Site Meter IE Bug Details

Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 11:25:13 am PDT

SANS has some details on the reason for that Site Meter problem that blocked out Internet Explorer from many sites:

We received several reports (thanks Thanos and Jim) of sites which use the Sitemeter visitor counter that were no longer loading as of last night for users with Internet Explorer 7.

It appears that during a development update of SiteMeter, their team did not take into account a known bug in this version of the browser which does not allow modification of a parent container using scripts in one of its childs (using either the innerHTML or appendChild method). This causes the browser to stop loading the site, returning an “Operation aborted” message.

SiteMeter has now resolved the issue and published a blog entry explaining what happened. Just as with advertisement providers and the republishing of RSS feeds, it’s an interesting example of how dependent our sites have become on third party code and the potential impact.

And that’s a big reason why you don’t see a lot of those gimmicky widgets at LGF. I deliberately shun third party code because I don’t want to rely on other people to keep their web servers online and their code compatible. (It helps that I programmed the entire LGF codebase, too.)

That's why we stay away from the latest releases of code for a couple of months to let others find the bugs. BBL, I gotta mow the back yard....

It's good to have a resource for computer info when major problems occur. Without LGF I would have thought it was just my computer. Thanks.

My old version of Safari 1.3.2 won't load LGF—it just fatally crashes Safari. It's on a 1.25G mac PC running OS X.3.9.

Yeah, there's no way around that, unfortunately. Version 1 of Safari had major bugs in its Javascript library. Version 2 was better, but still had a lot of bugs. Version 3 is greatly improved, and now ranks among the best JS libraries out there.

I'll just switch to looking at LGF on Firefox. Not a hard thing to do. Someday I need to upgrade my OS, but I'll probably just wait until I get a new computer.

Tech related question.

Anyone know anything about Web Cams?

I need suggestions since I know nothing. What I need is wireless, that can record on the computer. I don't have a TV and I need basically a security camera to prove a neighbor enters my apartment. $150 tops.

thanks

re: #11 Charles

With Safari 3.1.2 on a mac g5 (older one, not the new intel chip), when I click on the LGF tools to the left (eg stats), LGF at best reloads the page I'm on and sometime poofs safari altogether. I haven't upgraded to (leopard? is that the newest?) yet but I will be in the next few weeks to accommodate better the video, etc. I'm starting on for a new technology blog. I liked it when the stats were just there all the time because you could visualize the cause/effect of topics. I was looking at the BlogMastermind.com where they talk about ads on blogs, etc. Do you get your ads from PJ or do you have your own arrangements with the advertisers?

Here is another solution that might be better in the end.

18 CynicalConservative  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 11:48:34am

Good plan Charles, I gotta agree. Might be easier to plug in 3rd party stuff but dont like to be at the mercy of other servers/codbases; rather take a bit longer to build it myself.

36 Fat Bastard Vegetarian  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 12:03:31pm

Teacake...this is a little out of the box, but here's an idea.

Go to your local "Womens shelter", the police can actually point you out to one (they prefer to stay hidden), I am betting that with your situation, they have something the could lend you (and some advice) that they give to women building evidence against husbands/ boyfriends, etc.

While this is not a boyfriend/husband, it is a man stalking harrassing a woman. This is one of the purposes that they exist.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks FBV - great idea if this wasn't new orleans! LOL Cops are no help and the women's places I have a feeling are real low end. I think there is just one. Luckily I have an attorney friend who is going to help get the order. All I need is a cheap cam that records on a computer. The thing I saw at ebay looks good, but I don't know for sure.

41 jimzinsocal  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 12:07:14pm

Why the guys at SANS are a great resource.
Anything "global" in nature they jump on the issue and
have the ability to get at the specific issue. In this case
a flaw in IE 7 coupled with sitemeter not being aware
of that ongoing problem.
And you betcha. File a report with them?
You get a response.

Statement on the failed SpaceX, commerical rocket launch last night:

[Link: www.spacex.com...]

Plan Going Forward

It was obviously a big disappointment not to reach orbit on this flight [Falcon 1, Flight 3]. On the plus side, the flight of our first stage, with the new Merlin 1C engine that will be used in Falcon 9, was picture perfect. Unfortunately, a problem occurred with stage separation, causing the stages to be held together. This is under investigation and I will send out a note as soon as we understand exactly what happened.

The most important message I’d like to send right now is that SpaceX will not skip a beat in execution going forward. We have flight four of Falcon 1 almost ready for flight and flight five right behind that. I have also given the go ahead to begin fabrication of flight six. Falcon 9 development will also continue unabated, taking into account the lessons learned with Falcon 1. We have made great progress this past week with the successful nine engine firing.

As a precautionary measure to guard against the possibility of flight 3 not reaching orbit, SpaceX recently accepted a significant investment. Combined with our existing cash reserves, that ensures we will have more than sufficient funding on hand to continue launching Falcon 1 and develop Falcon 9 and Dragon. There should be absolutely zero question that SpaceX will prevail in reaching orbit and demonstrating reliable space transport. For my part, I will never give up and I mean never.

Thanks for your hard work and now on to flight four.

re: #86 Teacake!

debutaunt - guess you have no idea about lazy new orleans cops. I went to the station the first time he came in when I wasn't looking. They tried to turn it around on me and they said there was nothing they can do anyhow unless a crime was actually committed.. meaning blood or corpses I guess.

Maybe they can suggest a good spy cam? Too busy doing nothing to help you? Wow.

90 Teacake!  Sun, Aug 3, 2008 12:40:00pm

Maybe there are regular video cameras that record only when there's movement?

Yeah, NOPD sucks just as bad as Nagin.

So, these people often found water all over the deck next to their pool when they'd come home from work and suspected the neighborhood kids were swimming in it. So, they set up a camera to catch them in the act and here is what they found:

Me and that guy no longer have anything to do with each other. The creep has managed to gossip about made up things in order to have "my guy" feel sorry for him. Its a very ugly mess. My rent and apartment are just too good to move from. $450 am month for a nice place. I've been here 10 years. I'm not being driven from my home.

I think I've read everything so forgive me if I've missed this point. Have you gone to the police at all? You don't need rock-solid evidence just to file a report. It's time to get the paper trail started on this stalker. Yes, he is a STALKER.

This might already have been covered. Brokaw had Sen Kerry on this
morning & Sen Lieberman. Brokaw conservatively gave Kerry twice as much time. Kerry as usual was not informed about what he was talking about , but had the smug, liberal smirk going on.
Seeing how unfair Brokaw was with time I remembered reading his book, "The Greatest Generation".
I thought it was less than a proper homage, since he pretty much summarized, "Yeah they did some nice things like winning the War, but they were a bunch of racists." At least that's how I read it.

Michelle Obama hailed as fashion's first lady by Vanity Fair

/word choice BS

Unbelievably boorish aren't they? (Is this the word I'm looking for?)

Notable among those missing was Victoria Beckham. But given that Mrs Obama topped the lot, it was Mrs McCain who stood out most among the American absentees - and critics appeared to relish the fact.

“Clothes make the woman, after all,” wrote the New York Daily News of the snub.

“Like it or lump it, the personal style of each candidate’s wife has become an important part in establishing individuality, likability and power. Michelle Obama, who has her own favourite high-end designers, has made sure to advertise her everywoman-frugality every chance she gets.”

Keren Eldad, New York fashion manager of the Los Angeles Times, said: “McCain’s style is like the political style of her husband: conservative and outdated. It screams 'safety’ and escapes any nod to change, to risk, or to bravado. She may throw on a tailored leather jacket every once again, but through her pearls and all that hairspray, can we really detect any semblance of inspiration? Of fun?
“Obama, on the other hand, gets it. She IS a modern woman, she has fun with fashion, she embraces life with fury and grace - making apparel choices so varied, that time and again signal this woman never sees anything in life as constant. That’s change. And that is the essence of what fashion is all about”.

(Bolding is mine)

Ok, this really bugs me... Is this a sitemeter bug (the standard does not allow a script in a child to modify its parent container) or is it an IE7 bug (IE7 does not implement the standard properly) ? Why doesn't anybody care? If it is a sitemeter bug, then we should tell sites not to use sitemeter. If it is an IE bug, we should tell users not to use IE.
