MoveOn.org Goes into the Protection Racket

Fri, Aug 8, 2008 at 12:10:52 pm PDT

Another MoveOn.org offshoot group is employing a bizarre, thuggish tactic to try to intimidate Republican voters out of donating money to conservative groups: Group Plans Campaign Against G.O.P. Donors.

Nearly 10,000 of the biggest donors to Republican candidates and causes across the country will probably receive a foreboding “warning” letter in the mail next week.

The letter is an opening shot across the bow from an unusual new outside political group on the left that is poised to engage in hardball tactics to prevent similar groups on the right from getting off the ground this fall.

Led by Tom Matzzie, a liberal political operative who has been involved with some prominent left-wing efforts in recent years, the newly formed nonprofit group, Accountable America, is planning to confront donors to conservative groups, hoping to create a chilling effect that will dry up contributions.

“We want to stop the Swift Boating before it gets off the ground,” said Mr. Matzzie, who described his effort as “going for the jugular.”

The warning letter is intended as a first step, alerting donors who might be considering giving to right-wing groups to a variety of potential dangers, including legal trouble, public exposure and watchdog groups digging through their lives.

The whole mindset behind being a conservative is individual liberty. The whole mindset behind the leftist movement is that the group shall force the individual to act correctly.

51 Captain Jack  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 12:23:25pm

I have always wondered why leftist Dems always seem to associate Republicans with Fascists by likening them to Nazis when the policies that leftists propose seem very restrictive to personal freedoms (in the name of protecting the collective community). I think is is simply psychological "projection". "Don't intimidate us or we'll kill you!" seems like a backhanded way to intimidate your opposition. Leftists scream about "stolen elections" when the only publicly proven fraud I have seen comes from dems and their govt funded proxies like ACORN. It's like a little kid beating the cr ap out of his brother while he shouts "stop hitting me".

Even as the Democratic primary fight enters the final stretch, plans are proceeding apace among party strategists to build an independent money machine that will rival or eclipse what they created in 2004, when donors poured millions into two key outside-the-party organizations -- America Coming Together and the Media Fund.

Tom Matzzie has been hired to run a new effort for 2008, which he has described in an e-mail as a $100 million-plus venture organized around "issues and character." Matzzie is leaving his post as the Washington director of Moveon.org to take the job. He did not return an e-mail seeking comment on his new position.

The news of Matzzie's hiring comes roughly two weeks after a group of the largest donors in the Democratic party gathered in Washington to discuss where they'll put their money during the 2008 race. One of the attendees -- Hollywood producer Steve Bing -- is said to be one of the leading financial forces behind the organization Matzzie has been hired to head.

Liberal Fascism at its finest. Maybe they'll start boycotting GOP-owned business and daub their front windows with red paint.

Scream "voter intimidation" while slashing GOP GOTV vans tires

Scream "suppression of dissent" while backing the "Fairness Doctrine"

Scream "racism" while always bringing attention to race

Scream "climate of fear" (see LGF topic above)

This, along with the creepy Obama symbol, messianic posters, supporters "salute" and slogan "Yes We Can" makes me more fearful than ever we will see fascism shortly in our country, in the form of anti-fascism.

Liberal fascism? yes we can!

80 ShalomMets  Fri, Aug 8, 2008 12:36:33pm

This was reported in today's NY Times of all places. A fairly factual report, unusual for the Times, but they do not delve into the possible illegalties of such an intimidation campaign, or whether it would be actionable in civil court by recipients of the letter or other such useful information. The Times quotes a couple of Republican strategists and fundraisers who say the letter will likely backfire and could embolden the conservative base to increase its donations to McCain or other conservative causes.

The thought did occur to me... However, I would have found myself in the pokey. That entire episode of my life (about 6 years ago) was instrumental in me wanting to go in to LE. Hell, as long as I was doing it as a civilian, for free, I may as well have a badge. It was a father-son team, and was one of the largest coke busts in the history of California. I still show up at parole hearings with the recorded death threats on my voice mail that they foolishly recorded. It usually works to keep them in the pen for another 5 years.

Be kind to the poor democrats. They are watching their candidate destroy himself, so they are flailing. Obama just took the most effective action of his campaign - just left town for a couple of weeks. It seems that every time people see him he loses support, so he is hiding.

This effort will create a backlash if anybody finds out, but it will more probably just fade away, as their candidate does the same.

Why is it that leftists like Michael Moore and Tom Matzzie got to be so fricking enormous when they advocate that government should control what other people consume?

If you are a supposedly “enlightened socialist” who wants “equitable distribution” of the worlds resources isn’t it kind of hypocritical to have been stuffing your face to the point where you need a forklift to put your ass on the toilet?

My daughter has progressive, and recently hit her husband's car which he was driving in front of her car as they entered a traffic circle. The woman in front of him had slammed on her breaks just as my daughter turned to look for additional traffic. So now Progressive is charging them 2 $1000 deductibles. Hardly seems right since she hit him.

Sorry to hear about the accident. She needs to switch her insurance company.

Unless you work in Hollywood, that is . . .

Hi Stink!
This is so true - it hurts.

I don’t know of a liberal turned conservative — like myself — who doesn’t have a somewhat similar story to tell. When I was a liberal, conservatives were always very patient and tolerant of my roaring ignorance. But that’s just not true the other way around. Not every liberal gets ugly, many don’t, but too many do. Announcing yourself a liberal at a fairly conservative get-together will most likely result in a fascinating conversation. Announcing yourself a conservative at a liberal get-together (especially in Hollywood) … you might as well do the Nazi salute.

For all of the people that are bemoaning Peter Lewis' (former CEO and current chairman of the board of Progressive) contributions to MoveOn.org and their ilk and are dropping their policies because of it, I say "so what?" Although he is still chairman of the board, he retired as CEO in 2000, removing himself from day-to-day control of the company. While I strongly disagree with Lewis and his political bedfellows, I am not going to boycott a business out-of-hand just because of a corporate officer's private political donations. If it were the company itself making donations to MoveOn.org and the like, then I'd sure as hell drop them like a hot potato, because they would be making partisan political donations on my dime, but Lewis (as a private individual) is free to spend his own money however he wishes, just so long as he follows the law.

Obviously you don't what Swift-Boating is.

Swift-Boating is simply the dissemination of critical information that the Mainstream Media declines to report. Swift-Boating is not lying.

What CBS News did with the so-called TANG Memos was a clear act of fraud and NOT an instance of Swift-Boating. The Leftist claim that Swift-Boating is lying is a flat out lie. But then expecting anyone on the Left to tell the truth is like expecting the Sun to shine at night.

When, O Catiline Democrats, do you mean to cease abusing our patience? How long is that madness of yours still to mock us? When is there to be an end of that unbridled audacity of yours, swaggering about as it does now?

"The desire of the Left to do violence against good and decent people in their lust for power is not a new thing. It is a very old story indeed."
I'd hate for anyone to overlook your insight, Les. Chilling, appalling, true.

It's already been pointed out that the metadata on their page, which mentions "electing Democrats," is hardly nonpartisan. I haven't heard anyone mention (but it's hardly surprising) that the source code of that page is largely copypasted from [Link: www.dlcc.org...]

The bottom line:

Mr. Matzzie’s group was likely to have the opposite effect on potential donors, firing them up instead of discouraging them.

“They’re not going to be intimidated by some pipsqueak on the kooky left,” Mr. LaCivita said.

re: #51 Captain Jack

Projection, that's the reason.

do y'all like watching Texas Hold'Em on the various sports channels? Seems like an empty bluff to me..."stabbing at the pot" I think is the term. "posturing" or "empty threats" might work as well. Up the ante, I would say, if you happened to get such a letter. Threatening retribution, if you engage in the political process? How bout, if you happen to get such a letter, and you happen to live in a heavy GOP region, that happens to have a GOP nominated district judge and ESPECIALLY if you have a GOP dominated court of appeals, IMMEDIATELY file a CIVIL RIGHTS complaint against that group, ask for all financial disclosure during discovery, and SUE for EVERY penny in George Soros bank accounts, and then see how long this tactic lasts. They would shut up, IN A HURRY

I'll be filing a complaint with the FEC if I ever get one. What a bunch of clowns, assclowns. OBAMA SUCKS.

I posted on thier website, calling them out on their "non-partisan" line. Somehow, I'm thinking my post will never see the light of day.

re: #151 Beller0ph1

An old friend of mine is fond of saying, "if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck."

If it looks like blackmail, sounds like blackmail, and smells like blackmail, well guess what, it's blackmail.

The receipients of these letters need to go to McCain and let him know what is going on. Then he needs to confront Obama about this face to face on national television. Better yet, put it on pay-per-view at $49.95 a pop.
