IPhone 3G Made a Cellhead Out of Me

Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 4:48:26 pm PDT

It took about three weeks for the initial crush to subside, but today I walked into an Apple store, waited about two minutes, then paid way too much for my very first cell phone. They finally evolved into something that made me want to own one.

Nice phone.

Still not a cost I can justify. That, and AT&T doesn't work so well in my neighborhood.

I'm sure those phones are greater than sliced bread, but I absolutely refuse to carry one. I abhor cellphones with a passion, and they've brought me nothing but headache when I've had to have one.

Only thing worse is having to run Windows anything.

My funniest use of a cell phone was when we were at the mall. My daughter and I went to one store and we were supposed to go back to another spot to meet my husband. I got lost (I'd only been in that mall 20 times or more) and had to phone my husband and ask him to come and get us.

Hey, does the iPhone have a compass? If so, I neeeeed one.

34 Mr. E. Train  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:57:32pm

Im with the ghetto cell provider, metro pcs. The only thing to recommend it is that there really are unlimited mins. For $53 a month I can talk, text, send pics, surf the net (in a very limited, crappy kinda way) and not have to worry about any extra charges. Coverage isnt great but I dont really travel much. If they really had a flat rate kinda deal I might get one.

Yawn. Dick Tracey had one of these in 1931 after it was invented by Brilliant, the blind son of industrialist Diet Smith.

37 Sharmuta  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 4:59:22pm

Personally- I love my cell phone. Free caller ID, free long distance. If I don't know the number, I don't answer. I can turn it off and not deal with anybody. I can leave the house and be available to anyone, anywhere I am. It's also come in very handy at times when I've needed to call 911 to help others in need. One time I witnessed a car accident and the first thing I did was whipped out my cell to get the authorities and assistance on the scene as quickly as possible. Technology and science rock!

42 Yankee Division Son  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:00:50pm

I know two people who have just bought one of these. The work well, nice interface, intuitive, and integrates nicely with our corporate exchange server in minutes. Only one drawback, battery life. Both are complaining about slightly less than one day per charge.

My blackberry goes almost a week, but I'm not really a heavy user..

43 Da Coyote  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:01:35pm

Love the phone, but hate the network. AT&T has more bars, all right...you'll be going to lotsa bars to drink away the feeling that AT&T couldn't build a good crystal set.

44 Mr. E. Train  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:01:48pm

49 Noam Sayin'  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:02:43pm

I like to listen in on people's cell phone conversations. You know, standing in line at the supermarket, at a restaurant, bar, etc. I make it a point to look at them, too. Then when they hang up, I kind of lean my head toward the phone caller expectedly, as if he should give me a brief rundown of his conversation and the decisions made therein.

You don't need an operational cell phone to call 911, it only needs to have worked once.

That's interesting, thanks.

What do you mean by operational? If it's broken, can I still dial 911? Or do you mean if I let my service contract lapse?

Welcome to the club. I'll be interested to hear any LGF-iPhone compatibility issues. I don't have a 3G, and long LGF comment threads cause my phone's browser to crash out and default to the menu. My first cellphone was one of those Motorola flip phones that were about the size of a brick. Worse, all it could do was make (very expensive) phone calls! I thought I held out 'cause I waited until '88 to get one.

You need to get the application from Nullriver Software, Net Share, that allows you to tether your laptop to your cell phone to get internet at G3 rates on your laptop where ever you go. Unfortunately, Apple pulled the application so that you will not exceed your "unlimited" data plan...

69 Tigger2005  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:08:05pm

My Motorola Razr is fine for me. I have a hearing problem and use it mostly for texting, chat, checking e-mail, and occasional web browsing.

70 zombie  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:08:09pm

Charles, in case you're interested: I have by happenstance very recently come into possession of a first-generation old-skool iPhone. As of right now it has no service plan, so I can't use it to get or make calls or text messages, but I have "jailbroken" it and "unlocked" it, so I may be able to add some pay-as-you-go minutes to it and use it as discussed.

What I haven't yet done is "pwned" it, because it seems a bit too scary and because I don't want to upgrade to 2.0 firmware yet (or ever).

I mean if the cell phone was in use and then you decided to get another model and turned off service to the old one. That's why charities (women's shelters) collect "used" cell phones so they can give them to people for 911 use. They can't dial any numbers, just 911.

It's not a big deal at home, because I can connect to my wireless office network instead. (Now that I solved the problems I was having.) But I hope AT&T's working on improving their system.

re: #81 LeePro

If a phone is activated on a carrier's plan, but then you decide to get rid of it and get a new one, therefore deactivating your original phone, it still works to call 911. Obviously you can't make any other calls on it.

I've never actually tested this myself--it's just what I've heard.

89 zombie  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 5:13:23pm

What we need next is "satellite phone" capability in an iPhone package -- the ability to make a call from anywhere to anywhere on earth at anytime, without the need for cell towers. Then squeeze one of those Dick Tracy mini-TVs on there and -- poof! -- the tiny machine that does everything.

Charles, I have the same problems. When I got to LGF on my iPhone, none of the Ajax features work. Clicking on "new comments" or or a ding-up button or anything like that just takes me to the main front LGF page and doesn't function as intended. I guess there's nothing you can do about it -- I guess the OS for the phone doesn't agree with Ajax code.

Zombie, the weird thing is, sometimes it does work for me. Maybe they addressed some things with updates. But even then, sometimes the New Comments button works, and sometimes it doesn't. For me, it seems to be related to how many times I use it. I've had some luck continuing to use it in a given session, and then it starts to work. That makes me think it might be cache-related? What really freaks me out is the bluetooth people. Hard to tell they're on the phone if you see them from the non-bluetooth side- it looks like they're just out and about talking to themselves.

I've often thought that if we put bluetooth devices in the ears of some homeless folk, they wouldn't freak people out as much.

There was an article recently about the social benefits of cellphones, I can't remember where. One of the arguments was that cellphones basically reincarnated the family campfire. That is, now people communicate with those they hold close much more often than before. And iPhones allow effortless call merging, so it really facilitates small-network formation, etc. So there are trade-offs.

I do the same. That's my way of punishing them for their mindless jabbering. They should just shut up already.

I especially hate people who conduct their business at Starbucks while I'm trying to read a book. These loudmouths get all tense and barky. One of these days I'm going to tell them to shut up, loud enough so their client can hear.

I also love it when people give their credit card numbers over the phone. Or let me know when they're going on vacation. Too bad I don't have criminal connections. I could make a nice living.

You Still Can't Write About Muhammad

Starting in 2002, Spokane, Wash., journalist Sherry Jones toiled weekends on a racy historical novel about Aisha, the young wife of the prophet Muhammad. Ms. Jones learned Arabic, studied scholarly works about Aisha's life, and came to admire her protagonist as a woman of courage. When Random House bought her novel last year in a $100,000, two-book deal, she was ecstatic. This past spring, she began plans for an eight-city book tour after the Aug. 12 publication date of "The Jewel of Medina" -- a tale of lust, love and intrigue in the prophet's harem.

It's not going to happen: In May, Random House abruptly called off publication of the book. The series of events that torpedoed this novel are a window into how quickly fear stunts intelligent discourse about the Muslim world.

Random House feared the book would become a new "Satanic Verses," the Salman Rushdie novel of 1988 that led to death threats, riots and the murder of the book's Japanese translator, among other horrors. In an interview about Ms. Jones's novel, Thomas Perry, deputy publisher at Random House Publishing Group, said that it "disturbs us that we feel we cannot publish it right now." He said that after sending out advance copies of the novel, the company received "from credible and unrelated sources, cautionary advice not only that the publication of this book might be offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment."

/surprise, surprise, what the hell were they thinking?

My first cell phone was handed to me by a contractor who insisted that he was to be informed of every decision I made on the job and and that he, not I, was to do all the procurement of materials. Shortly thereafter he went broke, disappeared and left the soon inactive cell phone as a lovely parting gift. Six months later I got tired of it wasting space in my desk drawer and took it to the local Cingular store to find out if it had been reported lost or stolen. It had not, so I bought a months worth of minutes and have been saddled with an electronic chain yanker ever since.

While I will admit that having it has come in handy on one or two occasions, I do not love it. If every cell phone on the planet were to disappear I would not grieve and I believe that every car should be equipped with a device that disables cell phones while the engine is running.

If this is the law then the law is an ass.

Shasta's Live Testimony 'Necessary'

The new order shows the judge had previously decided to close the courtroom but not require closed-circuit TV testimony, but is now considering doing both because Duncan is now acting as his own attorney – meaning he potentially could cross-examine his young victim. The federal law on child victim testimony specifically excludes a defendant representing himself from being in the same room with the child while she testifies via closed-circuit TV, though there would be video link-ups.

This fuck repeated raped young Shasta, killed her brother in front of her, and murdered her family when he kidnapped her. I realize the accused has the right to confront his accuser. Some common sense exception need to be made. This is one of them.

Duncan is dead cold guilty, he was caught with Shasta, and showed authorites where her brother was.

If a phone is activated on a carrier's plan, but then you decide to get rid of it and get a new one, therefore deactivating your original phone, it still works to call 911. Obviously you can't make any other calls on it.

I've never actually tested this myself--it's just what I've heard.

Hmmm. Problem with this is you would still need to have a charged battery and be carrying it with you. How many people are going to do that just for the ability to call 911 with no other functions? Dunno.

Ever since stopping trauma call, I ditched the cell phone.

This does look pretty cool, but having that thing attached to me 24-7, and having it become the Pavlovian monkey on my back every time it would ring was more of a burden than being incommunicado.

It ruled my life.

I hated it.

Charles,

Welcome to the dark side. If it makes you feel any better, it's been that kind of week for me too:

Succumbed and bought a Prius yesterday as I drive over 125 miles per day. Now the truly scary part..I bought an ipod classic today just because the car has a built in jack for the thing.

I have never owned a single Apple product in my life, and I'm an IT guy. Now it looks like I have to find a hard drive to dump all of my cd's into so I can then transfer them to the ipod if I can figure out how to use itunes.

VPN networks across the globe...no problem. Developing software and hosting all sorts of cool equipment at our colo facility for the healthcare industry...no problem.

ipod...I'm scared. Hold me.

Movies, music, the Internet, wherever you get cell reception. I have 3 pages of web apps and am addicted to this phone. It allows me to leave my mac book at home most of the time now. It syncs up all of your photos, movies, contacts, and texting has become a breeze as it remembers words you use often and completes them for you by just hitting the space bar. It spell corrects on the fly too. I bought the original for $500 and have never regretted it. With 3G and the price at $199 it's a steal. Finally even though all cell companies suck, I do find that AT&T is the best of the dirty bunch.

Enjoy, it gets easier to use with in a few weeks. Start downloading the free web apps. A google search will bring you to some great stuff.

Ray Bradbury wrote a short story back in the fifties called "the Murderer," about a man who went crazy and 'killed' his radio by spooning chocolate ice cream into it, because he couldn't stand everyone being in constant touch. I don't know how he was able to foresee cellphones, but it was the first time I've seen a story about their psychological effects.

Of course you need to keep your messages separate, like the story of the guy who gets a text from his girlfriend saying her parents are going to be out, then he texts back telling her all the kinky plans he has for them, only to then receive a call from her Mom thanking him for the kind text but they've decided to stay home for the evening and have a talk with their daughter.

On the other hand - I once wrote a very non-complimentary e-mail about a co-worker, that I intended to send to a different co-worker, but - you guessed it - I accidentally sent it to the person I was writing about, instead. Yech. Taught me a big lesson about e-mail (and quick communications) - one really ought to be at least a little bit careful of what you're saying and how you say it, and review review review and edit before you send it. It's so easy to blast away at somebody when you're upset and then hit "send", and then wish you hadn't.

My friend's Nano is red. I loved the 2nd generation Nanos, but I really don't like the new ones. I hate their shape (I know that sounds weird, but it's true).

Yes, mine is 2nd gen; I had to send away for the iHome insert for it. I have a couple of playlists that are right about 30 - 40 minutes long; I use those when I walk to "time" myself - makes the exercise much more tolerable than it would be if I were counting off distance or watching a clock.

Apple makes the best stuff, and when you consider quality, ease-of-use and how Apple products tend to last longer than the competitors, Apple products are well worth it. For computers of similar quality and specs and features, the price differential between Macs and PCs is now about nil. So the perception of an Apple price premium is a canard with regards to computers. With regard to MP3/MP4 players, I'd say the same. With regard to cell phones, I don't know, having no experience with the iPhone. So how is the iPhone 3G?

So, I've somehow gotten myself on the DSCC mailing list, and they've sent out their latest email. It's called the rant, which is fitting because it's all noise and no substance. They complain that the GOP is beholden to big oil, but I guess they ignore that their own candidate - the chosen one (at least until Hillary doesn't go nuts at the Convention) Obama - has taken oil money too.

Both parties have fed at that trough. But the Democrats have decided that the way to feast off the oil companies is not to make life easier for them to drill for oil domestically, but to heap still more taxes on them.

They call it windfall profits, but that's a misnomer. They are profits.

Decided when profits are too high is not the job of government or anyone else. They've made their money because that's what the markets bear. One could argue that every penny that every member of Congress makes is a windfall profit because they have so little to show for their efforts.

I have an iPhone, but I'm not too keen on getting email on it or accessing the internet. Lifes complicated enough without technology harassing you outside of your office or home. I dislike my iPhone and like it at the same time.

This technology takes something out of our society....I'm not sure how to explain it, but people are becoming a little less "human" when always listening to digital music, accessing the internet or talking to someone on a cell phone instead of interacting with other humans around them.

319 lawhawk  Wed, Aug 6, 2008 6:22:17pm

Oh, and how come we're hearing about this now...

Again, watch for the Democrats to use the dropping prices of oil to push for the following:
1) higher gas taxes to fund pet projects (though they'll couch them in other terms - infrastructure, investing for the future, etc.)
2) no new drilling - the markets show that there's enough supply and demand and this was a temporary thing.
3) go after the speculators and tax them on their profits.
4) windfall profits taxes on oil companies.

9 Firefighters in California Helicopter Crash Are Presumed Dead

The crash brought to 15 the death toll from what is by far California's worst fire year on record. More than 1.4 million acres have burned so far "and it's the sixth of August," said Dan Sendek, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. "We're just getting into the thick of fire season right now."

re: #331 buzzsawmonkey

No, it doesn't. My 16-year-old actually does not use it much, and never uses it when she texts me. I find texting is a decent way that she and I can stay in touch, esp. when she's out and about - she can "text" me to say where she is and who she's with, and I'm happy, and she's happy that she can do this without the embarrassment of letting her friends know that she - gasp - is in touch with Mom. My rule is that she has to be in contact every 3 or 4 hours if she's out for awhile, and she always has to let me know when she changes location or meets up with a different group of friends. I have to know who she's with, and I also have to have the phone number of at least one of the people she's with. When she stays with the program, she gets a little more freedom than she might otherwise be allowed.

So for us - the cell phone thing works well. My hubby refuses to have one and that's fine. But then, he's never been a female, out alone at night or on the road somewhere with a broken-down car or flat tire . . .

Charles, welcome to the club. I've had my 1st Gen iPhone for a year now, and I'm lovin' it.

Once you get comfortable with the basics, get thee to the Apps Store. I recommend without reservation the following:

-Pandora for iPhone (my top, top fave)
-Shazam music recognition (too cool for school)
-Bloomberg
-WritingPad (intuitive keypad, has potential)
-YouNote (voice, photo or written notes, ID'd by location automatically)
- Units (conversion of metric, etc.)
- PangeaVR (cool panoramic photos)

Each of the above is either free, or costs ninety-nine cents.

The Left and Plans for "Nuremberg-Style" Tribunals for Bush Administration Officials

One thing that hasn't received much attention in conservative and Republicans circles is the ongoing conversation on the left about the possibility of Nuremberg-style war-crimes trials for members of the Bush administration should a Democratic president take office. I'm not exaggerating or introducing the Nazi analogy myself; they actually use the phrase "Nuremberg-style" when they discuss "war-crimes tribunals." And they are quite serious (although the more moderate of them prefer a "truth commission.")

I suspect this was one of two things ..

one: a well planed, thought out plan, with a good ending for the child, by a cold calculating family, or

I was five years old in 1955 when I dreamed of a space wheel colony about a thousand miles wide and 200 miles around .. that I lived there ..

This was before azmov and heinline books hit the market, before the "space age" became a reality ....

I was a resident on the ring in space ...

from there time moved on, phones moved from 4 didget phone numbers, zip codes became reality, the first computers hit the market, microwaves became kitchen utility, damn....

It's an odd age we live in .. and truely wonderous times..

Yet, our children and grandchildren will see a world we can't POSSIBLY imagine...

let me ask you something..can you imagine yourself right now on the edge of the universe billions of light years from here?
if you can do that..then with your imagination..you can imagine anything..dream any dream..look to the stars...
just 10 years ago the iphone idea would have been laughed at and dismissed out of hand...

Average monthly temperatures have risen for the past five months. If this trend continues, all water will boil and life as we know it will cease in 8.2 years.

Because, you know, all trends are linear and there are never limiting factors.

I am willing to bet you a large sum of money that the average monthly temperature will drop within the next five months.

You need not worry about taking financial advantage of me. Once I send this worthy gentleman in Nigeria just a couple of pieces of information I expect to be absolute rolling in dough. Obama Finds An ACORN

In 1995, Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar balked at implementing the federal motor voter law out of concern that letting people register via postcard and blocking the state from pruning voter rolls might invite vote fraud.

A young lawyer, a community organizer himself, sued on behalf of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (Acorn) and won. The young lawyer was Barack Obama. Acorn later invited Obama to train its staff.

When Obama served on the board of the Woods Fund for Chicago with Weather Underground terrorist William Ayers, the Woods Fund frequently gave Acorn grants to fund its agenda and voter registration activities.

Acorn has been in the lead in opposing voter ID laws and other efforts to ensure ballot integrity. Acorn has been implicated in voter fraud and bogus registration schemes in Ohio and at least 13 other states. Acorn staffers will presumably be out registering voters again this year.

Obama also opposes voter ID laws. He believes they disenfranchise voters. Last year, Obama put a hold on the nomination of Hans von Spakovsky for a seat on the Federal Election Commission. It seems von Spakovsky, as an official in the Justice Department, had supported a Georgia photo ID law. Acorn espouses the leftist view that voter ID laws are racist.

In addition to subverting American democracy to promote a leftist agenda, Acorn's radical agenda amounts to "undisguised authoritarian socialism." wrote Sol Stern in the 2003 City Journal article, "Acorn's Nutty Regime for Cities."

Say Watt, Senator?

Barack Obama wants a million electric cars on the road by 2015. Where's he going to plug them in? John McCain has the answer — a renewable energy source called nuclear power.

There will be talk at the next PTA meeting, mark my words. Mikey won't be able to hold his head up in polite company.

What a way to go.

OT--hey guys, do any of you hear remember the discussion a few weeks ago about colonoscopies and the prep involved? well, do i have a story for you! i am having one tomorrow, and doing the prep tonight. i was halfway thru the vile liquid, and on the toilet for the first of many times, when the tv starts beeping--TORNADO WATCH for our area! STOP LAUGHING! i can hear ya ya know! i yelled to hubby to put a bucket by the basement stairs in case we needed to head down. well, things calmed down outside but things were-umm--getting really fast and furious in my bathroom! Then--our towns warning sirens started blaring! all is mostly calm now, but jeez! i can say i was literally scared shi-less by a tornado! and one more laugh and SMACK!

Wahahahahahahaha!

I'm sorry, mikeymom. But I nearly wet my pants when I read that.

Good luck with the procedure tomorrow.

Yeah, I miss the old tin box at the end of a train. Got a business trip to New Orleans coming up in a few months and am thinking about taking the train from Atlanta to New Orleans; 12 hours each way, but it is $100 round trip, reserved seat to stretch out in, much nicer way to travel and it will help an industry that I want to see revitalized.

(Psst, I'm really Clutch. I added this username since I'm usually late to a thread and most of my posts are the last one or real close to it, hence 'Caboose'. Thought it would be appropriate. "K-T" -

OK let's do the math - Afghanistan started on 7 October, 2001. So now, let's do the grisly math. 3 months of 2001, plus 12 x 6 months of 2002 - 2007 (72 months), plus 7 months of 2008, so far. That comes to 82 months in theater. 500 KIA divided by 82 months = 6.098 killed in action per month on average since the beginning of the conflict. New York City, home of the "Nameless Newspaper" loses about 600 people per year to Homicide - that after the Giuliani Years (before Rudy, it was closer to 2,400 homicides per year). Screwing around with statistics, as I just have done proves one thing - Vacation in "Peaceful Afghanistan" and stay the hell away from New York! It is only a matter of perspective.
Choose yours and stick to it.

I've seen the Mexican Coca Cola in our local Vietnamese grocery, but haven't tried it yet. It looks very retro in those tall glass Coke bottles.

Mexican CC is supposed to taste like The Real Thing, back when it was made with real sugar, since that is what they use south of the 'border'. I still miss the old CC bottles that had where they were made impressed into the glass. Always a fun game to see whose bottle came from farthest away. (I don't drink sodas any more; lemonade is my drink of choice when the choice isn't an alcoholic one.)

I gave mine up completely after getting extorted for a $175 (small print ) cancellation fee by ATT. They were entirely a customer unfriendly and inflexible organization. Charged me twice my monthly agreement every month. They decided my phone was too old and made me upgrade to a new 2 year plan from which they gouged me for the cancelation fee once I was tired of them. The iPhone looks cool. I'll wait til I get that next GWB tax stimulus.

I don't think phone companies should be allowed to create these yearly plans. It's better for the consumer if they are month to month and one can switch whenever one wants to. Keep the number. Adhere to the worldwide signal standards.

That's hilarious! Kids do say the darndest things. And you realize their outlook on things is so entirely different from an adult's outlook.

When l'il Reine was really little, I used to have to try to talk over her whenever I knew she was going to say "firetruck". All she could say was the "f", and she left out the "iretr", and said the "uck". People must have thought I was raising a heathen child!

On the "outlook" side of things - I got completely frustrated one night when she was in the tub, sitting backwards, which I considered to be sitting with her back to the faucet. And I fussed at her, and she burst into tears, "But MOM - I am sitting frontwards. There's the front of the tub!" as she pointed toward what I consider the back of the tub. It occurred to me I had never defined for her what I meant by "front of the tub" and "back of the tub".

I'm not sure what will transpire at the Republican Convention, but the Dems deem it necessary to restrict protesters to fenced areas.

Judge: Denver can restrict protests at convention

It appears as though the Dems see no problem with some restrictions of freedom of expression as long as it's in their interests.

U.S. District Judge Marcia Krieger agreed that the protesters would suffer some infringement on their freedom of expression but said those interests had to be balanced with security concerns.

Bought mine last night, sucked over the number from Sprint. So far great.

"They finally evolved into something..."

It works together beautifully, as if planned. Strangely, the land-fills do not show any evidence of the interim transition models between the IPhone I and the 3G. There have to be transitional models because thousands of changes occurred between the two models especially in the 'dna' of the software code. These things don't just happen. They happen gradually, randomly, accidentally, until the new model can dominate. Researchers are not concerned about the missing transitional models. The 3G exists, it evolved. That proves there must have been transitional species. Since they cannot be found, that also proves they were obliterated.

I only answer the cell if it is a family member, or someone I want to talk to. Otherwise I listen to the message.

I couldn't wait any longer. My 30GB iPod (heavy use) all of a sudden came down with a broken headphone jack and that was it. I had to go with the 16GB 3G (space for 3000 songs + apps + a few pix) and I am very, very happy. Signal has been great in the metro Phoenix area, and its ability to pick up WiFi signals is nothing short of astounding. The Facebook and ESPN mobile apps are sweet, and the fact I can use the GPS while listening to Mos Def makes me smile.

I highly recommend the iPhone 3G.

Jeez, I didn't get my first cell until 2002, and I though I was the last man on earth not to have one. That said, I was the first person in my TOWN to get an original iPhone. iPod 1.0 and iPod 5.0 prepared me well. I love the thing, and have no desire for a 3G version. As with the iPod, I'll wait for a few revisions before replacing mine.

Besides, my iPhone plan is cheap and the nearest 3G hub is about 175 miles away!

Al Gore just bought himself a 100-ft houseboat

Global warming hysteria has been very good to Al Gore. He's made a fortune on his book, his movie, and associated enterprises. How does he spend that fortune? Most recently by buying a 100-foot houseboat; how else?

People don't usually think of 100-foot houseboats with gigantic, fuel-burning engines as a low-footprint form of entertainment. But Gore, characteristically, claims that he owns a green 100-foot houseboat, the "Toyota Prius of houseboats," as the yacht's builder puts it. Gore christened his boat Bio-Solar 1--"BS 1" for short--because it runs on bio-diesel fuel and, one of these days, Gore is planning on adding solar panels. I'm not sure just what the solar panels will do, but they definitely won't be powering the craft's gigantic engine or engines.

re: #622 ggt

I rarely answer the phone. I screen calls on the home phone and have found that it is, rarely, necessary to call back. It's usually a doctor's office confirming an appointment or a telemarketer. I figure if they don't have my cell, I don't need to talk with them.

I only answer the cell if it is a family member, or someone I want to talk to. Otherwise I listen to the message.

I HATE THE PHONE. Although I will say, the Bluetooth headset makes a big difference. I don't feel like I have to stop my life to talk on the phone.

I relate. Everyone else in the family carries their cellphones everywhere, mine is usually lost somewhere. Any time one of those "it's frying your brain" articles shows up, I gleefully email it to everyone. I live on email, but avoid the phone to the extent I can. I just hate being interrupted, email I can do at my leisure. I figure, if it's important, they'll leave a message. Which maybe I'll answer eventually. I used to have my email address as part of our phone's leave-a-message recording.

I will say there are times when the cellphones come in very handy, for instance when going somewhere and needing to meet someone. Although often it seems that at the very remote places where I need it most, that's where the coverage doesn't reach.

And all for what? To be able to blabber about nothing for hours with my friends? To waste time in traffic? How did we all survive before cell phones? Is it absolutely necessary for me to answer my cell phone when I'm sitting on the toilet? When I'm having lunch with a friend?

I just laugh when I see all these suckers lining up the night before, desperately trying to get their hands on the latest "gotta-have" offering knowing full well that their shit's be gonna out of date (and Vogue) in about six months.

Where we (the family) just were was wierd. If we were on high ground we sometimes had cell reception. We were in the Northern Most Hinterlands of Wisconsin. We visited one of the Islands (National Parks Service) and there was zero reception there. I trust my teenager, he told me so.

I wear the Bluetooth most of the time the family is not with me. Hubby has a fit when he is trying to get a hold of me and can't. "Why do I pay for you to have a cell phone . . . ." Since we have to coordinate driving duties for said teenager, it makes sense to have one. When everyone is home, the phone and the bluetooth sit on their chargers.

I play Brickbreaker alot on the Blackberry when I get bored sitting in Doctor's offices etc. So, it does have a purpose.

Free caller ID, free long distance. If I don't know the number, I don't answer. I can turn it off and not deal with anybody. – Sharmuta

Unfortunately there are problems with that.

And, I would urge Charles to take proper precautions.

There are ways to spoof caller IDs so the real caller is disguised.

There are Internet sites like SpoofCard or itellas where anyone can buy a prepaid calling card. This prepaid calling card has special features to hide the real identity of the caller.

Then the caller can assume a phone number of one of your friends or business partners and it will show up on your cell phone as legitimate telephone number.

You answer and it’s some disguised voice, say a female and you are told to go meet the individual at a location and you get jumped – or worse.

Hackers and “people with the equipment” can turn on cell phone a "powered down" cell phone and listen as they please (even making the cell phone a bug). This applies only to certain cell phones - but it has happened. That's why many company disallow cell phones on their property or require the batteries be removed.

See caller ID spoof

I will be impressed with cell phones when they make one that can survive a trip through the washing machine.

I have a two-year-old Samsung that did just that. Took a day or two to get it fully functional but survive it did! Here are some steps to take to save immersed electronics (I used the same steps to save my son's Zune). Your mileage may vary and there are no guarantees that this will work every time, so proceed at your own (slight) risk:

1. DO NOT TURN IT ON TO SEE IF IT STILL WORKS. Resist the temptation to find out if it works; it just might, but then, you just might fry it. Exercise some patience. Remember to breath.

2. Remove the battery (if it can be removed without dismantling the unit), memory card etc., open up any port covers, IOW remove anything that can be removed and open anything that can be opened. Shake as much water out as you can and dry off any water that you can. I'm ambivalent about using canned air to try and blow water out as you might be successful or you might blow water into where it hasn't been (unlikely if your phone just went thru a washing machine, but just a short dunk may not have flooded the entire device). If you have canned air, use as you see fit.

3. Get a plastic baggie and fill it with just enough plain white rice to allow your device to placed in it and have about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of air space. Close the baggie and place in a warm space (depending where you are, a car dashboard in the sun might be an ideal location, but if it is really, really hot outside, exercise caution. A sunny window sill works.). The combination of the heat and the rices' absorbency should get the water out of the device. Occasionally shake the bag to help expel any condensation that may form and to expose fresh rice. Give it at least 24 hours. If you are really paranoid about this, repeat the step with fresh rice, but this is usually not necessary.

4. Remove the device, wipe it clean with soft cloth to get any rice dust off, check to see if any of the displays show condensation; if so, go back to step 2 and start the process again by shaking out the water, etc. If everything looks OK, replace the battery (if applicable) and see if it will power up (don't hook it up to the charger just yet). If it does and it looks OK, check each button/key for functionality but don't panic if at first some of the buttons/keys don't work; it took me three days before my '5' key started working again on the first press.

5.If everything is fine, replace the memory card and check functionality. Charge the battery.

6. If everything is working OK, say "Thank you, Caboose!" and hit Charles tip jar. (very important last step!). If it doesn't work, cuss a bit and take it in for repair or replacement and buy a case for your new device. The only time my iPod isn't in a condom of some sort is when it is in the dock.

Charles,

did i read that right? your first cell phone ever?! yike. you were behind the curve big time.

Myself I got a Palm Treo, for much less, and frankly it does everything I want it to, including web browse and email.

the beauty of the iphone is that there is no key to press. It operates as a touch screen requiring virtually no pressure. Thus no tendinitis.

You could have gotten a Nokia N95 and capture high-quality still images and DVD-quality video footage with a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics

But then, it wouldn't be a Mac.

I sense a lightweight, phone-browser friendly version of LGF is now in the works... ;^)

'bout time. I've been asking Charles for this for a while for us road warrior lizards who carry smartphones and read LGF on the run in airports, hotel lobbies and restaurants.

re: #712 Caboose

Caboose -

With the exception of the plastic bag, that is how I saved a Nokia "Candy Bar" Phone about 3 years ago after I dropped it into a toilet. Except for being Off the Air from Friday Evening to Sunday Morning - No Loss.
The Nokia became a hand me down to our company's resident phone loser and I got a Motorola L2. When the Nokia was inevitably lost, Mr. Phone loser got the L2. I wanted to get an L6 or L7. To my initial chagrin, AT&T no longer had them, being no fan of "Flip-Phones" I upsold myself to a Motorola Q and have been quite happy with it. This one will be NO HAND ME DOWN.

I don't own a cellphone.

I've used other peoples cellphones less than 50 times in my life.

Read about RF safety.

Depending on the frequency, power, type of antenna, how close you are to the transmitting antenna, these factors are related to how safe you are from tissue heating.

I am reminded of the movie Day of the Triffods. The guy with bandages on his eyes missed the spectacular meteor shower and could see the next morning. Others who saw the meteor shower were blind.

I'd use an ear piece to keep the cellphone away from the head.

Think about the problems facing Senator Kennedy and "The Price of Darkness" Robert Novak.

721 Goody  Thu, Aug 7, 2008 8:18:31am

I just got mine yesterday. The 3G Internet coverage is more limited than I thought, but the screen quality is amazing when compared to my old Crackberry. But the battery life appears awful--I played with it a bit when I got it yesterday, turned it off for the night, played with it in the office and --bam-- get a warning that I'm down to 20% of battery.

"Pay" -

If I do have an anti-technology bias, it is for car-bound GPS - a/k/a the "Moron Machine." Perhaps due to the fact that I can read a map, and if necessary, navigate by compass - thank you scouting. Not that I find anything particularly evil about them - they just seem to be a poor value in any size that is legible - AND - with Mapquest and like programs superfluous. Suspect if my next car has it - I will use it - just can't justify it as a separate add-on.

Charles, let 'em scoff....
I was one of the ' idiots ' who bought the original, and I wouldn't change a thing about having bought it..... I heart** my Iphone! It has simplified my life beyond belief, and the photos thing is..... well, cool.
Just glad they made the update available for us so we didn't end up with a paperweight due to the new 3G.
** can't say I love an inanimate object, but that's pretty close

re: #721 Goody

You can get more battery life if you disable push functions that you don't need.
But I have had friends say that their new one has less battery power than my ' old ' one.

I haven't yet found a thing about the Iphone that has made me consider giving up my Treo. I have all the touch controls, a nice keyboard, and it's compatible with all Windows Mobile 5 apps. (And almost everything ever made for every earlier version too. Unlike Vista.)

Plus the Iphone seems loaded up with a lot of "scamware" programs that link you to this shop and that shop.

I was going to get a Q, until I found out that they had largely crippled the PDA features. Same with the Blackberry. I really prefer to customize my experience on a computer so I had to go with something I could add on to adjust and adapt to my style.

I just found out that if I browse LGF through Google IG (Ick) that I get a very nice easy loading LGF that loads the thread in pages. Makes it really easy to read, loads quick, is formatted beautifully, and posts nicely. The only flaw I found was that the New Comments button wouldn't work.

re: #722 Dr. Shalit

I like maps too. You see the BIG PICTURE.

But a map is useless when you don't know exactly where you are.

You know your destination but not your current location.

Try using a map when street signs are missing, damaged, can't be found, not visible at night or due to weather, and you'll see the usefulness of GPS.

I don't have a GPS either.

I have lots of computers and a Ham Radio license - No Code Technicians - which is where I learned a little about RF Safety.

I do have about 4 cellphones that I have in a drawer, discharged, dead, that I hoped to use while driving, to call 911.
