We seem to be having some kind of obscure DNS problem with our web server, so here’s an open thread while Stinky and I rip up the floorboards...

On the other hand, there are those of us who would argue that paranoid delusions about the impact on educational policy of a minority faith community who comprise less than 3% of the population of the UK are quite accurately categorisable as Islamophobia.

Good news, my hell neighbors are finally gone. My fear they were just moving across the street was unfounded. Turns out they were to cheap to get a truck so they just offered most of their furnature to neighbors to come and take it. All the people remaining in the building had a BBQ last night to celebrate. Of course now, we get word this morning from the landlord that she found where the bug problem we had came from when she did the final inspection of the evictees place. Now they get to fumigate.

Marvin the Paranoid Android from the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy was really depressed, not paranoid.

He has a brain the size of a planet, yet is rarely given the chance to use it. Mostly he finds himself waiting several million years to park cars for an exclusive restaurant, being dropped several miles on to solid rock, and being left to defend himself against awesome military technology.

It is interesting that people actually think Obama is a "new" politician, given the fact that he was able to use his Chicago political skills to get the Clenis painted as a racist.

Good thing that McCain didn't take any of his "dollar bill" shit and made it backfire on him. Without racial politics, the Obama campaign has little to fall back on - certainly not Obama's record of accomplishment.

Rejoice & Revolt~to victory...
Obama's tire gauge is reminiscent of Jimmy Carter's sweater.

* * *
Kristol: The Energy Revolt of 2008?

The Boss emails some observations from the road:

Larry Kudlow makes an interesting suggestion in his article on NRO:

As Sen. John McCain and the GOP leadership nationalize the drill, drill, drill message, the Republican party might conceivably be riding a summer political rally. The question of offshore drilling, along with expanded domestic energy production, has suddenly become the biggest political and economic wedge issue of this election....There is a voter revolt going on, and it reminds me of the anti-tax rebellion that lifted Ronald Reagan into office twenty-eight years ago. Is the conventional wisdom about to be swept away?...

Without even realizing it, the GOP drilling offensive has become a new contract with America. And it appears to be working. The public is putting aside global warming and choosing instead new-energy production, a stronger economy, and more job creation. Voters want growth, not austerity. They want Ronald Reagan, not Thomas Malthus. And by resisting this grassroots call, the Democratic party is digging itself into one of the biggest political dry holes in history.

I've had the contrarian instinct for a while that global warming had peaked (both substantively and politically) as an issue. Al Gore's Nobel Prize felt like a pretty good contrarian indicator. And now the drilling issue is beginning to feel a little like tax cuts thirty years ago--key to, and emblematic of, a pro-growth, populist/capitalist/anti-declinist agenda. Obama's tire gauge is reminiscent of Jimmy Carter's sweater. And leave aside the tax revolt analogy; it's worth remembering that energy itself was an issue in 1980. Reagan took what seemed at first a politically dicey drill/deregulate position, and ended up clobbering Carter and being vindicated by the policy of deregulation.

Wishful thinking? Or the lessons of history?

It is interesting that "oil-friendly policies" are supposed to be ipso facto suspect. That these suspect policies are "crafted by the unpopular vice-president," of course, is intended to render them doubly nefarious.

"Oil-friendly policies," of course, is merely a loaded term for "trying to ensure that the economy gets the energy it needs."

Whats the matter with you buzz? The economy doesn't need more energy, what it needs is less energy. Less energy for food production and distribution, for medical facilities, for transportation and most especially less energy for that damned pesky defense dept.

Local, state and federal government proved that we must protect ourselves.

It's not just about protecting yourself. There's only so much you can do after a big storm hits and God forbid you end up living in an uninhabitable home.

I've been through many storms, starting with Andrew in 92. It costs a lot of money to prepare, for one thing, to buy all your supplies. Money a lot of people don't have.

The F*ups in New Orleans were everywhere from local to federal to personal. Of course N.O. had some unusual problems because of the flooding. We don't have that issue in S. Fla., certainly not to that extent anyway.

Agreed. McCain should insist that the rules stipulate that the Press may not speak for more than 30 seconds at a time and for no more than 3 minutes each cumulative. Also he should insist that the candidates must be allowed to question each other directly twice in each question round.

123 karmic_inquisitor  Tue, Aug 5, 2008 11:09:40am

Mort Kondracke makes an excellent point today:

If the going gets rough in Afghanistan, will a party that wanted to pull out of the Iraq "quagmire" at the first sign of trouble really back President Obama as he wages war, or will Democrats fracture as they did over the Vietnam War 40 years ago?

A Gallup Poll last week showed signs of potential trouble. While Americans generally believe -- by a margin of 68 percent to 28 percent -- that it was correct for the U.S. to send troops to Afghanistan, a full 41 percent of Democrats believe it was a mistake.

Only 55 percent of Democrats believe it was a correct move, as compared with 88 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Independents.

Almost certainly, Democrats will heavily dominate Congress next year. They -- and Obama, too -- have extensive domestic priorities to meet and will face a huge budget deficit at the outset. Will they want another war to dominate their agenda?

Democrats continue to be out of touch.

NOAA shows the name list through 2013. Sheila Jackson Lee can decide for herself if the names are 'black' enough.

Is it racist to say that you can make a name 'blacker' just by putting La' in front of it? (No offense intended) I got a 50,000 baby name book in 2000 that seemed to do just that. They easily added 25% to their numbers with that and similar tricks.

I doubt that many of you have seen this, it is after all HuffPo. But there is some worthwhile stuff here amongst the horsecrap.

Obama returned from Europe triumphant. An America that yearns to regain the world's respect...

Oh, puleeze.

Could Barack Obama possibly get any luckier? It turns out, yes, he can. The caricature of everything wrong with the Republican party, the longest-serving, biggest-spending, pork-devouring Republican in Washington, Senator Ted Stevens, has been indicted on seven felony charges. A timely poster-boy for Republican corruption, he will be cooked publicly on his own clandestinely secured Viking grill.

Well, okay. Point taken.

Despite the McCain campaign's effectiveness, however, the best campaign against Barack Obama is not being run by his opponent, but by Barack Obama.

Word.

In the defining moment of his life, McCain was willing to give everything for one thing, and that one thing was his country. Contrast that with Obama, who has told America that he is "a proud citizen of the United States and a fellow citizen of the world.

Preach it Brother, preach it.

John McCain is a complete and well-formed man. Barack Obama is completing himself. As he moves to fit what he perceives to be a right-of-center country, he distances himself from the simple and authentic passion of a young candidate who once pledged "Change We Can Believe In."

This is the trap Barack Obama has made for himself, the one he cannot escape, the one Hillary Clinton foresaw, the one that may doom him. The Obama campaign knows it too. In fear the dream is being lost drop-by-drop, they are going negative on John McCain.

Whoa now Brother. I'm not so sure I'd have preached that. You're likely to get run off the plantation preaching that.

Moveon dot org ready to rumble and Betray US, on energy this time.

From The Hill, “MoveOn Plans to Push Back Hard Against House GOP” by Klaus Marre

Here’s perhaps the best news of the morning! MoveOn is going to mark out the “don’t drill” territory of the energy debate as its own. Perhaps the organization can play the same constructive role it did when David Petraeus testified before congress:

MoveOn is planning to get involved.

“Republicans have been escalating their attacks on [Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.)] and the Democrats over oil drilling, and we need to push back hard,” the group said in an e-mail to supporters, asking them to come to a 4 p.m. rally at the Capitol.

“Speaker Pelosi blocked their plan because it won't help lower gas prices—but it will line the pockets of Big Oil executives, the same people donating millions of dollars to Republicans,” the e-mail said. “But Republicans are working hard to make it seem like they're fighting for cash-strapped commuters—and not the oil companies who wrote their plan.”

The group plans to point to the ties between the GOP and Big Oil.

“We’ve invited the media, and having a good crowd is critical to show them that voters don’t want oil industry gimmicks—they want real solutions like alternative energy to solve our energy crisis,” the e-mail said.

MoveOn acknowledged that “Republicans have been dominating the debate around gas prices for weeks with their sham drilling plan,” adding that the House protest is “getting a lot of press coverage.”

Is it just my impression, or has the left been curiously anxious to bestow a wealth of gifts on the McCain campaign recently?

Well Obama is a real idiot, because Obama was in Youngstown OH when he said it. There are oil wells in Youngstown - the pepper the country side. Most of the oil was extracted decades ago, but some wells still pump.

Here are the yellow pages for oil well servicing companies in Youngstown.

Where the oil fields and top wells are. Northern Ohio. Southern Ohio.

Picture if you will the poor weatherguesser standing in the blast of the wind and rain whilst trying to get out all three names of the storm.

I hope you get a chance to listen to it.

Prager says he will have Behe back. Perhaps the two of you . . . ? Boy, that would be a good listen . . .

Reminds of the go-cart we had as kids. Nothing but wood, some little tires, steered by a rope and no brakes. We'd go down the street in front of our house and steer (?) it into our front yard. Braking was done by dragging our feet. It's amazing none of us didn't get got killed. Ah, the good old days.

Brain fart. PIMF.

That's odd. Why did that make him angry?

I need to be able to listen to it again. My impression was that Mr. Prager seemed to think Michael was saying that a scientist's personal beliefs would prevent him from performing his job properly. That wasn't Michael's point but he didn't have an opportunity to explain it more fully.

Eeeeek. It all happened so fast.

Gribbenes are chicken-skin cracklings, fried in chicken fat, used as a garnish.

I'm guessing that under the new Transfat Prohibitions their use subjects cook and consumer both to fine and possible imprisonment.

And the chicken doesn't get off scott-free, neither.

I wonder if "scot-free" is an ethnic slur--along the lines of "Dutch courage" as a euphemism for drunkenness--relating to the alleged tightfistedness of the Scots?

Ahem!

290 madisonsfriend  Tue, Aug 5, 2008 12:26:34pm

Gribbnes- it is a natural fat- not a trans fat. It is artery clogging but a natural form .So if you make your gribbnes from organic chickens who lived a fine life and were humanely dipatched by their own choice- I think you can eat gribbnes in California. It helps to sprinkle them with a little lipitor before eating

In the "Scottish Play," after listening to the predictions of the weird sisters, MacBeth turns to Banquo and says, "Sounds like the haggis right on the money."

I am in awe of your word play! The best I can do is to quote:

I understand the inventor of the bagpipes was inspired when he saw a man carrying an indignant, asthmatic pig under his arm. Unfortunately, the man-made object never equalled the purity of sound achieved by the pig. -Alfred Hitchcock

re: #274 buzzsawmonkey

Serious question. It never occurred to me before, but I suspect there's a chance that "scot-free" does, in fact, have its roots in ethnic stereotype.

Now, this is interesting.

further, these languages use similarly spelled (and I assume sounding) words for the same concept:

Danish: uden at noget var sket

swedish: gå skottfri

Norwegian: komme uskadd,

Latvian: neskarts

Just saw Mitt on Cavuto's show, talking about energy. Reminded me of my assessment of him while he was still running: "Mitt gets it on energy".

I was excited to see that he came to the same conclusion that I did about Obama: He hasn't flipped-flopped on offshore drilling - he's still against it. Mitt pointed out, however, that he's trying to make the people on both sides of that issue sound like he's with them (go figure!). Mitt vowed not to let BHO get away with it.
