I don't like the saudis much either, but then I'm not supposed to be a diplomat.

No drilling + "major oil source, you guys suck!" = the hoped for gradual rise of oil to $10.00 a gallon. Yeah!

But we will not drill for more oil domestically because ..... *chirping* so that we no longer send tens of billions to the Kingdom? Will Obama demand that the Congressional eco-leftists open up the voting on offshore oil drilling? You know - act more than just talk?

Democrats have had a majority for the bulk of the time McCain's been in the Senate - even if McCain wanted an energy policy, he would have been thwarted by the Democrat majorities.

However, the 1994 GOP majority failed to act. Of course, that happened when Clinton was in office, so again - thwarted by Democrats.

47 Ben Hur  Mon, Aug 4, 2008 9:00:44am

This problem is the result of Environmental lobbies.

Example: Wild fires.

Everytime the services wanted to do controlled burns to mimic the natural phenomenon to burn away the dry underbrush (FUEL), the nuts tie everything up in litigations.

It's the same thing with oil.

Everytime the companies make/made requests to drill, the nuts tie them up in litigation.

These oil prices are the wildfire.

Agreed. But his plan to address the issue by taxing the oil companies and giving the taxpayers another "stimulus" check sounds like the same tired old ploys we've heard before.

The one time we really got the Oil nations scared was back in 80 when we actually started to explore drilling here. They backed way off and brought prices under control so we would still need them.

Okay Barry, here's a clue.

The Terrestrial biosphere is a dynamic environment within a dynamic universe. Changes in average temperature are normal and natural. And there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Some of localized changes will of course have an impact on human populations. A free and productive society is best able to adapt to local environmental changes. The system of enforced poverty that you propose to inflict on Americans will only aggravate the damages caused by natural environmental change.

Yeah, but we were willing to play footsie with the magic kingdom and thery were willing to play with us.

We were getting oil from them for LESS than it cost us to pump our own (remember all those idle pump rigs in the central valley throughout the 90s.)

That was a good deal. We just thought (mistakenly) that the insanity of the middle east could be contained there. So did the Saudis (though they subsidized the Jihadi playground in Afganistan to keep their jihadis busy).

OPEC used to be concerned with setting off a recession with oil prices. Now they seem to be fighting the economic jihad.

They have fucked themselves.

But solar and wind won't carry the base load that industrial society needs.

Nukes are the only option.

$1000 is a bribe. Pure and simple. He's going to play Robin Hood and take from the oil companies and give to the poor taxpayers who have to pay even higher energy costs because those same companies are going to respond to any tax hike with increased charges to the taxpayers.

Instead of lowering prices, he's going to effectively increase inflation and increase energy costs - a double whammy of destructive economics on top of the already hobbled economy.

If we are to get off of oil in 10 years, that means everyone will have to drive electric vehicles. New electric vehicles.

Does Obama realize the implications for working families?

These are people who drive older cars longer distances so that they can afford housing for their families.

Who will buy them their new car? How can they sell their old one? What about vehicle range - many won't be able to do a round trip commute for under 150 miles.

Typical Democrat - a "plan" that doesn't survive cursory inspection, resulting in a supplementary plan that involves massive wealth transfers and destruction of American competitiveness.

See Amtrak - the NE corridor is limited by the amount of energy drawn off the overhead wires. And the amount of energy to pull a freight line is even higher.

You'd also have to electrify the nation's rail infrastructure, which would be an obscene cost. It's barely functional as it is, and is highly vulnerable to weather and equipment failures.

I have to admit, though, that he has a strong point when he says McCain has been part of the Washington establishment that has done absolutely nothing about energy independence for decades, even after the 70s crisis.

He's right about that. The government has completely failed to lead on this important issue.

That's true -- but most of Congress and the government bureaucracy gave in to intimidation from the environmental extremists.... and that's pressure from the Left.

I think it was McGovern, actually...who seems like Curtis LeMay compared to Obama.

Don't forget that a few weeks ago, Obama claimed that if we'd taken the money we spent in Iraq and spent it on R & D, we could have "found a new way to transport people." We weren't sure if he meant "teleporter" or "magic carpet."

His real plan is for YOU to not eat too much, learn French or Spanish, stop being uninvolved and uninformed, inflate your tires, lower your thermostat, help him steal money from oil and drug companies, tax those who actually earn money and stop being a cynic.

Spare change you can believe in!

Thank you. More fodder for advertising, the advert should be called "New Ideas or Old Ideas?" Run old speeches of failed democrats pushing failed ideas and then Obama repeating them, like his repeating other campaign speeches from other clients of his handlers, the guy is a shameless fraud.

If you look around you, as I'm sure many here have, you will realize that we've built a society that is totally Dependant on cheap energy. Without cheap energy our society will collapse, and many, many people will suffer. We are as vulnerable to oil shortage now as European society was Dependant on their yearly wheat crop. One bad year meant starvation for millions. Without cheap oil, there is no cheap food. Third world countries Dependant on America's abundance will starve first, then will come the dimmicratic voter base.

Solar is space intensive, the collectors are inefficient (20%). You need silicon wafer foundries to make them. Solar is farther out for wide scale practical use than many think.

Yes we need the alternative. But we have the oil to bridge us to the next energy economy.

I report as an architect that the government has not done anything to encourage the passive solar design of buildings which would save a lot of energy, and since the 1970s millions of new buildings have been built that did not incorporate the almost costless features that would save many many gallons of oil equivalent per building per winter.

What I've never understood is why the government always 'needs to encourage' initiatives that 'costlessly save energy'.

Dood, if someone told me 'do this in your house and you'll save 10% of your energy bill at no added cost', I'd jump at it (after checking that the claim was in fact true), with absolutely no need whatsoever for the government to 'encourage' me.

Why would corporations behave differently? The only logical explanation that I can think of is that these claims are not true. What other reason can there be for companies not to take costless or very low-cost energy saving measures?

Yes, Obama's Senate seat is up in 2010. It is suspected that he will lose the next time he is up for re-election. Obama's track record of being re-elected is as good as Markos's track record.

How dare CNN do that!

The Democrats do not have an energy policy that is worth anything. We need to increase production of nuclear, oil, and coal energies. We need to increase supplies in this country instead of sending money to these countries that hate us. The Dems want to tax oil companies and sue OPEC. Well, that will probably raise prices higher, but that is the whole point I suppose.

I particularly find it offensive that the whole purpose of the Democrats in this whole debate is "saving the planet". The fact is that they can't possibly prove that the planet is in any more danger because of more oil production. What kind of arrogance it takes to claim that they are the protectors of the planet. Think about the wealth that has been created around the world since oil came into use. Think of the wealth that has been created, and therefore better lives, since third world countries began using more oil. The Democrats would just assume hurt everyone by shutting down our economy. But worse they would just assume hurt the poor of the world that can't possibly afford the kind of energy they want to put online.

The CNN coverage leads off with:

(CNN) -- Barack Obama on Monday called for tapping into strategic oil reserves as part of his plan to provide relief from high gas prices.
Obama has previously said he was opposed to using the strategic reserves.

Flip-Flop aside, how do he and his Democratic comrades intend to get around this little math problem?

Strategic Oil Reserves = 706M barrels
Daily Consumption, US = 20M barrels

We could consume the entire reserve in 5 weeks.

Please correct my numbers if wrong, but that's how it looks to me.

Where do you think these "Credits" come from, but from OTHER tax payers?

These are reparations schemes that don't solve the immediate problem of restricted supply.

SELF-restricted supply, because we have one hand tied behind our back by the gloom & doom & naysayers.

We can have cleaner production of oil & gas with new technology. We can have more energy-producing jobs.

Yes, Obama's Senate seat is up in 2010. It is suspected that he will lose the next time he is up for re-election. Obama's track record of being re-elected is as good as Markos's track record.

The sole reason he got into office is that the candidacy of the Republican opposing him for the empty Senate seat was completely and utterly destroyed.

Obama has never won an honest one on one campaign fight. There has always been something underhanded lifting him. He is a one shot wonder. If he loses he will dissolve but he may not go quietly. After all what else can he and the Mrs. do? Teach Junior High? They may be able to practice some kind of law and stay out of trouble but I'm skeptical.

INTERESTING

----- Think you know who this man is? Is this REALLY someone we can see as the
President of our great nation!
Below are a few lines from Obama's books; In his words!

From Dreams of My Father: 'I ceased to advertise my mother's race at the age of 12 or 13, when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites.'
From Dreams of My Father : 'I found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity against my mother's race.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'There was something about him that made me wary, a little too sure of himself, maybe. And white.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'It remained necessary to prove which side you were on, to show your loyalty to the black masses, to strike out and name names.'
From Dreams of My Father: 'I never emulate white men and brown men whose fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.'

And FINALLY the Most Damming one of ALL o f them!
From Audacity of Hope: 'I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.'

* If you have never forwarded an e-mail, now is the time to Do so! We CANNOT have someone with this type of mentality running our GREAT nation! I don't care whether you a Democrat or a Conservative. We CANNOT turn ourselves over to this type of character in a President. PLEASE help spread the word!

re: #323 maddogg

All societies throughout time have been built on the availability of energy. Be it slave and peasant energy in ancient times, steam engines in the 1800s, electricity in the 1900s or whatever. When a major disruption in the energy supply such as happened in the 1300s with the Black Death, the entire society changed. Similar in the 1800s. A command economy on energy will almost certainly yield a bad result.

Consider what would happen if we were to become "energy independent". This would free the oil, etc. that we import and reduce the cost to places like China. Needless to say, the price of "energy independence" in today's economy is much more expensive than "energy dependence". The Chinese would be able to undercut us in any and all markets where we compete.

BO, there ain't no free lunch.

I have to admit, though, that he has a strong point when he says McCain has been part of the Washington establishment that has done absolutely nothing about energy independence for decades, even after the 70s crisis.

He's right about that. The government has completely failed to lead on this important issue.

He's completely right about that. But, since he's preparing to drive us into the 1970's part 2 I can't see where he's got any ideas.
