Cat's Eye, with X-Rays

Thu, Aug 7, 2008 at 4:08:03 pm PDT

From APOD, this stunning false-color composite picture combines a Hubble Space Telescope image with data from the orbiting Chandra Observatory, showing the intense X-ray activity of the Cat’s Eye Nebula, 3,000 light years from Earth.

More From Author of Cancelled Novel

We've heard from Sherry Jones, author of THE JEWEL OF MEDINA, the novel cancelled by Ballantine covered in yesterday's Lunch.

Jones tells us that "because of my termination agreement with Random House, I am prohibited from commenting on the circumstances surrounding that termination." But from her perspective, "Despite Random House's statement, I'm not aware of any warnings of possible terrorist attack from any other source than Denise Spellberg. I know that Shahed Amanullah's email had nothing to do with any of this, because I was the one who discovered it, and the resulting discussion, on the Husaini Youths website.

"Although I've been aware from the start that my books might offend some people, I've never been afraid of physical harm because of them. I wrote these books because I felt called to write them after researching A'isha for my own purposes. My passion for her story trumps the fear factor. I've expected controversy, yes, but never terrorism."

Separately, Jones writes on her blog that "all I did was try to portray A'isha, Muhammad's child bride (believed by most historians to have married Muhammad at age nine and consummated the marriage at age 11) in the context of her times."

As to Spellberg's charge that the novel is "soft porn," Jones replies: "There are no sex scenes in this book. The novel, whose bibliography includes 29 scholarly and religious books, is a work of serious historic fiction detailing the origins of Islam through the eyes of the Prophet Muhammad's youngest wife. It's a book about women's relationships and experiences at a time in history when a religion was being founded in the midst of conflict."

Separately, agent Natasha Kern says that she will have news of foreign rights sales for the book to announce shortly.

Random House supplied us with their full statement to the Wall Street Journal, and deputy publisher Tom Perry "underscore[s] that our decision was not based solely on the opinions of Ms. Spellberg."

The publisher says that after distributing galleys of the book, they received "from credible and unrelated sources, cautionary advice not only that the publication of this book might be offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment.

"We felt an obligation to take these concerns very seriously. We consulted with security experts as well as with scholars of Islam, whom we asked to review the book and offer their assessments of potential reactions.

"We stand firmly by our responsibility to support our authors and the free discussion of ideas, even those that may be construed as offensive by some. However, a publisher must weigh that responsibility against others that it also bears, and in this instance we decided, after much deliberation, to postpone publication for the safety of the author, employees of Random House,
booksellers and anyone else who would be involved in distribution and sale of the novel." As reported, both parties subsequently agreed to terminate the publishing agreement.

Apparently, The Terrorists Planned to Spam Random House's Servers

Let's take another look at yesterday's story about that novel about Muhammad's wife that isn't getting published: You'll recall that Random House chose to withdraw from its deal with Sherry Jones to publish The Jewel of Medina after receiving ""cautionary advice" from an Islamic studies professor who'd been approached to blurb the book and instead helped convince the company "not only that the publication of this book might be offensive to some in the Muslim community, but also that it could incite acts of violence by a small, radical segment." In the WSJ article about the piece, Asra Q. Nomani makes reference to a website where somebody, hearing about the book third-hand, posted "a seven-point strategy" to compel Jones not only not to publish, but "apologise all the muslims [sic] across the world."

If you were just sorta reading along in a hurry, it was easy to conflate the publisher's expressed fear of a terrorist attack and that brief mention of an action plan against the novel and convince yourself some sort of threat was actually expressed. But when you look at the actual online complaint, a much different story emerges; that "seven-point strategy" turns out to be little more than organizing a blast email campaign, getting an advance copy of the novel to pick out the offensive bits, prepping fact sheets about the Prophet's wives, keeping an eye out for any media coverage of the book so they can complain about that, too, and telling people how terrible it is "this book has been written with some exotic scenes in it." (He means "erotic," by the way.)

Copernicus was treated OK:

In 1533, Johann Albrecht Widmannstetter delivered in Rome a series of lectures outlining Copernicus's theory. The lectures were heard with interest by Pope Clement VII and several Catholic cardinals.
On 1 November 1536, Archbishop of Capua Nicholas Schönberg wrote a letter to Copernicus from Rome:
Some years ago word reached me concerning your proficiency, of which everybody constantly spoke. At that time I began to have a very high regard for you... For I had learned that you had not merely mastered the discoveries of the ancient astronomers uncommonly well but had also formulated a new cosmology. In it you maintain that the earth moves; that the sun occupies the lowest, and thus the central, place in the universe... Therefore with the utmost earnestness I entreat you, most learned sir, unless I inconvenience you, to communicate this discovery of yours to scholars, and at the earliest possible moment to send me your writings on the sphere of the universe together with the tables and whatever else you have that is relevant to this subject ...[13]

OT: I have 3 "NOBAMA" signs on my car that I made on my computer. I made the O large and put a Soviet hammer & sickle inside it. Today at the gas station a woman came up to me and said "Can I ask you about your sign? It seems like you're saying Obama is a communist, I haven't heard that before. Can you explain it?" Initially I thought she was an Obama supporter and I was just a tad brusque in my response, but fortunately she didn't seem to notice. I said something like "Well, yeah, he pretty much is. All he talks about is taking money from those who have it and redistributing it. Did you know he wants to give $840 billion to the U.N., in addition to all the other programs he wants to set up? And it could cost you $6800 in new taxes?" Then I brought up his Marxist professor and his Pastor who preaches Black Liberation Theology, etc. I talk about how income redistribution doesn't work because it doesn't create any new wealth and she agreed with that. Finally she said, "Wow, I didn't know any of this stuff (about Obama). Very interesting!"

I tell ya, stuff like that makes it worth risking getting my car windows smashed.

54 Silhouette  Thu, Aug 7, 2008 4:41:23pm

OT - but interesting

Geisel allegedly referred to Obama with a racial epithet and continued, "If he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."
...
Another person in the class quoted Geisel as saying that "he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head," according to the Secret Service.

Geisel denied in a written statement to a Secret Service agent that he ever made those threats, and the documents don't indicate that he ever took steps to carry out any assassination. He was charged only with threatening Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee, but not for any threat against President Bush.

I wonder why, if they have testimony about both quotes.

BAGHDAD - Iraq and the U.S. are near an agreement on all American combat troops leaving Iraq by October 2010, with the last soldiers out three years after that, two Iraqi officials told The Associated Press on Thursday. U.S. officials, however, insisted no dates had been agreed.

It's in Draco which means its explosion should have been visible from Europe. I don't know how long ago its last supernova was visible; wikipedia says 1000 +/- 260 years but that was guessed at a decade ago.

Design Error Blamed for Loss of Ashes of 'Star Trek''s 'Scotty'

A privately held rocket company on Wednesday blamed a design error for its latest failure to reach orbit, which caused the loss of three government satellites and human ashes, including the remains of astronaut Gordon Cooper and "Star Trek" actor James Doohan.

The two-stage Falcon 1 rocket, which blasted off from a Central Pacific atoll Saturday night, separated as planned on its way to space, but leftover thrust after engine cutoff caused the first stage to fall back and hit the second stage, according to Hawthorne-based SpaceX.

The rocket, containing the remains of 208 people, dropped in the Pacific and was not recovered.

One Nation, Under a New Obama Salute

George Bush had his three-fingered W salute that supporters flashed when greeting him at presidential campaign events in 2000. And now, if a Los Angeles creative agency gets its way, Sen. Barack Obama will see fans meet him with his own salute like the one above. "Our goal is to see a crowd of 75,000 people at Obama's nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future," says Rick Husong, owner of The Loyalty Inc.

I'm getting so close to boycotting it. I loved Batman Begins, because it seemed the creators respected the comics history. Then they do this one and throw away everything that IMHO makes the Joker a great character. They could have replaced this Joker with Mr. Zsasz and it would have been more accurate.

I thought it was an extended arm at a 45 degree angle, palm down. Or if that is too offensive, both arms straight up with hands extended upward (like the French Salute).

Though more accurately the correct Ob salute is arm extended parallel to the ground hand extended palm up.

Kinda like how singers were better before MTV because then it only mattered if they could sing, not if they looked good in tight pants.

That might still be true if MTV was still relevant. And for a long time it was true. Bands were more worried about the video than the music, and lead singers in rock bands had to look like trannies and sing like chicks. Man what a bleak period for rock and roll that was.

Not so much anymore. Of course there are still some real kooks out there. But there are lots of bands that look like "normal" people.

By measuring a peak in the temperature of hot gas in the center of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4649, scientists have determined the mass of the galaxy’s supermassive black hole. The method, applied for the first time, gives results that are consistent with a traditional technique.

No Women on Saudi Olympic Team

When the delegation of Tuvalu enters the Olympic stadium in Beijing on Friday evening for what will be its debut Games, the tiny Pacific island nation of just 11,000 people will be represented by two athletes and a weightlifter – two men and one woman.

The other debut nation at the 2008 Games, the Marshall Islands (pop: 63,000), has produced a team of three men and two women (athletics, swimming and Taekwondo).

But elsewhere in the procession of participating nations, Saudi Arabia, with a population of 28 million, will field a team – athletes, equestrians, swimmers, shooters and weightlifters – that doesn’t include a single woman.

In the eight summer Olympic Games in which the kingdom has participated since 1972, it has sent a total of 166 men, and no women

What a shame.

This will get ugly. Darwinists should proactively file suit in court NOW to prevent its dissemination in schools, and to get a judge to declare that this line of research is religion in disguise.

Nope. It was seven grams of him in New Mexico. And they had already planned to launch more before those went up:

Another rocket carrying more of Doohan's ashes is slated for an orbital launch in December or January. Such flights deliver payloads to orbit, meaning the remains can be aloft for days, weeks or even years before falling back to earth and burning up in the atmosphere.

I built some hardware that broken because of design errors, all the engineers signed off on designs too. Then we are reviewing the design and ask why a bunch of stuff isn't in the hardware. I tell 'em you didn't ask for that stuff. Sure we did they say... I whip the design requirements doc and nope not there... I look at my boss and roll my eyes, he just grins.

Y'all talked about this today?

HUNTSVILLE — An illegal immigrant from Honduras who claimed his treaty rights were violated when he was arrested for a robbery-murder near Dallas was executed Thursday evening.

"God forgive them, receive my spirit," Heliberto Chi said in English. In Spanish, he told a friend watching through a window that he loved him and appreciated his hard work. He appeared to be whispering a prayer in Spanish with a tear at the corner of his right eye as the lethal drugs began to take effect.

I'm so sad for him...

A case where the mouse should have had a gun, too:
POTTER VALLEY – A Mendocino County woman who was trying to kill mice in her trailer with a gun ended up shooting herself and another person.

Sheriff's officials say the 43-year-old woman pulled out her .44-caliber Magnum revolver after she saw the mice scurrying across the floor of her trailer on Highway 20 in Potter Valley.

But she accidentally dropped the gun, which went off as it struck the floor. The bullet went through the woman's kneecap, bounced off the keys sitting on the belt loop of a 42-year-old man in the trailer and grazed the man's groin before ending up in his coin pocket.

Authorities did not release the shooting victims' names.

I have a friend that was after rats in a rented house with a .45.

Yes, he was not drunk.

He was STONED!

Forgot to add...he sat in the kitchen in the dark with a Streamlight and the .45...when he heard a noise, he would snap the light on and point the gun.

Not a bad point. But even in the comics the Joker is a sick bastard. Maybe not quite like that, but he is a mass/multiple murderer.

What I don't get is why they changed the whole concept of the joker to match some druggies wet dream (sorry I don't get into the Heath worship out there. He was a druggie and a fool who abandoned his small daughter by running away the final way.) And WTF is with the lip smacking sh*t he does in that film? That doesn't even makes sense.

I guess why I'm pissed is they turned the whole issue of his reason for being on its ear. Instead of whether he became the way he did because of his scars or if he was sick before them went out the window, when they decided to make him a self-mutilated, makeup wearing punkass.

From this:

"I am continuing to work to try to bring down the terrorist Web sites on the Internet," Lieberman said. "I think the critical role… [is] reaching out to try to stop the problem in local areas before it starts."

The shutting down of certain Web sites is a prospect some critics are dreading.

"We have a First Amendment and we champion the Constitution, and so in no way, shape or form should we engage in censorship of the internet," said Kareem Shora, national executive director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

"But the community recognizes that the Internet can be a dangerous tool for youth," he said, "so we're working on that by giving constructive alternatives to the youth."

Ultimately, experts say, the Web will replace traditional terrorist training with cyber training, making it easier to recruit homegrown terrorists.

Is this the new substitute for CAIR?

And here . . . is a chilling extraterrestrial possibility that true Darwinists will immediately reject as Not Science, should never be published in a respectable, peer- reviewed scientific journal, and should never ever be shown to children because it could "kick the can down the road" as far as evolution is concerned (shudder), cause doubt and confusion in impressionable young minds, and possibly somehow lead to the massively heretical influences of (gasp) Intelligent Design or even worse, a dangerous link to Islamic extremism!

Panspermia, even if true, would not refute the theory of evolution. It would simply mean that part of that history of evolution took place somewhere else. There's absolutely nothing in the idea that offers a refutation of evolution by natural selection, or support for 'intelligent design'. If you think there is then you're just stupid.

I got a little 80mm just to try things out, but the skies around Los Angeles are pretty much horrible anymore with light pollution, even when the weather cooperates, that I gave it up.

Still, if you're so inclined, for a relatively small amount of moolah, you can today buy equipment that will take pictures that the Mount Palomar telescope couldn't take, fifty years ago. Have to use the CCDs and Photoshop, or the astronomical equivalents. If and when I leave town here, I'll probably try some of that.

But no, you can't see it like that through the eyepiece, nohow, not even if you can command the 8 meter reflectors, or the Keck 10 meters. Needs false coloring, non-visual light frequencies, etc.

My dream is that they solve the problems of optical interferometry sometime in the next ten, twenty years, and come out with a home version of that, set up two eight-inch mirrors fifty feet apart, and look for footprints on the moon!

(I dunno if the math quite works out for that, but it's probably close!)

This month's Boy's Life, the scouting magazine, had a nice spread showing all the medals for the modern Olympic games. Each host city had a different design, in theory, although some designs were very similar.

Most were beautiful. Some were ugly as homemade sin.

May I ask your opinion of Harley Quinn (sp?)? I've seen a number of the titillating (not much of a pun intended) cartoons where the females are all "perks and smirks" and I can't tell what to make of her as Joker's sidekick.

She's pretty cool in the cartoons. Made out to be a total idiot most of the time, which makes it more gutwrenching when she does something that reminds you she was a brilliant psychiatrist. The comics have had a little more time to develop her character more. Recently she came back to herself a bit. (She was developed for the cartoon and moved into the comics later)

re: #425 itellu3times

I am keeping it simple and cheap. I do a fair amount of camping and Dark sky is truly cool for astronomy. If I had five excess grand I would own a truly automated and powerful small scope....

re: #53 Thanos

I've always wondered how they will plot courses for interstellar trips, there's the obvious time shift which could be compensated for by path projections, but then what if the light passes by some dark matter? It could be bent...

Interstellar trips will be very slow by comparison to the speed of light, and will take centuries or millennia. They will also be expensive. Quadrillions of dollars, minimum.

A civilization spread wide throughout the solar system, that thought big and had command of some fraction of the sun's energy output, could afford that.

Dark matter refraction wouldn't be a problem. Dark matter comprises most of the mass of any galaxy, but it's thinly spread. It doesn't clump up because unlike ordinary gas, it cannot dump energy by radiating it away.

We only know about it because the pattern of how stars move around in a galaxy, and how light passing through or near a galaxy refracts, is inconsistent with the amount of mass we can account for from stars and interstellar gas. The galaxy weighs more than it has any right to weigh---going by what we can {see}.

Think of the stars as birdshot, and the dark matter as air. The air masses more than the birdshot, but you can see from one piece of shot to the next, and the air mass between two bits of shot is insignificant.

What's more, the dark matter only bends light when that light travels through regions of varying dark-matter density. Just as light is refracted by glass only when it crosses a glass-air interface, uniformly dense (uniformly not-very-dense, to be precise) concentrations of dark matter don't bend light passing through them.

The density of dark matter verges off slowly as one goes from the center of a galaxy to the outer reaches. [Even then, it doesn't zero out. The whole galaxy lives in a larger cloud of dark matter.] On the scale of travel from here to stars a few dozen light years away, the density is effectively constant. Thus, no refraction.

I actually thought it might mean collard or mustard greens (grown in a field).

Guess you can tell where I'm from, eh?
Obviously, I'm very downscale, because I found this for "field greens"

Mesclun, also called Field Greens or Spring Mix, is a classic green salad mix originating in the South of France. It consists of a mixture of very young leaves and shoots of wild and cultivated plants, including endive, dandelion, arugula, lamb's lettuce, oak leaf, mache, radicchio, chervil, sorrel, frissee, purslane, etc. Sometimes edible flowers are included.

Death Valley is probably the best bet, BUT you're very right, altitude helps, too.

I remember once upon a time, being up at Mammoth Mountain for skiing, coming out of the restaurant at night, 8000 foot altitude for the town, and looking up, and the STARS! Lights on all over town, cold air, not the best seeing, but WOW! Nearly froze my nose just staring upwards with nothing but the nekkid eyes.

Gotta one up y'all ... the best for me was on an island in the Flores Sea (Indonesia) doing some geodedic survey work in the oil patch - just me and 2 local camp helpers ... 1500 miles from nearest civilization .. absolutely zero light pollution ... no moon ... just WOW for several weeks back in the 70s.

I had a fun summer job over 30 years ago at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, in Cambridge, MA (co-located with the Harvard University observatory) writing software to draw star maps with X-ray sources collected from the first X-ray satellite, Uhuru. Of course, back then, the plots were black and white; the one graphics workstation I saw was reserved for other uses. (No, the graphs weren't chiseled in stone tablets. We used a stylus on clay.)

And now I have a part-time job (in addition to my main job as a software engineer) teaching astronomy online, with a large online university.

Well, that might answer the whole, where did life on Earth originate problem, something that evolutionary theory does not address. How about you go get a grant and give it some study. Tell them you are studying how it might have caused global warming and they will practically throw the research money at you.

Yikes, that's scary because you're absolutely right! This could be the thin end of the wedge. After all, viruses, which are non-living, interact with the DNA of living organisms. That viruses might have come from outer space and might even have a significant role in evolution opens the question as to where these viruses came from.

And then it will be viruses "all the way down!"

Yes, this will go over real well. O looks real close to 0, which for those who don't dash their zeroes, could be a problem. From US Dept. Justice:

US residents can bring back Cuban cigars, but only one box at a time per person, and for their personal use only.
That means you can NOT, in any way, receive any box in the USA, but only that you can cross the US border with a box, preferably already opened and with one or more cigars smoked, to prove that the cigars are for personal use

Cool, that is not the regulation I knew. Here it looks like there could be a problem. The regulation I remember was from CBP, but I haven't found it yet. They did an update a couple years ago which closed many loopholes and AFAIK made it illegal to import any Cuban cigars from anywhere.

But, if it worked for you, it will work for others. Wish I was located somewhere I could do this. Just can't afford to travel anymore.

Panspermia, even if true, would not refute the theory of evolution.
It would simply mean that part of that history of evolution took place
somewhere else. There's absolutely nothing in the idea that offers a
refutation of evolution by natural selection, or support for
'intelligent design'. If you think there is then you're just stupid.

Of course we already know that neither panspermia or any other imaginable discovery could refute the theory of evolution. The problem with allowing panspermia to be considered a legitimate area of scientific research is that it would open the door to ID, creationists, Islamic extremists, and loonies of all kinds!

As someone else has posted here repeatedly, all that the theory of panspermia would do is "kick the can further down the road," adding mechanisms not needed to explain the origin of life on Earth, since the theory of evolution has already proved completely sufficient.

Worse yet, if you include extraterrestrial viruses in the theory of evolution on Earth, you would have to explain how they developed and pretty soon it will be "viruses all the way down."

No. Scientists who believe in evolution must not allow Panspermia to gain any legitimacy. It is simply a ruse by non-scientists to cast doubt on evolution!

No. Scientists who believe in evolution must not allow Panspermia to gain any legitimacy. It is simply a ruse by non-scientists to cast doubt on evolution!

The article you posted makes no mention of viruses from space - on a mission, apparently, since there is no evidence or particular scientific reason for assuming this scenario, to disrupt the theory of evolution! I am not aware that it is reasonable to argue that the evolution of viruses preceded the evolution of living organisms in any scenario, either earth-bound or extra-terrestrial, which seems to be what you are suggesting. This seems like a particularly stupid idea in view of the fact that viruses cannot reproduce without a host organism.

The account of panspermia theory given here simply displaces some early evolution - up to the bacterial level - from earth to somewhere else. There is nothing in it whatsoever to dispute natural selection either before or after the bacteria's arrival on earth.

There is no threat to the evolutionary theory here, and there is no scientific conspiracy against the theory of Panspermia. It is regarded as a possibility, but there is as yet no real evidence for it, or theoretical need for it. You are basically just talking a load of nonsense.

Startide Rising was a nice book, but the later books in the Uplift universe all had a little twist at the end that just grew orthographically out of the events of the book so far, and that was just laugh-out-loud funny, as if God had just arranged all this stuff to suddenly fall together at the end in such a way as to just tweak the noses (or whatever other facial appendages) of the bad-guy aliens. I always loved that aspect of these books.

Sorry, I posted the wrong article. Here's the one in which some scientists suggest the extraterrestrial origin of certain viruses:

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]

It is shocking that the Lancet would would even consider publishing this unwarranted attack against evolution. Since then, Dr. Wickramasinghe has theorized that the Avian flu virus HN51 also has an extraterrestrial origin.

[Link: news.skymania.com...]

There is no reason to consider any alternatives to evolution despite your assurances that it does not threaten the theory of evolution!

There is no doubt that this is part of the wedge strategy and you shouldn't give any scientific credence to it.

So that's where your viruses came from. I'll overlook the fact that this particular theory doesn't seem to be well regarded by scientists as this would just be more evidence of the scientific conspiracy against tha troof.

There is no reason to consider any alternatives to evolution despite your assurances that it does not threaten the theory of evolution!

It doesn't threaten evolution because it's not an alternative to the theory of evolution. Repeating - all it does is say that some of the evolution happened elsewhere.

There is no doubt that this is part of the wedge strategy and you shouldn't give any scientific credence to it.

It's a measure of how stupid ID'ers are that they would see panspermia - a theory that does not contradict evolution - as a devastating weapon against evolution.

Hardly an inspiring atmosphere for budding scientists regardless. I don't think it's a stretch to admit that the Catholic Church pretty much held science back for a good 500 or so years. I don't attribute that to Catholicism but I do attribute it to the fact that any organization succumbs to corruption, and science and it's implications for free thought were a danger to the control over society the Church had.

It's a measure of how stupid ID'ers are that they would see
panspermia - a theory that does not contradict evolution - as a
devastating weapon against evolution.

Then why are most scientists who believe in evolution adamantly against panspermia?

Besides "kicking the can down the road," it legitimizes the possibility that the origin of life and possibly the complexity of life is not adequately explained by the evidence for evolution, and it admits the theoretical possibility of genetic engineering by extraterrestrials, opening the door to ID.

If life was "seeded" on Earth where did it come from, how fast was the meteorite traveling, and how long did it take to get here?

And this, my friend, is why the study of panspermia cannot ever be recognized as a legitimate part of science, even if there's evidence to support the theory.

The origin of life is not something that evolution attempts to explain; the selfsame arguments against irreducible complexity are valid no matter where life comes from.

Even if extraterrestrials genetically engineered the beginnings of terrestrial life billions of years ago, which is highly unlikely given the vast interstellar distances involved, it still has terrestrially evolved during the past 2+ billion years, and the hypothetical genetically engineering extraterrestrials themselves would have had to evolve to a state where they could genetically engineer life and build interstellar spacecraft. Also, if bugs came off a meteorite, they came from some other planet where they evolved.

Once the evolutionary theory camel nose is inside the Universe's tent, it noses its way into panspermia, too.

So, you finally admit that it is not impossible that life on Earth could have been genertically engineered! You're thinking has begun to evolve past many Darwinists!

Now, how can a scientist or mathematician test whether DNA was or was not touched by extraterrestrial intelligence (regardless of whether or not the source of this intelligence evolved)?
