange County Lumber Truck" the last being one of my favorite instrumental ditties (the theme is taken from the instrumental release LUMPY GRAVY).

The last stage of FZ's career was his "big band" and there are some jewels there. BROADWAY THE HARD WAY has some biting lyrics and the sublime "Stolen Moments/Murder By Numbers" (featuring Mr. Sting on vocals) and MAKE A JAZZ NOISE HERE is also worth checking out. I'd also recommend THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE, but be forewarned that it is mostly a vocal effort and might be a bit too silly/biting.

I miss Frank, both he and my dad died in the same year. 1993 sucked...
