RetweetAnd Now for Some MC 900 Ft. Jesus

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 6:01:18 pm PDT

Here’s a wacky music video from 1989 I never knew existed, even though I’m a long-time fan of Mark Griffin (aka MC 900 Ft. Jesus) and his unique mix of Miles Davis-ish fusion jazz, hip-hop, and creepy poetry. This is from the album Hell With the Lid Off.

I know, very weird, isn't it. With a cartoonish plane/spaceship flying by. The video was produced in 1989, so it's not a reference to 9/11.

ONE MILE FOR EVERY SERVICE MEMBER KILLED
IN OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM.

Beginning Flag Day, June 14, 2008, a dedicated team of runners will run across America from Fort Irwin, CA to Arlington National Cemetery, one mile for every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, and Marine killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. For ten weeks, team members will mark each mile with an American flag and signcard in an apolitical reflection of remembrance of each service member.

Use the links below to follow the team as they travel across America, to learn more about the lives of our service members, and to find out how you can run one mile for the fallen.

I saw them at FSU around '91.

Enjoyed the show except for the preaching about "White Male Guilt." First time I had heard that. Then some skins started tossing nazi salutes. Then someone asked why they were wearing leather nikes if they were vegans. Then a girls said she was bi and just wanted to dance.

So they shut up and sang. It was a good show when the played and shut up.

A non-musical note before I vanish offline for the night, from Powerline, Obama and the Palestinians:

Anatomy of a Delusion

Fighting continues in Gaza between rival gangs. Earlier today, Hamas thugs killed a number of members of a "clan" that is said to be loyal to Fatah.
...
The upshot was that 150 Palestinians associated with Fatah fled Gaza for civilization; that is to say, Israel. The Israelis opened the border to take them in. The photo below shows a wounded Fatah loyalist being taken to an Israeli hospital:
...
Like many liberals, Barack Obama takes it as an article of faith that the first order of business, should he become President, will be to solve the problems of the Palestinians. Only this, Obama says, will enable us to make progress on the broader front of the Middle East and the Arab world.

This is exactly backward. Of all the twisted and corrupt Arab cultures, the most dysfunctional, by far, is that of the Palestinians. This is because, for more than a half-century now, the Palestinians have been used by their fellow Arabs and Muslims as political tools.
...
Of all the backward countries of the Middle East, Palestine will be the last to be reformed, not the first.

Karadzic protected by US until he broke 'deal': Belgrade report

Bosnian Serb wartime leader Radovan Karadzic was protected by the United States until a CIA phone bug caught him breaking the terms of his "deal", the Serb newspaper Blic reported Saturday, quoting a US intelligence source.

The newspaper claims Karadzic was secretly granted immunity in return for keeping a low profile.

"Karadzic, indicted for genocide and war crimes, was under US protection until 2000, when the CIA intercepted his telephone conversation that clearly proved he personally chaired a meeting of his old political party," the daily quoted a "well-informed US intelligence source" as saying.

A recent survey by the Citizens Advice Bureau found 7.4million Brits had tried and failed to find an NHS dentist in the past two years. And a third of the population have not been for a dental check-up in the past year.

re: #117 Cartman

Man, that just ain't right.

Another story out of Britain, ER's are required to process incoming patients in a certain amount of time. Because they are so overworked they hold patients in the ambulance, because the clock doesn't start until the patient comes in the doors.

Welcome to National Health (s)Care.

The 80's was pretty much a musical void for me.

"K-T" -

The "80's" were not as great as "60's"and/or "70's" for those of us who were there - AND - still there was - RUSH, The POLICE, Duran Duran, Men at Work, Flock of Seagulls, Madonna, U-2, etc. et. al.

Well in that case, quotas, waiting lines, unavailable procedures are a small price to pay for FREE!

It's a private civilian company launching some stuff for NASA. I think this is the first time it's happened.

Lift off! Yeay!

147 FloatingRock  Sat, Aug 2, 2008 9:07:25pm

The vocalist is so bad it reminds me of Leo Kottke, except that Leo Kottke is such a spectacular guitar player his singing is inconsequential to the quality of his music. In this case there is nothing to compensate for the crappy singing, so I give it a thumbs down.

The bass line is actually from Weather Report's Cucumber Slumber.

Funky :)

re: #33 jones

I though the name came from the televangelist who had a big Jesus threaten to kill him in a vision.

The things you think you know.

Back in the 80's, Oral Roberts claimed to have a vision of a 900 ft. Jesus who told him that he had to collect money to build a medical center or else God would "take him away".

154 BirdFLU  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 11:56:50am

The MC900 Ft Jesus name comes from that Oral Roberts claim.

155 SeafoodGumbo  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 2:05:36pm

Thanks for that video!

It's a shame he only did three albums. Welcome to my Dream is one of the best albums of the decade, hands down.
