Report: Syrian Leader's 'Right Hand Man' Assassinated

Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 9:47:35 am PDT

A report is circulating through Arab media that the “right hand man” of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad has been assassinated.

BEIRUT (AFP) - Arab media reported on Sunday that a brigadier general thought to be the Syrian regime’s liaison with Hezbollah in Lebanon has been assassinated. ...

The Saudi-owned pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat on Sunday quoted “informed sources” in London as saying that a senior Syrian officer had been found dead. “The circumstances of the incident are not clear,” the London-based paper said in its report, which said the sources suggested that the slain officer had been “in charge of sensitive files and closely linked to the Syrian top brass.”

Al-Bawaba, an Arab news website, named the officer as Mohammed Suleiman and said he was “Syria’s liaison officer with Lebanon’s Hezbollah movement.” It said he was killed by a sniper in the northwest Syrian town of Tartus and would be buried in his hometown of Driekesh on Sunday.

The Lebanese anti-Syrian daily al-Mustaqbal quoted a Syrian news site as saying Suleiman was the head of security at the presidential palace in Damascus and President Bashar al-Assad’s “right-hand man.”

It was probably the Israelis. If it was an RoP rival they would have used a car bomb to ensure innocent bystanders would also be killed.

re: #12 Killgore Trout

Good point.

14 lawhawk  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 9:55:06am

Seriously though, this could be any number of groups or entities behind the assassination. It could be Syria attempting to clean up loose ends; Hizbullah; Iran; Israel; US; Turkey; Lebanese sympathizers; etc.

It's a very long list. However, watch the list be whittled down to one by Islamists and Arabists - Israel.

*cue the spooky music*

If it was indeed Israel doing it, they definitely seem to have gotten their covert ops running in top shape given that they are also blamed for the take-out of Mugh the Thug (also in Syria).

Hmmm, Well King David used to wish that on his enemies and the Bible states that King David had a heart after God's, so I'm guessing probably not.

Or the rivals could have performed a clean assassination to make it look like the Israelis did it.

Since I see both Agence France and Al-Hayat in the report, maybe a 48-hour rule might be good on this one. Or at least wait for a news agency that doesn't have a dog in the fight to file. Just a thought.

Ya Libnan notes:

Lebanon's Future News television station identified the officer as Brigadier General Mohammad Suleiman whom it said was a military aide to Assad. It said his body was found at a hotel in the northern port city of Tartous.

According Al-Hayat sources , the Syrian authorities have been trying to prevent the publication of the news regarding Suleiman's assassination.

Syria ia going to start a war and find out it has no allies,, no military worth a damn, and that Hezbollah is a paper tiger.

The problem is that the Syrian and Hezbollah military doctrine is now based on their massive missile and rocket capabilities, which is not enough to be a decisive factor in a war with Israel, but essentially holds Israel's civilian population centers hostage. I don't doubt Syria would commit a massive war crime of indiscriminate bombardment of Israeli cities of the regime felt threatened enough. Same with Hezbollah, as we've seen. I wouldn't call either one a paper tiger.

46 realwest  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 10:10:43am

re: #33 Li'l Mamzer Well I wouldn't call Hezbollah a Paper Tiger in Lebanon, but Syria - oh yeah. Hell if the Israeli Air Force can "go deep" in Syria to take out a nuke installation, they can take out Damascus just as easily (and the Syrian Air Force, "Army" and probably most of their Rocket sites).
Hez is different - they have no intention of fighting Israel (or anyone else) "face to face" and don't really have a "country" that someone could really whack like Syria proper.
But as well trained, armed and "dug in" as they are, my money is that the IDF can take 'em - more effort than Syria, but definitely take 'em.

Possible strategy. Syria saturates Israeli missile defenses from close range and delivers one or more nukes before the Israelis can reload their launchers.

i agree, Sniper Rifle from distance, when have the arabs ever done that, i can't think of one time.

They generally prefer full auto, "spray and pray" tactics. Everyone has noticed the American tactics in Iraq with sniper teams and ROE resulting in very low civilian casualties. Snipers are gaining credibility and respectability. About 10 percent of the infantry troops have sniper training, a big increase from the previous 1 to 2 percent. Commanders love them because of their ability to quietly infiltrate and identify targets and intelligence without firing a shot.

I don't know much about Syrian politics but my bet is on the Iranians. The president of Syria is a lightweight. He's in power because his father's operators put them in power and those operators know what's going on. By eliminating as many as possible of the ones that know how to handle the country, they make Assad more dependant on the Iranians. But it's just my guess.

Israel is looking at versions of Phalanx CIWS that are trailer mounted. They have been used quiet successfully in the green zone with 90 percent success rate on knocking down incoming rockets. They go for about a million apiece, and are for point defense. Max range is about 2000 meters. I have seen these in action and they are awesome!

Gee first Al Masri and then possibly Zawahiri, and now Suleiman, in Syria, perhaps this is an August surprise from the Bush Administration and the Israelis.
I hope it wasn't the Iranians seeking to destablize Assad because of his 'talks' with Olmerde. (always a slight possibility, but one that can't be discounted outright).
Hope it was the Israelis, just to send a wake up call to Assad, that if they can get the keeper of palace security, they can get the King as well.

re: #58 pegcity

On US Sharpshooters, the Union Army had 2 regiments of them in the Civil War, formed in part by Swiss immigrants, where they had a long history of sharpshooting.

Though the name Berdan became synonymous for the sharpshooters it is not sure whether he had the original idea for a federal regiment of sharpshooters. There is some fairly reliable evidence that he got the idea from Casper Trepp, a Swiss born veteran of the Crimean war where sharpshooters fought as skirmishers and as special detail troops. What is certainly known is that Berdan promoted the idea

The test was that a volunteer had to shoot at 200 yards ten rounds into a bulls eye target and the average of between the center of the hole left by the Minnie-ball and the center of the bulls eye must not exceed five inches plus the necessity for excellent references culminated in 1,392 successful aspirants (officers and men). For the first regiment of United States Sharpshooters commanded by Col. Berdan and 1178 (all ranks) in the second regiment United States Sharpshooters commanded by Col. Henry A Post. The 2nd United States Sharpshooters had recruited by company from 8 different states and unusually had eight companies instead of the usual 10 to a regiment. Two qualified contingents of Massachusetts men decided at the last minute to offer there service to there home state, not to Berdan, had they joined they would of made up the last two companies in the 2nd regiment, giving it a full compliment of ten companies instead of the eight it had. These two companies became known as the 1st & 2nd companies of Massachusetts Volunteer Sharpshooters, they fought through the war attached to sundry bay state regiments. The 1st & 2nd regiments of United States sharpshooters were organised to fight primarily as skirmishers and as long range marksman, to be used in advance of the main body or to the flanks, to engage the enemy first to halt their advance, as well as to give early warning of their approach.

More good news:

Al Qaeda confirms WMD expert taken out by US Military "targeted strike."

Al Qaeda has confirmed that Abu (Shish) Khabab al Masri, the chief of the terror group's weapons of mass destruction program, was killed in an airstrike in South Waziristan, Pakistan earlier this week.

Khabab was one of the most wanted terrorists due to his experience, seniority, and expertise with bomb making, chemicals, and poisons.

Khabab is the third senior al Qaeda leader to have perished in Pakistan's lawless tribal regions.

I wonder what Pakistan is doing to help out here?

Interesting, I had always thought American snipers were formed from backwoods hunters and the like. I know in the civil war the south had the edge on accurate shooting, they didn't have any semi-auto weapons like the Sharps rifle and they took a beating because of it and the lack of manufacturing capability to match the north.

"...a Soviet sniper during World War II, notable particularly for his activities between November 10 and December 17, 1942 during the Battle of Stalingrad. He killed 225 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht and other Axis armies, including 11 enemy snipers."

Another interesting link I found related to this, the Swiss are obliged to be very proficient with weapons, and there are no problems with the anti-gun types;

Each September the hills around Zurich are alive — with the sound of gunfire. Nobody is alarmed, however, because they know it emanates from a bunch of teenagers doing what comes naturally to nearly every Swiss: sharpshooting. And there's nothing random about it: The 12- to 16-year-olds are participating in Knabenschiessen, the world's largest youth rifle competition, which blends the jarring report of rifle fire with the melodious ringing of cow bells.

Why won't they just release the Strategic Petroleum Reserve [okay, and if then we face an oil embargo a year from now, what do we do, Nancy?]", and of course, "save the planet!".

Does anyone know how much oil is in the reserve? I try to research it and I get a lot of different figures.

One of my customers (without my knowledge) walked next door into the county dem headquarters and handed some Obama supporters some McCain bumper stickers, and stated she was exercising her right to free speech. One of the gentlemen followed her to her car and handed her a "ticket" for "causing trouble" in the amount of $75.50. I do not know the specifics and did not see the ticket. The customer then gave the "ticket" to one of her relatives who is a prominent republican. After some research he found out that this is going on in other counties locally in N Florida also. Has anyone heard of this happening? This republican said he was just trying to scare her and the ticket is not real.

I noticed at the end of the article they were going into all the gun initiatives being forward by Swiss socialists. Here is an example of the stupidity of liberals and socialists.
"Gallard's argument is bolstered by statistics showing 300 gun-related deaths — mostly suicides — every year. "These deaths are impulsive decisions taken in the heat of the moment," says Hans Kurt, who heads the Swiss Society of Psychiatrists and Psychotherapists, and supports tougher gun-control laws. "Take away an easy access to a gun, and these tragedies are preventable."
Bullshit! Japan has some of the toughest and restrictive gun laws in the world, and they commit suicide at about the highest rate on the planet.
Poor logic to say the least...And this guy is the head of Swiss Psychiatrists....

OT - HEY all y'all - just thought I'd let you know that after I left LGF for lunch I ran my usual Spyware Doctor and my Norton Internet Anti-Virus.
Spyware Doctor didn't pick up anything but some low level bs which I wiped out.
Norton, however, picked up some infection called
"SecureExpertCleaner" which Norton classified as a Medium Threat. initial rapid release version July 28th, latest daily certified version August 2nd.
After scaring me half to death with a lot of gibberish tech language about removing it by disabling System Restore etc etc, I notice a little bitty button that said "delete infection" which I hit, and voila it was gone.
I have however updated virus def's and am now scanning all drives to verify it's gone.
According to Norton this was manually downloaded from SecureExpertCleaner.com which I know was NOT done by me and I'm the only one with access to this computer.
Anyone out there have any thoughts about this?

Very good overview. The unit I was in never got the press, but one of the greatest US snipers ever came out of it. Our division was one of the earliest to adopt a formal sniper training program .....I didn't attend :) .....

Sgt. Adelbert Waldron, 3rd Bn. 6oth Inf. Regt, 9th I.D.

...As an interesting war story, our most successful sniper was Sergeant Adelbert F. Waldron, III, who had 109 confirmed kills to his credit. One afternoon he was riding along the Mekong River on a Tango boat when an enemy sniper on shore pecked away at the boat. While everyone else on board strained to find the antagonist, who was firing from the shoreline over 900 meters away, Sergeant Waldron took up his sniper rifle and picked off the Viet Cong out of the top of a coconut tree with one shot (this from a moving platform). Such was the capability of our best sniper. We had others, too, with his matchless vision and expert marksmanship. Sergeant Waldron earned two Distinguished Service Crosses for his outstanding skill and bravery...

I don't believe so RW, but I could be wrong. From what I remember hearing about him, most of his shots were either made from helicopters, a lot of times at night with night vision equipment (extraordinary!) or from the Riverine Force's Tango boats or with regular infantry units in the field...in other words he wasn't off on his own too much, but was subordinated to others.

Real, you can pick up these viruses just surfing the net, there are a lot of questionable sites that will dump the "bug" on you. Porn sites are the worst....

So I guess my question to ALL Y'ALL in #150 presents an answer of "NO"? or NONE?

There was a DNS poisoning attack a couple of weeks ago that could have affected your machine. It would have made it possible for the attacker(s) to redirect people to websites that install or prompt users to install malicious software like that.

For example, you might have typed or clicked littlegreenfootballs, but your interent provider, if its DNS list was attacked, would have sent you to a different site.

Here'es some info on the Zlob trojan, which symantec rates as "low risk." :

"Zlob Trojan is a backdoor Trojan which can give an anonymous attacker remote control over your PC. With Zlob Trojan, this attacker can download and install malware and other files onto your computer, without your knowledge. Zlob Trojan also lets the attacker execute commands on your PC, so that the attacker can gain control of your system and disable your security. Zlob Trojan puts your personal and financial information at risk.

When you’re infected with Zlob Trojan, Zlob Trojanmay try to contact Vnp7s.net, zxserv0.com, and/or dumpserv.com to receive commands. Unless identity theft sounds like weekend fun, delete Zlob."

As others have said, they will try to trick you into downloading mal-ware with an error message claiming your machine is infected with viruses or spyware, and they just happen to have the software available to correct the issue. You click OK and the malware downloads and you are infected. On any error message like this I close the error message by doing a control/alt/delete, pull up task manager and close the window from there. Many of these error messages give you a yes and no button, and both download the virus or malware. I only use my work email which eliminates infections form E-mails.

All Arab (as well as western) news agencies have bureaus in London, Moscow, Tokyo, New York, Washington etc etc.. It's not at all surprising that they find someone in London with close ties to Syria (someone in the diplomatic mission, an international businessman) that has more up to date info than trying to get 9th hand reports from the site of the killing (ever ask 3 witnesses to the same car crash what they saw?)

I understand your point and agree with you entirely.

I wasn't clear in what I posted. I found it amusing (and hope to for a long time) when I see three or more locations attributed in a story. As for the man-on-the-street, if this story can be carried for a few days, I suppose we may just get such an account. A single rifle crack or an ambush. I believe both can be described as an assassination. The details at this point are obviously lacking.

That's odd. The usual expression is "it's a free country", Nance. And, um, by the way, it's not a "free world".

You know, I've been noticing lately that I don't hear the phrase "It's a free country" anymore, like I used to when I was a kid. Partly, I suppose, because we're not as free. Partly, it's because popular culture has turned against freedom. Pelosi's perversion of the phrase says it all.

The scary part is, that's the world isn't "free", and the main bastion of freedom is dismantling itself. As one of the most important agents of that dismantling, it's especially ironic for her to say that.

If a job like this is done right the target doesn't know who hit him, the target's companions don't know for sure who hit him and it is possible the person pulling the trigger may not know who ordered the job. With these people in a place like Syria there are so many who have good reason to want them dead that you almost have to stand in line. The regime can only respond with greater and greater levels of repression and paranoia. This of course increases alienation and complicates the security problem. When everyone is a suspect the signal to noise ratio is so poor that it becomes impossible for targets to attempt even simple daily activities. Worse, or for enemies of the regime better, everyone becomes a target but not everyone can afford protection.

They have done it before.
