All over the third world, local "entrepreneurs" try to emulate this or that American or European corporate product -- either a direct faux pirated imitation (like a fake Gucci handbag, or this fake KFC), or a subtly different knockoff ("Coke-a-Cola" etc.). Just a way to attract customers.

Actually, the very fact that an American restaurant chain would be seen as such high status that it was worth copying is good news in itself: it shows the Iraqis value Americanism and American products.

And the type of fried chicken take-out places I'm talking about were definitely an NYC institution -- invariably they would have gyros/doner/shawarma plus a range of deep-fried snacks (such as "Jalapeño Poppers") in addition to the chicken 'n' biscuits.
