Kurtz: Barack Obama's Lost Years

Tue, Aug 5, 2008 at 11:36:19 am PDT

Stanley Kurtz has an article in the Weekly Standard about the more than 40 columns Barack Obama wrote for the Hyde Park Herald between 1996 and 2004: Barack Obama’s Lost Years.

Obama moved to Chicago in order to place himself in what he understood to be the de facto “capital” of black America. For well over 100 years, the Chicago Defender has been the voice of that capital, and therefore a paper of national significance for African Americans. Early on in his political career, Obama complained of being slighted by major media, like the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. Yet extensive and continuous coverage in both the Chicago Defender and the Hyde Park Herald presents a remarkable resource for understanding who Obama is. Reportage in these two papers is particularly significant because Obama’s early political career-the time between his first campaign for the Illinois State Senate in 1995 and his race for U.S. Senate in 2004-can fairly be called the “lost years,” the period Obama seems least eager to talk about, in contrast to his formative years in Hawaii, California, and New York or his days as a community organizer, both of which are recounted in his memoir, Dreams from My Father. The pages of the Hyde Park Herald and the Chicago Defender thus offer entrée into Obama’s heretofore hidden world.

What they portray is a Barack Obama sharply at variance with the image of the post-racial, post-ideological, bipartisan, culture-war-shunning politician familiar from current media coverage and purveyed by the Obama campaign. As details of Obama’s early political career emerge into the light, his associations with such radical figures as Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Father Michael Pfleger, Reverend James Meeks, Bill Ayers, and Bernardine Dohrn look less like peculiar instances of personal misjudgment and more like intentional political partnerships. At his core, in other words, the politician chronicled here is profoundly race-conscious, exceedingly liberal, free-spending even in the face of looming state budget deficits, and partisan. Elected president, this man would presumably shift the country sharply to the left on all the key issues of the day-culture-war issues included. It’s no wonder Obama has passed over his Springfield years in relative silence.

I would point out here that a "capital" is a part of a column, which is a phallic symbol, and therefore what Kurtz is doing here is stoking the racist panic of typical white people of black male sexual superiority.

Obama's butt is in such a crack -

He is pissing off his leftist supporters so much that they put up an "open letter" in The Nation today, complete with signers ranging from Juan Cole to Harold Zinn.

They are demanding that he go back to his previous "sensible" policies that he advocated in the primaries.

I was going to ask why this is the first that we've heard about Obama's "lost years" but I really shouldn't be surprised. His supporters haven't bothered to look beyond his carefully constructed facade and the msm certainly haven't either.

I find it increasingly disturbing that Obama might be our next President and I wish the Republicans had a stronger candidate.

And the story doesn't end with Obama's support for set-asides. A Chicago Defender story of 1999 features a front-page picture of Obama beside the headline, "Obama: Illinois Black Caucus is broken." In the accompanying article, although Obama denies demanding that black legislators march in perfect lockstep, he expresses anger that black state senators have failed to unite for the purpose of placing a newly approved riverboat casino in a minority neighborhood. The failed casino vote, Obama argues, means that the black caucus "is broken and needs to unite for the common good of the African-American community." Obama continues, "The problem right now is that we don't have a unified agenda that's enforced back in the community and is clearly articulated. Everybody tends to be lone agents in these situations."

I call BS and take offense at Chicago being the "black capital".

Oakland is, always has been.

Home of the black everything. From black panthers to black muslim bakery to black hall of fame and more.

The place where Ebonics, the language of blacks was "invented" and where the first modern black mayor allowed 3500 non-black houses to burn down in a tragic fire in 1991. (Elihu Harris)

The city where the black mayor's son was found with 300 grand in cash and pounds of cocaine in the truck (Lionel Wilson).

The place where drive-by shooting were re-invented (ok, Chicago gangsters invented them in the 20s but they went dormant for 50-60 years or so until Oakland resurected them).

Ditto for Oakland being the place where carjackings were invented.

The city where blacks sued the cops and won, forcing them to paint patrol cars from "black" and white to a light blue and white color.

I could go on but really......Oakland is the black capital.
You can't mention the town without the first thought on someone's mind being that it is a black city.
Even New Orleans....first thought is Bourbon Street.
Chicago....first thought would be windy city, maybe Al Capone, perhaps the cubbies, but not being "the black capital".

My ebonics is a bit rusty as I have been out of Oakland for many years now but man, that's some messed up shit callin' Chi-town duh black capital. It be Oakland.

Get a load of this doubletalk.

Iran gave no concrete response to an incentives offer by world powers to halt its nuclear program but said in a letter it would give a clear reply as soon as possible, according to extracts obtained by Reuters.

"Iran is ready to provide a 'clear response' to your proposal at the earliest possibility, while simultaneously expecting to receive your 'clear response' to our questions and ambiguities as well," according to an extract of the letter delivered to European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Tuesday in Brussels.

The one-page letter to Solana, who represents the United States, China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany on the Iran nuclear issue, said Tehran had "carefully considered" views put forward by officials from the six countries at a meeting in Geneva last month but certain issues needed to be clarified.

"Such mutual clarification can pave the way for a speedy and transparent negotiating process with bright prospect," said the letter, which has not been officially released.

One Western official who had seen the letter, which was circulated to capitals on Tuesday, said it said "absolutely nothing" and no concrete proposals were made by Tehran.

People who could address this are so afraid of being labelled "racist" that they just steer clear, figuring damage is minimal.

But the damage is not minimal . . . and the organization stands to get stronger.

It's the profs on a tenure track who are under such intense pressure to publish, not the adjuncts. Now the U of Chicago might be different. Does anyone know?

Police, bomb-makers among a dozen killed in Afghanistan

In Paktika province, which adjoins Ghazni, two men were killed when a waistcoat they were packing with bombs for use in a suicide attack exploded, the government said.

"Two mullahs (prayer leaders) were killed when a suicide vest they were building went off prematurely," said Zemarai Bashary, spokesman for the interior ministry, which handles police matters.

The pair was in a mosque near the border with Pakistan, he said.

So glad to see Charles made a thread on this article. I read it and posted on it late on the 8/3 RIP: Alexander Solzhenitsyn thread.(#486)
This part is one of the things I think is really important and think people should be aware of;

"According to Burnside and Whitehurst, other than social welfare and a bit of government regulation, "Obama devoted very little time to most policy areas."
This brings us to what is perhaps the most striking result of our tour through Obama's Springfield days. Conventional wisdom has it that John McCain holds a political advantage over Obama on war and foreign policy issues, while Obama is favored to handle the economy. Yet Obama's economic experience is largely limited to social welfare spending. Indeed, precisely because of his penchant for spending, Obama's fingerprints are all over Illinois's burgeoning fiscal crisis."[Link: [Link: www.weeklystandard.com...]...]

The Weekly Standard isn't The Main Stream Media. It's a conservative publication. MSM is ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, Time, Newsweek, NY Times, Washington Post - the supposedly mainstream, unbiased media.

And of the bunch, when it comes to the Obama, the WaPo is starting to veer into the realm of truth-telling reporting laced with sarcasm. It's been said the WaPo wants to take over 'the paper of record' title from the self-destructing NYSlimes. Interesting times, indeed.

I always thought Atlanta was considered the black capital. It's the birthplace of Martin Luther King, Jr. and center of the civil rights movement. It's had black mayors exclusively since 1974. Atlanta has a huge black community and is one of the centers of hip-hop music. It's the home of Morehouse and Spelman, the top HBUCs for men and women, respectively. Young black professionals and college graduates gravitate here every year.

I don't.

137 Kenneth  Tue, Aug 5, 2008 12:12:24pm

From Kurtz's report:

Also in 1998, according to the Hill, a Washington newspaper, Obama was one of only three Illinois state senators to vote against a proposal making it a criminal offense for convicts on probation or on bail to have contact with a street gang. A year later, on a vote mandating adult prosecution for aggravated discharge of a firearm in or near a school, Obama voted "present," and reiterated his opposition to adult trials for even serious juvenile offenders. In short, when it comes to the issue of crime, Obama is on the far left of the political spectrum and very much in synch with his active political allies Ayers and Dohrn.

Obama's signature crime legislation was his effort to combat alleged racial discrimination by the Illinois police. In 2003, the Defender said Obama had "made a career" out of his annual battle for a bill against racial profiling. For years, profiling legislation was bottled up by the Illinois senate's Republican leader. When senate control shifted to the Democrats in 2003, Obama's racial profiling bill finally passed-just in time to give his drive for the U.S. Senate nomination a major boost. At the time, Obama touted his profiling bill as "a model for the nation." It's also said that Obama showed a willingness to listen to police during the negotiations that led to the final bill. With the Democrats in control, however, the police had little choice but to work with Obama. As Obama himself made clear at the time, the police never abandoned their opposition to the bill.

Obama's hardcore base are just fine with this, but the political middle , where Obama must get the votes to win, believes in law & order. They're not going to be happy to hear about Obama's real record on crime.

re: #74 Adrenalyn

I'm afraid none of this makes a bit of difference. His "empty years" full of apartment house payoffs, associations with racist and criminal types, representing gang members and all the other associated behavior usually found in some of the worst Chicago type politicians. His inability to formulate a coherent thought without the aid of a teleprompter. His consistent use of the "race card". His pandering to the ultra leftists until he had his candidacy cinched and switched to what he thinks is a more moderate stance. The Che shirts and posters. The blatant courting of Europeans and the use of the Berlin monument. The socialist America hating wife. The list goes on and on and on. None of this makes a bit of difference.

Why? Simply because of folks like my neighbors. They simply do not care who or what he/she is, as long as they are a....DEMOCRAT. That is all that matters to many of these life long Democrats and they are proud of that fact. My immediate next door neighbor is a racist and any five minute conversation will reflect that fact. However, he will now vote for Obama. Why? Because he is a Democrat.

That is what is faced in this coming election.

Obama loses support among his strongest demographic groups

* McCain gained 20% and Obama lost 16% among voters ages 18-29. Obama still leads that group, 49%-38%.
* Among women, McCain closed 10 points on Obama, who still leads by a 43%-38% margin.
* Obama has lost what was an 11% lead among Independents. He and McCain are now tied.
* Obama had some slippage among Democrats, dropping from 83% to 74%.
* Obama’s support among single voters dropped by 19%, and he now leads McCain, 51%-37%.
* Even with African-Americans and Hispanics, Obama shows smaller margins.

I am flbbergasted at the thought process, "Gas companies charge too much, so let's add to their costs. That'll get them to lower their prices."

I don't think taxing profits will affect gas prices at all, but it will lessen the oil companies' ability to work on new oil finds and alternate energy sources.

Some really bad political advice I hope Obama takes:

The past few elections have been dominated by images of Democrats mountain climbing, duck hunting and motorcycle riding. Obama’s attempt at bowling was in this tradition. Once again, Democrats will face a choice: do the equivalent of putting their candidate in a tank or do something completely different. And if the Democrats go in this direction again, they will face a torrent of ads ridiculing them. Republicans have proved adept at convincing voters that there is too much risk in electing a Democrat, and that is where they are likely to focus their energies again.

So here is a radical suggestion: Rather than sparring on the Republican playing field to determine the rougher and tougher leader, Democrats should introduce more clearly substantive differences. How about this for a message — ending the war in Iraq now, making an Apollo-like investment in alternative energy and starting a revolution in health care to cover every American. I suggest making clear that this election is not about who is strong or weak, but about who is right or wrong. Maybe the key will be to emphasize that there will be real policy differences between a Democrat and a Republican in the White House next year and that those differences will... make all of the difference in the world to the country and the lives of its people.

Go for it Obama, lead from the left. Yeah, that's the ticket!

We have many rotaries/ roundabouts here on Cape. An old boss of mine, when I was 16, taught me how to approach them, and his advice was this, ( as I was cowering and clinging to the dashboard, praying for my life), "They will stop when they see your not going to".
He was right.

Great pic of McCain. I was beginning to think the media would never release any good pics of McCain with large crowds. This love affair the msm has with Obama is nauseating. Even on the radio - was listening to the news and they said Obama has denied flipping on the drilling issue, then they play his actual remarks; the announcer closed the segment by saying McCain aggressively disagrees with Obama. End of story. That's it. Only Obama gets the soundbite, McCain just gets a mention.

Since there was now a car behind me I sped up to get past the guy and get out of the way. Of course he sped up too. Many years ago when TV did not have to treat everyone as dull children one of the network news outlets on a slow day had a Foreign Correspondent illustrate with a easel and paper cars how the different nations in Europe went around a traffic circle. There was the English way, very courteous. The German way, very efficient and proper. There was the Italian way. Little pictures of cars all piled on top of each other. My dad once had a very bad experience at the Route 1/130 circle, ending up in the wrong lanes and sort of endlessly looping around. It happened before I was born, but I think, as they say, alcohol may have been a factor.

A jughandle is a type of ramp or slip road that changes the way traffic turns left (when driving on the right). Instead of a standard left turn being made...

Driving 90 on the Schuylkill next to someone doing the same 6 inches from you? Again, no problem. Doing this when the rest of traffic is going 60?

I agree, but I used this info about O's being at the university for 12 years without publishing anything with my professor son, who now has tenure and remains under extreme pressure to publish. He shot it down by declaring O to be an adjunct prof in no need of publishing. I just want to know that what I am reading in the mag is the truth, so I can use it! Anyone know about this? If I am going to use these arguments, I want to be right!

Your son is absolutely right that adjuncts have no compelling need to publish............assuming they are content to remain adjunct for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, to have published nothing at all in 12 years of teaching is rather bizarre and would not look good on a resume, even if you are not seeking a tenure-track position. You have to do something to show that you have kept up with the scholarship in your field, even if you are not doing original research.

It is possible that in law the situation is rather different, of course.
I nevertheless find it amazing that a president of Harvard Law Review and a 12 yr adjunct professor has not published ANY academic work at all.
