The fact that they are using an iconic American brand name in Fallujah - even if it is unauthorized - still speaks volumes about how much the situation has turned around.

Franchise Frowns in the Face of Facts in Fallujah Fake Fried Fowl Fiasco

33 Silhouette  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:07:13pm

It took me a second to figure out what they were implying, but I understand now that because the restaurant with the KFC sign does not have an association with the real KFC in any way, this somehow proves the Fox News presents false news, Republicans lie, and Fallujah is still a hot bed of conflict.

It's their fautography/memogate moment! They've caught Fox "manufacturing" news. How proud they must be.

34 The Other Les  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:07:50pm

35 CommonCents  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:08:07pm

Who gives a crap. It's Fallujah, there is a chicken place (that looks famaliar), our soldiers can get food there, chickens are being fried not people. That's progress in my book.

Next.

76 zombie  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:35:53pm

I don't think this is much of a huge story. All over the third world, local "entrepreneurs" try to emulate this or that American or European corporate product -- either a direct faux pirated imitation (like a fake Gucci handbag, or this fake KFC), or a subtly different knockoff ("Coke-a-Cola" etc.). Just a way to attract customers.

Actually, the very fact that an American restaurant chain would be seen as such high status that it was worth copying is good news in itself: it shows the Iraqis value Americanism and American products.

I believe that in this instance, Li's psychiatric assessment is of greater importance than his "religion" (whatever that was)...There have also been further updates (clarifications) on this story. A few days ago it was reported (and believed) that Li was "an immigrant" who had lived in Canada for 4 years. Now, (with his most recent court appearance), it's been determined that Li is a Canadian citizen and that he has lived in Canada for 7 years...(there's a span of time which is still unaccounted for). (He worked at the church in Winnipeg for approx. 6 months, then left Winnipeg, Manitoba for Edmonton, Alberta. There are also reports that he spent some time in a psychiatric ward in Alberta.)

Asked how KFC was working with the military, Lecureuil wrote only that: "Concerning the military, we have a long-standing and excellent relationship with them as we have quite a few KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut stores in military bases outside the US."

I won't touch fast food, I just do not like it. But if I did like it, I would be patronizing these spots much more often based on the above statement.

It's actually an enlightened metaphor for the war. In the cause of freedom, justice, and the American way, we have launched an optional war that pretends to uphold all of the traditional values, but which has made a mockery of those traditions.

Paris's sex tape did more to make her a celeb than anything else. Having a sex tape 'accidentally' released is an almost sure ticket to stardom among generation Y.

And thus Western civilization crumbles a bit more.

Those tapes certainly didn't hurt her career in, umm... whatever her "career" is.

I wonder if some of our more progressive institutions of higher learning will start offering degree programs in "celebrity".

Plague of lawyers is much worse than a plague of locusts. The locusts leave after they've eaten everything. The plague of lawyers would have the dead disinterred for the gold and silver just because the dead once ate at the eatery.

Was watching The News Hour. Judy Woodruff has two guests, one a left wing Arab female journalist the other a left wing academic, going over what a disaster Iraq is and why the surge wasn't a real success. Not even the usual sacrificial third seat for a trained Republican or trained moderate. The theme was that since the Iraqi Parliament went on a 5 week break without passing an election law they are worthless hacks who deserve to be cut off by the Americans. No comment on how the Democrats in the US Congress just went off on vacation without passing an energy bill.

Basically a moot point.  It's a famous American-branded store titled "KFC" with a picture of Colonel Sanders and selling fried chicken to the Iraqi people.

A clear success for Western Civilization.

A clear loss for the losers at "Talking Points Memo" performing the "investigative" work of our enemies in an attempt to discredit a clear sign of American success in Iraq.

162 Throbert McGee  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 7:40:28pm

re: #76 zombie

I don't think this is much of a huge story. All over the third world, local "entrepreneurs" try to emulate this or that American or European corporate product

Including Brooklyn! When I lived in Park Slope (1997-2003), the following mom & pop restaurants were within walking distance of me:

Kansas Fried Chicken
Kennedy Fried Chicken
JFK Fried Chicken

...and last but not least...

K o nt o cky Fried Chicken

(Yes, in the last example, it was obvious that the outdoor sign had originally said "Kentucky," because the two o's didn't quite match the rest of the letters.)

I should emphasize that none of them ripped off KFC's color scheme or the Colonel branding -- just the name.

And the type of fried chicken take-out places I'm talking about were definitely an NYC institution -- invariably they would have gyros/doner/shawarma plus a range of deep-fried snacks (such as "Jalapeño Poppers") in addition to the chicken 'n' biscuits.

Basically a moot point.  It's a famous American-branded store titled "KFC" with a picture of Colonel Sanders and selling fried chicken to the Iraqi people.

By the way, if you are familiar with the Arabic alphabet it's easy to sound out the words on the store's sign:

mlk ad-djaaj al-kntaakii

Note that in Arabic, as in Hebrew, short vowels are generally not written, though certain long vowels are. And since I don't speak Arabic, I have no idea where the short vowels would go, so there are probably a few missing in my transliteration!

But anyway, al-kntaakii is obvious, and a little Googling reveals that djaaj means "chicken," so mlk can presumably be translated as "fried."

165 Throbert McGee  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 8:04:50pm

re: #163 The Other Les

Photo of obviously fake KFC bag.

Aha -- following up on my #164, the Arabic word I couldn't identify, mlk, has got to be malik -- meaning "king," not "fried." (Note the crown design on the Iraqi KFC bag.)

Thus, the Arabic name of the restaurant in full is malik ad-djaaj al-kntaakii -- translating to "King of Chickens from Kentucky," or something approximately like that.
